“You know, no big.”

“Just hanging out. Wearing booties. Sporting another cute coat dress. Bouncy hair. Kissing babies. Business as usual. Just wait until you see what I’m going to wear to the Olympics. Two words: unitard.”

This is super cute. Makes me want to dredge my closet for a look-alike outfit tomorrow (I wish).

I hear that the British Olympic uniform this year is actually tweed unitards.

the website of the brand that makes this item lists it as a dress, not a coat.

What is this website?!? I want to know exactly how much I can’t afford it :(

If you ever want to know exactly what she’s wearing, I’d go to whatkatewore.com . They typically have an exhaustive summary of every piece. Also, this dress was on sale for somewhere around $200, down from $300ish. So, not unattainable, though it is of course now completely sold out.

I actually saw this dress pop up on eBay yesterday and it sold for 400 pounds!

It’s a Orla Kiely dress from last season, so it was on sale for a couple of hundred quid (I think, I went to do a price check but it’s been pulled from the website now, because it’s out of stock).

Man, she is going to KILL IT for the Olympics. Meaning that we will be able to enjoy Duchess Catherine clothes AND shirtlessness. Get excited ladies! [And men can too]

My goodness – I have those boots! I bought them at the weekend… I feel so smug now.

Those booties. I MUST HAVE THEM.

And on the whole: this getup is a little more youthful and playful than her other very lovely, but Very Royal And Appropriate outfits of late.

Available at Nordstrom. They’re the Aquitalia style ‘Royal.’

(Yes, I read the What Kate Wore blog.)

I have those boots too (actually, I’m such a dork, I bought two pairs and yes, I bought them because I saw Kate Middleton wearing them). The brown suede from Nordstrom and black patent ones from endless. Absolutely love them and love Kate’s style.

Normally I hate those shoe booties, bu they totally work with the opaque tights. Now I know.

Love it, want it. She looks great, as per usual. And as per usual, I am jealous. Le sigh!

Does she have really good taste? A really good stylist? A large budget doesn’t hurt…but she never seems to make a bad choice.

    • RD
      0

She makes safe choices, probably has a great tailor/seamstress for alterations to get a perfect fit, and then wears the shit out of whatever she puts on. That’s not a criticism. The ability to elevate whatever she wears is a skill I wish I possess. Having that body doesn’t hurt either. Have you seen pictures of regular people who wear the same dresses? It ain’t the dress, it’s the woman, and the fact that people like her.

      • Megan
        0

@RD: You put it exactly right. Kate is one of those rare people who can wear the proverbial flour sack and make it look smashing. On me, this dress would look weird and dumpy; on her, it looks amazing.

This is what I hate about the Kate effect. I wish I had the money to buy her clothes, but even if I did, I wouldn’t; outfits that look great on her would just hang on me.

Yeah, for a moment an image of Queen Elizabeth in this outfit flicked through my brain. A very brief moment.

Funny, that is a seriously ugly dress and yet she’s working it.

  15. AM

NOT a criticism, because look at her, but she has the hair I used to dream of having in middle school/high school. I was always growing my hair out in attempt to get all sort of cute dos: french braids with bows, head bands, updos, sleek ponys, really big hair (on purpose, not ’cause it’s humid). Eventually, I realized that I just don’t have that hair. But she does! I’d forever be putting my hair in some fancy do, just because I could.

I play a game with GFY now where I read the comments on anything Kate Middleton-related and see how long it takes before somebody comments about her weight.

For what it’s worth: I think she’s slim, but not unhealthily so. If she was unhealthy she wouldn’t be rocking that glossy hair and gorgeous skin. She looks like she’s perfectly healthy to me, so perhaps we should all stop being ‘body police’ about her.

Definitely needs a sandwich but man does she know how to dress for her size. Generally uber skinny celebs make me unable to appreciate the clothes for the emaciation (see Kiera Knightly, Angeline Jolie), but she pulls it off and manages to still look adorable and happy. Plus I can hardly blame her for being too thin with a life like hers. Can you imagine the pressure?

    • Heather
      0

Everyone in the world needs a sandwich, because sandwiches are god’s gift to us all and we should cherish them forever. But I think that should be the extent of our meaning behind that phrase here.

    • Lou UK
      0

Really Heather? Because my first thought was ‘girl, eat some chips – seriously’. Thighs should not look like that. It also makes her head and hands look too big. She should put 10 pounds on pronto.

I’m sorry, I love Kate and I normally love what she wears, but I just cannot sign off on the booties. They are heinous in every iteration. This particular look is slightly less offensive to the eyes than most, but still, just no.

  25. Rubee

Of course it is her prerrogative to wear whatever she wants under no obligation to please the crowd, but I less & less understand how GFY girls & others insist on praising her style. She looks ‘fine’ to me. Her fashion choices have been consistently reduced to the ‘perfectly fitted torso+ A line skirt+ loose hair’ combo. Can’t a princess wear shift dresses, full skirts or pants to public events? Thus said, I’m a fan of how she carries herself in a very elegant, same time natural way and I’m really glad her love story with William went the happy path .

Hey, if it ain’t broke, why fix it, right?

    • Heather

I think also it’s not so much that we are saying, “Look at her fabulous personal style,” so much as, “Damn, she looks good AGAIN.” It’s a subtle difference. We’re not calling her a fashion plate; we’re just saying she’s put-together and cute and always contextually appropriate.

Serious question: if you are a 48-year-old woman who is told she looks young for her age and usually wears jeans and Converse, are you too old for booties and tights? This is cute and seems easy — no fake tan, okay if your legs aren’t just shaved, no risk of flashing your privates, relatively comfortable footwear, warm — that I would like to try it!

I don’t think she looks too skinny – she just is tall, slim and fit. LOVE HER!!

Love the dress and the tights. She has HORRIBLE posture and it ruins the line of the dress. It also makes her seem unsure of herself; definitely not an energy she wants to project.

Um…I think Kate would know that unitard is one word, not two. ;-)
Love the boots. Bought some similar after she wore them last year.

Um – you know Team Britain is being fitted out by – er – Stella for adidas? Better than her ready to wear collections but still, you never know with her.

Kate adorable as usual. A joy to behold.

I just don’t get the regular fashion admiration for this woman. She looks fine. She is a PRINCESS, for gosh sakes. Isn’t she supposed to look fine? A few times she has looked wonderful but mostly she looks fine. I mean, in this photo, she has on a coat and short boots, and that look is fine. What are the standards for this, why is she always fab? What is the bottom line standard for princess wear?

I haven’t been able to think of her as “Kate Middleton” for quite some time, my brain cell having memorized Duchess Catherine instead and deleted the old entry.

Isn’t it … about time for the overall name change? :-) Just wondering, is all.

And yes: she’s mostly refreshingly CUTE.

This is probably sacrilege, but when I first looked at this in a thumbnail version I thought it was very strange to see Olivia Munn dressed so conservatively. Yes, I know the Duchess is not part Chinese like Olivia, but I think there was just a trick of angles or something in the brows and eyes that caught me off guard. At any rate, the Duchess looks appropriate and pulled together, just as royalty should. Now I will cower as everyone else tells me there is NO WAY Olivia Munn even comes close to looking like the Duchess even on the best of days.

It’s cute, but I sorta wish the waistline were just a wee bit lower.
