Well Played, Wills and Kate: Far East Tour, Day Eight

well-played

This is so easily my favorite of all their trips, including that time they drove right past my house and I didn’t see it because I was in the back bedroom trying on shoes.

I am Team That Yellow Dress! I was thinking while looking at the grass skirt pictures that if that were me, I’d feel so foolish, but she just looks like, “Yes, this is the grass skirt they’ve just tied around me, and yes I am going to dance in it. OK?” I would look like a dork, she looks like this sort of thing happens every day.

That dress is gorgeous. Even my husband, who has never before commented on a random woman’s outfit, brought up Kate’s yellow dress and said how great she looked.

I am not sure any internet video, including ones with kittens or baby pandas, has ever made me so happy as the one with Wills dancing.

I am ready for my Far East tour & people carrying me about now!

He just looks like he’s trying so hard, and it is the cutest. They are honestly my favorite celebrity couple ever. They make being charming (which, essentially, is their main job) look so easy.

I love both her dresses…I LOVE the caftan! How can she make a caftan look so good! And i know she’s in heels, but i love how tall she is–they match each other so well.

Amy and mshesterp – My thoughts exactly. Couldn’t agree with you both more. That video delighted me beyond measure. And the caftan! I have never liked maxidresses (except when I was 7) and I WANT that dress. No, I want to look as effortlessly charming in that dress as she does.

I need a gif of the dancing Royals. That’s just too awesome. And I love Kate’s hair in the yellow dress (and down, too, off course), and the fantastically chic caftan. Diana once said that the job of being the Princess of Wales was “like going to a wedding every day – and you’re always the bride. Everyone is so happy to see you, and they expect you to be so happy and so beautiful.” (That’s from distant memory, but it’s the gist of what she said.) I imagine it’s exactly that for Kate, too, only she seems to be able to recognize what’s really awesome and fun about the job, too. It no doubt helps that she and Will are clearly very very happy together, too. Can’t imagine going through all this with someone who doesn’t love you….

That’s an awesome quote. I can imagine that it became a burden and chore over time to have that be your day-to-day life, but it’s certainly true. And I guess if you look at how much joy you bring people, just by showing up, it might make it a little easier to bear (which seems to me like how Kate is handling it). I mean, if everyone was clamoring to see me every day when I got in the office, and was overjoyed when I shook their hand or recognized them, I’m sure it would get old, but it would be sort of nice at the same time. Actually, it would be sort of weird because my coworkers see me every day, and if they went into raptures every morning when I arrived, after awhile I guess I’d wonder if they weren’t a little whack. But whatever.

Buzzfeed has a whole collection of gifs of them dancing! It is perfectly amazing.

But they should’ve let him take his jacket off first! Then I think he would’ve broken it down hardcore. Street-style.

…I just snorted at the image in my head of Wills being “street.”

Kate’s hair is too too fabulous!! How does she do it? An hour in that tropical climate and my hair would look like I combed it with a caramel apple.

So cute, thanks for posting all of these, because I wouldn’t have seen them otherwise (all of my other internet browsing time is completely filled up with obsessively reading about the presidential campaign ). Plus, she really doesn’t seem pregnant at all.

I love both the eyelet and the caftan looks, and that grass skirt is KILLER. I want one! I have to say, though, I think Wills’ dancing is better than Kate’s. Girlfriend is so clearly not comfortable dancing, and he totally OWNS that dorkiness. But in both cases, it just makes them even cuter. It’s a testament to their charisma that they make what could be a really uncomfortably colonial moment look like good fun all around.

    • Heta

I’m not sure that Kate is uncomfortable dancing; I think it is more likely that she is concerned that she might insult the culture, and is dancing the thin line between appropriate and goofy. Whereas, Will just goes full out goofy, and does so without self-consciousness (or other-consciousness) and is therefore totally lovable; I don’t get any sense that he might be inadvertently mocking the culture. Kate actually has some nice moves; she’s just too aware of her environment here.

      • Fiona

Agreed. I got the definite sense that Kate was concentrating on doing it “right.”

This has been such a wonderful tour, they must go on another one soon.

Kate looks fabulous in a grass skirt, again I damn her. Yellow dress? Damn again. Gorgeous hair in the heat & humidity…. damn. I want to weep with envy, I think I’ll go have a coconut drink to soothe myself.

I LOVE the video of them dancing – especially when it shows Wills! He is hilariously awkward!

I also love how in slide 6 they’re sitting on two big heart platforms. Do you think that’s standard celebratory platform style, or do you think it’s because everyone loves how in luuuuurve they are? :)

I was REALLY uncomfortable with the pictures of them being carried in like that, but I’m assuming it was a customary island greeting and not something they could turn down without offending someone.

Besides they both look so dorky/adorable dancing that I just want to squee.

    • Jessica
      0

I am SURE it is the traditional/customary way to greet all dignitaries because otherwise I can’t imagine Wills would give that one the thumbs up, because yes.

      • Elaine
        0

He handled it well too… apparently he told them that “your wonderful welcome has to be the most original and, quite literally, uplifting, ever.”

I appreciate a) genuine appreciation for people’s efforts and b) royal puns.

    I. Just. LOVE them.

The two of them are a frickin’ all-singing, all-dancing nonstop ad for how awesome the monarchy can be. Not just dancing adorably, not just wearing native headdresses, not just gazing into each other’s eyes as they share yet another sweet inside joke, but also kicking ass and taking names when French paps come at them. More approachable and yet more hardcore about privacy when it really counts than their parents’ or grandparents’ generations. They’re amazing.

  14. Drie

I adore them. The video made me fall even more in love with those two! Anyone else get a flash of Hugh Grant dancing in “Love Actually” when we watched Wills trying to dance? :) ADORKABLE!!

It is all so imperialistic and colonialistic and kind of disgusting, but, yes, the video of them dancing is hilarious.

    • Mary

These people seem proud to welcome Kate and William with time-honored customs and traditions. I don’t think it’s disgusting at all.

    • Jacq
      0

It’s also pretty patronising and imperialist to deny people the right to celebrate important visitors in whatever way they choose.

      • Jessica
        0

Let’s all calm down about this. I think Wills quote — above — makes it pretty clear that this was not a Royal Imperative and instead was a traditional greeting.

          like “wiki wiki”?

They can do no wrong.. but I bet they will be glad to get home so Wills can lambast somebody about the royal kerfuffle. And please, ya’ll have a baby soon….

  16. Wendy

I have always loved these two, but the hula dancing just solidified my opinion that Kate is someone I’d love to go have a drink and/or be stuck in an elevator with. She just seems so good-natured and game for anything her life throws at her, which I totally respect because I could see myself getting cranky if I had to be on display like that all the time.

Also, I might be willing to trade my firstborn for Those Wedges.

  17. Lori
    0

They always seem to be having a good time, genuinely. Except for that day or two when Kate’s boobs were the talk of the town. The only thing this trip is missing is Harry in native (shirtless) costume.

I know they dated for a million years, but this is a pretty dramatic life change for Kate, and she’s taken to it very well. Her smile seems real and she seems to be enjoying it for the most part.

  18. TonyG

I like Wills and Kate, and I know it’s probably custom, but I just hate the image of British Royalty being carried around by natives walking under them. That is a miss in my book, but I know they likely had no control over that. I suspect it’s considered impolite to refuse the ride. I just had to say that because it’s something so obvious, kind of like the proverbial pink elephant in the room.

I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this but apparently there is a group of people in the Solomon Islands (I think? Somewhere in a formerly British South Pacific island group) who worship Prince Phillip as a god. There are pictures of him all over the place. I read about it in a Paul Theroux book, The Happy Isles of Oceania. I really wish Wills and Kate had visited them, because it would have BLOWN THEIR MINDS. And then maybe they’d start worshipping Wills.

  20. pantsonfire

Say, this gal has good taste in dresses. The yellowish one is nice, but of these two, I prefer the white one with red detailing (which doesn’t really look like a caftan to me). Huzzah for sandal wedges! Down with close-toed shoes whilst on tropical tour!

  21. glomer
    0

Now, I like Kate and Wills aplenty, but these images are deeply disturbing. Color them sepia and they could have been lifted straight out of the 19th century. Decolonization is a thing, you know?

    • LG
      0

Eh. If they welcome every visiting dignitary, who am I to kick up a fuss just because these particular dignitaries happen to be more melanin-deficient? Do we kick a longstanding tradition to the curb just because it’s been used to prop up colonialism, even though that wasn’t its original purpose? I vote no.

    • jaygee

Unless you’re from Tuvalu, then you really don’t know what these customs signify for a Tuvaluan. Don’t assume everyone views their world through the narrative of Western history, ie sometimes a litter is just a litter.

    • Sobaika Mirza
      0

Yeah, the imagery is very problematic, but I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt and am almost positive this was the islanders’ preferred and customary way of greeting dignitaries.

      • Jacq
        0

Of course it would have been. What would the alternative theory be – that the royals/their representatives insisted on being carried in that way?

  22. deee

Wills’ dancing made my day. And Funafuti, Tuvalu looks like the kitschiest place ever. But it can be kitschy – it’s the real thing!

I think the processional was actually a nice gesture of respect. It’s our problem if a tradition in their culture gives us the heebie jeebies. I got little goosebumps hearing them sing “God Save The Queen” and I’m not even British.

I think Prince William should do a dance with EVERY APPEARANCE. Remember when this happened?! http://www.royalblog.ca/2011/12/prince-william-busts-a-move-at-homeless-shelter.html

    Case closed.

I had coconut ice cream last night, does that count as being in on the celebration? Because if it doesn’t, I’ll go have a Piña Colada right now! Anyway, loved the dresses & the shoes & the dancing… SO CUTE!

Honestly, the world would be a better place if our leaders were expected to dance with the common folk where ever they went. Imagine what that would do for the electoral process in this country, if every stump speech were accompanied by dancing with the audience. Line dancing in Dubuque! Slam dancing in Seattle! Shaking your Moneymaker in Miami!

It is amazing how game these two are for all of it. Flower hat? Shell necklaces? We’re going to get there HOW, exactly? SURE I’ll wear a grass skirt! <3

Ok, I have never been giddy-ly on the royal’s bandwagon. But seriously, this slideshow has made my day (and I got some pretty great news today). This slideshow, with it’s link to that sweet-baby-Jesus video of Wills & Kate dancing, is officially my favorite slideshow in the history of this website, and I’ve been reading this site for more than six years, I think.

They look great– freaking loved the dancing! Kate looks great in the yellow dress, the chic caftan and the grass skirt! Were we all so lucky. It looks like they’re having an awesome. The “Go Team Kate” picture is one of my faves.

I can imagine by this point they want nothing more than to go hide at Anglesey for weeks on end, but I adore how open and into it they seem to be when all the travel and constantly-on-show stuff must be exhausting.

I want to know her secret to staying so crisp looking at all times. She she never sit down? Or lean? Or pull up her dress to go to the bathroom? I’m much too practical. :^). They’re adorkable, both of them. And they’re doing a fine royal PR job on this trip. All those people will have such stories about them! They got to see her when she’s young and gorgeous and only in the second year of marriage. I imagine some people have such memories of Queen Elizabeth when she did her world tour as a young woman. Yeah, they’re just celebrities (although he does have a proper job as a pilot and a job that has some risk to it), but in my opinion the best kind–they’re gracious. open, good natured and ready to please and BE pleased. Has she EVER worn sunglasses?

AND all of this during a very embarrassing moment in her life. I think it takes some spine to show up to work and put on a nice dress and smile like you mean it. And you know, dance like a dork.

  36. Rina

You people are INSANE. I cannot believe the amount of admiration and love and respect you have for two unaccomplished, over-privileged millionaires who you would be expected to bow or curtsy to simply because of the fact that a couple of centuries ago, some old Caucasian guy decided he didn’t want to work a day in his life and crowned himself King.

It is unbelievable to me that a woman who consistently dresses like a 47 year old, snooty Myer perfume counter saleswoman is on your best dressed list again and again when she is not bold, adventurous or even flattering in her clothing choices and style.
And what the hell is with all the talk on how hard her life must be? Grinning into a camera and pressing the flesh is not the same as scrubbing toilets in hospitals.

I’m out and btw, your racist Jennifer Lopez ‘Hola, lovers’ posts aren’t funny.

    • Beth

OK, so the joy of the internet is that if you don’t like a site…you don’t have to visit it. Not everyone has the same sense of humor and I think the site is fairly equal opportunity in its humor.

Since when does style always have to be adventurous? Most of us can’t and don’t want to look like Lady Gaga on a regular basis. Kate does her job well, she’s a representative of her country and I’m guessing does quite a bit for tourism along with the humanitarian work they both do.

Do they have a lot of advantages? Absolutely. But most of us also don’t have to deal with someone basically stalking us and selling the the pictures on the internet for millions of dollars either. There are always tradeoffs.

Who knows, maybe the Queen will have her, Wills, and Harry scrub toilets when they get home for embarrassing the family?

      • Megan
        0

I doubt Kate will see any kind of “punishment” from QEII! William is her favorite grandson, and by all accounts she really likes Kate. I just get this feeling that when the news broke of Kate’s topless pictures, the Queen was like “Uh oh – topless? Not good. Wait, she’s clearly just with William and not some random dude? WHEW!”

        • Libby

That video just made my week. Seriously.

And I love the fifth photo in the slideshow, where they’re looking at each other with the flower wreaths on their heads, and it looks like they are both thinking, “yep, we have flower wreaths on our heads. This is pretty hilarious.”
