Well Played, Diane Kruger

well-played

Man, I forgot how much I enjoy Cannes. People bring it, and then sometimes other (crazy) people decide to stay there instead of coming home for their bail hearings and then claim it’s because someone stole their passport, LINDSAY. But I’m sure La Krugs has her papers all sorted. Let’s look at her outfits!

In my next life I will look like that and wear that blue dress all the time.

That first dress is definitely a Diane Kruger only. Because she understands it has just enough cling to stay put, but didn’t have it cinched so tight she was bulging. Exceedingly well played.

And the blue dress is just elegant and classy. Why can’t more of Hollywood manage to be elegant and classy?

This website used to be so easy to navigate and now with all the embedded video, ads, whatever, it’s slow and jerky and not a fun user experience at all. It makes me not want to visit anymore and I used to come to the site and hang out for awhile! Please consider streamlining it a bit – I don’t even know how to flip through current stories anymore!

Hey Laura, maybe you should consider changing your ISP?

I have the same problems you do when surfing at work (here and on other sites), but at home, it’s fast and smooth – zero problems at all.

If it’s possible, you might want to change it. The ads and videos are what pay the girls to do their job – provide us with fun content – and I for one, don’t want them to lose a single cent of it! In fact I hope they make lots more money, ‘cuz I’m sure they’re not rich as a result of this site!

Download the Ad-Blocker Extension (if you use Firefox or Chrome. I’m sure they have something similar with Safari, not sure about Explorer…). It literally does away with ALL of the ads. I love it.

          0

There is something else going on today. A survey with no “close” button took over my computer. Had to exit and come back. I don’t mind looking at the ads in exchange for the entertainment here, but sometimes things get out of control.

        • Anu
          0

OMG! Thank you for that Kate!! Just downloaded the ad blocker and it works like a charm. So far I haven’t come across any ad without a close tab, but sometimes it is like walking across a mine-field (of course I know what that’s like) – accidentally brush your mouse over something and BOOM it expands and starts talking! Not.Anymore.

However, coming back to fashion. Diane Kruger needs to open up a school in the heart of hollywood and teach the Miley’s, Lindsay’s, and other whatsherface’s of the world how to dress like a cool glass of water. She could call it The Kruger School of Anti-Fug.

Check out a program called NoScript–you can put this on your browswer (I’m using it on Firefox for a Mac) and it will cut out a lot of the scripts that track your activity on line, and all the script that creates those ads and videos. It may take a little longer for a site to load (and you can certainly adjust and select which sites you’ll bar scripts from and which ones you won’t) but it will make the site function much more smoothly.

She’s amazing. That lace-up dress is hideous otherwise but she works it. And the blue dress looks like a dream.

Am I the only one that things D.Krug’s short dresses are always TOO short? I feel like I’m always on vagina alert when looking at photos of her.

    • Julie

No, you are not the only one. But I just don’t get her in general. I dislike most of what she wears, to be honest.

      • anny

I don’t get her fashion iconistation either. She’s real pretty and I know folks around here like her boyfriend/husband/whatever, but her clothes are generally meh at best, IMO.

The aqua is pretty, if a little predictable. The brown…reminds me of Keira Knightley as Guinevere or a leather Ren Faire dress or a costume from Xena. I don’t know. I don’t *mind* it, really, it just seems very genre. OTOH, this is Cannes — if it’s appropriate on any red carpet, it’s this one.

The corset thing is kinda fug for me. Yes, she’s got the bod for it but once you suggested the riggings on a ship, that’s all I can see. Also kinda wish it was in a more spring-y color.

The blue dress is lovely and flow-y but I feel a bit too much for her frame. She’s got a great bod and this covers it up a bit too much..?? I think I’d love it a lot more on someone else.

    • Annie E

Yes, I agree re the lace-up dress. I think it’s tacky even on Kruger.

      • Kate
        0

What if the “riggings” (aptly put) were more ribbonlike and matched the color of the dress? Instead of the black bungie cords? Yes, it would still be an Only Diane Kruger dress, but maybe one notch up the taste meter.

  8. Chicklet

The lace-up dress is totally an Only Diane Kruger dress; somehow she makes it work. I don’t know if it’s her modeling experience, or just that it fits with her overall vibe of being fashion-forward without becoming a slave to outlandishness or trends.

  9. Kit

I agree with Betty – the brown is fug for me – but I do love the aqua – so lovely.

OT – I can’t wait until you do SWINTON in that glorious copper!!!!

That dress is one hostage situation I would love to be skinny enough (and classy enough) to be in. And the other is great too.

Damn you Diane! I want to hate you because youre so pretty but I just cant!

Diane Kruger, you are RUINING MY LIFE. Both of these dresses are fantastic in their own way, and she is the only person I can think of that could pull off the corset-y one without looking like a stuffed sausage. And the colour! So rich. Like a delicious red wine. The blue one makes her look like a goddess. So unfair. Also unfair is how much I still love her, even sans Pacey.

  16. kay

The red dress is defs a ‘diane kruger only’ dress. The blye is beautiful. But seriously, the lack of joshua jackson is giving me heart palpitations. I’m so serious I’m not even calling him pacey. WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

Having nothing to do with Ms. Kruger here, I am waiting with bated breath for the Fug Girls to unleash on Micaela Schaefer and her … dress? … from the MIB3 Premier last night.

I agree that the lace-up dress is something only she would pull off and it’s well balanced with tasteful hair and makeup.

    Also, THOSE SHOES are awesome.

Love the dresses. Hate hate hate hate hate the shoes with the last dress. While I’m all for lengthening one’s legs, it’s not worth the clunkiness of mile-high platforms.

“Also: if I were to wear this, I shudder to imagine the way my back/side fat would make a run for it.”

This made me giggle. Before reading your commentary, I was looking at that photo in awe that no fat was squeezing between all that lacing.

Am dying of envy. I don’t usually like side cut-outs on dresses, but, as you said, we can’t see her hipbones. And there’s no side-boob. She looks pretty damn fab. As for the lovely blue dress, this is what I look like in my Mary Sue fantasies.

  25. McLisa

Fug the brown dress. She looks like a gladiator’s girlfriend, however, props for no flesh spillage through the straps!

I LOVE the blue dress. That last shot looks like she’s about to slip gracefully onto a crescent moon just out of frame and be lifted away. The gods await! Beautiful!

kay, don´t worry, Josh is in Cannes, he arrived yesterday. He will be there with her for another photo-op. Josh is Diane´s train-bearer, her purse-holder, her accessory, her entourage. Josh is a perfect doormat, I mean, boyfriend.

    • kay
      0

:( no they’re so cute! They’re the only hollywood couple i believe will actually make it. But you’ve calmed me down lol. I am too invested in Pacey’s life

      • jj
        0

You think they will make it? If he continues behave like a man without balls or pride, then yes, they will. She doesn´t want a husband, but she needs someone , she can go to events with. And Josh is good enough to be her entourage.

        • Jessica
          0

I don’t know that we know enough about their personal life to make that call? Plenty of men with balls are happy to carry their wife’s bag at her big events.

        • jj
          0

Jessica, she is not his wife. And she doesn´t want to be his wife. He is not good enough for her to marry. He is just another poor bastard she can manipulate.

        • kay
          0

yeah, good to know you’re friends with them so that you can make comments on how healthy their relationship is. I love how in the know you are- you must be bffs with him to know what Diane Kruger thinks

        • Emily
          0

Diane actually has a pretty realistic view on marriage, as evidenced by her comment to Glamour in 2011:
“”Without sounding pessimistic, I learned that I don’t believe in marriage,” she tells Glamour. (The actress was married to French actor Guillaume Canet from 2001 to 2006.) “I believe in a commitment that you make in your heart. There’s no paper that will make you stay,” she adds.”

The aqua is nice, it’s lovely, whatever. The burgundy dress is a slam-f’in-dunk. MY WORD.

Corset dress, kind of looks like a style of lawn chair? When the fabric is similarly-tied to the frame?

  29. Julia
    0

Debbi, I came on to say the shape of the corset dress is like the banqueting chairs you get at conference venues. And the close-up just makes me think of something lashed down on a boat. So it’s a fug from me. Love the green though.

  30. Edith

I can’t think coherently about either dress, because as soon as you said “Grace Kelly,” I had a rage blackout remembering that Nicole Kidman has been hired to portray her. (This makesme even more angry than the LiLo as La Liz casting, because there’s no way she’ll keep the part. She couldn’t hold onto the part of Linda Lovelace, after all).

Diane Kruger looks flawless in both dresses.

    • nichole
      0

I agree – I had the same moment of rage. Why Nicole Kidman? You know she’s going to botox the heck out of her face trying to achieve that serene look that GK had. Makes me sad. Diane Kruger would have been a lovely casting choice.

I love the blue dress – such a gorgeous color.

      • LibraryChick
        0

I think someone like Naomi Watts would capture the Grace Kelly aura more effectively, but as much as I enjoyed Moulin Rouge-era Nicole Kidman, she doesn’t make me think of Grace Kelly.

Back to the dresses. The maroon/burgundy/aubergine is SCA on the top, high school cheerleading on the bottom. If I could reconcile the medieval with high school cheerleading, I would probably like it better. Ms. Kruger looks fine, but it’s just cognitive dissonance for me. The seafoam one is just right. If Ms. Kruger were to audition for the role of Grace Kelly, it would be a great choice.

Both look like movie costumes from “Troy”.

  32. Alix

Am I the only one who doesn’t get all the Kruger love? Yes, she’s pretty enough, but not in an especially memorable way.

When I saw the rigging dress, I thought trampoline.

This woman is too gorgeous. I love both of these outfits – though again, the first would make a normal person look like 10 lbs of mud in a 5 lb sack. That blue is unreal on her.

  34. Jules

She looks fan-freaking-tastic in that merlot dress. Love it.

  35. CJ

That sea foam gown is divine. I immediately thought of Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief, but she makes it her own and doesn’t let it wear her. Gorgeous.

  36. Issie

That first one isn’t my favorite, but she makes it work somehow. I’m always envious of how she can take a dress that would look Trampy McTramperson on everyone else and class it up. And she really does look like Grace Kelly in the second, it’s breath taking.

  37. jjdaddyo
    0

I am on record her as declaring Ms. Kruger a goddess, so would it be nit-picking if I said that I think she needs bigger hair with the “Tie me up, tie me down” dress?

  38. Amalia
    0

She looks amazing in both. I am not often on board with her fashion choices but I don’t see how anyone could argue with how she looks in these two. (Feel free to argue about the merits of lace-up clothing in general; DK is going to be the exception that proves the rule IMO.) If GFY ever does a *reverse* Fug Madness, I gotta give her the title based solely on these two outfits.

  39. Victoria

Holy cheezeballs, that woman is genetically gifted. What, no Pacey?

  40. M.Amanda

Not wild about the first, but it did make me remember how absolutely beautiful she was in Troy. The second, love the color and totally Grace Kelly, and you can’t really go wrong channeling Grace Kelly.

I would happily default on my mortgage repayments for that heavenly mint green goddess gown and would probably never take it off

  42. Girlin
    0

WOW! I love the mint dress..it’s so floaty and light and she looks so serene and stunning in it. Fab! I can’t believe she wore the other dress and successfully got away with it! I’m hoping the lacing trend will not make a comeback though – I still have visions of the backfat oozing from my fellow teens at school discos etc in the early 00s..yuck!

I neer realized how much she looks like Natalie Portman in the face. I saw the lace up and thought Portman had gone blonde. PS Did they not have time for her hair? Her hair looks not good

  45. Miss Louise
    0

I can’t believe her hair in that trampoline dress photo (front-facing) hasn’t drawn any comment – I think it lets her down badly. Her hair is frequently a problem when she wears it down, to the point where I find myself wondering why no stylist has yet solved this problem for her. And while I can register her beauty in an objective sense, there’s something blank and flat about her expression that just leaves me a bit cold.

  46. Miss Louise

Ah, I see the post immediately before me has mentioned the hair – sorry, that slipped past me. Glad I’m not the only one who wonders about the hair.

The burgundy dress appears to be the same one Jessica Alba’s sporting on the cover of June’s Marie Claire.

  51. Mahastee
    0

Oh come on! A dress made out of a corset (for want of a better word) and my old high school netball skirt? Not even La Kruger can make that work.

The second dress is pretty divine, but I do wonder why they didn’t do a better job of the edging. It looks a little bunchy, and it’s supposed to be couture! My 30-year-old Elna could do a better job than that.

ALSO (last thing). Seeing all those stern/screaming paps with their intimidating cameras makes it easy to understand why some folks find it hard to muster a smile on the red carpet – it must DO things to a girl’s fight-or-flight response.

  52. Hayley

I like the aqua (not so much the gladiatrix themed mini) – and I like her, but I’m feeling a little concerned for how thin she’s looking! Eat a burger Diane! Eat some chocolate!
