The Governors Awards is the event where AMPAS hands out its honorary Oscars — this year, to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, and editor Carole Littleton (you know a lot of her work, including a little indie picture called E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial). And, in a dagger to the sleep cycle of all stylists, they decided to jam it in between the Golden Globes and the coming one-two weekend punch of the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Emmy Awards. Coverage of this one is spilling into two posts, with the first one here focusing on the folks who arrived in color, which I am specifically defining as “not black or white” — among them Emma Stone, who deviated from her Louis Vuitton ambassadorship to wear an off-the-runway Fendi. My uninformed theory here is that they didn’t have time to have LV make Emma a second outfit, and that Emma knows better than to default to anything Louis Vuitton has sent down a catwalk. She is CORRECT. But was this an improvement?
