Well Played Kate Middleton, and a Royal Maternity Wear Retrospective

Let’s take a look at Kate’s final official SOLO* public appearance as a pregnant lady before she retreats to Kensington Palace and the comfort of her sweats until the baby comes, then amuse ourselves by revisiting all of her maternity fashions. In pregnancy as in non-pregnancy, girlfriend loves a coatdress.

*Sorry, I thought it was her last one, period, earlier.

I actually saw her when she was wearing outfit number 18. The road was blocked off outside Kings Cross station as there was a car waiting for them and they just rushed out, into the car and off they went. At the time I thought it was pretty rude of them not to smile and wave as there was a crowd gathered around but when I found out that that was when she was suffering from the worst of the morning sickness I felt rather bad!

  2. Kate

    She’s just great.

  3.  Carolina Girl

Now I know what is meant by a glowing pregnant woman. Maybe it’s good makeup, but she is radiant.

  4. Annie E

That peach one is a little short (not like, obscene, but surprisingly short for Kate) which makes me think… I am TOTALLY going to wear short skirts if I am ever pregnant.

    • Franziska

I recently saw some pictures of my mum when she was pregnant with me in 1969 and she wore a mini dress in every one of them. Almost more minuscule than mini! She looked fabulous! Go for it!

      • Guerra

I wanted to as in normal life I wear pretty short skirts but in pregnancy my legs swelled so bad I just couldn’t do it! Even though it was the hight of summer. I thought my legs looked hideous! Lol

        • LB

Me too. I was thinking how lucky she was that she didn’t puff up. I had legs like tree trunks and could only wear a couple of pairs of shoes. Fat feet are not nice. Or pretty.

  5. Peggy

What an elegant young woman, the Windsors are lucky to have her (as is Wills, of course). Particularly love the peach dress, it makes her glow more than she already does. Okay, maybe I hate it for just that reason ;-)

  6. malefanofGFY

Can we all just agree that Kate’s pantyhosed legs look A-MA-ZING!!! Yes, I’m a leg man, and yes I love hosiery on women… and thanks to Kate I’m now seeing it more & more on women of all ages, and it’s not only elegant, it’s so damn SEXY! Just a word to all you ladies, buy the GOOD stuff (ie. made in Europe), you’ll notice the difference in quality, feel and fit.

    • priya

      “quality,feel and ?fit” – are u sure u r not gay????
(not that that is a bad thing)

    • Mary Urech Stallings

I agree, and think that hosiery gives women a more ” “finished” look. Of course my legs aren’t the best so I never gave them up.

    • Tiffany

I love the way my legs look in sheer black hose, but I haven’t worn them in a long time because I can be a fashion scaredy-cat. I like the way she is wearing them in slide 18 with the booties.

  7. Sarah

I think she has an event this weekend, and possibly one next week (no confirmation on that yet), but she is about to retreat for a few months.

She looks adorable in all of these outfits. Bet she can’t wait to be not pregnant tho!

  8. Gine

I’m not a fan of animal print so the Dalmatian coat isn’t my favorite, but I do love that she ended her maternity run on such a sassy note.

  9. Jenny

Selfishly, I’m happy Kate got over her horrible morning sickness fairly quickly so I could enjoy all of her maternity outfits. She has such a classic, elegant style and I totally covet her hair. Here’s to an easy delivery, healthy baby and plenty of cute family and baby pics for us to coo over!

  10. Mary Urech Stallings

I think she is reason enough alone to keep the monarchy.

    •  HelenBackAgain

+1 on that. She is the best thing that’s happened to this family in a long time.

  11. souligner

Wait, wait, wait – what is happening in picture 15?

    • One of the Leahs

As I recall, the Duchess was visiting a museum and hanging out with a pirate mannequin…

      • Rachael

That pirate appears to be lecherously ogling Kate. Made me laugh the first time I saw it, and this time, too.

  12. LoriK

The dalmatian print is actually a coat, not a coat dress. In some pictures you can seem the hem of her dress, which was white. At first glance it looked like she was wearing a slip that was showing a bit (horrors), but fortunately that wasn’t the case.

  13. Jules

The changes pregnancy has brought to her face really suit her! I’m sure she’s ready to get out of the maternity coatdresses, as charming as they are, and into some of her regular clothes again but I can’t help wanting her to keep some of that flattering fullness in her cheeks!

  14. Hannah

There was a champagne bottle, your provider must just not have had the pic. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/06/13/article-2340918-1A4C328C000005DC-39_634x943.jpg

  15. Rebecca

She is just one of my most very favorite people and I love everything she wears and I can’t get enough of her and that is all.

  16. Danielle

I don’t know what it is but I absolutely adore her. Out of all the famous people in the world, for some reason, she and William are the ones I am rooting for the most to live happily ever after. I think she has a terrific style that suits her well, very classy yet not out-dated or stuffy. And those Harry Potter World pictures will always, always, always be my favorite.

  17. annie

I read somewhere that the Dalmation coat is waterproof which is incredibly helpful if you are 1) seaside; and 2) going to be near exploding bottles of champagne. I do wish she’d go a bit long with the hem (easier to bend down and greet children) and weigh her hems so they don’t fly up in the wind but otherwise- she’s flawless.

  18. Andrea

My deepest, most sincere wish for them is to be able to pull off the greatest trick on earth; namely getting her to the hospital when it’s time without a soul knowing or a legion of photographers camped outside their home or hospital, and then the palace sending out an official statement after the baby is born with an underlying, “Neener, Neener, no paps shots for you!!” You know, but royal and classy.

    • Tiffany

I agree. I wish her peace and privacy.

    • Beth

I am sure the palace has “getting people outta here undetected” down cold. After the birth, I believe they plan to have Will and Kate pose for pictures with the new baby outside the hospital. I think this is what the royals traditionally do (at least, that’s what Di and Charles did). You show off the baby, everyone gets their pictures, and then the parents and baby go home.

I really feel for Kate on this one. After I’d had my children, the last thing I’d want to do within hours of giving birth is put on some nylons and a nice dress. Just NO.

    • sacchrainkiss

If she’s low-risk they could probably deliver at the palace. It’s not like it’s not big enough for them to bring in the equipment they need and have a midwife or OB and a nurse or two on call or even staying at the palace. It’s what I would do if I were her. And it’s not like she even has to be the one to clean up because I’m quite sure that there will be someone to do that for her as well.

  19. BrownEyedBetty

Erdem all the way and anything that makes her look modern and edgy. No more fussy trad stuff and please, no more Fascinators. Enough already.

  20. justiner

It’s not her “final official public appearance”, it’s her final SOLO official public appearance

    • Trace

Yes, she’ll be at the Trooping of the Colour this weekend and then take a break til after the baby is born. Lucky Kate to not have to “work” until her due date!

  21. Julia

The dalmatian print was not my favorite. From some angles it looks amazing, but full on (without her hands in front of it), it just doesn’t work for me.

This was her last solo engagement. I believe she’s still supposed to be at Trooping the Colour tomorrow.

  22. Cat

The dalmatian coat isn’t my favorite, but I don’t hate it. I loved the peach outfit and the Erdem– definitely two of my faves from all her maternity wear. Oh, and the polka dot Topshop dress. But really, she’s looked lovely throughout the whole pregnancy. I hope she and Wills get some peace and quiet in the days leading up to the delivery, and hopefully have an easy and uneventful delivery.

  23. Annie S.

My favorite maternity* outfit of hers was the FABULOUS green McQueen she wore at the BBC Sports Awards: http://www.hawtcelebs.com/kate-middleton-at-2012-bbc-sports-personality-of-the-year-awards-in-lodon/

    (Please pardon the silly website.)

*Granted, she was, like, five minutes pregnant at this point so I’m not sure that it counts. I believe they’d announced her pregnancy beforehand; I think this was her first official appearance after her hospitalization.

    • Sajorina

OMG, thank you! That dress is an ABSOLUTE WIN!

    • One of the Leahs

Sweet heavens, that’s a lovely dress. I don’t remember seeing it before.

    • Lizteabee

Good grief! That is gorgeous. I thought I’d seen everything she’d worn in public since she got married (cause I’m crazy like that) but I missed that one.

Also, in those shoes she is taller than David Beckham.

    • esther p.

      va-va-voom! gorgeous!

  24. Lyn

I seem to be going against everyone else on the planet, but I think this is the worst thing she has ever worn. She has wide shoulders but the shape and high neckline of this makes her look like a hulking rugby player or a large rectangular block. Secondly the black and white is the worst thing for her delicate colouring, especially in a wild crazy pattern. I love the hat though.

  25. Sajorina

I love her and I sincerely love everything she’s wearing in this this slideshow! Oh, the COATS! Oh, the BOOTS! FAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. ericajeanine

I wonder what made her feel like the shorter hemline was a better look once she started showing. She looks great, I just wonder how she came about that particular maternity style choice.

    • Kristin

Perhaps she thinks that even if she no longer has a waist, she can at least show off her fabulous legs? I was bloated head to toe when pregnant, but if I had her legs, I’d wear short skirts too!

  27. Claire Z

I just enjoy her so much and I don’t know why. I wasn’t at all excited for the royal wedding but then it happened and I was like well, shit, that was just delightful and now I’m all in.

  28. Goldfish

Whenever it’s Jessica who covers the Royals, the commentary is always extremely coat-heavy. I support this because I love me a coat. Heather does a great job with the Royals, of course, but it’s only with Jessica in the house that I can really get my coat on.

  29. jean

She does get away with quite short skirts, now that I’m looking at them. They qualify as minis. Of course the hose makes them totally appropriate and she’s always very properly covered now. Love her hats too. Nice to know she shares that love with the Queen. Here’s hoping for a princess because the clothes! Suri Cruise will finally have some competition.

  30. Nancy

Dammit Middleton! The fact that I really enjoy seeing what she’s wearing and she seems really nice always really confuses my very vehement anti-monarchist philosophy. I don’t know how to reconcile these feelings. I might have to pretend she’s actually a republican mole, bringing the whole system down from the inside. Whilst looking amazing.

  31. Squirrel!

“Because a young person dressing like a granny is charming and a sort of slightly older person dressing like a granny sometimes just looks old.”

I can TOTALLY relate to this.

  32. JessMcGuire54

Ethan. although Donald`s remark is astonishing… on monday I bought a gorgeous Chevrolet when I got my check for $7624 this-past/five weeks and just a little over 10/k this past-munth. with-out a doubt this is the most comfortable work I’ve had.
