The Fehs and Huhs of the SyFy Upfronts

fug-or-fab

I continue to reject the fact that the SciFi Channel changed its name to SyFy. I KNOW it happened a long time ago, but it continues to be pure ridiculousness. Although now I get to refer to it as “Siffy,” which is fun. Not as fun as the RhinoRaffe –or whatever marauding animal mash-up they plan to unleash upon us next, ideally in a movie starring, like, Dustin Diamond and Judd Nelson as feuding zoologists — but still.

I vaguely remember that Dracula Businessman series, but I was more into the rehash of “Dark Shadows” with Joanna Going and Ben Cross. That was so much more fun.

Oh man, my favorite episode of One Tree Hill ever is the one where Dan realizes that girl told Lucas about Dan shooting Keith, and Dan goes to her house with a paper bag they make you believe is holding a gun. Instead? It’s a TEDDY BEAR he got at the GUN STORE. And Dan HANDS IT TO HER. (Keep in mind, Dan was tortured by someone spray painting “murderer” all over his house and thinking it was Keith’s ghost.) It’s the best worst thing that ever happened on that show.

I, too, miss One Tree Hill.

I firmly believe it’s impossible to pick a best worst moment from OTH, but the one that sucked me in was when Psycho Derek (and poor Matt Barr will always be Psycho Derek to me) was attacking Lucas and Peyton. and Real Derek showed up.

        Psycho Derek: “Who are you?”
Real Derek: “I’m her brother, bitch!” *punch*

After that, I was hooked and started watching back episodes in addition to the new. God, I miss that show.

The Westmore lady hosts FaceOff because her dad is a famous and very accomplished special effects artist. (Clearly I love Faceoff!) I had no idea she was on Passions! Of course, why would I? Ive never seen Passions.

I watched Passions and had no idea why she was hosting FaceOff until I read about just how famous her father is. Impressive family.

Allison Scagliotti’s hair looked much better bob-length. This style isn’t working for me. Love her though.

I watch “Face Off” as well and had no idea McKenzie was an actress! She’s very good as a host!

I love Face Off too! One of the most underrated reality shows out there, with talented competitors, and some very accomplished judges, a few of whom have won Oscars for Special Effects. I wish more people watched this show – even my 15 year old loves it.

We love FaceOff! The artistis are AMAZING, and there is much more focus on the process than the drama (though there is a little bit of drama here and there). The judges are awesome and McKenzie is great as the host. Her dad is just the coolest, nicest guy ever.

Blond Girl’s dress is like a walking drunk test. If you can look at it for 60 seconds without tossing your cookies you’re OK to drive.

The top of Mia Kirshner’s dress doesn’t fit her at all and unless she is with child the style makes no sense to me. I would watch that old Dracula TV show if it was on Netflix streaming though. It sounds hilarious.

“Hot & Steamy Schnitzel Delivery Boy” is basically the best acting credit ever.

I expected a photo of Eric Balfour after slide #6, seeing as he stars in SyFy’s Haven. Slideshow fail! :o )

A little Emily Rose and Nathan Wuornos rarely go amiss either. Such an unusual-looking and attractive cast on that show!

I love Haven. I missed the entire last season due to my anger at SyFy for canceling Eureka (I’m still not over it).

        • Helen
          0

IMO you’re not missing all that much. It isn’t a big story, maybe three seasons’ worth, and they’re inserting more and more plot points to stretch it out because it’s doing well (for SyFy) in ratings. This is never a good story-making technique. I’ll still watch, but at this point it’s really only because I like the cast.

And I miss Eureka, too. But hey, we’ll always have that FANTASTIC Christmas episode with all the different animation styles! That was brilliant.

OMG I am so glad I’m not the only one who misses Eureka! I have sworn off all SyFy programming for good since they canceled Stargate Atlantis, Sanctuary AND Eureka within a few years of each other. But yes, that Christmas episode of Eureka was totally amazing!

              0

Yep, I still have that Christmas episode on my DVR. Is that a snow….ninja? It’s a sninja!

Yes to Eureka and Haven! The Christmas episode was excellent!
Also, wish the Haven cast were at that party – would like to see how they dress outside of “Maine casual.”

The Westmores are a Hollywood Makeup Dynasty. Which is hella awesome. I believe I once heard that one of them WORKED HIMSELF TO DEATH on Gone with the Wind.

I forgot about the Bermuda Triangle on Passions!! I honestly think Luis and Sheridan had like one, real-life love scene the entire series. Any others were coma/dream/hallucination induced.

    Also, Precious the monkey nurse.

    Passions was insane.

    • LoriK

You left out that best part—that one year the show submitted the orangutan who played Precious for a Daytime Emmy.

      • Helen
        0

        NO. Did they really?

        That is priceless!

I watched the show one summer, when I was veeeerrry sick with mono, and it was the only thing that moved slowly enough for me. :-)

Is this a daytime event? Because I kind of think they’re all dressed for lunch.

Which is fine (though I didn’t think any of it was fab), I just expected a little more pizzazz.

Note: While the U.K. Being Human ultimately failed as a series, largely due to unexpected casting changes forcing storyline, it started out very well, as something really special; the U.S. version is unwatchable to me. I’m American if that makes any difference.

    • Aphy

I watched the UK version (loved George), but I just cannot get into the U.S. one. My sissy feels the exact opposite. Hrm.

Yeah, I hardly know anyone who likes both. Seems like it’s one or the other.

Would it be sacrilegious for me to say that not only do I agree with you about my love for the English version over the American one, but I also felt the same way about The Office. I loved Ricky Gervais’s excruciating lack of self awareness as David Brent. Steve Carrell never was in the same comic league for me.

How awesome was George in the season 1 finale? Loved the first few seasons of the UK version.

He was awesome. I loved George and the first two seasons were just great tv. I can’t really find anything to watch anymore. Booooo.

Julyo1972, I’ve heard that from alot of people, not sacrilege at all.

I also can’t deal with the change to “SyFy” and pronounce it “Siffy.” Hee! Because really, it’s SciFi. And there’s nothing wrong with that abbreviation!

I watched Passions and wouldn’t have recognized Sheridan (sp?) in this picture. I like some of the dresses, but was there a rule about wearing (or not wearing in this case)sleeves?

  14. Sandra

Is there something about science fiction that makes it impossible for dresses to be fitted properly to actors’ torsos? They all pull weirdly across the hips, or embiggen the waist, or some other form or not-rightness. Fight it, ladies!

“which was also the time her brother was walking around town carrying a book called How to Murder Your Sister and Get Away With It. ”

Is this real??? From your descriptions, Passions sounds totally insane. In what I’d like to believe is a good way.

    • Helen

Well, it’s hilarious, but I wasn’t kidding about it being the only thing slow enough for me when I had mono. Each day’s episode was pretty much a rehash of the previous day’s. Things did eventually occur, but at such a glacial pace that, say, Days of Our Lives could be considered a breakneck race by comparison.

Allison Scagliotti isn’t at all unknown – she rocks Warehouse 13 and is one of the cutest characters on that show. I prefer her hair red but she is so pretty whatever the color.

I keep meaning to ask you to catch a few episodes of FaceOff. Ms. Westmore has never met an asymmetrical top/dress that she didn’t love. It is near constant. I’m amazed to see her so well balanced.

This entire post was brilliant and hilarious, so I almost hate to point out that there were some really iffy clothes in there that didn’t get the spotlight they’d earned, because it IS much more entertaining to imagine a “hot and steamy schnitzel delivery boy” that isn’t in a porno film….

That said, Mia Kirshner’s dress is terrible; she looks like a kid wearing her voluptuous mother’s slip. The only positive is that she had the sense to wear a camisole under it; while that DOES cover a multitude of sins, it still doesn’t make the dress FIT, though.

Also, that camera angle foreshortens Grant Bowler to the point where he appears to be kneeling, rather than standing….

I really like Jaime Murray’s outfit – I would totally wear that myself (though probably several sizes larger…).

I didn’t think SMG when I saw Jaime Murray and Julie Benz, but rather that those two once battled for Dexter Morgan. (Poor Rita!)

There is such a thing as Schnitzel delivery? Where? I want to go to there…. And does the “hot and steamy” refer to the schnitzel or the boy?

I want Hager’s shiny, shimmery, bi-colored dress, please. Love the structure of it, too. Does it come in plus size? Because I will wear the hell out of that. For seriously.

am i the only person that thinks “valemont” sounds like something i need to see immediately?? also, ditto for the love towards the UK version of being human. i tried to watch the american one, but it seemed like they were just doing the same plot/episodes and since I’d already seen it done with a cast i loved, i just couldn’t get into it.
