Amusingly, Chanel’s giant empty birdcage set echoes the fact that the top job itself remains unoccupied, after Virginie Viard finally got ousted. It was designed as a nod to a 1991 ad starring Vanessa Paradis; to this end, they had Riley Keough come out for the finale walk and sit on the perch — you can faintly see her there — and sing what was, from the clips I saw on Instagram, a lifeless and strained rendition of “When The Doves Cry.” At least that ended up being apt, as the collection itself seems… well, stagnant, like they maybe should’ve just paused and churned out more shoes and purses until they could hire another top dog.
