Well Played, Sandra Oh

well-played

Well, if nothing else, this is a great improvement over what she wore to the Independent Spirit Awards:

But I legitimately also dig it — the snakes are cool; subtle, but still kind of vaguely threatening in a way that I find interesting (just the way I like my men). In fact, I feel like I might want some wallpaper in that pattern, although I am aware that it might be weird to have snakes on your walls. I can’t imagine, however, that you’re all that surprised that I’m weird by this point. How do y’all like it?

As you say, vaguely threatening. I like my snakes behind glass, thank you very much, so it’s another “NO” to “OH”.

I have to agree that this is a BIG improvement over her outfit at the Spirit Awards. It’s very interesting, the pattern. I’m not sure how I feel about the black “ribbons” (I couldn’t think of a better word, but you know what I mean) at the top.

    LOVE it. Want it.

Hmm, looks kind of like a possibly interesting/pretty (not quite ugly/pretty, a la Tyra) dress was attacked by a electrical tape-wielding bandit. Maybe the bandit hates snakes? Maybe it was Indy, then? THAT would be interesting.

I actually do really like it!

I think I’m going with Love It. Not sure about the wallpaper idea though. It would be cool but what room would that work for? Guest bathroom maybe? I’d need to have a guest bathroom first!

    Agreed, Daner! Love and Want!

It makes me go “eww no” out loud. It does nothing for her, it’s just…there. If “it’s kind of weird looking” is the most a dress has going for it, generally you should go back to the drawing board.

I’m into it, but then I’m kind of a weirdo, so….

I like it on her, but I would never wear it myself.

MUCH better than the blue/bra strap mess! Why do I have the feeling though, that under that pretty, floaty dress lurks black tights and clunky black shoes? :/

AWESOME! I love it! The cut and colour are super flattering, and the snake pattern gives it enough quirky edge to push it from nice up to fantastic. Also, our reptilian friends are misunderstood and beautiful creatures. Give them some slack, I’d put them on my dress anyday! (At least the printed ones)

That swoop of black ribbon over her hip is one too many swoops. Without it, the other two would look fine, and it would be kind of a pretty gown, snakes and all.

Ooo look, an animal that is NOT a swan. I like it a lot.

Oo, love it! I like how the black is off-kilter and giving her an arty fashion line drawn shape. (like this: http://media.wwd.com/images/processed/Glossies/Scoop/2008/10/48-drawing-the-line/portrait/00-main/drawing-the-line4.jpg)

I didn’t even notice the snakes at first, but it’s all the better for having them. Snakes > flower prints, any day.

Really love it, snakes and all.
That’s how to use ribbon to make a dress pop without looking like you just glue-gunned it on because you had it lying around.

She looks quite statuesque, if that statue was found in the pit Indiana Jones was trapped in with Marion while looking for the Ark of the Covenant.

I really like it. I normally don’t go for this non-color as it were, but the black contrast trim and the pattern make it work. It is different and flattering. WIN!

The shape and fit are nice, but the overall color is dull, and I hate the obvious “aren’t I cool and edgy to have M-F SNAKES on my dress?” is annoying (much like Oh herself). I still think she’s wearing opaque black tights and clunky ugly shoes under it, though.

  31. Kim

Meh. Its too big in the boobs. I would like it more if its was just a black pattern and NOT snakes. The snakes makes it a no.

What’s with women and snakes (and I am female.) I had a snake ring in college because I was trying to be cool and tough. It was tacky then and its tacky now.

I love this on Sandra and I loved it on Emily when she wore it, but you guys slammed her :( http://gofugyourself.com/academy_of_country_music_awards_emily_west-04-2009

It’s a very cool, very interesting dress and both ladies rocked it.

  33. Barbara

Never seen her looking so great. LOVE the dress. She’s not a traditionally beautiful woman, but she’s what the French call jolie-laide, or pretty-ugly, and it’s a compliment. Much more interesting than being pretty. She rocks!!

So the Sorting Hat put her in Slytherin?

I absolutely love it, and am reminded that snakes are symbolic of beauty, like Cleopatra. OK, maybe except for that one asp….

Not loving the snakes, but this dress is really FAB on Sandra. And yes, @psyche, this is how to do the “random” winding trim properly.

SOOOOOOOO much better than the blue thing.

  38. Fuh Ugh

Girlfriend rocked it. And funny that it looks great on her, because she’s Sandra Oh and all, but Emily West truly did look stupid in the same dress.

  39. Liz

Any dress that draws your attention to the beauty of the wearer first is a good dress in my books.

  40. Lina

Love her to pieces. Hate peach with a passion, except in rare cases where the wearer usually has a vastly different skin tone, allowing the peach to act as a color. Here, however, it’s effectively “nude” for SO, so I’m cringey. BUT! I love these dragons beyond description. And I dig the cut, dig the styling, dig that she is clearly wearing it instead of being worn…and she looks genuinely 100% great. Let’s call it a win!

  41. Maria

Love!! I didn’t notice the snake pattern at first, so though I do not like snakes, I still LOVE the cut and the style.

It’s a great style on her and she looks terrific in it – AND she looks like she knows it. Well played indeed! (If I could look that great in something I would never, ever take it off, ever, not even to bathe …)

the dress is okay, but I think her makeup is great.

  45. Allie

Love it!! Her hair and makeup are fantastic with the flowy-ness of the dress, and the color surprisingly DOESN’T wash her out. I think the black definitely helps in that aspect. I also rather dig the snakes. Much better than what she wore to the Independent Spirit Awards. Two enthusiastic thumbs up! Fine holiday fun!

My initial reaction was “Oh, she looks nice!” , then I spotted a snake which immediately called to mind the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag on a sepia background, which led me to picturing it on the Statue of Liberty…so it’s basically dead to me now.

  47. witjunkie

It seems like half the fabric of the Emily West dress, and the color works for Sandra. Looks good on her.

  48. Chasmosaur
    0

    @ezra:

When Emily West wore this, those ribbons look like they were about to pop, and it accentuated the fact that she is not teeny-tiny with a flat belly.

On Sandra Oh, this dress flows over her teeny-tiny figure.

If Emily West had gone up a size, it might have worked on her. Then again, it might not. Some dresses aren’t meant for some people.

  49. Chasmosaur
    0

Oh – not saying every woman has to have a teeny-tiny figure, or that Emily West doesn’t have a great figure. They’re both really pretty women.

Sandra Oh has the teeny-tiny figure. Emily West has a highly enviable yet definitively curvier figure. They both require different dressing tactics.

That’s so funny — I totally forgot that Heather wrote about this. Just goes to show you, dresses are very different on different people (and she may have hated this on Sandra Oh, too — we don’t run our stuff past each other, so don’t take my commentary as meaning that she’s reversed her original opinion).

  54. Lola

It’s a bit too long and i can see her needing to hitch it up when she walks to not end up taking a header. … And, to me, it also looks like she brought 2 spare bicycle innertubes along- for the ride home?. Otherwise it’s a huge improvement.

I like this one!!! Amazingly. Usually, she shows up to these things looking like an unmade bed. As you say, this is a big improvement. It looks nice on her figure and the color compliments same. She looked in a mirror before she left the house!! Good job.

Does anyone know who the designer of this dress is? I love it so much and would gladly wear a cocktail version of it.
