Well Played, Kate Middleton

well-played

It is, by the way, Kate and Wills’s anniversary, so if you are feeling nostalgic, take a talk down Ye Olde Memoryie Lanee and revisit our live-blog of the wedding. We laughed, we cried, we yawned (we pulled an all-nighter), we wore caftans.

I just love that her bump has finally popped!

She looks really lovely…so soft and pretty.

She looks like a walking bowl of sherbet. I mean that in a good way.

That was my first thought, too!

This woman truly wears pregnancy well. So frickin’ elegant…

definitely peachy in a good way

Such a great coat, and great color. Massive coat envy. Hell, I might have bump envy. Lord knows I won’t look that cute at any point in any hypothetical pregnancy, let alone at 6 months!

She is definitely nailing the pregnancy wardrobe. Not a high-waisted ruffled pant in sight!

I just love her. And her coats.

Ordinarily I would put that colour in the domain of mother of the bride, but she totally gets away with it.

I don’t know if I am such a fan of the shorter skirt here. I keep catching my breath in case it dips in and up just a little more.

I just want to say how much I love the fact that Kate has taken her pregnancy, of all times, to really consistently rock the short hemlines. Girlfriend has some great stems.

She does, they’re beautiful. Smooth, straight knees, slender yet curvy, everything in perfect proportion – she can wear almost anything on those legs and it’ll look good. If you’ve got it, flaunt it! And I applaud that she is doing just that, yet so tastefully.

She’s so used to clothes that accent her tiny waist, I wondered if pregnancy might be a difficult fashion adjustment for her, but no, not at all! Simply went straight to showing off those gorgeous gams. Good call!

I wonder if there’s a Royal Stylist who helps, or she’s just really good at this.

You live in London, or Manhattan, you have the coats. Or Manhattan. In Los Angeles, coats languish. Sadly. She looks tremendous, as ush.

      Extra Manhattan, bad editing.

      • Helen
        +16

That’s okay, extra Manhattan works when discussing coats. “Yes, shorten it about two inches, please, Al, and extra Manhattan on the lapels.”

Love this color, and love that she even has more nail color than usual and it matches the dress perfectly.

And I love her hair curled like this…and that she also has the annoying hair trait of one side curling better than the other, as mine does.

That apricot color is very charming on her. It gives her a really nice glow (or perhaps that’s the pregnancy) — but regardless, she looks lovely and healthy and happy. Well played.

Love that she has a great pair of heels she loves and wears them often, like a normal person.

I’m starting to think she must have multiple pairs of the same shoe. I only say this because I have pearly nude heels, and I wear them often as well, and they are scuffed in some places now, and just generally looking well-loved. I just wonder how she keeps hers looking so pristine! Though, she’s probably a lot more graceful than me too. I suppose not tripping on the pavement all the time does help preserve your shoes!

How freakin cute does she look?

And I have coat envy too…..

I do not like the no-color dress and heels, but that coat is darling and she looks great in it.

Another fan of the short skirts here. I don’t know why but somehow it works with pregnancy belly.

Love that her bump is showing – she is super cute. I actually wish the skirts were just a little longer. I am also pregnant and feel like I would be constant worried that the dress would be pulling up with my bump getting in the way. Could just be me…her legs look great….just feels like it would look a little more pulled together with a tad bit longer hem.

That hair is super cute on her, too. Does she have a natural wave? Is she maybe experimenting with different styles, trying to find one that’s less labor intensive for when the baby comes and thrice weekly blowouts are a thing of the past? (I mean, I assume she could keep on with the blowouts, but it would be at odds with the “she’s just like us!” image the Firm’s been pushing.)

And while I’ve never been a member of the “she’s too thin” brigade, I must say that the extra bit of pregnancy weight really suits her. I hope she doesn’t feel pressured into taking it all off as quickly as possible after the birth.

I want to see her coat closet. It must be tremendous- half the size of Kensington Palace!

Me too! That is the thing I wonder about most — how do they manage the clothing? Is it like a library? I wish someone would tell us.

Maybe it’s like Cher Horowitz’s closet, with revolving hanger racks!

I want to Bling Ring her coat closet. Seriously. I love me some coats. I live in the frigid northern Midwest, and a good looking, yet functional coat is very important in my life.

ARRGH! She is bringing back 80s fashion and this is NOT GOOD. Almost no one looks good in peach/coral/apricot (although the Duchess comes close).

Does anyone remember this awful pastel was the color of choice at 80s weddings (yuk) along with Diana-esque mutton sleeves??

ALERT: Watch out for shoulder pads… This color faux pas may be their chance for a comeback. NOOOO!

I’ll chalk this disaster up to baby hormones.

And, your Highness, please BURN THAT COAT. You have dozens, if not hundreds, of gorgeous options already in your closet.

    • Kimmy

100% agree. I wore that exact color to my confirmation and my junior high graduation, with a 13 year-old’s take on Diana-esque hair. It was often paired with a pale minty green as I recall. I would accept this on the Queen, but on no one younger. I agree about liking the skirt length and I suspect the dress might be fine if not for the PTSD associated with that color. Is no one else old enough to remember wicker furniture with this color upholstery?

      • Rachel

Agree with Sweetsinger and Kimmy. It’s very Eighties and older lady colour. And did anyone notice how tight the sleeves look?

        •  amys
          0

Agree! I don’t think the color looks good on her at all.

          • Franziska
            0

Oh, I’m so pleased I’m not the only one. This colour is too peachy for her. It’s just so boring. Too old and too bland for her. If the coat had some kind of woven pattern on it, or the dress was patterned, yes, but this looks like it’s made out of cheap polyester.

The 80′s was actually great – they had no fear of color then. Diana managed to look f-ing fantastic despite some of the 80′s that was less great….every decade has it’s own “problems”. Look back at Diana’s clothing….the colors were gorgeous.

I don’t quite get the put-downs on colors, no color “belongs” to only one era…

Also in agreement! I think she looks beautiful, radiant, and happy. But I can’t go for this coat or the dress, or even the green coat from the other day. All these pastels, and even the cuts, look kind of old-fashioned to me. I’d like to see her in something more modern.

I’m 14 weeks along (with twins!!) and I am jealous of her gorgeous hair… and her coats. Curse you Kate! I can only hope I look so put together for the rest of my pregnancy. The color here is great and I am liking the shorter hemlines– though also a bit weirded out because she’s usually in slightly longer dresses/skirts and it seems a bit jarring that all of a sudden she’s pulled out the shorter hemline. Regardless, she’s working it. Kate, can I borrow a few of these in a couple months?

I like that she wore such a bright and spring-y color today, especially as it was to a children’s hospice. She just glowed and looked wonderful.

I find the skirt-length bashing kind of annoying (not so much on this site as elsewhere). I remember shopping when pregnant and being totally dismayed by the dowdy skirt lengths. Like I don’t need a mini or anything all Kardash-ed out, but everyone’s really going to die about my lack of modesty if I wear a skirt above the knee? Sheesh.

I was thinking she was wearing too much blush. Hadn’t considered the cold factor. Hopefully it’s that, otherwise a misstep for her makeup.

Adorable. I seriously wish I had the budget for a closetful of coats to go with various outfits. I kind of wish she had worn a metallic shoe, but I guess that isn’t really her bag.

Diana would have. She really had a great sense of style, and the silver shoes, the gold, they all looked perfect on her.

I like, but points off for the make-up. The rouge seems too matchy to the peach colors of the dress and coat, and also, just maybe a smidge heavy on the cheeks.

I actually think the elderly lady to her left in the second photo has better style – her coat, her bag, her brooch are all perfection. Kate looks cute here, but that’s it.

I just feel like the dress is a tad short, especially when she clutches both hands under her belly, as she is prone to doing… It’s not scandalous, but perhaps a teeny bit unseemly? I’m not saying she needs to go all below-the-knee, but I would’ve liked another inch or two.

Like everything else Kate Middleton puts on, if it was on someone else, you would scream “snooze-ville” and fug it.

So bored by her. I understand that she has some rules she has to follow, but that’s how you know when someone has good style: because they can get real creative despite the box they are confined within.

She wears X coat or X shift with hose and black, brown or nude pumps. EVERY TIME. Am I the only person that sees this?

    • WaityCrotchMonkey
      0

Yes I agree. She’s scared of color. I’m so sick of the beige shoes and she did the same with those butt-ugly dark blue wedgies {remember those !!!? }. Princess Diana was never afraid of color. She’s wear all kinds of colored shoes, dresses, hats…it was a joy to look at her. But she also had that real English look, that doesn’t have…Diana had the fair skin, blonde hair.

Look at her hair! I mean, seriously…. LOOK AT IT! How does she get it so softly curled and shiny?!?
