I believe Damian Lewis was wearing a studded tie and studded shoes, so I love him even more.

Bless you for sticking in the “I blame Spencer” joke. I think my husband still has that t-shirt.

      LOL

      EVERYTHING is Spencer’s fault!

I don’t know what I blame Spencer is from, and google isn’t helping. What is this please?

It’s from this website. It’s an old joke about The Hills.

Ahhh. That explains it; I never watched The Hills. Thanks!

          Jessica,

Can you define punk? I think I have the wrong idea of it if you think Wintour is punk. Or was that a joke I missed? Madonna I get. Miley. SJP not as much.

Awful photo of Kate Bosworth – ew!

  4. Joanne

What on earth has happened to Kate Bosworth? She looks liked Stoned Barbie! And I know we’re not supposed to comment on bodies, but she is veering into dangerously thin territory.

  5. Kat

I’m still not quite over Wintour’s interview where she claimed that she had asked the curator for advice on punk and after hearing that pink was the color of punk she opted for that dress. A) You’re freakin’ Anna Wintour – you’re supposed to know what punk is all about; also you’ve got Vivienne Westwood, the folks at Alexander McQueen and JP Gaultier on speed-dial – or your PA has. B) Pink might be punk, but the pattern from a 70′s tea towel most definetely isn’t.

    • MKKS
      +6

I AM SO CONFUSED by Anna’s decision making here.

      • Michelle
        +5

I am genuinely shocked by how effing WRONG so many of these fashion choices were. Is punk that hard? All you have to do is rip up a t-shirt, add some safety pins and (fake) blood, throw on leather pants, and BOOM you’re done. What’s up with the floral ball gowns?

    • LibraryChick
      0

I have to wonder if Wintour went out of her way to be ironic. The dress she chose looked like what LDS/Mormon moms in my town wear in the summer. That is, it looks like she took a sleeveless floral dress and then layers it over a white short-sleeved shirt underneath for modesty (since we can’t have bare shoulders). It’s not a bad look for the group I normally see wearing it, but it’s very much the opposite of punk.

    Maggie Q looks gorgeous.

    • Helen
      +2

She does. It’s a little big on her, but it’s so great, and so great for her specifically, it doesn’t even matter. Love the gently punky touch of the clashing makeup.

Thurman may look conventionally stunning, but… it’s STUNNING.

    No argument from me.

    • kSto
      +1

Yeah, that little Marc Antony doll hanging from her hip adds the punk edge the dress needed.

    • Deborah Stultz

      Definitely a drop-dead fabulous color.

    • Carol

Agree … Uma out-stuns everybody else, in my view … how many people could carry that dress … it’s beyond fabulous.

Is Julianna Hough 3 feet tall? Because I’ve seen some stumpifying dresses in my time on this site, but never anything that so literally read “Munchkin.” WEIRD.

    • hb

Yeah, there should be a dictionary for all the GFY made up words, and Julianne’s pic should be under the stumpifying definition

It’s ok! I just felt she really brought the drama (despite not being punk), unlike so many this time round.

so disappointed that no one really dressed the theme. except for sort of SJP, but even that felt watered down.

    • Carol
      +3

Agree … the punk theme was a failure.

      • Lucille Austero
        +3

Love the socialite! Assuming socialite = money, there’s someone who knows what to do with her wardrobe allowance.

  12. Edith
    +15

Julianna Moore WHAT. The vest bit on her dress is so unflattering, the hair is neither punk nor attractive, and all of it makes me tired. But not too tired to get over being mad at AW misreading “punk” to mean … whatever the hell you call what she’s wearing. She absolved everyone else ignoring the theme by dressing so anti-punk.

We need a Fug Nation ball, where we all ACTUALLY DRESS TO THE MET BALL THEME every year.

  13. Tassie
    +3

Sad no one really went all out punk.- Gloriously high manic-paniced mo/faux-hawk; ripped apart chanel gown safety pinned to a shredded roberto cavalli; an actual dog collar Debbie Harry’s diamond crusted chain links, gold safety pins by Tiffany for earings. Topped (or bottomed) off with steel toed jack boots.

    • Tassie
      +13

Favorite Couture Punk– Hailee Stanfield. Punk leather & safety pins but white, ladylike & beautiful.

The fact that so many people missed the mark at this event is troubling. It either means that their stylists have no clue who Vivienne Westwood is, or they don’t know what punk was, or they chose to deliberately ignore the whole theme of the ball, or that punk as a fashion inspiration is dead.

I like to think that the fact that Michelle Lesniak Franklin just won Project Runway dispels this last thought.

  15. mary lou bethune
    +2

Speaking of Debbie Harry, where was she and why wasn’t she the mascot, queen of the ball or brought in on a throne? Uma and Kate Bosworth and EMily R and Julianne ( still don’t know who she is)are just desperate … and to quote you all- too much of a muchness, which isn’t punk..

    • Kris
      0

Well, if Lady Bobbington was going to do that for Debbie Harry, Vivienne Westwood would have needed to parachute into the Met Ball with James Bond. Instead, they gave Westwood like 10 seconds and then moved on with the boring.

    • hfree
      0

Debbie was there. She was wearing Tommy Hilfiger (who actually started his career selling “punk” clothes, so it’s not that weird).

I really, really, REALLY hate that there are visible seams on the sheer parts of Maggie Q’s dress. I mean, they couldn’t figure out how to make a diamond of fabric without a seam down the middle? It looks so cheap. I hate sheer.

    • Elle
      +4

I took the seam to be part of the punk element. Whatever the case I thought she looked dynamite!

I’m going to date myself, but Julianne looks like Dorf’s daughter at goth prom.

  19. Mouse
    +22

Julie Macklowe is proof that you can go punk and still wear a gown and look great!

I feel like too many celebs were afraid of looking “ugly” and chickened out thematically.

    How boring. Why bother?

  20.  Janice

Those colours are wonderful on Mindy, but I’d like the gown better if it were more…something. More structured? As is, it’s blah senior prom.

Damian Lewis looks like he’s having a good time in his spiky slippers.

Whomever was in charge of Keibler’s hair failed…massively.

    • Carol

Keibler’s whole look failed massively … I don’t agree that she looks cute … she looks like a waitress on Ten Forward (Star Trek) …

I don’t want to turn into a 13 year-old girl here but am I the only one still shipping Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak? I know in that in real life they’re just friends but in the fictional world in my head, they are MFEO.

As to the topic, this slide show just reminded me how underwhelmed by this event. Apart from a few shining moments, everything was a big snoozefest.

    • HKS
      +9

You are NOT the only one real-life “shipping” them. I just had a conversation about them with my friend today. And they were not ALWAYS just friends. They did date. AND they have cute twitter banter, where she once told him that he was her “soup snake.” (From The Office, Michael’s misreading of soulmate). Oh my god, for real, who is the 13-yr old girl now?

As for the clothes, I definitely put the blame on Anna Wintour for the lack of real punk. She created the theme, and then herself dressed SO FAR from it – I feel that sets the tone for the entire event, right?

I love Uma’s, Minka’s & Amber’s outfits… Not “Punk”, but BEAUTIFUL and so GLAMOROUS! Also like Kate Bosworth’s look!

    • Kat

But Uma was wearing some jewellery with F**** Off embossed – which totes makes it punk *sigh*

    • Elizabeth Rafferty
      0

Are Minka and Amber wearing basically the same gown in different colorways? That’s what it seems like.
And isn’t Naomie Harris’ dress the same as Zoe Saldana’s awards season dress from two years ago, with the ombre-ruffled train?

  25. Fran

Even though I normally do not really like Kate B – I have to say I really like her dress. And she looks amazing in something other than nudish or black/white stuff!!

Alicia Keys – you are such a delight

I am totally fine if people didn’t go “punk.” You are viewing an exhibit; you don’t have to match it. There were some fun winks and nods to punk (Hailee Steinfeld, Carey Mulligan come to mind) and there are always people who have fun with their clothes and will wear something out there (SJP, Madonna), but I don’t denigrate anyone who wears what they would wear to a ball.

This really has nothing to do with this post, but…that Cameron Diaz birthday fugstory was awesome!

Man, she’s had some really fantastic ( i can’t believe I forgot about the fuschia/turquoise outfit! And that Vanity Fair orange!) and really awful looks.

After seeing it all, I think Christina Ricci wins. She did a nod to punk but still looked pretty. Win.

Not sure if it’s the gray dress, the severe hair or the make-up – but Julianna Hough looks so old and wizened. SHE IS TWENTY FOUR YEARS OLD!!!!
A punk event would’ve been a great time for her to embrace hot colors and crazy hair.

Hot pink socialite for the win!

And who was the guy standing behind her talking to Hailey Steinfeld? Crazy suit.

The thing is, the name of the exhibit is “Punk: From Chaos to Couture” so I don’t have a problem with ladies who wore dresses that were pretty, but you could see the punk influence via leather, studs, spikes, safety pins, and shredding. It’s just so many just wimped out and wore regular conventionally pretty dresses. I didn’t expect too much in the way of totally full on punk (although I was HOPING), but the severe lack of Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen just speaks volumes.

I am now finding it hard to dis anyone at the Met Gala for not sticking to the theme, when AW herself couldn’t be bothered.

Also, Mindy Kaling looks fan-freaking-tastic. Love the turquoise clutch with the VIOLET gown.
