Fug File: pink

Well Played, Allison Janney

Do I LOVE the shoes? No.

Does it ruin anything? NO. That sound you hear is my inner child bemoaning my outer crone for not growing up this splendidly.

Fugleficent/Better Played: Elle Fanning at Letterman

I think Elle Fanning’s escort may be better-dressed than she is.

Although, Elle IS playing Sleeping  Beauty, so at least it’s THEMATIC that she showed up in cropped pajamas. With the kind of shoes that even your elderly neighbor Maude would not be caught dead in, for fear of being stuck with them in the afterlife.

Elle did, thankfully, change for the actual show, because she left the building in this:

Met Gala Fine or Fab Carpet: Reese Withespoon in Stella McCartney

I actually like this better than I initially thought I might.

I’m not sure what exactly was holding me back about it; clearly it fits her, and the Reese cups are supporting her witherspoons, and nobody has polterwang nor any other unfortunate imaginary lumps and bumps that usually come part and parcel with Stella McCartney’s curious dressmaking. Do we think it could’ve used a necklace? Is it that the gown feels unfinished without an extra splash of something? Or was I too distracted by this:

Tracy Flick lives! And she’s gotten herself a pretty spiffy lipstick and earring game.  I wish SJP had brought Matthew Broderick so that there could’ve been a really fancy reunion, although let’s be honest, the Reese Witherspoon movie we all REALLY want to honor with a Met Gala cast party is Cruel Intentions. Maybe that can be the theme next year.

But for real:

Met Gala Feh Carpet: Rachel McAdams in Ralph Lauren

Rachel’s head is par excellence:

And her gown is rosy, ill-fitting narcolepsy. I try not to judge too harshly by adherence to theme, because some of them are hard to follow, but seriously, did anyone put ANY thought into this, or did the people at Ralph Lauren** just fish it out of a musty closet somewhere and hope it fit her? She’s REGINA FREAKING GEORGE, PEOPLE. She fractured her spine and she still looked like a rock star. I want more for her.

** I had seen it reported as Calvin Klein, but it’s apparently Ralph, and now that I think about it, there ARE some similarities with Lupita’s better cape dress from the Golden Globes. Should’ve figured that one out. I AM FIRED.

How I Fugged Your Father: Greta Gerwig in Chanel

I almost did a “Fug or Fab” with this, but then I decided I’m mad at it.

A cute candy-pink tweedy thing could be so fun, especially with that purse. But the shoes are a putty-colored punt, he rmakeup reads messy, and the frock itself looks like it got run through the washer and dryer by mistake, and came out all distorted and unspooled. So basically, the only component of this outfit that showed up and did its best was the purse. And so I shall sue her for custody.

Unfug or Fab: Emma Stone in Christian Dior

She certainly seems happy:

And I’m largely in favor of the dress — I love that the skirt is lined, for one thing, and the color and length work nicely on her. What I’m wondering is whether the matching shoes are too much, and whether I wish any portion of the top were also lined. Note: No cats expired in the making of those curiosities. What do you think, Fug Nation? Personally, I’m in the Old Lady Zone of just being grateful she looks professional and lovely and fun, without feeling the need to involve her erogenous zones.
