SAG Awards Feh Carpet: Natalie Portman

I mean, sure. Her face is great, if you’re into that kind of thing. (This is where I confess that I have never really felt the Natalie Portman thing. I mean, she is objectively pretty, but she has never inspired any real EMOTION in me. I think she might be a pretty robot. GO AHEAD AND HATE ME.*)

That being said, she has so many fantastic fashion resources at her hands and yet she has been so very snooze-y this awards season. As the outgoing Best Actress, shouldn’t she be trying harder to make us miss her?

*Although, HOLY COW, I just read that SHE is the producer who brought Scruples to ABC for this upcoming season. SHIT. Are we secret soulmates?

She looks terrified! I like the dress though and her makeup is flawless, but she just looks so fragile!

    Love the dress.

I have to say, I like the dress, the color, even the subdued-ness here. I think it does say outgoing Best Actress: simple, confident. She doesn’t need to makes us pay attention, she did last year.

Yes, I agree. Not a “WOW” dress, but classy and pretty. And did you see the ring on her finger? Want!

I tend to agree. Yes, it’s not incredibly dramatic, and I probably would like it better without the flower, but it’s pretty and elegant, without drawing attention away from the actual nominees. It’s a rich color and I like the sparkly clutch, so I’m giving it a pass. Plus, she’s a new mom and not nominated for anything, so I’m sure she’d rather be at home cuddling her baby than parading around the awards-circuit, so I’m willing to give her points for looking put together and pretty, even if her looks thus far haven’t been jaw-dropping.

      totally agree.

I completely agree with Grete: good point, well made about not needing to grab attention this year. That said, can nobody in the film business see that she can’t act? Black Swan is fine, but she’s kinda leaden, and the less said about the Star Wars prequels the better – her saying the one word ‘Naboo’ gives me nightmares. And Closer mnay be the worst film ever made – she’s lke the female Clive Owen – she can act herself, which is OK in some roles, but anything involving the expression of emotion makes her look wooden and doll-like. Actually, now that I say doll-like, I think it sort of describes this outfit, too…

Bleh. I’ve been over Natalie Portman since Star Wars. Which is sad because she’s soooo pretty, then she shows up places in dresses that are just OKAY and then makes a constipated face. Which oddly enough is the face I made through 95% of Black Swan.

hahahahaha But seriously, after Star Wars? We’re done here.

It’s the face SHE made through 100% of Black Swan. She started at about the same place she ended (except alive vs dead…or was that death just symbolic? Beyond me.) The dress is a bore, but if she had smiled it might have seemed less so.

Very much a wallflower dress (sadly literally). Her styling is fine and she wears brown very well, but the dress itself is meh, although it looks like it probably moved well.

Dear Nat, stop with the boob flowers. I don’t want to associate you with boob flowers, but it’s becoming theme here.

I love the color and the drape of the fabric. The cut of it and her overall styling, not so much.

Beautiful girl, if only she could act… and had better taste in clothes.

Arse bustle, then boob bustle…neck bustle next?

Just…. Meh. Maybe a red lip may have saved it? Or a red purse? I don’t know – just some colour SOMEWHERE.

Oh, she seems to be made of glass, so pretty and fragile. I’d remove the yooge rosette and make it into a halter strap, or a nice sheer sleeve and cape like Streep’s use of tulle.

I think I would have liked the dress a lot more if she has at least pretended she was happy to be there! Yeesh!

I think “snooze-y” may be the most apt description for how I feel about Natalie Portman basically…always. The color is nice, I guess? The bodice appears to be held up by an extremely droopy dinner napkin? I mean, it’s Natalie Portman, as always, I’ve got nothing.

The dress itself is blah, but the colour is Gorgeous!
I would fill my wardrobe with clothes that colour if I could.

I like the dress and I love the color, but I can’t tell if it’s brown, maroon or deep purple! I wish she’d worn her hair down for a change, but her makeup, clutch & jewelry are beautiful! I’ll give her a FAB!

Not a grown-up Natalie fan (loved her in The Professional), but sometimes she wears great stuff. Loved her glowy Oscar look last year. This dress, does nothing for her. It’s the color of a raisin, and would probably work on someone else (drawing a blank on who).

I think she looks great, especially given the context. I like when actors don’t try desperately hard to be in the spotlight when it’s not their rightful turn. But I too have never ‘felt’ her. I don’t think she’s a great actress by any means, and certainly lost any fondness for her when she came out in support of Roman Polanski and got preachy with the veganism. Still, it’s hard to argue with the fact that she’s gorgeous.

  17. megan

yeah I never really felt the natalie thing, I mean she was great in black swan but everything else is a bit meh like her clothing. This is okay & her waist looks tiny! which is a plus but its overall really meh…… nothing fantastic!!

I actually MUCH prefer this to her Golden Globes dress, which I thought was a little too high school prom-esque. I love the rich colour of this one, and it seems to drape her a bit better than the hot pink heavy satin from last week.

Thank you!! Natalie Portman is BORING. She’s not drop dead gorgeous. She has that GOOPy “I’m superior to everyone and something smells bad” face most of the time. Yawn.

  23. Deanna

This is not snoozy at all – i think her dress is gorgeous, and looks great on her!

The brown is lovely – beats the washed-out dreck we’ve seeing too much of lately.

As for N. Port, I think of her as the neighbor I’d invite to book club once but wouldn’t ask back as she came across as a little smug and humor-impaired; and, unlike my other girlfriends, she didn’t drink enough to make herself an interesting guest.

I don’t like the boob bustle (what a great description!) and also the hair is a bit severe for my liking but otherwise its fine. Fine is not really what you want to look on a night out though is it??

  26. Lisa

I disagree– I think she looks fabulous. She looks so much better than she did in the too-big at the Globes. And I love the little diamond pocketbook. I also love the earrings, which don’t stand out as much in the photo as they did when she was on stage. My take on Natalie is that she’s so caught up in motherhood that her head is probably there rather than at the awards shows.

    • Lisa

I left out “gown” — oops– I meant the too-big gown at the Globes.

What’s with all the Natalie haters here? She’s a wonderful actress, a classic beauty and she picks great movies to act in, for the most part. She seems to behave like a normal human being in her private life, so what’s with the hateful comments about her behavior?

    • Sajorina
      0

I agree, but apparently some people have nothing better to do than be mean and hateful towards others!

      • Megan
        0

I don’t think everyone is hateful rather they don’t find her overly interesting which she should be as she is attractive/ educated/ talented/ successful yet for some un known reason she come off a little boring

      • Kit
        0

I think lots of “attractive/ educated/ talented/ ” people are boring – people who are happy are boring, for the most part. THEY enjoy their lives, but it’s not very interesting for the rest of us to watch, and Natalie’s a great example. She has a successful career w/out that came w/out gossip mongering or ridiculous PR moves, she’s (we assume) happily married, with a new baby at home. None of that is in the least. bit. interesting unless you’re Natalie Portman.

        I say, good for her!

(Although I was NOT a fan of her “Black Swan” performance. Barbra Hershey was great in it, and Mila was fun to watch, but I found the movie as a whole a snoozefest and Natalie’s performance quite unremarkable.)

She looks pretty and I like the dress (a very pretty color), but it is maybe a bit snoozy, though. I can’t help but love her though– she’s so pretty.

Agree with the Robot comment. I always want her to make me feel something, anything. So much potential, wasted.

  30. Dru

I think part of why this dress looks feh is that it’s the de-pregged younger sister of her Oscars dress from last year.

I mean, the colour is pretty but it’s such a snooze, and the cabbage on her left tit doesn’t help matters.

Well, she’s just a kind of wooden actress – terrible in Star Wars, terrible in Closer. And CONDESCENDING in interviews, oh, my god. I feel you, Jessica.

  33. Tinufer

She’s a brand new mom! When planning for this event, she probably told her assistant/stylist: ” Never mind, I don’t want to fit all those dresses and choose. I leave it up to you. Pick the safest one, and oh, could you pick up some diapers and some baby tylenol on your way over here? “

I saw a different photo and the dress was much more red, a deep burgundy that was much prettier. And Natalie had a beautiful expression on her face, and I thought she was a shoo-in for best dressed. But with a different photo….

    • Josephinee

Me too! When I saw another picture of this I thought it was absolutely fabulous, so imagine my surprise when I came to gfy. It looks more blah here, but I still think it’s a nice dress.

  35. Chris

When I saw her close up during the show, her eyes looked bloodshot and the lighting was not flattering or something. She looked like she had been crying or was up all night with the baby.

  36. Kate

This is one of her loveliest presentations ever. The dress is beautiful – evenly draped, rich color, beautiful asymmetrical line across the front, lovely flow top and bottom. She has never looked better. Although her facial expression is off, she looks very comfortable overall. Normally her dresses are stiff, not cut to her build and too avante-garde for her personality, making her look trapped in a concoction that is overpowering her. This is simple and elegant and she wears it beautifully.

  37. Franziska

I never understood the hype with Natalie Portman either. I’m sure she’s a lovely person, but she just bores me a bit. So do her fashion choices.

I’m gonna say it– Natalie Portman could sleep in my bed any day. I’m glad I don’t have as many competitors as I thought. WOO! (aside from her husband…)

I love Natalie. Yes, the Star Wars films are horrid, but everyone was horrid in those. That’s bad script + bad directing + bad acting from all concerned. Watch her in “Beautiful Girls,” or “Garden State”. She’s fantastic in those movies. And I think she’s absolutely beautiful.

She’s the new Winona Ryder. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, can’t act her way out of a paper bag. Unlike Winona, she’s also boring. Hate the boob flower.

I have been mystified by her popularity for years.

She looks beautiful, ladylike, and perfect. Remember when that was the standard?
This dress is flattering, with a lovely, rich color; she has sparkling, pretty accessories; flattering hair and makeup. Why must everything be a statement? Better yet: What if the statement is that everything doesn’t have to be a statement?

Totally agree. I haven’t actually seen Natalie Portman in that many things, so my opinion of her as an actress is fairly neutral, but that is a gorgeous ensemble, in a very understated, elegant way. Boob flower and all. :)

What I just don’t understand is why she put so much effort and looked so fabulous last year making the rounds while hugely pregnant? I mean if you want to take a year off, that’s the year everyone gives you a pass.

I’m a total sucker for chocolate brown. I like this dress, her waist looks tiny and it’s flowy and elegant. A necklace would have been a nice touch since it’s strapless and her hair is so severe.

I love this deep burgundy colour! She does have a bit of an obsession with fancying up her boob region though…bi-colour, turnover fabric, assorted fabric roses. The detail is often up on her chest.

It is all pretty MEH, and I actually understand the Fug girl’s feelings on Natalie Portman. To me, she is very, very, very lovely but with next to no sex appeal. Reminds me of Audrey Hepburn with the way she looks (never seen an actual Hepburn movie, so I’ve no idea which is a better actress).
