Teen Choice Awards Well Played: Gwen Stefani

well-played

There are a lot of times I don’t subscribe to the philosophy, “Gwen Stefani is cooler than thou.” But this is not one of them. No offense to thee, obviously.

What is Gwen Stefani doing at the Teen Choice Awards? She’s older than many of the teens’ parents and probably even some of their grandparents. And I definitely don’t subscribe to the “Gwen Stefani is cooler than thou” theory. No Doubt has always sucked and Gwen Stefani’s pretension is just plain tiresome.

pretension? really bc all I’m getting is badass female who could suck your soul out. Perhaps that’s because I actually enjoyed No Doubt in their prime and I’d much rather see Gwen rocking ti then a ga-minaj-anna in a leotard… ALSO SHE IS SOOOO MUCH COOLER THEN THOU it’s ok to admit this she married the lead singer of bush and popped out kids that woman will ALWAYS be cooler then thou.

Oh, PB, I pity you… It must suck to live in your world, in which Gwen Stefani & No Doubt are not appreciated because both of them RULE, KICK ASS & ARE COOLER THAN THOU!

At 42, Gwen is hardly old enough to be a teen’s grandparent, but I’ll simply dismiss your hyperbolic statement as a nasty, senseless insult.
She is SO COOLER THAN THOU, always will be, whatever venue.
She is also a fashion icon.

All of what these ladies said and No Doubt has a new song out, “Settle Down”, and it is good!
        Haha

I like Settle Down too! I have not bought an actual physical CD since Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway but I will go buy the No Doubt CD the day it comes out to satisfy my inner 90′s middle schooler

You don’t have to be a teen to have teenage fans…

ouch, PB! I like a lot of No Doubt’s music…and Gwen’s look is always entertaining, even when it’s sometimes terrible. She gets it right more often than a lot of the new guard. Rihanna and Gaga and minajPerryJessieJ make me far more worried about the future. I love Gwen’s look here–those sunglasses are to die for.

Also, that body has given birth. Unbelievable.

yes, that body has given birth, twice!! plus, she’s one of those lucky people who can have her heart broken, but then write a song about it and earn lost of money (see also Taylor Swift)

That is an enviable talent. I get stuck trying to find a rhyme for “asshole”.

And I think she looks killer, both on the carpet and on stage. She really hasn’t aged a day, has she?

Didn’t she get the lovely c-tuck which I’m BEGGING for for kiddo number 3?!

Anyway, she doesn’t age. It’s not fair.

I once saw an episode of Dr Oz where he recommended that as THE best pelvic floor exercise… Anyway.

My inner teen fangirl is all lusty-eyed over those 19-up DMs. Yes she is cooler than thou.

My 42 year old outer self is openly lusting over those boots.

However, I concede that I am nowhere near as cool as Gwen Stefani. And that I would probably scare away every possible client in a three-state area if I clomped around my medium-sized Midwestern town in those. My Blakes are a little more low-key (and admittedly more comfy…)

    • Sonya

I agree with you Mahastee! I was wondering how my 31 year old non-Gwen Stefani-self could rock some DM’s this fall and winter. I am looking for a reason to buy some.
I <3 Gwen Stefani, she always brings it. I think she even rocks the crazy.

That first outfit is so Blade Runner. She looks like a gorgeous android.

Awesome. This is totally how to do pop-singer, heir-to-Debbie-Harry badass. It makes me miss the 1990s, when more female singers were sexy-cool, not just sexy-naked.

gah, how can you not love Gwen! <3

She’s 42?!?! How does this woman not age? Jeebus, she looks great. I don’t love either of those outfits but her face and hair in the first picture is fantastic. I tuned out of No Doubt after the fantastic and underrated Return of Saturn, but they’ll always hold a place in my heart. No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom tour was my first concert when I was 12 or 13. <3

Return of Saturn is STILL on my Ipod shuffle. SO GOOD.

@Stefanie that is my fav album of theirs it is amazing, I was always confused as to how it undersold so much compared to the others

        • LibraryChick
          0

Off topic, but I always thought Return of Saturn undersold because Gwen made the lyrics more personal. It featured the “my biological clock is ticking song” Simple Kind of Life (which I loved) and the song Ex-Girlfriend. Don’t Speak was also emotional on Tragic Kingdom, but the lyrics for Don’t Speak were not really limited to a girl’s perspective. Just a Girl on the Tragic Kingdom album was definitely girly, but it was also peppy enough for guys to look at it as more than just a “chick” song.
Simple Kind of Life and Ex-Girlfriend were girly but not as peppy. Since the videos for those songs got a decent amount of airplay of MTV, it’s possible male No Doubt fans gave the work a pass just from those two songs.

Oh, and the clothes? Ms. Stefani almost always rocks it out. She may have shown her abs a lot in the 1990s, but any skin showing was never in a “look at my reproductive organs” way. It was more like saying girls can have six-packs too. :) I liked it. Her current looks are age appropriate but edgy. Too bad Madonna can’t take a page from Ms. Stefani’s book.

I think we should start looking for a painting in someone’s attic of her, wherein she looks much older. That is the only reasonable explanation.

How is that this woman hasn’t aged in the past 15 years!!!!

    SHEESH!!!

Anyway – love the first look. She is very much cooler than I.

    • Chasmosaur

It’s called staying out of the sun (think about it – you don’t associate “tan” with this woman) and having a great skin care and workout regimen.

Question was rhetorical, but thanks for the tips. ;)

          ;) No problem.

Actually, any time I see comments like that, I think about an interview I once read with Lauren Hutton.

She was then in her 50′s, and someone was asking her secret for still looking so incredible. She said if it had been up to her alone, she doubted she would have looked so good. She credited years of detailed professional attention to her skin, hair and body in general to her good preservation.

True, Gwen has never been tan and often times looks downright pale (in a good way) which is very surprising for an Italian girl.

        • Chasmosaur
          0

As a fellow mixed Italian girl (her father is Italian, her mother is Irish & Scottish; my father is Italian, my mother is Irish & Polish), I will say that the genes don’t always mix well.

I can tan like my father…but only if I burn horribly first like my mother. For me, i’s easier to stay pale and rock a Snow White vibe. ;)

She looks superhumanly gorgeous in that first pic – those lips are superb, and the colour is perfect! But I do on occasion find myself wondering how her hair withstands that degree of bleaching – she would have to have her roots touched up, what, daily? Love how it looks on her, but do wonder how her hair doesn’t fall out.

She looks so great! She looks so effortlessly COOL that I want to go try on that outfit ( and know that it will leave me horribly disappointed!)

Im so glad to see her/No Doubt back. I love her as a strong female lead who doesn’t use over the top sex to sell, like a whole mess other female artists do. (Oh my god, I just had a “young whipper-snappers” moment.)

She is fantastic and totally cooler than thou.

regardless of how you feel about her music, or her taste, you have to admire her commitment to fashion. I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a picture of her with her roots showing, or her makeup askew.

    • Christian

True, true. And TBH I’m shocked her hair hasn’t fallen out considering she’s bleached it for ages.

SO EXCITED for the return of No Doubt! Can’t say how happy I was when I saw her come out in that performance outfit- made me all nostalgic for 1998 <3

I’m ALL about the aviators, but I may have to give those shades a try. Loves it! Also, how do I get my skin to look like that? Sheesh.

So I’m guessing that there must have been some kick-ass air conditioning where she was. Because here in the desert, just the thought of wearing something else’s skin stuck to my skin in this heat brings me out in a rash. It looks great, no doubt.

I have no opinion of her as a musician because I don’t pay any attention to pop music–haven’t in decades. Not in a snobbish sort of way, I just don’t think about it.

    • Katharine
      0

That was exactly my thought, Sandra. “Cool”, maybe, but it’s an unaccustomed 35 degrees Celsius plus humidex here today and if I wore something like that out in the sunshine for 30 seconds they’d have to mop me up with paper towel.

(And I hate that they are putting easy-on zippers onto the knee-high Docs these days. That’s why I stick to my 14-hole oxbloods; it’s CHEATIN’ if you don’t spend fifteen minutes lacing those babies up.)

OMG, that woman is one of the finest human specimens ever to grace the Earth! She’s a Rock Star, a wife, a mother of 2 and a Fashion Icon! LOVE her! LOVE both outfits! LOVE No Doubt! Like their song says “The Magic Is In The Makeup” and hers is flawless! FAB to the 10th power! So glad she’s back on stage, where her AWESOME self belongs! I’d die for those sunglasses & those shoes!!! COVET!

Whether or not you like her music, I’ve always considered Gwen to be a great role-model for girls. She never falls back on sex-appeal to sell her music or her brand. That “Tank Girl-adjacent” style of hers always feels fun, but not overtly sexualized. She’s made a name for herself in both music and fashion without compromising or changing who she is and I admire that. I think the timing is perfect for her to be at the Teen Choice Awards.

For that last photo, after the words “rump-hanging” and “pelvis” I thought the last sentence said “poop biz”. Which would still be an accurate description, in my opinion.

That being said, I do like her sunglasses in the first two photos. She is so pretty!

This outfit on most 42 year olds would have me thinking “mutton”, but not this time. I admire the performance costume, in that her singing and movement, and not the aspect of a mere flesh flash, is the focus.
