I don’t know if this has ever happened to me, but I like this cover better now that I’ve read the accompanying interview.  She looks very unapologetic; I originally interpreted her expression as sadness, but I think it’s more just straight-forwardness, and as such, I like it. (Although I’m not sure if it’s great business sense to have to read the inside to appreciate the outside.)  I do appreciate her vast array of accessories; I’m perhaps neutral on her bangs.

But the cover story is great. Some of that is because Miley herself is (and always has been) chatty as hell and never really seems to worry about saying something people won’t like. (And sometimes she does! But it makes her an interesting read.) She’s got a lot of opinions and she does not hold back around journalists, and thank god for that. This is a pretty wide-ranging interview — she talks about marriage, and her parents, and climate change, and her sexuality and Joan Jett. And karma. This bit is specifically tied to Trump:

ELLE: Right—it’s confusing when bad people succeed.

MILEY: It’s just cause and effect. If you have a lot of money and you did a lot of shady shit, you’re going to win. That doesn’t mean that at some point someone’s not going to take you down. But I just don’t believe that everyone gets what they deserve. I know a lot of amazing people through Happy Hippie [Cyrus’s foundation that focuses on youth homelessness, the LGBTQ community, and other vulnerable populations] who live on the street—artists who are super-talented who’ve never gotten a break. I fucking know that karma isn’t real.”

It’s just really interesting:

I tried to go to therapy a few times. And they treated me like I was everyone else who sits on the couch. They’d be like, “Well, you probably feel paranoid because you’re smoking weed.” And it’s like, “No, I feel paranoid because people are putting little drones in my backyard.” One time I was naked on top of a fake horse when a drone showed up. And I’m like, Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better time. At least I wasn’t sitting there drinking coffee, being boring. But now I think it’s kind of uninteresting for people to see me rebel.

If you have a few minutes to kill, I’d definitely go read the whole thing.
