Time has no meaning, so of course this feels like it was eleventy billion eternities ago. But no: Orange Is The New Black bowed out a year ago, and some of the cast members popped by the Empire State Building to light it up in honor of their work. And Laverne did not blow this off. She lit it up in her own way, in this fabulous red-lined cape and great fitted dress (with mesh gloves that I swear must be the ones she also put on for the Emmy announcement yesterday). I love that cape. I love that she cared enough to wear that cape. And I miss her on the red carpet, even when she’s putting on stuff that guarantees her a deep Fug Madness run.

She was pregnant – she had her baby in November, pre-Covid, yay — and she was radiant in these gorgeous bright colors. In this photo, she is happier times. She is optimism. She is the good cheer we could all use. Someday I hope to bust back out into the world in a hot pink caftan and glow half this much.
