Unfug It Up: Sandra Oh

unfug-it-up

All I know is that I took one look at this picture and decided I’m totally ‘shipping Sandra Oh and John Tenney.

How cute do they look together? I have to admit, I have a fondness for her (as well as for him, actually). I think it’s one of those things where, if you spend enough time with a person on TV, and you like the character they play, your fondness for their character transfers to the actor. You know. It’s the Chandler Bing syndrome. And I would actually like to see Chandler Bing and Cristina Yang get stuck in an elevator together. I fear that he would fall madly in love with her, and she would murder him.

I wish I could have accompanied the revelation of that photo with an audio file of Tyra Banks saying, “WAH WAAAAAAH.” (Except that would have been annoying, and maybe startling.) Like, I think Sandra is VERY pretty — and I covet her here-tamed awesome curly hair — but this thing is doing her no favors. It starts so well and then GOES SO WRONG.

So how to fix it? Me, I’d hem this mother up for starts, but I feel like there’s lots to do. How would you fix it, Fug Nation? Have at in the comments:

the shoes are the only thing that’s actually awful about this. black stilettos to keep the leg line long and she’s good to go.

I actually love it except for the tights. They’re so bad! Ok, and maybe different shoes would help too. But the top half looks fabulous!

Easy: hem it just a smidge, but the dress itself is great. Lose the black tights, give her more flattering/interesting shoes, and she’d be golden.

I think the shoes and tights kill it. I don’t mind the length so much. Some of those patent leather heels with the horns on the toes would be cool.

  5. Raygs

Lose the tights, lose the hoof shoes, add some amazing courts maybe in a bright colour. Finito.

  6. Rebecca

    1. Bring up the hem to above the knee.
    2. A sheerish grey tight instead of black.
    3. Different shoe, I think. It’s hard to tell what they really look like at this angle and with those opaque black tights.

If Chandler and Christina got married, she would be Christina Yang Bing.
    The dress if fine.
Lose the tights and the fugly shoes.

Hem it, bare legs and better shoes.

  9. Jodi

Hem it, ditch the tights, add strappy heels and BAM instant hotness!

  10. Lils

It’s the shoes. They stumpify, and to my knowledge she is not a terribly short actor. I would give her some pointy-toed pumps, get rid of the black tights, and hem the dress. Show off some leg! Love the cuff, btw.

  11. erin

Get rid of the shoes and the hose. I’m not a fan of opaque black hose…makes legs look shapeless and chunky, not slimming.

  12. S

Get rid of the tights and bracelet and change the shoe for heels, maybe a red to match the lipstick.

  13. Deanna

Ditch the tights and get different shoes. The tights are making her look short and stumpy, and on first glance I thought she was wearing tennis shoes!

  14. Carter @ Kitchenette

Get rid of the tights, get rid of the shoes, add bronzey-colored heels. Get rid of that hem, for pete’s sake… even just ONE inch would help. It looks like a droopy pair of boobs (especially bad with the droopiness going on NEAR her boobs.)

  15. Betsy

I’d definitely lose the velcro-ankle-wrap sneakers. (What ARE those shoes.)

  16. M.Amanda

I can’t really tell if I like the length because of the tights. I think maybe the length is fine. I know the tights are not. Also, the shoes must go, though they may just be fug by association being right next to the tights. Bare legs, better shoes, and she would look great.

  17. Rayna

True confession: I have an irrational love for Sandra, so I can’t be objective. That said, I would raise the hem AND necklines a couple of inches, make the tights sheer, if at all, and get better shoes.

I love the drapes and gathers of the dress, but think it would be more fab in a shinier, slightly stiffer fabric. Y’alls know what I mean. That kind of textured raw silk, maybe even a bit of color……………she’d look great in garnet.

I’d hem it, lose the tights, a nude stilleto… and I’d probably lose that cowel thing around her shoulders. I feel like it adds too much weight. Get rid of it, and have a plain scooping neckline with some nice jewelry.

  20. Peggy
    0

Ditch the shoes. The tights bring it down a bit, but with the right shoe you could overlook that. A little hem lift might help, but again, that might be the shoes talking. They stumpify her legs so much it’s hard to judge the hem.

  21. Kate
    0

Start by losing that rediculous gold cuff she has on. Hem that bad boy up approx 3 inches. Keep he tights black, but make them lighter and give them a slight texture and rock a major pair of heels and she’s good to go.

  22. Mary
    0

Shorten the sleeves, lose the tights, get better shoes. MAYbe add a shiny necklace,

Basically, though, the dress is great!

  23. Jennifer
    0

The dress is great! Love the bracelet. But those tights and shoes are not made of win.

  24. Jenn
    0

Hem, please. Also, 100% less tights would make this 67% better. And the shoes. No. Replace with black stilettos.

  25. Liz
    0

I love the dress, but I would bump up the hemline an inch or two. I wouldn’t even mind the tights if she was wearing heels, but those shoes are really ruining the whole look.

  26. Mara T.
    0

Definitely needs to be hemmed up. Then I’d either lose the tights and do a kind of funky heel (maybe a pop of red would be fun) or if she’s going to keep the tights I’d shorten the hem and do a slouchy boot and a high waist belt.

  27. Kate
    0

Man, this really isn’t hard at all (I thought she looked so great in that first pic, scroll down fug for sure):

    1) Lose the shoes, put on something less clunky and more sexy. This will immediately make the outfit 100% better.
    2) Lose the tights – another 100% better. It’s not THAT cold, and those are super opaque. With tights that opaque, the dress needs to be shorter and the shoes hotter = )
    3) That hem is wonky. Bring it up a bit and straighten it out.

Now the outfit is 300% better. Easy.

  28. shebrihart
    0

the dress and cuff are fine. lose the black tights and ankle-strangling shoes. maybe a nude or gold platform pump (to match the cuff)? and perchance bolder earrings?

  29. Meg
    0

That dress is amazing and looks likewise amazing on Ms. Sandra. All she needs to do is ditch the crazy shoes and tights (why were either an option? Why? Whyyyyyyyy?), throw on a pair of sexy black platform pumps and girlfriend’s good to go.

  30. Sara
    0

Hem that mother up yes.. also lose the tights and go with a nude peep toe heel, everything else is good.

  31. Virginia
    0

It’s totally fine if you just lose the tights!

  32. Minutiae

The dress is hot. Lose the tights and do some black or pewter pointy toed pumps, and she’s in business.

  33. Ej

I would just get rid of the dang tights.

  34. InfamousQBert
    0

hem it above the knee. lose the tights. the shoes might be fine as is, but it’s hard to tell what they actually look like. i’d probably go with some awesome color down there, though.

if she’s cold, go classic with some fierce black boots to cover the legs a little.

  35. holly
    0

the shoes might look better if the tights went. the tights need to go.

  36. Ej
    0

I add to my previous comment, I think the shoes would even be fine were it not for the tights.

  37. Caitlin
    0

What ARE those shoes? They look almost like those hiking boots that try to look like real shoes. Those shoes plus the tights kind of eat the outfit…lose them and it’s adorable.

  38. Eimear
    0

What are you on about she looks gorgeous, v. flattering dress!
There’s picky and then there’s nitpicky… so she’s wearing tights. It’s cold, I get that!

  39. Emma
    0

Hem it to just above the knee, lose the tights and get a great pump on her feet instead of….bandage booties? Those shoes….I just can’t.

  40. sandrawoah
    0

Definitely hem it to above the knee, give the skirt less rouching, ditch the tights, and put on some shoes with a little punch. And I’m not a huge fan of that dramatic a cowl, so maybe bring the neckline up a bit and use less fabric on the cowl.

  41. frommtlwithlove
    0

i would change the shoes (D’uh!) and I would ditch the leggings and wear… what is it called… pantyhose OR nothing. But great accessory btw.

  42. Alicia Collura
    0

Hem that baby a couple o’ inches. Trash the tights. Add a red pump. Love the bracelet, but maybe she could use a necklace instead of those dangly earrings.

  43. Kris
    0

I sprained my ankle recently and have to tape it to play sports. I’m pretty sure those straps on her shoes are the exact pattern of heel lock taping methods.

  44. Becca
    0

I’ve slap some sky high stilettos on her feet. I don’t even think you need to hem it up, or lose the tights. Just … 4inch heels.

  45. mv
    0

Oh Christina (sighed mer with tone) if only you had run your outfit past the fug girls before stepping out the door. Shorten the hem, lose the fugly shoes and even fuglier black tights. High heels in a vibrant colour and maybe some larger earrings. Christina, if you had married Burke, you wouldn’t be dressing this way….but no…you had to go and marry Owen and now look where its gotten you.

  46. Jill
    0

I don’t think you would need to hem it up if she went with a bare leg and peep toes. I covet her hair as well. I keep trying to Google “Christina Yang hair” in hopes that someone interviews her stylist for Grey’s so I can get some tips.

  47. Kate
    0

I’d hem the dress to an inch or two above the knee, lose the tights, and find a less casual looking pair of shoes. I’m undecided about the sleeves. I guess they can stay.

  48. Sandra
    0

Jesus GOD! What happened to her below the knees? Thick black tights are for school girls in plaid wool skirts. If they have to be black, they should at least be opaque. The shoes should be burnt and their ashes scattered at Payless. Are they multi-colored hoof boots, like the ones horses wear when they’ve injured a foot? Please tell me they aren’t open-toed with those tights. It burns, preciousssss.

No opinion either way on the bracelet, but I do think she needs some jewelry to fill in that neckline.

  49. witjunkie
    0

AUUUUGGHGH!!! I’m looking at the first pic saying why is this unfug it up? This is so cute. Then I realized I had to click for more – I literally howled at my screen. Tights – what – ankles -brown suede – everything’s been said but I really wish I’d stopped at the first photo.

  50. Miranda
    0

I COVET that dress and the bracelet and I think the grey actually works well on her. HATE the shoes, not crazy about the tights. The only unfug I would do would be bare legs with a strappy heel. Maaaaybe hem it up a tad but that’s not 100% necessary.

  51. Anika
    0

Hem it slightly, get rid of the tights, switch out the shoes, and we have a winner!

  52. Jen
    0

Oh, function over fashion in the cold weather! Just get rid of the shoes.

  53. Carlijn
    0

Different shoes, maybe a pair of sexy, black boots. Lose the earrings and add a necklace.

  54. sg

Love the dress. Just needs a hem and different shoes.

  55. TJF
    0

Leave the hemline, but lose the clunky dark hose and opt for a sheer black with those potentially funky shoes. the problem is that I can’t see if her shos go 2/3 the way up her legs, or stop at a funky/cool ankle length.

  56. cmst
    0

I actually really like the dress; it’s the tights and shoes that are throwing me off. A nice faux tanned leg and some standard pumps would go a long way!

  57. vandalfan
    0

A bit less cowl, some bigger earrings, and put nice tall boots on her feet, covering the thick tights. Then, no heming is necessary.

(My two cents, since I’ve stopped using pantyhose: Tights are thick and colored, like in dance class when you were 9 years old. Stockings are sheer, or opaque. Tights function to keep you warm, suitable for cold seasons. Stockings can be all kinds of flattering, any time of year.)

  58. fritanga

I loathe Sandra Oh (she’s the television equivalent of Anne Hathaway: eternally self-conscious AND false), but this dress is OK and I like the cuff. It’s the tights and terrible shoes which deep-six it. I know it’s cold in LA, but not indoors, and she should have braved the elements with bare legs and strappier heels. Would have looked entirely presentable then.

  59. Katharine

LOVE. IT. Love it all. This is the drapey grey dress of my dreams, except that I probably can’t afford it even if I found it (most drapey grey “dresses” are too damn short for me to wear to work, even with tights). Love the shoes too. Sandra Oh is dressed like me.

  60. Quentin
    0

A+ for accessories, hair and make-up. Christina Yang bugs the shit out of me and so does Sandra Oh. She’s rather average-looking but has a cute figure that the dress accentuates well…at least until you get to the knees. I agree with everyone else: raise the hem, ditch the shoes.

  61. Pellinore
    0

Lose the tights and get different shoes, and we’ve got a winner.

  62. Bella
    0

What is on her feet?!? The dress is great; I wouldn’t change a thing. Black heels would be good, without the heavy tights. Whatever happened to decent sheer stockings? They would surely look nicer.

  63. Evalyn
    0

For once, it’s not the hemline, it’s the tights. Loose the heavy legggings, get some strappy black or silver heels and she’s back to being beautiful AND stylish. I agree with Katharine, this is the gray drapey dress of my dreams. Or the title of the novel I will write someday.

  64. Alice
    0

Either get rid of the tights or get a more sheer pair, definitely some different shoes, and maybe hem it a tad or get rid of the sleeves

  65. David
    0

Her body rocks to that point that she doesn’t need to do anything. Now, if you say that backwards (or sideways, I’m not sure…), it comes out “She’d look hot wearing a potato sack. See?! She looks HOT in that grey potato sack.” Solution? Get a stylist. Sorry! Love hurts…

  66. dee
    0

LOVE the dress. She needs NO nylons and a slim heel.

  67. Lisa D
    0

I hate it all! But then I cannot STAND the sight of Sandra Oh. Cristina Yang is the most annoying character on television. So I think she needs to start all over. She can keep the tights, I guess.

  68. Michelle...

I’m feeling definitely the hem, and some festively colored shoes that don’t look as though they could alternatively just be part of her tights.

  69. Daniel

I’d like to see this ankle-length and paired with gray suede stiletto boots. HOTNESS.

  70. coexxi

The tights are awful, the rest is ok. Maybe other shoes (even ankle boots) and also another material for the dress.

  71. Kearstyn
    0

I’d raise the hem to her knee and put her in a pair of boots. That way she’d be warm without being stumpified.

  72. jhops

Lose the tights. Switch out the shoes for a nude, strappy sandal (with thinner straps!)

  73. MEL

Dress is great if you hem it just a bit. Sheerer but still dark hose (not tights) and better shows and we are golden.

  74. Kat
    0

the full picture popped up and all I thought was, ‘eeh-gads! the shoes!’. so, um, get rid of them? burn them?

the dress is amazing, but I agree, hem it up a wee bit and we’re in business. Hem, lose the tights, and kill the shoes. KILL.

  75. isi
    0

I’d hem the dress maybe an inch, it’s just a tad too long on her. And lose the shoes and tights, it looks a bit like she threw a dress on over her pjs. Some nice black heels would work wonderfully.

  76. Kyasarin
    0

I actually like the dress. Do away with the dark tights and give her a pair of cute shoes–maybe gold to match her bangle–and she looks perfect.

  77. Lynne
    0

Hem it to above the knee. Stop the draping below the waist and lose the tights.

  78. ATZ
    0

I like the dress a lot, but she needs to lose the tights and argyle socks.

  79. kayleigh83
    0

Hem it to just above knee length, lose the cuff, add a small and delicate necklace, NO TIGHTS.. better shoes (that don’t match the dress…. something neutral but fun, like a modern looking snake print?) and pretty much anything else for the hair. I like the neckline and I like the drapiness( drapyness? drapi-ness?? drapy-ness?!?) of the dress.

  80. Allie
    0

Hem it up, lose the tights, and voila! It’s fabulous. She’s so damn cute it makes me wanna go hug a unicorn…

  81. Lily1214

Get rid of those awful shoes and tights and hem the dress a little; that dress is so beautiful it should stand alone without all the gimmicky stuff she’s wearing. How about some black stiletto sandals with it??

  82. Amanda
    0

Yeah, hem that baby up by quite a bit, ditch the tights, and…yeah…not those shoes.

  83. Adriana
    0

Change the shoes for black knee-high boots (if it’s that cold)…. Or if it’s not so cold – some other shoes

  84. Angie
    0

The dress is cute. The shoes/tights combo is problematic. Tall black boots or platform stilletos would be cute and she could still be cozy and warm in her tights.

  85. eat my shorts
    0

    Hem it. Lose the shoes.

  86. Penelope
    0

The tights and the shoes need to go. They totally kill any hotness that this dress had, which would have been plenty without the fug shoes/tights combo. Also, love the big brass wrist cuff thing.

  87. amanda
    0

Either hem it, or make it much longer. Lose the tights and the shoes.

  88. Aristea

If the shoes were black, 3-4 inch stiletto boots and the cuff was pewter, we would all be cheering.

  89. daryl

    Bare legs and nude heels.

  90. Rebecca

make it floor length, dear god.

  91. Tricia
    0

Sweet merciful jesu that is one hell of a bad scroll down fug! Tights and shoes need to go, ASAP. Maybe make it monochromatic with a nightshade hose and then some suede heels. I don’t mind the hem, but yeah, it could come up a bit. It’s hard to figure out what needs fixing after a scare like that though. I need to lie down a minute to get over this horrifying shock.

  92. jo
    0

definitely needs to be shortened, and shoes have to be dumped, but i have to say that at least she’s dressed “wintery”. everyone else looks tanorexic…yes, yes I know that in LA the weather might still be pleasant, but most places have snow by now and it’s nice to be acknowledged!

  93. crookedE

I love this dress. I would just hem it up to just above the knee, ditch the tights, and switch the shoes for some gold sandals.

  94. meliblah

I absolutely love it except for the tights and shoes– (no tights, strappier shoes– unless the shoes ARE strappy, in which case I love them, too.)

  95. Arianna
    0

I think I agree with most here. Concensus: remove the tights and swap those heavy shoes for a pair that might offset her arm-cuff. Otherwise, it looks lovely and drapey and comfortable.

    LOVE the dress.

  96. Abbie

Lose the tights and the shoes. Hem the dress to just below her hand. Go bare legs with steve madden gold glittery pumps.

  97. kikilarue

It’s clear what has to be done here sartorially, but oh dear god do I love that photo of Sandra Oh and Jon Tenney. Excellent call. They look like they actually like each other, plus I think he thinks she smells good. Now I wish they really were a couple and in my mind it shall be so.

Love the dress, but I’d raise the hem 3 to 4 inches. No stockings (or nude) & sexy pumps with stiletto heels in black or bronze.
