SAG Awards Fug Carpet: Julianna Margulies

I swear to God, we’ve seen this dress already. I just can’t place it. Surely, one of you will remember if, in fact, we have. Maybe I saw it at Fashion Week? MAYBE I DREAMED IT. No, if I dreamed it, her hot husband would have had his face silk-screened across the skirt:

The good news is, now that she’s done wearing this in public, she can use it as a tablecloth for more formal events at home.

The cheesy line of sequins between the white and black on the shirt seals the “no” deal for me.

It reminds me a little of Reese’s 2011 Oscar look, hair and all.

    http://www.projectinspired.com/wp-content/uploads/reese-witherspoon-oscar-2011.jpg

But I actually don’t mind it. It’s a little retro Barbie-ish, but not in an over the top way?

      Reese’s was tuxedo-y and I liked it.

Julianna is GORGEOUS, and the dress is not bad, but I’m not feeling it for her. Maybe if it were all one color???

    I actually quite like it

As I was trying to say before you deleted and reposted the dead link, it reminds me of the one Marion Cotillard wore: http://gofugyourself.com/sag-awards-fugs-or-fabs-jennifer-lawrence-and-marion-cotillard-01-2013

Just with reversed colour scheme and not strapless.

The silvery material and the cut of the top remind me of Gwyneth Paltrow’s MetBall apron: http://gofugyourself.com/met-ball-fug-carpet-gywneth-paltrow-05-2012

If it didn’t have that gawdawful slit and the black pieces were some other rich, jewel tone this might have worked.

The top looks like polyester, the tiny little non-functional bow thing seems to be bias tape folded in half and topstitched, and those shoes look like heeled jellies.

    This is so horrendous.

And — oh my god — I just noticed the CLEAR PLASTIC material joining the upper and lower portions of the skirt. Look at the large picture and you can see the red carpet through it on the left side. This isn’t a tablecloth, it’s a shower curtain.

I really like it except for the slit. Her hair and makeup are great and if it weren’t for the slit the dress would be very nice.

What makes this so fug to me is that long skinny bow (why?) and the shoes. Otherwise it may be just ok.

    • Sara

Agree – that skinny tie is awful. The two parts of this dress really just don’t work together. At all. The way that the skirt wraps is so awful.

I think she looks lovely. I like her in this dress and style.

Were there evil fairy god-mothers at her bat mitzvah? Because she’s been wearing some stuff lately that is not up to her usual standard and not flattering to her at all.

I actually loved this dress. a real fashion statement. I do agree with a previous poster that this could have been much better with no skinny bow and also I am bit bothered by the bottom black part, why couldnt have continued all white? would have been so much classier. So I guess maybe I didnt love it as much as I thought? well I love the idea of it as a statement. I think I am going to stick to that so not to lose my mind in circular outfit logic.

I hate this whole look and those shoes hurt my eyes. Such an ugly dress and shoes on such a beautiful woman! And…is that plastic sewn in between the black and white at the bottom!?! I can’t EVEN, blech!!

I like the idea of that dress a great deal, actually. Clean. Simple. Bold contrasts. Shapes. I would wear that in a hot second. I’m not so crazy about the shoes (I’d go with something less fidgety), the weird line of plastic (?) trim above the hemline band, and the cheap aura of the satin generally.

I think this is an Unfug It Up. I would have been good if it didn’t have the black band at the bottom and she had worn different shoes.

Maybe I’m the only one who loves the shoes, but I WANT THEM.

I’m kind of digging this dress. She is owning it too even though the dress could have easily swallowed her.

What bothered me was how wonky the seam was where the top and bottom parts meet in the front on her left side. It was very noticeable (and distracting) when she was presenting. Made what could have been a striking dress look like a home ec project.

Yes, the construction is… not good in the closeup at all, which baffled the HECK out of me when I went and looked up the designer — Chado Ralph Rucci, considered the Lord of Fine Stitchery.

I actually really liked this one. It’s very dramatic 60s formal entertaining at home.

i’m with you. i like the idea of this dress but i think it looks cheap. and the trim is horrible.

    The shoes scare me.

The bottom half is pretty much the only thing which works for me actually. Remove that hideous plastic strip at the bottom, change the top, the shoes, jewelry and hair style and I think it could have looked pretty good.

You saw it on Geena Davis at every awards event in the 90s.

I like this quite a bit. I think it’s in the best dressed category. It’s different without being way over the top, flattering to her figure and coloring.

I don’t see how this is worse than Marion Cotillard’s SAG dress. Not sure about the shoes, but on the whole I like it.

  27. Susan

Sans split, this dress reminds me of my junior prom dress from 2000. Icy blue with iridescent sequin flowers and silver embroidery on the bodice.

I’m sure she’s worn something similar before, but she does know what works for her and sicks to it. She’s doesn’t actually have a beautiful face, but she can put herself together so well that she’s not known as a beauty. Wish I could do the same, believe me!

An I’m willing to forgive that skirt all its flaws, because it displays the shoes so well. I don’t like slit skirts in general, because as a method of displaying legs they can look awkward or trashy, but here she’s showing off her lustworthy shoes rather than her legs.

    • Caro

That’s part of the problem because who in hell would want to show off THAT footwear? They are horrifying!

    • Esme

Really? Because I think her face is gorgeous! To me, she is one of the prettiest actresses, especially at her age.

I like this, other than the shoes (at least with this dress). I thik the shape of the bodice is just great on her.

This dress is TERRIBLE it should go straight into the garbage whenever she can get her hands on another dress. I have noticed she has been wearing some very unattractive dresses to some of these places. Her husband needs to put his foot down and not let her leave the house till she finds something better.

This dress is terrible. She needs to throw it in the garbage ASAP. Her husband shouldn’t let her leave the house till she finds something that looks good from now on.

Marion Cotillard wore a REALLY similar one to the SAGs as well. And she was much more successful.

Yup, I actually totally like this whole look. It took me a second to get over the fact that her dress might be frowning, but once I did I was totally on board.

I was REALLY sad about all the hate this was getting because I thought it was really kind of cool until I blew the picture up and saw the CLEAR PLASTIC and the AWFUL STITCHING OF PLASTIC HATE and now I cannot unsee that and I’m sad.

Oh it’s Chado Ralph Rucci. Surprising actually. I generally like that designer.

Oh this is awful! And she’s so beautiful, too.

When she was standing behind the lectern to present, the cut of the skirt (or however it joins to the bodice) made her look pregnant. Also, I am probably the only one, but I miss her ER curls.

This is clearly a divisive look! I’m going to weigh in on the Like side. It’s interesting and different, the fit of the bodice is flattering, and I actually like the shape of the skirt. I also like the shoes, so SUE ME. Julianna’s face is so beautiful that I probably give her more of a pass than I should. In closeup I noticed she has a scab below her knee and I love that. Even movie stars get scabs.
