‘Tis the season for folks to be packing their bags and heading off on vacations — be that multiple weeks in Europe (lucky you!) or just a weekend away (also lucky you). I got home from two nights in Laguna just this week and got to thinking about how everyone’s got that one item of clothing they always pack because it works in so many instances. This occured primarily because I had done the worst packing job of my life; the weather app (and my general life experience) made me think it was going to be much colder by the beach than it actually was. This was thrilling because the weather was great, but I thanked the packing gods that I randomly threw in a pair of shorts “just in case,” because I wore them basically the entire time. They were these shorts, which I really like. They’re long enough to look “nice” if you need them to.

The other two things I always pack are, yes, the Ruti pants — which I did wear and immediately got tacos on — and a very large, cheap scarf that I bought a million years ago that rolls up very small and livens everything up. (It lives in my purse because I am always scared of being cold.) That particular scarf isn’t being made anymore, but it’s 50 inches square and you can find vintage or resale ones that size or slightly smaller all over the place. (Just searching “large silk scarf” on Etsy is a trove. I love this one with the airplane on it that was a British Airways souvenir! But basically any vintage clothing shop anywhere will have a ton.) What’s the one thing you always pack?
