It would be more accurate to say that I forgot Hollywood is still making Smurfs movies, although I gather this is a reboot — the IP changed hands from Sony to Paramount and Nickelodeon, and their first move was signing Rihanna to write original songs for it. There’s been so much attention paid to that angle — it’s a horse race to see which appears first, her next full album or George RR Martin’s next Game of Thrones book — that I never really processed that she’s also starring in the film. And she brought her two dudes to the premiere, and they are the cutest tiny people imaginable.
RiRi’s Saint Laurent is more or less runway-accurate — it was a black ribbon there rather than an olive one, which is an interesting change, although the basic style does nothing for me. But really, how often am I ever that enamored of what she puts on? Probably 90 percent of my writing on this topic is some variation of, “Her FACE is SPECTACULAR, but…” And this is no exception. But hey, she dresses boldly, and she embraces and cherishes her shape in all its phases. So yay, celebrate this stage in whatever you want, even if it’s giving Rebel Disney Princess. And maybe make that movie next.
