High Fugshion: J Mendel Spring/Summer 2017 at New York Fashion Week

This past NYFW has been an interesting one. Things are a-changin’. Beyond the fact that the celeb quotient has gone WAY down — I think people are choosing to go to TIFF or just stay home — a lot of lines seem to be trying to figure out what’s next. Some, like Tom Ford and Rebecca Minkoff, are choosing to show lines that actually correspond with the season ahead of us — fall — and are making those clothes available for immediate purchase, which, honestly, makes sense. Some aren’t doing a runway show at all this season — Calvin Klein is having a party instead, DVF had individual appointments for editors. Kate Spade, which normally throws a big, fun, highly Instagrammable event, chose to have a much smaller presentation. Badgeley Mishka released a short film; Mischa Nonoo had her entire line premiere on Instagram. Basically, I think everyone is trying to figure out where to get actual bang for the bucks that are in short supply all around, and as such, I’ll be VERY interested to see what happens to Fashion Week as a concept over the next five years. If it were me, I would throw a glam party for celebs and certain influencers (covering your Celebrity Bases and getting you good social media coverage), have appointments for small groups of important editors, and then send out free and copious pictures of the line to literally everyone who might want to cover it. I think you’d get the same amount of love and coverage without the agita of a runway show, which is logistically impossible for half the people you want to reach anyway and which costs a fortune. And I say this as a person who covers front rows for a living! Fashion shows are wonderful to attend and really exciting, but I get they they might be falling out of favor with designers.

All that said…let’s see what J Mendel is hoping to land on celebs this season, shall we?

Some of this is glorious, some of it is INSANE, and — best of all! — some of it is both.

Emmy Awards Fug Carpet: Cobie Smulders

Cobie Smulders is both lovelier and more interesting than this.

That’s true in general, and particularly accurate when it comes to the bodice. What is HAPPENING there? It’s making shrinky-dinks out of her chest. Between this and Zosia Mamet and Michelle Dockery and even Kate Mara… am I the only person out there who’s worried about the boobs? Am I their only champion? Am I the Mammarial Crusader? If so, then I guess I should borrow Zosia’s nipple armor and hit the streets.

Cobie did fare better at the EW pre-party:

Emmys Fug Carpet: Leslie Mann

I don’t mean to depress you more than last night’s ceremony already did, but:

Just imagine how great it would have been had this whole thing been lined. I know. I know. Maybe a cookie will help? We advise eating your feelings in times such as these.

Emmy Awards Fug Carpet: The Sisters Deschanel

Well, we can all give a cheers to Zooey Deschanel not showing up at the Emmys looking like she just rolled off the cover of Entertainment Tweekly.

But, even though that ice blue is fabulous with her eyes, I think she pushed herself too far the other way. This is a bit stiff and matronly. The wearer of this dress should be some fabulously jaded, cynical fifty-something former trophy wife who makes one of her son-in-law’s groomsman check her stockings for runs, wink-wink, and then makes a man out of him in the coatroom.

Emily didn’t fare so well either:

Emmy Awards Fug or Fab: Kate Mara

This is SO what happens when Kate Mara wanders over to Rooney’s and asks her if she has something to wear to the Emmys. I know it’s wacky, but here’s my deep dark secret: I kind of like it.

New York Fugshion Week: Runway Fugs and Fabs, Day 7

It is hard to top Rodarte from yesterday, and luckily, I don’t think anybody really tried. Thank God. “Trashy bananas” is tiring.
