SAG Awards Fug or Fab Carpet: Natalie Portman

fug-or-fab

Well! I like it better than her Globes dress, so at least there’s that. And I think she actually works the white almost better than anyone — it’s just flattering with her coloring. But here’s the thing: I’m not entirely sure I’m in love with the way this fits. Am I craaaaaaaaazy as a swan? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

How does it grab you?

Too tight in the butt and you could tell because it looked like she was having trouble walking in it when she came out with Mila Kunis.

Not a fan. All I could focus on was the wrinkles under her bump. But then, I am also skeeved out by baby bumps, so there’s that.

I originally read the third option as the “Grey Goose of gowns.” Just saying.

Oh man, awards season is going to be absolutely filled with pics of her baby bump, isn’t it? I think pregnancy is great and women should embrace their bodies, but bellies and award gowns just don’t go together…

  5. Melissa

She was definitely having trouble walking in it, which indicates it was way too tight. Also did you see how badly wrinkled it was under the bump when she went up to get her award? I mean, sure, that happens after you’ve been sitting for a couple of hours, but methinks it would not have been so wrinkled had it not been so tight.

I feel like I can tell what she looks like naked through this one. It’s making me feel sleazy.

  7. Brooke

I gave it the thumbs up owing exclusively to the fact that she isn’t doing that horrific hand-under-bump pose.

It is a beautiful dress in theory. Two weeks ago it would have been stunning. It’s her first, so she probably didn’t know about overnight growth…but you’d think a stylist would know that as part of her job, right? I blame the stylist.

Too tight. Beautiful pregnant ladies look much better in soft, draping gowns … like she wore to the globes. That style in the white would have been lovely.

I think it would be prettier with a larger, more flowy fit, even it that is a bit mumu. Maybe an empire bust, even if it is a very safe choice.
At least her face and hair is absolutely stunning!

I like the dress, but I hate the hair. For some reason, I hated most people’s hair last night.

I have nothing against baby bumps, babies, or anything child-bearing related, but that dress just looks odd. Like she just has a bit of a pot belly instead of a baby belly.
I also agree with the dress being too tight on th butt. Even though I feel weird looking at anyone’s hindquarters for that long.

I think christine christine hit it on the head. Two weeks ago (heck, ONE week ago!) it was probably impeccably fitted. Bellies grow fast. I do like the looseness of it around the bump, and it is flattering on the top. Overall, I like it, even if her butt is somewhat on display.

It’s a bit jarring for me because I feel like she’s showing a lot and just announced her pregnancy like a month ago. But then again, they don’t formally announce it until they start to show.

Back to the gown. It’s pretty but too snug on her. She looks uncomfortable, and she shouldn’t be this far into her pregnancy. She should have worn something looser and less form fitting.

  15. Clara

I like the dress alot. But as noted too tight. Silk does not give! Perhaps if it was a heavy weight fabric that did’nt grab her fanny like Brad grabs Angie, it would work. I wish I looked as good as she does when I was pregnant. I don’t recall any glowing.

  16. Lisa

It just looks too tight, and too uncomfortable. Catherine Zeta Jones set the bar for accepting an award whilst preggers and she did it gloriously, this looks like a skinny girl not wanting to give in to the changing shape of her body.

too tight around her butt …like everyone else has aready said. The wrinkles were disconcerting and I wondered if she might actually explode out of the dress before the evening was done – like a superhero or the Hulk — Gravid Girl to the rescue lol

Nicely conceptual, if a bit on the nose. But still one of the loveliest looks I’ve seen on pregnant woman.

  19. wtfnyc

I like the neckline, but the rest is just…uncomfortable to look at. It’s like just by looking at her you can FEEL her discomfort/confinement. Contrast that with Jane Krakowski and how easy and comfy, yet pretty she looked in her Badgely Mishka. Go up a size or change dresses, Natalie — I don’t watch awards shows to feel other people’s pain!!!

OK, this is the ONE time – the only time – I am going to argue for calling Rachel Zoe. RZ been hittin’ the carpet at 7 (or 8?) mos. and you don’t see her looking like an over cooked hard boiled egg. Isn’t Natalie Portman at like 4.5 mos.? GEEZ, is she having triplets?

PS, this dress might have worked better if she hadn’t sat in the limo. Surely she could sprawled across the backseat or something. I like her hair and jewelry and the way this dress fits around the … neckline? bustline? … the sparkly part. But that big bulge with the creases emphasizing it is not a good look.

  21. Treva

It does seem to fit oddly, but I’m also 5-foot-nothing and had an enormous belly at 4.5 months pregnant (people thought I was 6 months along). Honestly, dudes, she’s dressed, she looks alert, she’s not falling over — I give her a pass and my full sympathy.

  22. Lina

It’s a beautiful dress. I think I’d like to see what it would have looked like if she had gone up a size, because it might work fine that way. I AM glad to see all these gorgeous pregnant women wearing actual dresses instead of the old obligatory pregnancy muʻumuʻus.

  23. Reject

    So many shifting emotions…

At first I was like, “Oh honey, no”, cause of the fit around her baby bump. But then, the color won me over. THEN, I see the Portman posterior, and I am questioning the fit again.

My final conclusion is that she is pregnant and it works! Have you ever tried to get a designer dress altered for your specific dimensions? Now imagine that your body shape changes on a daily basis cause you are supporting a new life inside you. I don’t care how rich you are, no alteration can keep up with that biology. She looks beautiful, nuff said.

It is not as if Natalie has ballooned up during this pregnancy, but the contract in her being unnaturally thin for Black Swan to her being pregnant throws off my perception of what she normally looks like. But this sort of gives her linebacker shoulders.

Also, can I take this moment to say “Duck, duck, goose” not “duck, duck, grey duck”.

  25. Jamie

All I can say is, if my stomach was expanding out before me at an alarming rate, but I still had a pretty cute butt, I wouldn’t be averse to showing it off a little. At least she’s not in a giant pregnant-lady mumu.

  26. M.Amanda
    0

It does look a little tight, but I will give a pregnant woman some leeway in that department since it’s hard to walk that line between “too tight” and “wearing a tent,” especially when you’re planning an outfit for a special occasion for weeks or months beforehand. She’d almost need a tailor standing by the day before the event.

  27. Kate

she is just so gorgeous. she can do no wrong.

  28. Linda

The first thought that popped into my head was “it probably fit her great a week ago”. Judging by the other comments, that is a pretty popular thought. I love the dress and she looks fabulous, but it is a tiny bit too tight.

  29. Lindy
    0

Don’t understand how ANYONE could like this dress on her. Plus, this is tube dress–just two pieces of fabric sewn together. It requires no skill or art to make. Heck, I could make this dress, and when I did it would darn sure fit her better! I mean, come on, she is Natalie Portman, she could wear literally 100s of other dresses from fabulous designers–and she chooses a wrinkled, too-tight tube dress?

  30. Shnaggi
    0

Clara is right right right…its all about the fabric. Something a little heavier would have helped and lining the gown would have been benificial to prevent the naked look to her backside. Otherwise this is a vast improvement on the Pink catastrophe Globes night.

  31. Jill

I think the tightness in the butt is over compensating to create a structure, rather than another topsheet toga. Project Rungay had a picture of the runway dress with this and it’s interesting to see how they adjusted it to fit her stomach.

  32. unbounded
    0

Really? I thought she looked gorgeous. Way better than the Globes. And if it clings a little to her butt, seriously, wouldn’t a dress like that cling to anyone’s butt? Is it not okay to show her butt just because she’s pregnant? That said, I bet it did look better a week ago and poor thing, this is her first kid and I bet she had no idea she would balloon up like this.

  33. Sarah
    0

I thought she looked gorgeous and she definitely has the figure to wear a dress that hugs her curves. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the wrinkles….I wish the dress had been made in a jersey material….no wrinkles and probably would have been much more comfortable for her too.

  34. Robin
    0

I will give her the benefit of the doubt that her baby belly may have grown very quickly recently BUT it would look a lot better if it was looser below the belly and not quite so form fitting. Also, that top is not flattering on her boobs at all. It’s pretty clear she’s not used to dressing-for-boobs, but such a harsh horizontal line and stretchy-yet-unfitted fabric is kind of a no-go unless you are an A cup.
Speaking of which, she looks so so much better with an oz of arm fat. She actually looks like a woman and not a stunted woman child. I know she lost weight for BS, but even the nude scene in Hotel Chevallier made me cringe…too much spine! Yey pregnancy weight and here’s to keeping some of it on.

  35. Sara L.

I think it probably is tight across her butt because of the belly. It looks like the fabric is trying it’s darndest, but being pulled in two different directions is killing the drape. As others have said, probably fit perfectly a week ago.

  36. Melissa

TMI. Pregnant or not pregnant, if I can see your belly button dip and almost guess what you had for lunch, the dress is too tight. I do like the way this cradles the bump rather than smothering it, dispensing with the need for the horrible hand-under-bump pose, and I can sympathise with overnight growth spurts, but I think if you’re Beautiful Pregnant Oscar Nominee Natalie Portman you have every designer in the world trying to dress your bump right now and a size up is but a phone call away.

  37. M. Ennis

It makes her look way more pregnant than she is. The belly accentuating bit in the front enlarges the belly, but then from the side, she doesn’t look nearly as pregnant. I’m glad she’s happy about it and all, but she’s got plenty of time to look that big in front. I do appreciate that it’s a departure from the ubiquitous pregnant lady empire waist.

I also read it as Grey Goose. Although, I’m not sure when I was last deeply conflicted by vodka. Booze is almost always a yes.

This gown is simply too small for the size of her baby bump. Her belly is bigger than her stylist expected it to be.

  40. Snarky Sharky

I’m just letting her have it – the woman is seriously pregnant and looks awesome in WHITE – that’s an achievement alright.

  41. mepe

Definitely too tight. She looks great in white and pregnancy really suits her so it’s really too bad that the dress didn’t ‘t have a different silhouette to allow for her growing bump.

  42. vandalfan

I’m completely grossed out. (and over 50, so bear with me) And I’m sure she has no heiney at all, how could she look this droopy back there? I’d take the side seams out about 1″ from the natural waistline all the way down to the floor.

  43. Francie

Forgive me if anyone has already said this, but the problem is that she needs it to be Petite. All short women have this issue, thus the back of the zipper is hitting her in the wrong place.

  44. Erin

Jane Krakowski has had some awesome outfits for the awards so far and she’s further along than Natalie! She has colour & sass and her dresses both flatter her AND show off her bump! This dress was so shapeless, too long and too tight. If Natalie’s going for an ethereal flowy womanly gown look it’s not working. It just looks drab and ill-fitting.

  45. Amanda
    0

It’s not an abomination like her Globe dress, but I don’t particularly like it either. Badgley Mischka, as evidenced by Jane Krakowski, is the only one who should be doing maternity clothes. Grey swan, it is.

    The problem is the hair!!!

  47. Kris
    0

She looks awesome! I’m with Jamie and unbounded – Why shouldn’t she show off a great butt? If she weren’t pregnant, there wouldn’t be close up shots of her butt, it’s awful that you criticize that. Jealous that when you were pregnant, your keister didn’t look that great?

  48. Betsy

Don’t understand the wrinkly gowns this season. Julianne Moore had the issue at the Golden Globes too. Don’t people think about their fabric choice, knowing they are sitting in limos and then in seats for butt-numbing amounts of time. I just have not noticed this many wrinkly issues before. Can I blame HD?

  49. snorkel.maiden

I love it. I don’t like how pregnant celebrities sometimes like to see how many yards of fabric they can get into one dress; her Globes dress was like that. She’s got it- why not flaunt it?

  50. Elyse
    0

She needs to stop wearing these AWFUL gowns. They all look like bags and this looks like a poorly taken in bag. She needs to start rocking fitted dresses or empire waist dresses. It’s OKAY to show off your bump. Stop trying to hide it.

  51. kimmy
    0

its just too small. the fabric needs to be something w/ some stretch or drape. maybe jersey? she keeps going for these heavy/satiny dresses and they just don’t work on these new curves. i also think she should have left her hair down and loose. with all of that, she looks 10 times better than at the Globes!

  52. kimmy
    0

oh and there is no excuse for Nat. Look at Jane Krackowski!! she has been wearing some amazing dresses lately and she looks like she’s about to burst!

  53. Elise

I agree she looks awesome in white. But the wrinkles below the bump weren’t good and the butt area was a disaster. I actually really liked the Globes gown. I was not bothered by the red rose, I thought it was pretty. But it is also a testament to how gorgeous Natalie Portman is that even in this unflattering dress, she looked fantastic.

Can we please call a moratorium on the expression “baby bump”?
    Ugh.

  55. CB

I love it except for the pulling under the bump and the across her backside. I mean, the one time you can justify going a size larger and you don’t? WTHey Portman? Will a size up put you in the positive sizes? HEAVEN FORFEND.

Poor love. One weeksworth of babygrowth. If there’s any time she deserves some leeway, it’s now – mind you, I’ve got two pregnant daughters at present, so I’m feeling pretty indulgent.

  58. Katharina

Don’t dig the bump flaunting. Fun fact, not much (but a little, considering) related to the subject of her dress: Millepied, directly translated from French, means thousand leg. And that’s where the name of the millipede is derived from. Because it’s got many legs! I love when silly things like that suddenly make sense

  59. Katharina
    0

And it’s also funny because that’s the name of her husband(?), Benjamin Millepied. which was the point

  60. Joni Woodhead

@ Lindy … you couldnt just make this dress though, it isnt a simple tube, those pleats coming down from the bust are specially done so they can spread and make room for the belly in a specific sort of way, they are designed to kinda cradle it .. and for that, and the way the neckline in general looked so good i gave this dress a pass … true its tight on the booty but she can only go get it altered so many times

  61. Maryscott O'Connor

A smidge too tight — she couldn’t WALK.

She needs some pregnancy dressing pointers from Cate Blanchett, because girlfriend just keeps getting this ish wrong!

I think it’s too fitted in the belly and not fitted enough elsewhere.

And Melanie, I am also in favor of eliminating the phrase “baby bump.”
