The new head designer at Chanel did not fully abandon tweed — how could he, really — but I think it’s quite telling that so few of his celebrity guests wore it. To me, this collection feels more contemporary and less hamstrung by history; he seems far less encumbered by Lagerfeld’s legacy, and it was long past time. Whether you respond to it or not, I do think blown away the stale air of prior seasons.
