Unfug It Up: Lynn Collins

unfug-it-up

So, Lynn Collins here has been popping up all over the place lately — often wearing a top hat, for some reason — and I swear to God, I couldn’t for the life of me remember what role she played in True Blood. (Of which I have only seen the first season thus far, due to a long and very boring story involving HBO, my OnDemand, Time Warner Cable and Netflix. I know. It’s annoying. And iTunes doesn’t have any of season two available yet. I JUST NEED THE FIRST SEVEN EPISODES, HBO. Deep breath.)

Anyhoodle, I eventually figured out that she played a coworker of Sookie Stackhouse’s down at Merlotte’s who meets with — shall we say, a less than ideal end? All I know is, if you look WAY better in the super short shorts and white tee shirt sported by the lady employees of Merlotte’s than you do in your civies, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG. When it comes right down to it, thought, I don’t really loathe this dress SPECIFICALLY. I think that it competes horribly with the backdrop here, which is not her fault, but mostly I think the styling on this is….problematic. Those shoes with that dress, and that lipstick, and that hair….honey, I just want to start over with you.

That’s where you come in, readers: put on your best Rachel Zoe and fix this mess. Nicely, of course.

If you HAVE to keep the dress, make the hair sleek and simple, and ditto for the shoes and makeup. But it’s much easier to swap out the dress for something that doesn’t scream THIS USED TO BE A CUSHION FROM Z-GALLERY.

And the toe of those shoes sucks.

Love the dress, hate the shoes. I think the background was an unfortunate choice for a photo-op.

Step away from the background. Now.

This can be saved sweetie! I’m thinking a wider black band to delete the awkward orange zigzig above the waist, a neater and snazzier up-do/loose fishtail plait over a shoulder/glossy formal ponytail/classic glamour curls?

Most importantly, if you don only one thing, bin the knee high gladiators. If you happem to have wobbly knees go for ballet flats, if not something wicked and high in patent black would be excellent- classic louboutins?

Look- now youre all cute and tribal! We knew you could do it.

No pockets, black kitten heels, neat hair. It would at least approach reasonable at that level.

Change the hair, lose the shoes! The pattern of the dress is pretty fugly too! So I agree with Lacey, change everything.

That dress is a nightmare. “Urban Cowboy” meet “Gladiator” at Wal Mart. The print overwhelms and hides her figure, the zipper placket gapes out under her arm, the waist is somewhere between high and low, it’s too big over-all. I actually find myself thinking “she would look better in her underwear.”

I don’t think this can be saved…maybe if she has her hair down in waves, changed her lipstick, got her hands out of her pockets, and lost the shoes? I’m not sure.

  12. Chelsea

I think the dress would be fine if she didn’t have her hands jammed so deep into the pockets. I am not 100% on board with the print, but like you said, that could be because it is competing with the zebra backdrop, which is terribly distracting.

As for the hair, it probably took her so damn long to buckle up those leg braces that she ran out of time and just left the house with it as is – so perhaps if she had chosen a simpler (i.e. not fugly) shoe, she would have had time to smooth out the frizz and do something cute with her hair.

Hike the bodice up maybe half and inch and fix the fit problem in that area, drop the waist to her actual waist, lose the pockets, and you have a cute summery dress. Next, swap out those hideous gladiator monstrosities for a strappy sandal with a high heel, tone down the lipstick several notches, and make the hair sleek and simple. The background is making me dizzy, but that’s not her fault.

  14. Eve Ryan

Put on some heels (preferably black). Hair should be up in a clean ponytail or loose and simple. And choose a lipstick color that doesn’t match EXACTLY with the shade of pink in the dress. Boom, done.

  15. Helen
    0

*waves hands* This is just… no, honey. No.

Screw the lipstick, screw the dress (and feck those pockets right in the EAR) and screw the shoes. Move away from the background, wipe the lipstick off and use a warmer shade, get a nice strapless dress in a warm metal hue and pair it with a pair of nice open-toe heels.

  16. Dorothy Heydt
    0

I’m inclined to agree: scrap it all and start over. Though I could live with the hair; I could even live with the shoes (on somebody else: I think they’re hideous but they’re obviously stylish, so what are you going to do?). But the dress needs to be replaced with a nice plain white kimono within which the lady can conceal herself while we take the dress off and disintegrate it (shouldn’t take long, it’s clearly already in an advanced stage of molecular dissolution) and replace it with something else. I’d pick a nice simple LBD and *one* piece of good jewelry, but that’s just me.

And THEN the background wouldn’t look quite as bad. You could at least see where it left off and the lady began.

  17. andrea

The big visual problem for me is that everything she’s wearing looks like a cylinder–the dress is very cylindrical, especially with the wide faux-Navajo striping, and her shoes are also cylinders. She has no visual curviness, at all. I realize she probably has no actual curviness, either, but that shouldn’t be emphasized. Truly, I’d either get rid of everything and start over, OR I’d take to a true, aggressive, F$#%#$-You level and put her in 10- or 13-hole Doc Martens, because then at least we knew she was being aggressively ugly on purpose. I can handle Ugly-On-Purpose, I just can’t handle when it’s an accident.

BTW, totally off-topic, the Fug Girls asked LiLo a few days back to do something new, and lo and behold, last night there she was the new Project Runway! Looking sober and offering some very incisive criticisms! So, Fug Girls, your wish is Harvey Weinstein’s demand.

Keep the dress. It is funky and cute.

The shoes have to go. Replace them with something simple and with a heel. Either white or black because a color would either be too matchy matchy or too much of a contrast.

The hair needs to look less like she drove to the show in a convertible. Simple, soft curls.

    Lipstick? Softer shade.

Hm. Maybe those doctors were right, and I *am* crazy, but I think this would look fine if she just stepped away from the backdrop. I like the whole conversation going on between her stripety shoes and her mesa-on-rumspringa dress.

Granted, had she not ridden her motorcycle to the event, her hair would be in better shape, but one of her girlfriends can fix that quickly in the bathroom.

  22. Elizabeth
    0

I almost feel like it might be all right in front of a different backdrop. It looks like the “In Style” logo is somehow continued across her boobs, and her shoes look ten times more heinous competing against the zebra stripes.

  23. Krys
    0

Good lord. The fact that she’s standing in front of zebra print wearing that bright ass print isn’t helping matters.

That said though, the dress isn’t bad. Different shoes and less severe hair and it would be kinda cute.

Tear those pockets off NOW and throw your shoes down a cliff. Wear your hair down or up into a pony tail but whatever you do, COMB IT so that it’s clean and sleek. Go to a tailor who will know what to do to make your dress fit.

This feels like one of those emergency moments, when all the stuff in my giant purse comes in handy.

Lose the Caesar sandals. Ballet flats or a little mule would be fine. The dress is unfortunate but if you’re stuck, then make the best of what you have.

A little, tiny bit of bronzer (in place of blush), a tinted lip gloss, and some mascara on the face. If you can’t brush your hair into a glossy mane, then throw it into a loose ponytail. And here, sweetheart, put this chunky black bracelet on.

Get your hands out of your pockets, stop sucking in your cheeks like that, stand up straight, and go. You were cute in Merchant of Venice.

  28. mara

I actually like the dress– it’s sort of spunky! But it needs to be pulled up a wee bit, and the hands need to come out of the pockets.

Next: wipe off the lipstick. Put on some nice flat sandals or understated/solid colored pumps. Do your best to de-frizz that hair, but summer is brutal, so I maybe it can’t be helped?

The absolute fastest fix would be a different background. Yikes to the zebra.

  29. tbruns

Ew-just ew..but I have to admit the background isn’t helping. Some kicky flats or a short heel may help but no

  30. Stefani
    0

I like the dress, I just wish it fit better around the bust. Maybe sans pushup bra? Perhaps a larger size? Or sans boob job?

For me, the sandals would work if they didn’t have a heel. This dress has casual written all over it…gladiator flats with a couple gold bangles, a nude lip. Add one of those french braids through the bang to the side.

  31. Aysha

Loose the orange part above the waistline, make the black middle part a little bit wider, put on some delicate black sandals and let your hair down. Straight and shiny would be nice.
A lipstickcolor a little less bold would be a good idea too, stand in front of a more furtunate background and for god’s sake: GET YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR POCKETS!
Better yet: loose the pockets alltogether!
Then at least I’d like it…

The skirt looks like a yard from a defunked fabric store.
Give it a proper waistline by cinching it to fit better and slightly longer skirt to lengthen the torso.
Stop pretending you’re a 4yr old’s birthday present and lose the bow and hike up the bustline.
Scrap the shoes and add a pair of strappy heels in black and for the love of Mischa, lose the pockets.
tone down the lipstick to a more neutral color and bun the hair. add some earrings and you are set.

  35. Paula

I think her hair and shoes would be okay if we tone down the lips and put her in a Roman soldier costume… or a short, goddess-y toga thing?

  36. Anonymous

Nothing works. Her unflattering dyed, dated hair, plastered on makeup.. looks every day of mid-fourty with a cheap old dress she made from left over uphostery remnant fabrics., from when she was living Arizona bar tending? No she is a singer.. Even the ugly boots are worn to keep her from tripping on the uneven sidewalks, as she refuses to wear contacts. We know Phoebe Price would pfft and laugh.

  37. luvthefugges
    0

I would make sure the bodice fit much better than it does. That would help alot. The gladiator shoes are too busy with the dress pattern so some smokin’ strappy sandals, maybe with an ankle strap, just one mind you. Remove hands from pockets please when photogs present. Add a bracelet, hair down or maybe a nicely styled side ponytail. Pale pink lipstick.

  38. diannavan

I can live with the dress (I don’t even hate the pockets), but those shoes have GOT TO GO. As does that lipstick.

    Okay… here’s what I’d do:
    1. Swap the shoes for some cute black sandals, maybe with an ankle strap if she feels the need to go a little S&M, but nothing drastic. Cute, classy, and SIMPLE, especially if we’re keeping the crazy dress print.
    2. Let her hair down … all the way down — waves, flat iron, whatever, I don’t care. This look screams “third day of finals” to me, and she needs to look neat, clean, and generally more like she made an effort. Or has a stylist. Or both.
    3. The makeup is another thing entirely. Clearly, whoever did this to her needs a tutorial on the concept of SHEER, because all that pancake makeup is making her look way older than I think she is, and who needs that?!So, give her a more natural finish to her foundation, go a little more summery bronzey-pink on the cheeks, and stick to a nice gloss (could be nude, could be raspberry, whatever as long as it’s sheer and maybe a little shimmery).
    4. The toenails need to be redone too. I know, this season, it’s all about dark polishes, but with this dress, I’d prefer a sheer pink (Essie’s Ballerina, maybe) or, if she must go matchy-matchy, OPI for Sephora makes a good candy pink (called Arm Candy) that might work here and not be so.. whatever black toenails are.

I think the dress, minus the lipstick and shoes are imminently saveable, but not the backdrop. In looking at the post for Ashley Simpson, I thought the zebra made her outfit look more interesting, or at least less bad. But now that I have seen the UNSPEAKABLE HORRORS that it can inflict upon an otherwise innocent pattern, In Style and all future backdrop manufactures should consider themselves warned.

p.s. is it clash day at GFYHQ? Lloyd Klein’s ensemble nearly brought on an attack of epilepsy too, the red and the orange and the gold and the peach. somebody put a spoon in my mouth.

p.p.s. “an egg cup for her soft boiled lady huevos”? hilarious. I’m putting that in my pocket for later.

  42. Suzanne

Just wanted to add, In Style should NEVER have had that backdrop for the arrivals carpet. My god it’s giving me a seizure.

  43. EG
    0

Ditch the bondage shoes. Even simple black pumps would do wonders.

The pockets are problematic because the pattern blends into the skirt of the dress and it makes her look like she has stubby hands. Solid pockets or, even better, no pockets, would help.

  44. gigi
    0

ah yes, Dawn the fang [and Jason Stackhouse] banger… so the ol’ gladiator-navajo move huh? With the backdrop & all I suspect it would be a kinda cool visual for an acid trip –for those who partake… I say ditch the whole thing [pockets?! and patch ones at that!] & go for a tweaked sparkly Merlotte’s uniform with pair of black Louboutins

[and wow... was she actually trying to match her lips to the hotpink part of that dress?? just wow....] either her stylist hates her, OR they’re in cahoots and they hate US and are trying to hypnotize us to makes us believe she’s an awesome actress

  45. lauren
    0

oh my gosh those shoes are horrendous! take them off now!

what’s with the pink fabric in the chest area- the seam is all weird. ooohhh it’s from the pattern. i get it. no i don’t. lose it- fill it in with the pattern (which, i surprisingly kind of dig).

yeah, no pockets. they also look hand-stitched and kind of hokey.

with black strappy shoes, could be cute.

hate that her lips are the EXACT same shade as the dress. eww. and her hair is a mess. side part, flat iron, worn down. cute.

also- unrelated: i LOVE these posts… they are so much fun!!

  47. billiejean

My first instinct is the same as commenters above: burn dress.
If you must keep the dress and pattern, you have to atleast get a better color scheme, preferably colors that are monochromatic with a low contrast. Add thick straps and heels.
I think LC is very pretty. She has elfish/Irish features that have been plastered in make-up. I’m not entirely sure this is a picture of her because the hair and make-up are so horrendous. Wash her head, put her hair up, and natural earth tones for the face.
Also, InStyle should be punished for using this backdrop. I feel sorry for the young starlet who chose to appear in a plaid dress.

  48. Jennifer
    0

Can we talk about how fug that animal-print red carpet backdrop is? They should have mentioned in the invitations to this event that it was going to be there so the attendees could coordinate their wardrobes appropriately.

Now that that’s out of the way: the print of her dress is horrible. There is NO saving it. The cut of the dress is cute. I would say maybe switch the dress to a deep turquoise or teal satin and nix the pockets.

I HATE HATE HATE those shoes. Something sandal-y, cute and strappy. Maybe silver with the teal dress.

Her hair is fug. I can’t picture her in True Blood, so I don’t know what would have looked better. Maybe down and softly wavy/curly (kind of 40s-ish).

Is this Bad Shoe Week? although, if they didn’t have the heinous zebra backdrop, these shoes wouldn’t look as bad as they do. She should specify in contracts that she’s notified when they change from red carpet to extra loud animal print in advance.
Stay out of wind tunnels on the way over. Wipe or kiss off the lipstick. I hate the color scheme on the dress, but really it would have been mostly ok without the horrible zebra-ness behind it.
I sound just like everyone else, but I’m posting anyway.

I think I might like these shoes on their own but paired with that dress they cut her legs off at a weird place. I don’t even think I mind the dress itself though the black band should be higher or lower. And her hair looks like she and her hubby were getting busy in the car, her hair started to come loose, and she couldn’t fix it back. At least I give her points for trying new things. I always enjoy seeing what she’ll wear.

So close, yet so far. Let’s start with a face washing, gloss on the lips, add light pink blush, wear the hair down (wavy would be nice), THROW AWAY GLADIATORS, add black pumps. Done and done!

K, Srsly?? We’re being asked to UN FUG this monstrosity?? That dress looks like a Navaho (sic?) threw up a gut full of fabric samples on her.

Matching lipstick to that fugly dress?? Why… for the love of Zoe, WHYYYY???

And don’t get me started on the shoes. I am a lover of fashion and I can embrace most things- hell, I owned and proudly sported Genie Pants the first time around (not proud but hey…), I have survived the Demin Invasion of the early 90s and even sported a romper suit back in the day… but enough… Why do girls think it’s a good idea to truss their hooves up in grannified leather torture devices?? IN SUMMER???!!! Can you SAY Mystic Tan? Because those babies don’t get along with an even tan line. From the freaky lumps sported by such celebs as Kiki and The Mighty Goop to the gladiator-esque whack-fest that was Rhianna and [fill-in-the-blank] Olsen this year… what is the world coming to when shoes are no longer desirable?

Designers, please get it together because without you, there will be nothing but Malamars and Lifetime to look forward to after a hard week’s work and we girls need cute shoes, dammit!! If this carries on, Fug will become Normal and then where will we be? When our favorite website changes its name to “Go Fashion Yourself” and we actually have to WORK at work and not endlessly click refresh in the hopes of seeing a new ghastly number on some self absorbed cretin-without-a-clue.

Fashion, come back… all is forgiven…

Now I am going to lay down because that dress gave me a migraine…

I hate to say this, but the dress might look better if there were more of it. Maybe it was a sleeveless sheath with a scoopy neckline it would look more kicky retro than bathing suit coverup.

Of course, the shoes must be burned. And I’m not sure what’s going on with her hair – is it frizzy, has she teased it, is it over-processed, or just dirty – whatever, it looks like a mohair hood.

  61. Anonymous

Let me say I’m not a fan of this dress, but it we’re going with it, sub those clashing gladiator things for a simple pair of classic, rounded-toe, lightly neutral-toned heel (no straps!!!), get some simple lips going (a beachy, rosy, un-sticky, light lip gloss look, perhaps) and unfussy, naturally wavy hair worn long onto the shoulders (what is that hairsprayed thing?) The dress is SO strong, that I feel only natural, easy, classically simple,non-competitive things could help the look.

  62. Liza

It’s all awful. Most of all the make-up and hair. And the shoes. The dress is also not doing itself any favors against that backdrop.

  63. Ducki
    0

I actually don’t dislike the dress necessarily. I wouldn’t wear it and she might be too old for it, but it’s hard to tell exactly how old she is. But since I’m assuming she’s not 16-22, I think it’s too young for her.

I don’t mind the bold make-up with the bold dress, but the lipstick is too matchy matchy. Otherwise, no problems here.

I think her messy hair is poorly done and unflattering with the busy dress and the bold make-up. I would keep the height, but put the rest of it in a sleek ponytail.

Ditch the shoes. Terrible, terrible. I would put her in something simple, clean, and preferably white to brighten up the outfit. It’s faltering too far to the dark side when it could really be light hearted and fun.

Man! That was satisfying. Back to being a lawyer. :(

  64. Paige
    0

Ugh, STUMPY! Different shoes, first and foremost. I’m not crazy about the dress, either, but it’s not as bad as the footwear, so it can stay. As for the roadkill on her head, would it kill her to run a comb through that mess? It would work wonders.

    1. Don’t ever match your lipstick to within 1 or 2 shades of your dress. That lipstick look pretty bad with the dress.

    2. If you are wearing busy patterns, don’t stand in front of something with just as busy a pattern.

What do people have against STRAPS on dresses? Straps are your friend – they keep everything where it’s supposed to be and reduce the horrible landslide effect we see on the lovely Ms. Collins here (did you know she’s married to the very hot Steven Strait, who was in that awful “Covenant” flick with the male cast of “Gossip Girl”?) Anyhoo, either go with a larger size that fits on top, or get this dress a halter or something to keep the bodice in place. Also, add about three inches to the hemline, for the love of God.

Ditch the Grecian-hooker shoes for a strappy black stiletto.

I dig the pink lipstick, but everyone knows you don’t match your makeup with your outfit. So a shade less Day-Glo.

Hair in a sleek side ponytail.

    Done.

Oh, hey, I actually HAD that dress in high school, only it was more brown and was really my bedspread (“mesa on rumspringa” indeed – CLASSIC). Yikes. But we can work with it.

Yank it up an inch or so, fix the bodice non-fit, take Maria’s suggestions for the dress, and we’re good to go.

It’s all so summery and cazh, the shoes, hair and makeup just don’t go, so they should….. GO! Make them all easy, breezy, lemon squeezy, fun, summer, casual. Maybe choose ONE citrusy color for shoes, purse, chunky bracelet or so and then relax.

As for the seizure inducing backdrop – let’s not even go there.

  69. vakadesign
    0

Hmmm, I’m very confused about her hair. I don’t know what’s going on with it, but I want it to stop doing whatever it’s doing.

Love, love, love the shoes….with something else. Honey, find thee something simpler with that dress, K?

The dress would be quite cool if the waist was a bit lower. Or the top was a bit higher. Or something. The dress just needs to work about three more inches in somewhere so that it looks like she’s not wearing a dress made for someone much shorter.

    From the top:
    1. Brush your hair and pull it back into a cute ponytail.
    2. Remove your lipstick and start over with something paler. You’ve got our attention already.
    3. Raise your bodice so your dress doesn’t appear to be slipping down. That look is tacky.
    4. Flatten the zipper cover. Where did you get this? Ross?
    5. Remove the fabric just above the black band and replace it with the black band to create an empire waist. It’s the best you can hope for at this point.
    6. Rip off the pockets.
    7. Send those shoes back to Payless, and get yourself a pair of strappy sandals or delicate mules in hot pink.
That will get you through the evening. When you get home, send it all away and don’t get dressed again without HELP.

I suppose it means that if I were a celebrity I’d be in the running for first round of Fug Madness at least once, I’m sure, but I think the real issue here is the backdrop they were forced to stand in front of.

I think that with this type of dress going slightly over the top with shoes/hair/makeup just makes it a fun statement that you don’t take yourself too seriously, and it’s not unflattering in a romper/jumpsuit sort of way.

Oh you girls are just great, I love reading your comments.
But the dress? is completely impossible. Lose also the gag-me shoes, the loud lips, the hair, the pockets, the zebra backdrop.
Slip her into a nice medium-weight silk dress made of sari material, in a muted grass green with tiny tiny gold accents woven in, give her some QUIET gold strappy sandals, some small perfect gold earrings with small peridots, and a tiny necklace to match, and a pinky-gold clutch.
Smooth, elegant hair. Some tinted lip gloss, some nice cheek color, and a warm bronze-cinnamon backdrop. Yyyyyes.

First, hands out of pockets. Second, cinch the belt a few notches. Third, let your hair loose. Fourth, lose the lipstick.

    Done.

The dress she can keep. Put her in heels or something instead of those… monstrosities. Get a shade of lipstick that isn’t exactly the same as the top of the dress. Finally, fix the hair. I don’t care how, just not that.

    the shoes are FUG. FUG.

The dress would be cute if it didn’t bunch oddly between the bosoms (“Bosoms, bosoms, bosoms. I’m just a bosomaholic.”). The lipstick is fine.
The hair is a bit wind tunnely but really it all comes back down to the FUG shoes.

Barefoot would be better than those puppies.

    WHOA! My EYES!

Personally, I would BURN all of this, to make sure it couldn’t hurt anyone else either.

However, if you really want to wear that crazy dress–(sorry, the shoes will still have to be torched)–just take off the black belt and pockets. Put on more casual, summery sandals. Add a necklace for visual interest, to make her look less bare on the chest, but take care that it’s in the same style as dress and doesn’t overpower. Put the hair back in its normal state, whatever that might be–this isn’t it. I could live with that arrangement. I don’t WANT it, but I could live with it on her.

Okay, that’s hideous… but um… where’s her husband? ‘Cause his hot ass could totally save that outfit… but distracting everyone.

I was thinking if the dress was restyled so it didn’t look like her breast were going to pop out of it, that would help. But then, I thought, yeah, but it would still be this really garish pink, orange, white, and black geometrical pseudo-African print that’s also too tight, too low, and too short. Short little summer sundresses are always fun, but they should look look easy. You know, summertime and the livin’ is easy? Her face is fine, her hair is her business, but why not, in the spirit of summer, a sweet, strappy medium heel, instead of the bondage shoes?

  82. Matt
    0

The dress is just too Adobe Indian in the 80s new wave trend. The shoes certainly don’t help, black strappy sandals would be an improvement, but the dress can’t be saved.

  83. RenaissanceGrrl
    0

I dig the dress and shoes, actually. Not sure if I like them together, but I can live with it. (My personal choice would have been a summery hot pink flat.) But she should blot her lipstick and add some gloss, and fix her hair–it looks like it just fell down and she hasn’t had a chance to fix it–she’s fishing in her pockets for a hairclip of some sort, right?

A necklace would have been nice, too.

OHH, the hair is supposed to be a sideways mullet–business on her right and party on her left. I get it! =D (Seriously. Look at just half of her face, either half…)

  84. Isara

Take it off, turn it into a nice Native rug and place it in front of the fire. Now get a bottle of champagne and wait for your honey to come home.

    Now, isn’t that better?

  85. Jackie
    0

The dress is cute, it works. Her perky boobs are scarily even.

She could tone down her makeup, a lighter lipstick, and let her hair down and curl it a little.

It’s those shoes! They ruin the entire ensemble.

    STATEMENT OF FACT:

Roman sandals/sandals from the land of ten thousands straps/sandles made by buckles a plenty…

DO NOT SUIT ANYONE. NOT EVEN MODELS.

  86. Gabriel

I would like to say that in fact this outfit does need some defugification. But what bothers me more then her outfit, is that you don’t seem to know who Lynn Collins is. Do a background looksy, google her… something! She, Lynn Collins, is not just the un-timely demised co-worker of Sookie Stackhouse, nor just the backstabbing lover of Wolverine, but Ms. Collins happens to be THE greatest American Shakespearean Actress of our time. Let’s not just unfug her outfit, but let’s unfug America’s lack of theatrical understanding.

Everyone who owns a pair of those high-top gladiators needs to ditch them!
The dress would be a darling beach cover-up, but nowhere else.
The hair, with a little tweaking, could be really amazing, if her look was Joan Crawford glam – but as is, it just looks sloppy & overdone (interesting combo!).
Sorry girl, this is a big fail. But, still you’re young and pretty!

I have a more puzzling question. Whose idea was it to place boldly patterned print wearing starlets in front of a Zebra striped background and “red” [sic] carpet??? I had a moment of vertigo here just trying to analyse both photos. The wardrobe, notwithstanding. Help.

  91. poltergasm

o so help me, that is disgraceful.

    i mean, it’s really hideous.

ditch the dress for something w/ style, not something that looks as if it cost six bucks off the kmart sales rack sometime in the past twenty years, yr guess is probably better than mine cos i would never have gone near it. neither current nor vintage–but somewhere in an indeterminate time zone in the Land of Absolutely Horrible.

    eeeew.

the shoes would be okay w/ a better dress, one of almost ANY sort. o okay–something less vibrantly patterned than anna wintour’s from “the sixteenth issue” party or less faux-four-month’s than the last “fix it” fashion hereupon.

the hair would be passable then too, particularly if the dress were vintage or faux-vintage. it’s faux vintage hair.

i like the lipstick color. it looks like lancome piha red [i think it's piha red, it came w/ the black lip gloss, i wear it all the time, sans the black lip gloss]. nice color.

    the dress cannot be saved.

“Take your hands out of your pockets!”

How many times did I hear *that* growing up? Let’s just say plenty.

But just recently, within the last few weeks or so, I’ve shouted that so many times. I swear there is this new trend afoot to cram your fists into your pockets. Which mostly wrecks the lines of whatever your wearing and makes you look insecure or petulant or insecure about your petulance or petulant about your insecurity.

If she didn’t have her hands stuffed in her pockets like a prelude to you discovering that those darling snowglobes of yours she was admiring have gone missing, I think the dress would work.

    Even with those shoes.

    Maybe.

not that i’m condoning this, but try this for all the season 2 episodes you missed: http://www.yidio.com/show/true-blood

  96. Gail

It looks like she has armpit fat and the dress isn’t high enough to hide it. Or maybe the cut of the dress is so bad that it’s giving her the appearance of armpit fat right there in front. Since she looks skinny everywhere else, I’m thinking it’s the fault of the dress.

Either way, armpit fat–or the appearance of such–is not flattering.

She might also want to think about using a loofah around the knee area. Those rusty patches aren’t flattering either.

On a positive note, she is one of the few I’ve seen that actually seems to know what to do with her feet in a pose. Her stance is graceful and pretty. In so many of the photos I see, the poor girl looks like she skipped the part of “being a lady” that addressed how to stand gracefully. Most look like a cow just stepped on their toes or they are about to run.

There is no unfugging to this outfit. The pattern on the dress looks like one of those knit poncho things one might buy at a gift shop in Cancun, and the shoes are straight up heinous.

I know there are already 97 comments, so I’m not adding anything new hair, but yes, I agree, LOSE THE SHOES AND RUN A COMB THROUGH YOUR HAIR. Seriously. The hair looks gross. And I’ve never been a fan of strappy shoes (and these go way beyong strappy). I think the dress would look okay as a swimsuit cover-up. Or not.

  99. Natalie DeJohn

this background is just so awful for photo ops!!! It hurts my eyes even to look at her in the first place! :( (

Otherwise, the dress would be totally okay on a different background and with some cute stilettos (perhaps, I’d go with magenta-colored non-strappy shoes, to match her dress). And she should take her hands out of the pockets, it looks so lame!

I like the dress, would never wear it myself, but if it’s her flavour she should not be denied. As with most people on the internet, I agree – lose those *&%$$ shoes. And make the hair very very simple. If you do that, you can even afford to keep the lipstick. voila.

  109. Rose
    0

I think the dress pattern is kind of awesomely outrageous, except for the smashed-boob element; they could have contoured that to her figure a little better right there. I like the pockets; they break up the major zig-zag pattern. She just needs to take her hands out of them! Hate the shoes, as said; get something non-strappy.

I’m not opposed to the blown-to-one-side hair; she just needs to brush it a little more. In theory, I’d like the simple elegance of it as a foil to the zany dress, but dude, BRUSH. IT. Makeup: wipe off some of the blush, get that lipstick color far, far away.

And the background: God. Chick could be wearing basic black and still look loud next to that hideous backdrop.

  110. Brian

Is it me, or does the zebra carpet/wainscoting have the potential to clash horribly with nearly anything put next to it?

Not that I’m defending the 2 pics presented, but isn’t it usually safe to assume that a carpet-type event would usually feature a solid color in order to avoid this type of clash?

I’m giving them a pass and recommending the set dresser take a remedial course or risk a demotion.

  111. MAmanda

It is all wrong. Just WRONG. Bad color, bad pattern, bad fit, horrible hairstyle, unflattering lipstick.

Give the shoes to Fergie, the only person I can think of who can do them justice. Burn the dress. Step into the shower for a nice scrubdown. Fire stylist. Or if she doesn’t have one, get one. Stat.

I can’t fix this look but here’s a quick tip — Amazon Video On Demand. I don’t know how if it works with a non-Tivo DVR, but at minimum you can watch the episodes on your computer. It’s saving my ass w/r/t Mad Men since my cable provider randomly and unfairly stopped carrying AMC last year…

  113. jannette

The lipstick and the pattern of the dress both look like something my grandmother would have worn in about 1990. Probably as patterned pants, with a fuschia polo shirt and a lavender bandanna tied into a headband.

Neither the lipstick nor the dress should be allowed out in public. I can’t un-fug them without turning it into a completely different outfit. Like, COMPLETELY different.

The shoes can maybe go out in public, but probably only on Fergie or Rihanna.

Can’t really tell much about the cut of the dress, I think you’re right about the background throwing things off – that being said, the fabric of the dress is simply nauseating. I’ve developed a slight migraine just from looking at it. Reminds me of some contemporary Native Americanish patterned curtains that you’d find in a moderately priced motel. The shoes should be burned.

  120. Cami
    0

    This is totally fixable.

First – Change the shoes for some sleek pumps
Second – wipe off that awwweful matching hot pink lipstick.
Third – no pockets on dresses . . . ever!!!
Fourth – Throw a few more bobby pins in that hair so it’s up instead of half down, half up, and all ratty.
Fifth, and possibly most important – FIT! Has no one in hollywood heard of a tailor? Dresses should not make thin starlets look like anything squarepants.

And done, see how easy it is?

  121. katie d

She needs a wider black waistband, to shut her mouth and get her hands out of the freaking pockets (don’t take it so literally dear), I would add opaque black tights with some classic black platform pumps, definitely classic Louboutin, to make it kind of mod. Top it with a black bangle-armband (mb not for her I just always wear mine), hair down without the disgusting comb-over-side-part, black eyeliner, nude lip. Not great but better.

Who the hell at InStyle chose a zebra backdrop? Gross.

I think the dress is great! The shoes are great. NOT together. The dress would be much better with silver or black strappy sandals (high heels, of course). I switched technicians for the reason that after a few years of Intense pulsed light, I believed the results are not worthwhile. Next I ordered the home laser hair. They will promise that after 2 years in the event that hair grows again, the treatments are zero cost. They have both laserlight as well as Intense pulsed light, but I want to stay with laser light now as Ipl didn’t appear to decrease the quantity of hair coming back.

Your simplest way for you to find laser light hair treatment locally typically is word of mouth and definitely not through an physician that is getting a piece of the pie. I used to visit a great Dr . to get laser treatments. I had blotchy hairy places and had been thru all of those other hair removal processes. I purchased the tria hair removal and have not been more pleased. Then finally I am hair free for the summer months. This will be a great year for me.

I have found quitting smoking is actually extremely difficult. I began tobacco when I was 14 years old. It was the dumbest mistake I’ve made. At present 30 years down the road and I have heart disease. I worked with each of the stopping tricks still absolutely nothing did the trick. My last hope is the electric cigarettes in the end.

I started off cigs when I was a kid. It ended up being the most severe mistake I’ve made. Right now I am 45 years old and I have coronary artery disease. While attempting to quit cigs, I discovered the electric cigarettes and will give it a try. Ideally, it’ll help me with this particular awful dependence.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

I am naturally of small build which is partly why I didn t take the full amount and also because it is so expensive. If I only weigh 140lbs should I take the full dosage or not
