SAG Awards Fug Carpet: Rose Byrne

Last year at the SAGs, Rose Byrne wore this white sequined jumpsuit. And there is no better way for me to explain how I feel about this year’s look than to tell you that I really, really miss the jumpsuit:

This is Valentino and my reaction to it is the same reaction I’ve had to almost everything from Valentino, lately — namely, it makes me start to sneeze and then I remember that I need to call my grandma.

I assume you are calling Grandma to borrow this dress. Horrible. Those ruffled sides with that ruffled hair = my vote for worst-dressed.

  2. Tinufer

Well put. Also, it makes her arms puny. I didn’t know arms could look too small and thin, but this dress shows us how it’s done.

  3. Anita

I had a blouse like this back in 1970.

    It was wimpy then, too.

  4. Annie E

I think that, if the ruffles were taken off, this might look pretty great…

    • Kris

Agreed. Take off the ruffles, take off the belt, make it strapless, we’re in business.

  5. lynn baber

    Terrible dress.

I knew when I saw it, people would be critical for the above reasons. I also really liked it and think it’s pretty. I do think for her coloring, more of a color than the pastels would be a little better, but overall, I think she looks sort of old-school good.

And that hair! She has great hair, normally, but that somehow looks both stiff and greasy. I honestly don’t think I’d mind the dress if the hair was better, but as is, she looks like an extra in a community theater play set in the 30s.

  8. qwertygirl

She appears to be about as enthusiastic about this dress as I am. Which is to say not enthusiastic at all.

  9. Heather

It’s just too much, I think. The hair looks like the ruffles. Pin that back and we’ll talk, although I think even so I’d also vote to remove the ruffles.

Also, in perusing her archive, I came across this comment on one of her fugs: “She’s almost smirking. Keep at it, doll — by 2013, you’ll be turning cartwheels on the red carpet.” Maybe at the Oscars?

  11. Sandra

Remove all the foofy bits and make it sleeveless and we might have something to work with.

  12. Nancy

Poor Rose, she looks like she is about to puke.

  13. Katie Lynn

From the look on her face, she realizes this was a poor choice. I wonder if she was forced to try on dresses somewhere where there were no mirrors and the only person to help her choose secretly (or not so secretly anymore, as it were) hates her? I’m gonna go with that.

    • Emma

I think she may have suffered a bout of hysterical blindness and just recovered when she got to the venue.

  14. EG

I’m in the minority, but I like it!
I really wish she had a different hairdo though, this one does NOT go with the dress.

I actually like the dress but I don’t think it’s quite right for her. Her skin is too pale to offer much contrast and she’s just not the right person for it. I think the dress may have been better on Michelle Williams…also with a hot pink belt instead of a white one.

  15. mary lou bethune

She is so very pretty yet she cannot get it together for an event. The pink that Lea Michelle had on would have been lovely even with the silly curls.

  16. gin_in_teacups

Meh. Maybe I would like it better if the ruffles didn’t go all the way down. But I don’t hate it.

Maybe if the colour was different? Uh, no, this is an awful dress, but the awfulness is ramped up by a hundred by the hideous colour scheme. I bet if you ate a can of Pringles and drank a litre of peach juice and then puked, it would be exactly that colour.

I don’t know who Rose Byrne is, but I saw her interviewed on The Jonathan Ross Show at the weekend, and she is absolutely gorgeous, like other-worldly gorgeous. But not even she can work this dress.

  18. witjunkie

I usually have affection for ruffles, but the print here is just tired and depressed and doesn’t want to get off the couch.

  19. lindsay

i feel like her face looks… different. i barely recognized her.

the hair is so droopy. she reminds me of moaning myrtle’s cousin or something.

  20. kindakute

May I just say that EVERYONE looks better when they smile for a picture. The hair is also dreadful. A ponytail would be better than this droop fest.

  21. Cat

This isn’t my style at all, but I actually find myself loving this. It’s soft and ethereal– I love it. I agree that the hair doesn’t quite work and the color of the dress may be washing her out, but I still like it.

  22. mauxxo

I thought it was Sean Young!

  23. May

She is so beautiful… and yet in this dress… with her hair like that… it’s not good.

  24. maryse

she is unrecognizable. which is maybe a good thing. ick.

  25. Bonnie Klein

Glinda the Good Witch after painting the bathroom.

  26. Fletcher

Ruffled dress – ruffled hair. I agree, granny all the way!

  28. Sajorina

Oh, you made me miss my grandma, whom I lost last year… I wish I could call her!

Anyway, her hair & makeup are pretty, but her dress is questionable! I wonder if the dress would look better in another fabric or if it would look better in this fabric, but without the ruffles (and I love ruffles)! She’s so beautiful!

  29. Vandalfan

Maybe if the skirt ruffles swept in a curve over her hips and joined in the small of her back.

Valentino’s designs haven’t been too terrific lately, I’ve noticed. This looks middle-aged.
