SAG Awards Red Carpet Well Played: Hailee Steinfeld

well-played

During the awards, I got a text from Heather — YES SOMETIMES WE ARE NOT IN THE SAME ROOM (but never fear, we remain in communication if something happens that the other person needs to know about, like one of us has a really good sandwich) — and it said, “I both love Hailee’s dress and think it looks like an Ikea bedspread. ” I replied that I ALSO loved it, and yet was reminded of a fabulous beach towel. And then we agreed that in spite of this, the dress is great and she is fabulous, and that, Fug Nation, is about the size of it:

How cute is this? I think she’s my best-dressed of the night for the second awards ceremony in a row. (It is Prada, in case you’re wondering who makes something that’s both REALLY CUTE and sort of reminiscent of a variety of linens, in a way that is not actually an insult.) I just think it’s so, so charming: graphic and bold and very age-appropriate. I love that it has straps — it makes it so much younger — and I think the colors are so youthful but not at all cutesy. I would love it as a bath towel, yes, but I REALLY love it as a dress. She’s been looking so fantastic lately that now I’m getting nervous about the Oscars. You know, like say your college basketball team is really, really good. And you get toward the end of the season and you’re undefeated. Contrary to what you may believe, this is kind of a bad thing. I hate being undefeated, because the pressure — THE PRESSURE — is just too much and you start thinking that you’re GOING to lose eventually, but you’re heading into the tournament in March and if you lose then, you’re OUT, so MY GOD, you need to lose a game just so that it’s OVER with and that shoe doesn’t drop when it really, really counts. So what I’m saying is, I kind of hope she shows up to a pre-Oscar party wearing a live chicken on her head and a pair of leather booty shorts, so we can all get it out of the way and really bring it February 27th.

Yes, beach towel. But IKWYM about the IKEA linens.

    And yes, she is adorbs.

I think if the bottom part was cut-off so it was knee length, it would be less “beach towel.” Still love it though!

the colors are fun and perfectly age appropriate. if someone older wore this, i’d hate it but she looks adorable. i’m not a fan of that mermaid-y bottom, but i think it works on her b/c she’s so tall.

She looks awesome and perfect for 14!

I reminds me of licorice and I looove licorice, the dress is pretty groovy too

I love this but I would love it more without the mermaid hem but if you cut the mermaid hem it looses the youthfulness of it so she could probably recycle this in a few years but only if she keeps the body of a 14 year old whihc would be a bad thing.

    I think I waffled a bit there.

Oh, Fug Ladies, how rare it is we disagree. I gotta say, this is dreadful. She is so darn cute and a breath of fresh air, and I want so badly to like this, but Prada or no Prada, this is hideous. I can’t tell the material, but regardless, it is a $50 Bed-In-A-Bag duvet cover, the bottom onto which someone sewed the matching bedskirt. She can do so much better. And this is hurting my eyes.

Whoever her stylist is deserves a big fat raise. She always looks FAB and age appropriate. That’s a fine line to ride for a 14 year old.

I looooove this dress. She is a breath of fresh air.

I thought this was totally appropriate for a 14-year old. I’d like to see the mermaid/dust ruffle hem gone (seems like overkill with such a strongly patterned/colored fabric), but I’m willing to forgive it because she looks so happy to be wearing it.

    Fun, pretty, confident. Love it!

This is cute, but it would never work on someone who did not still look like a kid. Perfect on a fourteen-year-old. Regrettably, since this is Prada, we’re likely to see it on a number of women who are trying to look fresh, and once ‘trying’ enters that equation, it’s a loss. But I’d love to see more of the young actresses enjoying being this age, as she’s doing.

The fit is perfect on her. I agree that the straps really do make a difference here. I am SO tired of mermaid hems, but on this dress, with this print, it really really works!
    Bravo Hailee!

  15. Laura

One of my faves as well. She’s not trying to fool anyone about her age, and I commend her for that.

  16. Lindy

She is ADORABLE! Love it that she is not trying to look 20.

If she were even two years older, this would be hideous. However, she is young and fresh and so cute that it really works.

  18. Annie

Now you have me all worried about both Hailee’s Oscar look AND my Buckeyes’ chances down the stretch!

That said, she is so cute, and I love that she busted out some color for the SAGs.

  19. Dionne

I love little Hailee, but I think this is quite bad. Maybe if it ended at the knees I could get behind it, but the ruffle with the stripes with the colours with the RUFFLE are just too much. This was her misstep for me, and hopefully she’s back in form for the Oscars.

When I read a description of this dress, I winced. Now that I see it for myself, I LOVE it! It totally works on her. I agree with the comment made upthread: it’s age-appropriate, and it wouldn’t work on someone older.

    She’s 2 for 2. (Please don’t blow it, Hailee!)

    Gads, what a hideous dress.
Clashing colors and a completely bland cut.
I’m not getting all the love for this thing.
It’s a towel, it’s a bedspread, but we love it?
    HUH?

  22. Ash

Love the dress, love how well it fits her. Look at how the length is just right!

Like others here, I am not *completely* convinced by the ruffle, especially when I cover it up and see how sweet it would look as a knee-length dress. Still, it’s simple yet bold design, and there is absolutely no arguing with how cute and festive she looks. I do think some dangley silver earrings would finish the look — maybe something a bit delicate to balance the boldness of the pattern. But, hey, she’s 14. Simple works.

Also, some celbs a few years her senior could really take a lesson from her in looking poised and grown-up (*ahem* Miley Cyrus).

I’d hate this on someone else, but it’s perfect on her — bright, colorful, cute. I agree, she’s been amazingly well-dressed — attractive but age-appropriate! I hope she can keep up the winning streak.

On anyone else, it wouldn’t work, but apparently Hailee is magic, because I love it.

  27. Di

I love this. It FITS her so well without being a tight, slutty fit. I also like that she took a chance with bold colors instead of being demure. This dress tells me she has some personality, on top of her talent. She looks really great and I agree with other comments that she is both adorable and an excellent example of a confident, poised young lady. Wonderful.

  28. Jess

Adorable! And I loved when she showed Giuliana that cute bright pink “lips” ring. The perfect accessory for a young girl.

  29. Jess Goodwin

This reminds me way too much of Fruit Stripe Gum. She usually looks so great — sophisticated but not overly so for a teenager — but this is pretty awful. Really, though, in the long run it doesn’t matter; she’s got years ahead of her to look fabulous.

  30. Selyne

I think it’s the worst dress I’ve ever seen in my entire life.
I don’t want to live in a world where you can see that kind of thing, not a dress btw, just a shame.

  31. a

I hate the pattern and the design itself might be too bland

  32. Courteney

I hate the stripes. She is super cute but we’re talking about her dress here. I just wish the whole thing had been orange.

  33. Danna

IMO the dress is just OK, but it is age appropriate for her, and she’s adorable anyway.
She’ll be OK for the Oscars as along as she doesn’t let ALT dress her.

    I worked at Target a few years ago, and all I can think when I see this is the Issac Mizrahi bed collection we carried at the time. ^^;;

And if you saw her earlier in the day on CBS Sunday Morning, you can truly appreciate how cute and grounded and lovely she is. The dress certainly fits beautifully. I would have loved that same sleek ponytail she wore at the GGs with this, but 14 year old girls and their hair… best to let her do what she wants! The most rocking thing about this girl – she’s 14 going on 15, not 16 going on 40 (Momsen) and not 18 going on slutty (Miley).

  36. Cat
    0

Maybe because she’s adorable and the overall look is very age appropriate, but I’m finding it hard to ding the dress, even though I’m not totally enamored of it. On her it’s great, but I think if anyone else had worn this it would be a fug.

Maybe I’m missing something, but this does NOT do it for me. Neon and black is so painfully 90s to me and not good. At all.

I really really like it, and in fact I think I like it more every time I look at it, but best dressed of the night? I strongly disagree. Not saying it’s bad at all, but I just don’t think it’s quite that fabulous.

  40. Nina
    0

I agree that she pulls it off because she’s so sunny and it’s age appropriate. I would ditch the mermaid hem, but otherwise, very fresh, and cute. Looks like she’s having a blast.

  41. Claire Zulkey

I’m not so worried about her streak of dressing well as I am worried about her streak of winning at life. I don’t want her to become a Demi or Britney or Lindsay…

  42. kaylee

A kid! An honest to gosh KID, who looks like a kid and not a wannabe tartlet. The dress is really fun on her and I wouldn’t change a thing.

  43. Lina
    0

So pretty! What a great, unexpected choice. It’s so fun and youthful instead of annoyingly twee and youthful. Like, “this is a girl who belongs at the beach (or wherever) hanging out with her friends,” instead of “this girl is an American Girl doll brought to life, she belongs in a china cabinet *cough*DiannaAgron*cough*”

  44. testington

I am torn on it, it is cute but it doesn’t feel quite right for this event. Also I hate the fishtail on it, but without it it would just be another generic bandage dress you’d see on a Kardashian or Lohan.

  45. vandalfan

How could anyone sleep with sheets this loud? It’s mermaid and has horizontal stripes, yet she, at 14, can pull this off. How? I couldn’t even imagine SWINTON looking good in this, but it’s working for Hailee. You go, gal!

  46. Marcy

I agree with everyone. I said it last night, “This would not work at all on someone older, but this is fun, and she looks adorable and age appropriate!” Very teen in a teen, not teen prostitute, way.

    Love her!

She may be cute, a good actress, and dressing her age but this dress is awful.

I so totally love this dress and love this girl. And boy, do I agree with your winning basketball team analogy. Fingers crossed for the 27th!

BTdubs, the original Prada dress from their 2011 Spring collection is knee length and I hated it on the runway. But in a longer length on a fresh-faced teen? It’s divine.

  51. CanadianEh

I love this on her and her hair is just perfection! BTW, the dress reminds me of licorice all-sorts rather than linens.

  52. Anita

@CanadianEh, I’m Australian and I’m thinking licorice all-sort as well. Maybe it’s a colonial thing?

Don’t like being mean about a 14 year old but this dress is definitely deckchair

  54. Marianna

I love it! I like her a lot! Don’t get me wrong, she’s so great, but. But! I really wish it had been cut off at knee before that awkward bottom half. It makes me gnash my teeth, to be honest. I think it would have been so much cuter, shorter.

  55. casey

I feel like such an old woman saying this, but can’t she get her hair out of her face? God, it’s just laying there on her head – I agree with Fuh Ugh, the ponytail would have been age-appropriate and we could see her pretty face.

The transformation is complete, I have become my grandmother…

  56. mepe

She is super cute and I agree that she looks very nice and age appropriate. But I seriously doubt that the fug girls would ever fug Hailee no matter how bad she might look.

  57. Anne Hedonia

She’s young, maybe she’ll change, but that is the ugliest effing dress there’s ever been.

  58. Andrea

The dress is youthful and fresh, now I just wish they’d got her hair our of her face and styled it a bit livelier.

Prada is perfect for her – sexless but not prissy. Is it too much of a mom comment if I say that I hope it’s floor-length because she’s hiding the fact that she’s still too young for heels?

  60. rob

Best… just the best. She looks fabulous.

I think it’s reminiscent of a liquorice all sort!

  63. rose

This is really similar to that orange dress Drew Barrymore wore a few months ago and I think the reason this works so much better here is her garçon figure that doesn’t compete with the silhouette of the dress.

This is adorable and looks great on her! The stripes are perfectly placed, too. I like the fuller bottom section because it’s a slender dress and this way it doesn’t need a slit up to her underage parts so she can walk (I’m looking at YOU, Miley). Thank god it’s not one of those beige monstrosities everyone else has on; so few people can actually wear beige. It’s a happy dress for a happy girl, and I think it’s one of the best of the night.

  66. Joni Woodhead

im surprised though … you guys usually hate when the bottom seems tacked on after the fact … I think id really like it a lot more if it just ended there and she had on cute little heels with it

No. No, no, no, no. Hideous. These colours are ghastly.

    Ugh.

  69. Maryscott O'Connor

Let me explain — it’s the BLACK that kills it. If it were just the colours, it would work. If they’d added ANOTHER one to the mix, it would work. But that black, for the love of god, clashes abominably, and just destroys it.

  70. caitlin

I don’t really have anything to say, there was just 69 comments, and I found that deeply inappropriate, given her age :) so… I liked it!

No! Don’t wish leather booty shorts on her, even in jest– we don’t need another Miley/Taylor Momsen.

  72. Curtis

The dress looks ok, but Best in Show? I think not. Mila’s dress was sassy and sophisticated, and even Lea’s dress (albeit lacking some vital boob tape) was better than this. It also worries me that even in wearing horizontal stripes, this girl looks emaciated. Does her mother feed her?
