well-played

These might be two of my favorite looks from her, ever. What topless photo kerfuffle?

Even better, the floral dress was a gift from their hosts. Apparently she had a dress already planned for the evening that she brought from London, but saw the gift and decide to wear that instead!

    Love her? Love her.

Hate tan lines and French paps? Hate tan lines and French paps.

    1. The pillbox hat reminds me of the Mennonites that live around here. I’m certain that wasn’t the look she was going for.
    2. If your tabloid fodder (which, let’s get real, anyone with a shred of fame is), maybe being topless isn’t such a good idea. It’s obvious they go to any length to get their pics, and they are just looking for THOSE shots, so keep your bits covered and there’s no issue.
    3. The second dress is cute.

She’s not the one in the wrong here. It’s a gross invasion of privacy as she has the right to wear (or not wear) whatever she wants in the privacy of her own back yard. She shouldn’t have to worry about someone sneaking photos of her in their private moments any more than us regular people.

She’s not in the wrong, but it was a pretty silly thing to do. I mean, everyone has a right to feel safe in their own home, doesn’t mean you don’t lock your doors. No matter how illegal it is, people are still going to try to take photos of Kate no matter where she is so she really should be more careful. Just a sad fact of life for her now.

Back to the dresses, that first blue dress is hideous,as is the hat and shoes. I usually like what she wears, but I think that must be one of the worst things she’s worn. Love the second dress though!

My understanding is that they were vacationing at a chateau that sits on hundreds of acres of private land. I’d imagine I’d be safe from the paps in those circumstances, too; apparently there is nowhere safe now. Next thing, the poor girl will have to stop showering unclothed.

Not crazy about the hat, but otherwise she looks great. How she manages to look so fresh in the heat and humidity is beyond me.

Kellilee–yes, the hat reminded me of a prayer cap, too! Probably not the look she was going for, unless she was doing an homage to Breaking Amish.

I think the strapless dress is a direct hit against the paps – Yeah, I’ve got no tan lines, so eat that you scuzzballs!

The Duchess looks radiant, and William handsome.

The magazine nudies look like they had been taken by satellite cameras.

I was talking with my husband about this exact thing. (He’s totally up on the royal family because of me.) He said it reminded him of the Google Earth shots where you zoom and zoom and zoom to finally see something grainy that resembles your car in front of your house.

      • Libby

Yeah, current speculation is that the pics were taking from around 1km away. If the nearest road is 1km away, I think you have a reasonable expectation of privacy, for pity’s sake!

I love both dresses. She looks so good in the casual pink one (nice job on the gifting!) and the green one is fantastic with that great hat. Doesnt the boat vehicle picture remind you of those pictures you take when you stand in front of a green screen and they insert a background? Yeah it does me.

The way she’s handling this “scandal” only makes me love her and Wills more. And the fact that in the privacy of her own back yard takes her top off (for Wills or not, but you know it was a little bit for him. They like each other! They really like each other!) only makes me like her even more. Princesses: They’re just like us.

that was absolutely my first thought when i heard about the topless photos! wow – they are a real couple who are in real love taking a real vacation.

both of these looks are adorable – and so wearable! i just love her. *le sigh*

Green screen! Thats what it is; I couldn’t figure out what was weird/awesome about the first photo. Now you’re in the rainforest! Now you’re in front of an erupting volcano!

Generally favorable, but I agree on the color of the hat/shoes with the green/blue dress. I get that she was trying to pick up on the white in there, and that she’s in a super-tropical place, but there just wasn’t enough of it, even if it is 80 degrees with 103% humidity where she is. Otherwise, two thumbs up.

Love all of the looks, except those white shoes…. no.

And they are both handling the “scandal” with grace. You really do think the french paps would know better…

It must be horrible to have to squelch every bit of spontaneity in your life because someone, somewhere will photograph you.

The last photos is sort of hilarious. Definitely taken by someone’s auntie who spent the entire night nagging everyone with her camera. I can’t figure out her hand on her chest in that one. Is she preventing a wardrobe malfunction or is she just trying to fill her quota of photos that include a shot of the ring?

She is 100% pregnant – check out all he hiding the tummy behind her hands and handbag and bows etc

Yeah, except in the aforementioned pap photos that are the subject of the lawsuit and are only 2 weeks old, there is definitely not a kid in there. At least not a fetus that is older than 4 days.

I understand, though not condone, the mindset of the editors: This will sell magazines. What I don’t understand is the appetite of the general public for these photos. So what that she’s famous? She’s still a human being, not an animal in a safari park. If she was topless in public, that would be news. This is just grubby profiteering. If people want to look at pictures of breasts they should look at the ones of the people who pose for those photographs willingly and knowingly. And seriously? 3.5 billion people on this planet have or will develop breasts. It’s not like it’s unusual or anything.

The clothes are awesome and not only is it very gracious of her to wear the dress she was given, I’m way impressed by the fact that it fits her. Whether through good fortune, inside information, or last minute alterations, a whole lot of somebodies did good.

I unabashedly love her and want every single one of the dresses featured in this post (even though the graphic print one would be truly terrible on my 5’2′ frame), but I have to clutch my pearls for a moment and bemoan the placement of that hat. How could an English girl who has now married into one of the greatest hat-wearing families alive today not know to put her hat properly on top of her head?

LOVE that pink strapless dress…I saw it on the news this morning and went crazy for it, and even cooler that it was a gift from the hosts. Love those wedges, too.

Just when I think I can’t love her more, something like this ‘scandal’ happens and she handles it with total grace and solidifies my love. She’s my age, but can I please be her when I grow up?

Let’s give a little love to William, too – he looks very dapper in his Island Casual shirt. I can’t imagine his father looking nearly that at ease; nice of them to pick the blue to bring out his eyes.

She looks glorious, as usual. My only nit to pick is that I’m getting REALLY tired of her wearing her hair pulled back on top, long all around (what my girls call half-up-half-down). Here, it’s in service to the hat, and once I saw the hat it was better, but she does it a LOT and it’s really a very young look. As in, elementary school. There are so many better things she could do with that hair than barette it back on each side….

    • Libby
      0

Edith, I love your nit, because some other commenters on here think that the half-up-half-down look is not youthful enough on her.

I don’t know what one is supposed to do with hair her length other than
      A) wear it in the pretty blow-out that has been her go-to look
      B) wear it half-up-half-down so there’s less in her face, but still pretty framing of the neck/jawline
      C) wear it in some sort of up-do.

Myself, I tend to default to updo, because I’m lazy, and I don’t have to think about it for the rest of the day. If I’m looking to impress/look nice, I usually do the half-up/half-down thing. Usually without a part and straight back into a single barrette. Or, if my hair is being particularly manageable, all down (but it’s curly, so it doesn’t look like hers).

I’m with you, Libby. I think my hair is fairly similar in texture and length to Kate’s (though, probably like 1/2 that luxurious thickness), and I don’t really understand the criticisms about how she wears her hair. How is she supposed to wear it? I would really, sincerely like to know because it would help me figure out what else I can do with my own hair, as I currently wear basically the same styles as Kate, minus those barrel curls that she adds.

All I can think is that maybe some folks would prefer her to stop with the curls all the time, which is maybe a fair complaint. I would be interested to see her rocking a looser, natural wave or just plain straight, but maybe that doesn’t feel “done” enough for her.

        • Edith
          0

I’m with you on a looser wave. She could also wear a ponytail, of which there are a LOT of variations, some dressier than others. She could wear a casual updo, something at the nape of her neck, instead of only doing an updo when she’s super-duper fancy. Hell, with some of the looks I saw on this tour – the most casual ones, like when she was going to the pig farm – a good french braid would work. I just feel like her take on this particular style is very little girl (though it does have a dowdiness to it, too. Much like mary janes).

That said. I covet her hair, and it really is a teensy nit; I <3 the Duchess Katherine.

        • pantsonfire
          0

Oh, well, I agree. I thought I had seen her wear her hair at her nape a few times and I thought I saw her rocking a ponytail a few times. Maybe not on this trip, though. So, I guess, basically, I thought of her repertoire as down with curls, ponytail, half up/half down with curls, and various low updos at the nape. So I guess I’m inclined to think that the problem isn’t the hair style per se, but the beauty pageantness take on each style, and mainly here I’m talking about those curls she’s adding and, I’m guessing, some serious hairspray. The more I think about it, the more I’d love to just see her with an ordinary blow out.

P.S. She might look good with a bun that sits higher on her head, also, and maybe a braid, but a modern take on braid, though that might be too edgy for a duchess. And…I’m done thinking about Kate Cambridge’s hair. Maybe forever.

So awesome – that pink dress is by TAVs – a Cook Islands clothing company. We’re a tiny country so everyone is super excited she chose to wear this – its front page news!

This isn’t to do with the two at hand, but on the paparazzi subject, I thought this response by Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield was made of awesome http://www.themarysue.com/andrew-garfield-emma-stone-paparazzi-charity/

You know, I never cared much one way or the other about the royal family. I admired Diana and vividly remember where I was and the horror I felt when I found out that she’d passed away, but other than that, I never really felt anything, good or bad, toward the royal family. However, since the dawn of Wills and Kate, I find myself obsessing over them, reading every story I can about them and generally wishing that, if I can’t actually BE Kate, that I could be friends with her (and her husband, of course).
This whole topless “scandal” and their grace toward the whole thing just cements everything I think about her and William, which then extends to the entire family. They are just THAT classy. I wish she could teach a class.
Re: the clothes: she looks fantastic, as always.

  22. Andrea

For the most part, her looks on this whole tour have been fantastic. Stylish, elegant, and tasteful. A few looks I haven’t cared for, but that was just not liking the color of the dress or the styling. Minor stuff. Part of me wishes she’d have done a few more things with her hair like a french braid or a chignon. I’d have even liked a fancy pony tail. She brought a hairdresser with her, so either time was really tight between engagements and they weren’t able to do more or the extreme humidity prevented anything too fancy.

As for the photo business, I hope the sad rag gets sued back to the stone age. I understand that William and Catherine are public figures and people are going to want pictures, but for the love of all that’s holy, they were on a private estate with no one else in attendance. If you have to use a major lens from a half mile away to get a picture, YOU’RE INVADING THEIR PRIVACY, JACKHOLE. And to the clueless editor, I don’t care how “tasteful” said pictures may be and how “in love” they are. They were on vacation and alone. The only person that needs to be seeing her bare breasts is William, not the global population.

Can’t stand this freeloading couple who think they can dictate to the media. The royal family represent all that is wrong about the UK: unearned privilege, the class system and sycophancy.

I love that blue strapless dress on her and I love that Wills looks like the typical sunburned Anglo in the background. He looks kind of wiped out and a bit too red. Man needs water.

Someone needs to start a tumblr of all the photos of Kate in the foreground looking fabulous and Wills in the background looking shadowy and conniving. There’s a good one in this batch, and I know I’ve seen many others.
