Well Played, Jessica Simpson

well-played

Well, well, well:

Although, as a reader pointed out to us, it seems weird that her shoes don’t match her dress at a shoe designer’s awards event, I think we are looking at THE BEST Jessica Simpson has looked IN YEARS. This dress is legitimately good. Not just “good, considering,” or “better than usual,” or “at least it kind of fits.” It’s actually GOOD and GOOD ON HER, like, FOR REAL, not just in comparison to the cracked out stuff she usually wears. It’s like SOMEONE WHO CARED dressed her, and cared enough to BRING THE CORRECT SIZE. I don’t know who that person was, but J Simp and the entire Simp Organization owns her a drink. And probably a wad of cash.

It would be well played if it weren’t so damn tight. Go up a size, girl! You’re pregnant; no shame in that! Also, the shoes, while nice on their own, are really wanky with that dress. Two reds do not make a right.

Does she have to cradle her belly in every picture now, though?

Why do pregnant women, especially celebs, ALWAYS do that thing with their hands? WE KNOW IT’S A BABY. You don’t have to act like you’re laying claim to it- IT IS YOUR OWN STOMACH. Uterus. Whatever.

Anyway- I’m not so sure about this outfit. Up a size would be good, but there’s also a feeling of “I’m the hot pregnant woman” as opposed to the 11 billion other pregnant women on the planet. You don’t have to flaunt it when you’re pregnant. We know that someone found you hot already.

Her hair looks really nice though.

It’s a subconscious protective gesture to put one’s hands on a pregnant belly. I can only imagine how scary a wall of paps can be when your baby is a foot closer to them than you are.

      • Kit
        0

I was gonna say this. In almost every pic of me when I was pregnant (except pics of me at home) I had my hands in practically this exact position. Subconscious protective gesture for the win!

      • Kate
        0

Have to agree. I have not had a baby yet, but I think a lot of women gravitate towards this pose for very natural and instinctual reasons. At least here she’s not doing the super belly cradle in a flowy dress where it would seem she’s trying to show people she’s preggers not just fat, right?

Anyway, though I agree she probably could have gone up a size for the best look, she looks so happy and nice here. I have an inkling she’ll be a really loving caring mother, even though I don’t know this lady at all. Good for her looking so happy and beaming while carrying another person in her body and retaining water and gaining lots of weight, etc…

I would probably have gone with slightly less matchy shoes, but they aren’t all bad. If they were a bit darker, I think I’d be 100% on board.

Go Jessica! I hope you are so happy! I love to see people get what they’ve always wanted, and I have a feeling she’s always wanted to create a happy family whether or not her celebrity career was successful. I think it can be hard for talented people to reconcile those ambitions when they are younger. It’s an awesome thing to be a mom, and I’m happy to see her looking so darn happy.

OK- I’m mistaken. I just did a GIS for “pregnant celebrities” and only found like 2 pictures of women holding their bellies.

I think I need nachos, and a nap.

      • AMS
        0

You might be thinking of catalog or magazine images. When I was pregnant, it drove me nuts that every single photo in all those mommy magazines I would see at the doctor’s office or in any maternity-related ad or catalog featured some model holding her belly with both hands, like J.Simp., or somehow using her hands as if to point it out to you: “Look! Baby in here!” None of this, of course, means that you should not go have nachos and a nap anyway.

I agree with being on the fence about this outfit. She needs a bigger size for one thing, but I don’t think the top flatters such a large busted woman. On the runway, it had sort of a cowl-like effect which would be deadly on a full bust, but the bodice pulling as it is across her armpits is wickedly unflattering.

She needs to lose about 5 inches of extensions and get some warm low-lights.

Those shoes are KILLING me, though. The color is off, but the main thing is they’re YSL shoes and she’s at a SHOE EVENT presumably because of her own shoe line, yet she isn’t wearing HER shoes. I guess those are only good for us little people and that’s, frankly, just obnoxious.

      • Kit
        0

there are some who would say it’s obnoxious to wear your OWN shoes to a shoe event. I don’t think she can win here. If you’re not going to wear your own shoes, you might as well wear ugly ones. lol

      • Geemee
        0

YES on the extensions and warm low-lights. And can I just say I never heard of low-lights until Tabitha on “Shear Genius”?

    • Laura V

I think it’s not just a subconscious protective gesture, but also, your abs being stretched out like that is not the most comfortable thing in the world, and the kicking from the internal resident doesn’t help. If someone was banging on your abdominal wall with bony appendages, you would probably put your hands on it all the time, too; it helps cushion the blows. (At least, it does for me; I assume it is true of others.)

    • Blue Buddha
      0

Being 4 weeks away from giving birth, I started standing like that when I felt the little guy moving all the time. Partially it’s protective and partially it makes my stomach feel better with the warmth and weight of my hands.

I also think the paps are screaming for her to do that. Those are the money shots.

  4. neiges

I agree with Jessica, she looks really really good, and happy, and happy to grab that belly-baby of hers. Good for her. Or should we not touch our bellies when we are pregnant so as not to flaunt it? Sounds very strange – and cranky – to me, sorry.

    • Annie E
      0

Word. I think she looks great, the dress fits nicely (it’s not too tight), and it’s OKAY to touch your belly. For one, she’s Jessica Simpson, so I feel like it’s just a given that she’s going to be totally psyched about her pregnancy and unabashedly displaying it. And two, I imagine the photographers at these events encourage their pregnant subjects to touch their bellies.

      • Annie E
        0

Oh AND, it’s a big protrusion on the front of your body. Where else are you going to put your hands?

(Secretly trying to reply to your second comment, but the “reply” link isn’t showing…)

I know, right? I feel like if I had a big ol’ preggo belly, it would be actively difficult NOT to rest my hands on it. It’s like how I can’t keep my hands out of my pockets or the strap of my purse–these elbows just want to take a load off, I guess.

    • Dazie
      0

      Sorry- I should elaborate.

Touch your pregnant self all you want. Be happy in your pregnancy, that’s cool. What I don’t understand is why pregnant women in “staged” photos like this always grab their bellies. Always. Like we’d forget they were pregnant and think they were just gaining weight. Like they want us to focus solely on their growing child and forget about them.

I’ve been pregnant. I give HUGE props to the pregnant women who pretty themselves up and make an effort to look put together when they go out. I spent both of my pregnancies longing for sweatpants, and that was even without gaining a ton of weight. I just don’t understand why (mostly) pregnant celebs don’t embrace the fact that they have a 9 month pass from looking like the hottest thing in Hollywood. They’re BUSY GROWING A CHILD. Let them get away with wearing flats, or something that looks nice without pushing up and shoving up.

      That’s all.

      • neiges

Hum hum… I have to admit that my sister-in-law had some photos taken by a professional photographer when she was pregnant and they were exactly like your description. So annoying, bless her heart. Have you seen pregant Brenda in Six Feet Under? She sent the vibes you’re describing : baby groing in here, huge boobs, don’t care, I’m happy (although her character wasn’t).

      • Kris M

I wonder if the dress and shoes looked the same color in the dressing room, etc. I had a pair of shoes once that looked black in the store, and said black on the box, but when I was wearing them with my black dress for a concert the stage lights made them look brown-y colored (oops).

It’s nice to see JSimps looking so happy.

She looks amazing and glowing and happy! Isn’t that what we all want for JSimp afterall?

Also, it’s not like you can put your hands on your hips when you are pregnant. That looks even more ridiculous. She’s just loving on her baby. Can’t blame her.

    • Kate
      0

Right? Where do they go if not near the belly? If they’re not on your belly, people still comment on the belly. If you don’t cradle, they sort of hang limply at the side. I think it’s hard unless you spend a LOT of time in front of the mirror working the right pose…

(Note to self: clearly need to spend LOADS of time in front of the mirror when pregnant to learn what to do with hands despite that crazy crazy huge belly…)

  11. heather
    0

I’m willing to forgive the shoes. Somewhere along the way, I developed a soft spot for her and right now I’m just so happy to see her looking so happy that the mismatch is irrelevant to me. Go, JSimp!

  12. Sarah

She looks fabulous and happy. Yay! I don’t envy those pregnancy boobs though. My own were huge but not that huge and it is just so hard to fit them into anything and keep them comfy.

As for the fit of the dress, if I were her it’s exactly how I’d want it to fit. Its a stretch knit with ruching — it’s meant to be close fitting (but likely doesn’t feel tight at all) and is meant to show a mama-to-be’s curves. When I was pregnant and had a glorious belly (after years of waiting for one!), I wanted clothes to show it off, not hide it.

  13. Kary

I kind of agree with TLo on this one — the dress is lovely, but she needs to go up a size so that it’s not pulling across her thighs and so the drape of the bodice isn’t obliterated by pregnancy boobs. I’m also in the TLo camp about her hair — yellow, fake, and dated.

It’s a great color on her and she does look happy, but I would have liked a stronger eye and an actual color on her lips.

  14. Emily

I read both this blog and Tom and Lorenzo, and it’s always interesting to me when you guys have entirely different takes on the same outfit. They thought she was in need of a complete style intervention here. Personally, I think she looks really beautiful and happy. But the dress does seem like it would look better if she went up a size.

  15. theotherjennifer
    0

She looks fantastic. She probably can’t see her feet but I love the color of those shoes and her hair looks awesome. I wore leggings and sweatshirts the whole time I was pregnant so for her to get dolled up and hoist those ginormous boobs into a dress that is a great color and FITS (it is not tight) is pretty impressive.

  16. CJ
    0

When you are pregnant, you have to put the shoes near the dress BEFORE you put them on to see if they match, because once they are on, it’s really hard to see your feet. But I give her a pass; in different lighting they may have matched and she looks so darn happy and pretty, that I am just happy for her.

Girlfriend looks like she loves herself and her life, which is a welcome change for her. And I love the dress

The color is great on her. I’m really not liking the bodice on the dress though; it makes her left boob look absolutely huge, and the right one about 1/3 the size of the other.

    • Kit
      0

I find this kind of wrap style ALWAYS makes my boobs look that way, which is why I never wear them. It may be that one of JS’s boobs IS slightly bigger, and the dress emphasizes it.

      Mine are perfect, of course.

      ;)

I think she looks great! That is saying a lot considering how she usually looks….
    Good on ya JSimp :)

I, too, have developed a major soft spot for Jessica Simpson and love to see her looking so happy! I think she looks great, matching shoes or not. I don’t think the dress is too tight-it’s just the stretchy material of the dress. Going up a size would probably result in bagging/sagging.
As someone who is not, nor has never been, pregnant, I can’t say that I know how hard it is to get all dolled up and go out when you are pregnant. However, my unpregnant self can barely get out of the house with dry hair and make-up on, so I applaud anyone who can look that good carrying extra weight in the belly AND the boobs and also look happy about it. Well played, indeed.

  21. Steph
    0

I like the dress, as at least from this angle it covers up and doesn’t acentuate her GINORMOUS pregnancy boobs. (Or just her ginormous boobs in general.) I saw a picture of her in a different outfit the other day, and holy hell it look like those things were gonna strangle her.

    • Rebecca
      0

When you start big you get massively, freakishly, porn star big during pregnancy. And that’s before the milk come in – hooray. I totally sympathize with her. Mine were that big, but I’m nearly 6 feet tall. I think she looks fantastic. Healthy and happy!

    • TheGardenHoe
      0

I agree, those things are taking over the neighbourhood and growing exponentially. Has anyone considered that maybe that dress fit with a bit of ease when she left the house but was already to small by the photcall? Not entirely out of the question….

  22. Jennifer
    0

Hmmm… wonder if they hired a new stylist to dress her now that she’s pg? If so, they should definitely keep that person post-baby! She does look much better than usual, though agree about the non-matching shoes. They almost look burgundy/purple to me.

  23. Billie
    0

Why all the haters? Where else would she put her hands with a growing belly? Hips, awkward. Sides, awkward. It’s not that big of a deal. She looks, great, happy, prettier, and more put together than she ever has, pregnant or not. Looking that fresh well into pregnancy is a major feat. Props to her.

  24. LoriK
    0

I really, really wish she had gone up a size. This is so tight that the line of the dress has been destroyed. The top of it drapes in a really nice way when it’s being worn correctly. Even with the size problem she does look better than she has in ages Good for her.

  25. Pat B
    0

I love the color on her and I don’t mind the size…it looks polished and glam without being over the top. Her makeup and hair are pretty. She’s preg-glowing, something that she is (and should be!) totally rocking while she’s got it! I don’t even mind the powerboobs. What I don’t like is the way the ‘sleeves’ (?) on the bodice are slipping down and draping across her upper arms. It makes her look shorter and wider, whereas a slimmer strap would have highlighted the boob but given her a bit more contrast. On the whole though, this is a great look on her.

  26. Emily
    0

Maybe it only looks tight if you’ve seen the photo of the dress not on Jessica that is available on TLo’s site. It’s supposed to have some nice draping at the top, but on Jessica it’s pulled so tight all the draping is gone. http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/11/jessica-simpson-in-donna-karan.html

  27. Lina
    0

Yeah, I agree with the call to go up a size. Also, cut off half a foot of hair, srsly. I’m not sold on the shoes, but I really like her earrings and it’s nice to see her looking happy and healthy.

  28. Melissa
    0

I kind of like the shoes. I think it would look better if they were more purple . The dress size is fine, and lastly lets all just be happy she’s wearing a proper bra.

  29. vandalfan
    0

I’m not a fan of this bodice with large swath of criss-cross. It make her poor swollen mammaries look even bigger than her abdomen by adding the width of her sleeves. The flowy skirt should have just kept on flowing down and out from the empire bust line.

I’m with Dazie, and I don’t think it’s hating. It’s just that, you know, to the pregnant gals in tightly stretched fabric and hands grabbing the tummy like they’re shoplifting a pumpkin: ladies? It HAS been done before. You did not invent pregnancy. It’s just not that attractive, no more than skeletal limbs from excessive dieting. One should emphasize one’s strong points.

  30. Amanda
    0

    She loosk absolutely stunning!

  31. Chasmosaur
    0

She should have worn red shoes, but she’s pregnant and said she’s bloating. I’m betting she’s wearing what fits.

As for the tightness – one of my friends who was several months pregnant bought an outfit for my wedding the week before the event, so it would fit her correctly. She then said she should have waited to buy it that afternoon, because she went through a massive bloating phase during the intervening week, and the outfit became tight. I am willing to cut her a little slack, since this may have looked good when she tried it on ;)

    • Gigi
      0

And a lot of times when heavily pregnant, the tightness feels good. It’s reining in all the growing boobs, butt and tummy aka The Bloat.

There is no way she could have found an off-the-rack dress that allowed nice draping at the top and would still be flattering. Her proportions are all OOC right now.

  32. Beth
    0

I think this looks great. I took a look at Emily’s link to TLo, and I don’t agree with them at all. I love a draped top, but that’s not draping. It’s more of a wrap-dress than anything; a better picture is here: http://www.stylebop.com/look.php?nbr=13667&PHPSESSID=466dd63c7679d0b1077d340e7eb3eac4

The skirt is meant to narrow. A larger size would simply have changed the location of the bunching. If anything, this is a good fit, because it avoids that weird look Hilary Duff had going on awhile ago, but also lets her avoid that whole “I’m holding my hand UNDER my bump because this drape-y maternity dress could billow out and show everything at any moment” look.

Also, giving her a pass on the slight dress/shoes mismatch. They seem to be the same slightly darker color of her nails, creating a slight contrast.

  33. Bella
    0

Not well played, IMO. She looks like she is ready to explode in several directions. While I can see she looks happy, and that’s great, why the extreme body hugging dress? Wouldn’t a body skimming dress be a little more tasteful?

  34. MG
    0

The dress is better than she usually does, but the reason she just looks good in general is that she has the legit preggo glow, and she is genuinely and happily smiling as opposed to the open mouth pout we saw on her for so many years. Plus her weave looks good. It’s an average dress but the rest of the package is elevating it.

  35. Anne B
    0

It’s hard for me to take issue with anything J-Simp is doing here. Not even the shoes. (They’ve got to be a bit harder to see from the top, you know.)

As for “happy and pregnant”, I just applaud women who can make both things happen at the same time. Pregnancy does not feel awesome, so I just need to say — to women who clean up nice and are cheerful (like J-Simp), who go to work every day (like my dentist), or who cook Thanksgiving dinner while 8 months pregnant and then go out and bust a move to “SexyBack” (like my sister) — WELL PLAYED. Because pregnancy’s no picnic, and that’s a fact.

I don’t care how any of you stand, what you wear, where you put your hands. Thank you for being out there in life, making the most of those bun-in-the-oven days.

Including you, rosy, happy Jessica Simpson. <3

Yes!!! Thank you!!! SO right, and I love to see the positive support from time to time in comments in this blog.

Plus, I don’t know how it happened, but I’ve been rooting for Jessica for awhile now, and I so hope she is truly happy. She just seems like a really nice person who’d thrive with a “typical” family life.

A baby belly seems to be akin to pockets on a dress; it’s somewhere for your hands to go during a photo op.

  37. Sadie
    0

I never held my hands like that in any photo taken of me during either of my pregnancies. Also, if her boobs are this big already, they’re going to need their own zip code when her milk comes in.

  38. Blue Buddha

Like many above, I too have a soft spot for her. I have no idea why; maybe it’s all the weight bashing she’s received. But, I like the outfit including both the color of the dress and color of the shoes. I have a big pet peeve against a red/pink combo, so it’s nice to see this one be red/berry. They’re nice analogous colors especially with her nails. It’s like she’s almost dressed monotone, but there’s excitement there.

I think this is more of an Unfug-it-Up or a Better Played. I hate that “hands cradling baby” pose that most preggers gals do, but considering how much Jessica’s been needled about her weight by the media, can’t say I could blame her for doing it, in case anyone’s been living under a rock and thinks ate the whole turkey at Thanksgiving.

Am I the only one who actually liked her as a brunette? At any rate, I’m not a fan of the long Barbie yellow look. I think short & brunette would be a really cute change for her right now. It’d be all pretty and fall/wintery-looking, plus short hair would probably be easier, as her pregnancy progresses.

The dress is dire-too tight and her boobs are taking over the world as a result! Bad shoes too. How does she sell gazillions of clothes?!

  48. Amaranth

Do not like those shoes. It’s like someone bought them and paired them with the dress on memory of the colour alone, and failed on the matchy-matchy bit of it. I really do give her props for the rest though; the softness of her hair is utterly flattering, and she looks so happy in a terrifying position (hello wall of cameras!). The dress suits her but I’m with the pack, I want to see her in a size up. But for the design, it’s utterly flattering for her and not at all slutty or huge.

Dress is great – fits just fine as currently fashionable skintight pregnancy clothing, and the bodice drape is interesting and reasonably flattering to a large bosom. Hair looks very dated, but who cares.
