The Fugt

I completely sympathize with this outfit’s existence:

It is awful — like the mutant offspring of a Juicy Couture sweatsuit and a genie — but I suspect, as she gets more famous and attends more events, she’s beginning to feel like there are only about three different options available to her. Which is INSANE to me. I said it about Christina Hendricks and I’ll say it again: Anyone who takes the time and effort to channel creativity into giving these women a KNOCKOUT red carpet moment would be utterly celebrated. But nobody does. And that’s the worst because it leaves Melissa, who is sunny and funny and bright and talented, with having to make tragic choices like this. She is always a toxic melange of bad cuts and awful fabrics, and at the very least, somebody ought to be able to fix ONE of those two things, but why not both? Please give Sookie St. James a hand.

She needs to call up Octavia Spencer. That’s a bigger gal who is getting it DONE.

    • Lizzy

      My thoughts exactly!
Octavia knows how to look find dresses that are very flattering to her figure.

      • kpietri

That’s what I thought too!! Octavia is always wearing Tadashi Sojhi (sp?) and knocking it out of the park.

    • Miranda

Possibly Queen Latifah, too? I’m trying to think of who has the same sort of shape she does–I feel like OS is a little more petite and hourglassy, and QL is more sort of statuesque…Mo’Nique?

      • Erin

*I* am the same shape as M McCarthy and I can buy cute dresses from Dress Barn and Lane Bryant that flatter my figure. No, it’s not red carpet, but if it can be done for the (very dense) masses, it can be done at a higher level.

    • Beth

YES to OS! Now that you mention it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her wear even so much as a miss. She (or her stylist?) consistently gets great outfits in spectacular colors that are flattering and stylish.

    • gayle

I remember reading that she is friends with Octavia Spencer so that this conversation has not happened yet is beyond me but it needs to ASAP!

    •  HelenBackAgain

Also, she could talk to Gabourey Sidibe. Remember this?

About which she said, memorably: “If fashion was porn, this dress would be the money shot.” Heh.

    • TonyG

I know what you’re trying to say, but Octavia Spencer is a very different shape from Melissa. Perhaps Gabby Sidibe would be a better comparison. Gabby embraces color and seemingly celebrates her figure whenever she is on the red carpet.

      • Guerra

Just because they are both bigger then the average celebrity, doesn’t mean they have the same body! Main difference, Octavia still has an hour glass shape. Mellisa is big in the middle with smaller legs & arms. That’s a Lot harder to dress but possible! she should look to Rebel Wilson

    • ChaChaHeels

Octavia’s found the one designer who can do couture design for women who aren’t size zero and as tall as a house. And I don’t think she’s going to let him go!

Poor Melissa looks like she’s been forced into the same polyester caftan wear all of us big girls get when we go looking for clothes. Cheap plastic fabrics and little-talent-as-possible designs.

  2. Anna Svahn

I am a large woman with a tummy and I have lots of lovely outfits. Empire waist, fitted waist, something that given a little shape would be welcome here. And texture! Don’t just ruche.

    • ChaChaHeels

It’s possible. I’ve looked for more than 20 years and this year, I finally found a dress with an empire waist and a princess line in the skirt. A simple, classic design but let me tell you, it is RARE. Naturally, it has no sleeves at all (a big peeve of mine, too) but I can’t complain about the fact that the cut is actually designed to flatter the female body, and it’s the first I’ve seen of it’s kind in decades.

  3. Deborah Stultz

    AND! She needs a bracelet.

  4. Stefanie

On the plus side: Her head looks great.

    • ringthing

Yes! Her hair and makeup are very flattering and so is the navy – love a brunette in navy – but man, harem pants? Cheap, grabby fabric and cut? She is worthy of so much more.

      • Kristin

This outfit might work if it was a beautiful, non-clingy silk, with a flattering V neck rather than a cheap-looking zipper. The harem pants and shoes aren’t completely terrible. And her face and hair are gorgeous.

  5. Sandra

This is a crime against both womankind and the color navy blue.

  6. Berry

Speaking of Sookie St. James, she could just give whoever stylist worked for that show a call. Because if memory servers, she was always beautifully turned out and wore cute clothes in Stars Hollow. There’s no need for this, Melissa!

    • Tess

Melissa-as-Sookie rocked generally-unflattering chef’s coats harder than anyone else in the history of time, so imagine what she could do with some gorgeous, well-made dresses!!

  7. Misti Nicole Harper

What makes this outfit even more terrible to me is that wardrobe for Identity Theft dressed her SO WELL for the “transformation” dinner scene. This…whatever that thing is…is sheer laziness.

  8. Eliza Bennett

At least her shoes are cute. I love her. I want the best for her.

  9. filmcricket

Isn’t she doing this to herself? I thought she worked with a designer on many of her red carpet get-ups.

As a woman of size myself I completely sympathize with the problem of finding cool things to wear, and it must be a million times worse being surrounded constantly with size 0 starlets. But there’s a point at which one has to recognize that some people just have lousy taste. La Hendricks refuses (allegedly) to work with a stylist and look where that gets her most of the time; Melissa here deliberately foists these outfits on herself. One starts to lose sympathy after a while.

  10. maryse

the other day she was on kelly and michael wearing a red/black print maxi dress that looked really good on her. so it can be done.

  11. dee

There is at least 1 website that does gorgeous plus size evening wear for very little money for a movie star! I wish she would just order the entire Igigi catalogue. I hate to think how much this thing cost.

  12. eandh

Igigi would do lovely things for her – eShakti for pete’s sake where she could get things custom fitted for relatively cheap. To say nothing of Tadashi Shoji, Adriana Papell, Marina Rinaldi. 5 minutes and a couple of hundred bucks for Nordstrom online and I could do better than this for her. That blue lace which looked so great on Octavia Spencer — is available via Nordstroms.

  13. themis

I don’t think this is bad-! It looks comfortable and elegant, to me, and a great color for her.

Now, if it were in an aqua palm print, it would be too Blanche Devereaux. This way is nice.

  14.  HelenBackAgain

It isn’t THAT bad. I would not object to this outfit for an al fresco lunch with friends.

However, for an Event at which one will be Photographed… oh, sweetie, get something tailored that showcases that beautiful face.

  15. Claire1

Whenever I see her on an interview my first thought is “OK…. I so want to be her neighbor!”
    She’s awesome….but
Well, on a blog that deals with fashion NAMEs…..I may get a lot of flack for this….
She needs to give the middle finger to “Designers” and start buying her clothes * gasp * off the rack. Buy them off the rack and then find a good tailor.
When I was in the plus size range there was no shortage of online places for my to find great looking clothes that may or may not have needed a little bit of alteration.
This color is beautiful on her…but whatever arsehat that designed this needs to be thwapped upside the head.
    Clingy fabric with draping? REALLY?????

    • Aphy

No middle finger from me. I agree with everything you said. There is no reason why this beautiful and talented woman should have to dress this way. If the designers refuse to do something flattering, then she should look elsewhere (anywhere).

    • Vandalfan

“Clingy fabric with draping! REALLY???? deserves repeating. So many times good fabric is abused.

    • Maria

I just saw on The Militant Baker fashion blog that Modcloth is working to increase their size range and make sure the clothes fit properly instead of just sizing them up without tweaking the proportions.

A cute little Modcloth dress may not be read carpet, but it would look much better than the Workout Genie thing she has going on there.

      • Claire1

I think anything can be red carpet as long as it fits well, is appropriately accessorized and on someone who is ready to say “Yeah, it’s not worth a dozen thousand dollars…but I look like a million”.
Besides, spend that cash on SHOES!!!

  16. Bella

An empire waist maxi dress could be her friend. What she is wearing is not.

  17. Margaret

Agree to all, I just wanted to say Sooooookie!!!! Thanks for that reference. I love her

  18. Amberoni13

Another gal she could take pointers from is Amber Riley. Yes, Riley is more hourglass, but come on. Switch this with almost every single thing Riley has ever worn and it would be better. Those saying it’s not that bad are like those who would say of the woman wearing sweats in WalMart – hey, at least her bikini areas are covered. Could be worse =/= OK.

  19. Eirwen

The colour is good and a waist definining navy tunic with flattering pants would be good. Dawn French style. This top doesn’t fit.

    •  HelenBackAgain

Dawn French is another person McCarthy might consult about fashion. She does miss once in a while, and usually spectacularly, but for the most part she knows how to dress all her fluctuating shapes.

Also, I think they would have a FABULOUS time together anyway! ;-)

  20. Guerra

I thought she made a lot of her clothes?

The colour is beautiful & her face looks very pretty but the clingy fabric is a no.

I would love to see her in a black maxi, beautiful tailored blazer & a banging bright necklace.

  21. fritanga

Yeah, Spencer and Queen Latifah have different body shapes than McCarthy, but SOMEONE has taken each in hand and made them look fabulous. Same with Adele, even if she is a little less banging in her choices as these two ladies.

McCarthy is even worse than Lena Dunham and Mindy Kaling, two round-figured women who are determined to wear runway clothes which were designed for 6 foot tall women who weigh 97 pounds. They want to wear what they want and what they like, which is admirable in theory but often unfortunate in execution. McCarthy, however, doesn’t even try. She just puts on the worst, most unflattering shmattas and lets the devil take the hindmost. So sad, because she is lovely.

    • Faye

ITA with this comment. I love Melissa McCarthy, but I feel it’s almost as if she gets a pass for her bad dress sense because of her weight. I see plenty of heavy women regularly who are dressed very nicely, and they don’t have access to all of her resources, presumably. I’m sorry to say, but I think she just has very bad taste in clothes.

Lena Dunham and Mindy Kaling are perfect examples of not bad taste, but wearing the wrong things for their bodies. Mindy especially makes me sad. I love her and her show and her personality, and she seems like she’d be great fun in real life, but man, that girl needs someone to take her aside gently and let her know that she doesn’t need to (and shouldn’t) wear the same things as Karlie Kloss and her ilk.

  22. Lily1214

I love this woman; I don’t care what she wears.

  23. Sajorina

I love you Sookie, but NO!

  24. jinny

When I see her at these events, I think there are two possibilities:
    1. She doesn’t give a single eff, which is absolutely fine
    2. She does give an eff but she thinks this is about the best she can hope to look. That would be too bad because this is horrendous and she can look much better. If a paid stylist picked this out, that person is either terrible at their job or despise Melissa McCarthy (or more likely – is used to dressing size 2′s and might do that well, but doesn’t have a clue what to do with MM)

As a grown adult person though, MM has to take accountability for willingly putting on those pants and wearing them in public.

  25. Dru

Here, here! Being a larger woman myself, I’m constantly amazed at what stores dictate as “fashion” for us. I’m not young, and I’m not old, but my choices are either hoochie-mamma styles, or grandma-on-a-cruise styles. Why is it so hard for designers to extend their lines by extending their sizes? And another thing (while I’m ranting)… someone needs to redesign nursing scrubs for plus-sized women… something with a shape, in a softer material, with 3/4 length sleeves, longer torsos, and pants in several inseam lengths that don’t show off the butt crack when you bend over! Seriously! They’d make a FORTUNE!

    • ChaChaHeels

Once upon a time, and it wasn’t so long ago, designers did do whole ranges of clothing in plus sizes. They were the same clothes as they ones they did in ready to wear, with modifications for proportion. You could find any number of designer lines at some of the best high end plus size boutiques. Of course, those lines have disappeared now. But not completely. If you’ve got oodles of cash to spend on clothes, you can look great in beautiful designs and great fabrics.

  26. Halley

It makes me crazy because I LOVE her! Didnt she go to college for fashion design? The few times I have seen her in stuff she’s designed, its just… bad. And she deserves so much better, because she is awesome sauce. Arent she and Octavia Spencer really good friends? Octavia needs to give Melissa the hookup, because she always looks fab!

slim suits. Daniel Craig wardrobe in is impeccably tailored and quite tight. Unlike the James Bonds that came before him who all liked the traditional looser, longer cut of a Savile Rowstyle suit, Craig, whose wardrobe is created mostly by Tom Ford, takes his suits Euro style with tapered legs and shorter rises. There no question Craig super spy Bond will go down in history as one of the best, but it fair to ask if he could pull off those impressive chases in clothes that tight. kaufen birkenstock
