First off: Robin Givhan wrote a great piece about Marc Jacobs and American fashion this week, which I totally recommend.

Second: I actually think this is one of Marc’s more wearable collections — I don’t mean that as an insult, I think “wearable” is ultimately a positive move for a business meant to sell clothing.  It’s always been interesting to me that Marc Jacobs is basically THE major American designer who means anything on a purely artistic level (Givhan talks about this in a much more thoughtful way than I can), but celebrities rarely wear him. That is, of course, not the only rubric for success, and nor should it be, but it is the one I am most able to speak to, and celebs bring a spotlight to a designer which ultimately helps them sell the rest of bags and shoes and perfume —  the items that really bring in the cash to keep the business running. Marc Jacobs might not NEED celebrities anymore — most people already know his handbags are good — but it was always interesting to me from a red carpet perspective. All of that being said: This feels like the most celeb-friendly collection he’s shown in a long time.  I actually think we’re going to see a lot of this one.
