SAG Awards Fugs and Fabs: The Blues

The good news is, Claire Danes should keep her hair like that forever, because the gentler color really suits her. The bad news is, the dress. The good about THAT is, presumably she took it off later and won’t have to deal with it again.

Emmy Awards Fugs and Fabs: Greens and Blues

I always come away from these things thinking, “Gah, nobody wore color,” and this year I think that’s because many of the female winners — Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Anna Gunn, Claire Danes, Merritt Wever — did not. So I’m always pleasantly surprised to be able to compile the occasional slideshow that reminds us all that Mr. G. Biv is alive and well, even if he’s being abused a little bit.

Well Played, Katy Perry…?

Katy Perry certainly prefers being thematic when she promotes the Smurfs movies. But I think we can all agree that this is preferable to the absurdities of last time’s cartoon sex-organ sheath.

Is blue awfully adorable for a movie about a blue-tinted gnomic race that is so vain it can’t NOT base all its vocab on its own name? (Imagine if we were all, “You are so humany, Jon Hamm,” or, “I just American’d the car.”) Yes. Yes it is. But she also looks really pretty, and appropriate for a daytime premiere of a kiddie movie. And as a bonus, one of the Smurfs on the poster is accidentally photosmurfing her with bunny ears, which gives me warm feelings about the whole damn enterprise. Well, except for the movie itself. Here is how I feel about that: If I am on a plane and my choice is watching that movie and staring at the seatback tray table, I’m going to ogle the hell out of that beige bastard.

Well Played, Sandra Bullock

I love that Sandra Bullock is repeating these shoes — I mean, it’s what we all do, if we have a pair we really like and we’re due on a press junket in Sydney and we maybe don’t know what we’re going to feel like wearing on the rest of our body. You pack the shoes that make you feel hot and then hope something else in your luggage feels okay even if you get bloated on tiny bottles of wine and airplane snacks.

She packed correctly, because the outfit looks casually perfect and the shoes provide exactly the right sharpened edge. And obviously she avoided the bloat, because she is Sandra Bullock and is therefore probably too cool to bloat. Some people just walk in the light, man.

Pretty Well Played, Jessica Chastain

Can we examine again how fantastic her head is?

Great makeup — particularly the lip — and her hair looks amazing, and this whole thing is basically making me re-examine my life to see if I can turn into this without resorting to surgery.

In this close-up the dress is making her look a tad slumpy, but in the wide shot, I really like it:

BAFTAs Well Played: Jessica Chastain

We’ve been talking for a while about how all the coats Jessica Chastain wears in and out of the theater for The Heiress are really great.

Well, in keeping with the “Forget It, I’m Cold” theme of the BAFTA night, she finally got a chance to deploy one on a bigger stage. And you’ll be happy to know — unless for some reason you are an anti-Chastite — that what she had on under it worked really nicely too:
