Teen Choice Fug or Fab: Zoe Saldana

I’m not going to lie, I really wish this were one piece instead of two.

But I guess the two-piece thing is going to happen whether I want it to or not, so maybe I just have to get on the damn bike and try to pedal and hope it doesn’t give me a crotch bruise.

I love this except for the shoes. Theoretically, I think I’d be fine with a contrasting shoe, but not these particular contrasting shoes. Not that I would wear it myself — but I enjoy the architecture and balance of a cropped shirt.

  2. Lucille Austero

Sometimes one choice isn’t enough. I love this AND stop with the cropped tops, already, my abs can’t take it. Back in the day, we called them pop tops. They were and still are very cute when worn by very cute people.

  3. Evalyn

I like the dress and she can carry off the cropped top, so it’s cute on her. I only wish her shoes fit. I like the contrast of color, but I don’t believe she can walk without them falling off her feet, tangling around her ankles and causing an embarssing fall which leads to an ambulance ride, insurance forms, long wait times in the ER. See what happens?

“maybe I just have to get on the damn bike and try to pedal and hope it doesn’t give me a crotch bruise.”

Oh my god. You are hilarious.

    • Amber

I second. I actually choked on my water when I read that. Well played, GFY Heather.

  5. Kate

I don’t mind that it’s a cropped top. I think there’s too much volume going on, and I just can’t with the 70′s avocado color palette. Also the shoes don’t look right with it, but I can’t put my finger on why.

  6. greatwhitenorthchick

I agree that the problem’s with the shoes. The satin material isn’t right; the heal section looks bulky and ill-fitting; the things look darn uncomfortable to me. I think she could have bling-ed out more on the earrings, too. The colour of the outfit is made to go with gold jewellery.

  7. Fawn

I LOVE this! But only on Zoe Saldana.

    • Carol

I second the motion … no other being on the planet can get away with this … just Zoe.

  8. Francesca

She pulls off the crop top just great, but I also think the crop top is what makes the outfit just fun. Still, if it were a dress, it would be awesome and I’d want it. Badly. I like her minimal makeup and that she didn’t over accessorize. The shoes look a bit cheesy and and the toes on her left foot hang over the shoe. But props to her that she didn’t go with gold or black shoe and selected a more unusual color.

  9. sparklingKitten

I like it. Color is a little weird and I don’t like the shoes, but pretty solid. Also, I LOVE crop tops and wear them all the time. It’s damn hot outside.

  10. bambi_beth

Shoes shoes shoes, love those shoes!!

I want this to be one piece and maybe with a belt, but gosh golly gee, if Zoe Saldana can’t wear a crop with the tiniest bit of crop, then we’re all in trouble. She looks tiny and happy and adorable and she didn’t go full-on sports bra top, so I don’t think we can be upset. It’s like ye olde cigarette pants with a short sweater that just shows a hint of skin when you move. Not all crop is bad crop, I don’t think.

  11. pidget

I had a different-coloured (Miami Vice pastel) version of this in 1986… Man, I’m ancient.

Also agree on wrong-shoes. Too shiny and the wrong shade of green. She could go either gold, or warm-toned flat boho, or perhaps a matte leather green, but not teal. Still, she is very nearly carrying this off. The Power of Pretty is strong in this one.

  12. Laucie

The ship carrying my abs ( or to be frank, my so-called abs) sailed so long ago, I can view this solely in the context of how Zoe, and only Zoe, looks in this outfit. It’s avocado, has a crop top and bubble skirt, and teal satin shoes. Yet, somehow she looks fresh and modern, and is showing the exact amount of skin appropriate to Teen Choice.

  13. TonyG

She looks good in it, but this is not a good two-piece (color drab, pattern is for curtains in the pool room, the pouf/bubble design on the skirt makes it look unfinished).

  14. Lynne

God, I hate everything about this. The color is appalling and makes her look as though she’s just been brought back to life. And the crop top thing needs to stop. It was ugly the first time. It’s even uglier now.

    • Jeanette

Agreed Lynne – it is an unflattering hue, even on one so pretty as Zoe Saldana . I would quite like the shoes if they fit properly – but they look darn painful.

  15. Leah

She looks cute, happy, and teen-appropriate. I’d rather see this part of your stomach than your pelvic area.

  16. lori

Other mortals can’t wear this. Zoe can – I love it. Shoes et al….

  17. Kris M

And aren’t we done with bubble skirts? Ugh.

  18. val.

The hems on both the top and bottom look cheap and quickly done. It’s like an old 70s dress from the thrift store that was altered by a novice seamstress. And the shoes aren’t a good choice either.

  19. Krissy

I think I would like it if the fabric weren’t soooooo heavy. It looks like curtain material.

  20. crystal

I feel pretty neutral about this whole outfit, but I’m cool with it being a crop top so I went with option 1, but now I’m looking again and I feel like she needs more substantial earrings or brighter lipstick or something, so I guess option 3?

    Polls are so stressful sometimes!

  21. DanerKebab

If this were one piece, it would be dramatically better, but STILL WITH THE BUBBLE SKIRT OH MY WORD MAKE IT STOP. I thought those were dead already?

    • anny

They are. It wasn’t a bubble when Jonathan Saunders sent it down the runway. (The top wasn’t that short either.)

  22. Bea

Her 5 o’clock shadow is a little unbecoming.

    • LibraryChick

I looked carefully at the full-size version of the picture, and I don’t know what five o’clock shadow Bea is talking about it. There is the appearance of shadow under her nose and around the nasal-labial folds of her smile, but I think that’s from lighting as opposed to poor grooming.

I would prefer the outfit as one piece with a different type of hemline. The shoes are a bit too bridesmaid for my taste too.

  23. CJ

I actually like that it is two pieces. It’s a little more unique.

  24. Ms. A.

I like this. It’s unique and fun. LOVE the crop.

  25. vandalfan

The print looks kind of African. The hem looks like they stapled it up in the limo on the way over. It would not be difficult to turn this into a one-piece. Let me at it with my Singer.

  26. Rubee

I’ve never quite gotten the Zoe Saldana thing. But I do think she looks very pretty in this outfit, whose “it” factor is precisely being a two-piece. I would also have chosen a different constrasting shoe.

  27. Sajorina

Don’t like the outfit, the hair or the makeup! LOVE the shoes!!!

  28. Miss Louise

Totally agree – the shoes are gorgeous, but so wrong with this outfit!

  29. ronnie

Besides the two piece brouhaha, what’s with that pattern? It looks like the wallpaper in the foyer from the house I grew up in (70′s)! It wouldn’t look out of place if she was standing next to a big potted plant and a grandfather clock.

  30. TereLiz

I don’t mind the crop top on her, she can pull it off. But I feel like the bubble hem is making this amazing fabric look cheaper. I love the pattern and the color, especially with her beautiful skintone, but I wish the skirt shape was a bit more elegant.

  31. Chrissy

Yes, this would be better as a one piece, but she has a great figure and I still think it’s great. What I would change is the bubble hem, but again, I still like it despite that. I like the shoes but I am tired of the big platforms.

  32. Funkyhighness

I just can’t get past the shoes. Do they fit her? I like the style, and the pairing with the “dress”….but those shoes look awful “gape-y” in the back. Distracting!

  33. Belinda

An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a friend who was conducting a little homework on this.
And he actually ordered me dinner due to the fact that I discovered it for him.
.. lol. So let me reword this…. Thank YOU for the meal!
