Royals Round-Up, August 15th, 2014

EVERYONE is on vacation. Even the Queen. This week’s royals round-up DOES bring you some snaps from Crown Princess Mary and family’s official visit to Greenland, however, and that means one thing: fur pants on children. To make up for the paucity of royals sightings this week, I threw in some additional Harry shots from his outing this week where he was cavorting about in a slim-fitting polo and nuzzling a dog.

Also! It’s Princess Anne’s birthday. I hope she catches a MURDERER today in her own honor. Here are her archives as a celebration.

Elsewhere, I can bring you further delights:

Wow, I got six of those royal bottoms correct – that’s disturbing, why do I know what these people’s behinds look like??

I have to say that both Charles & Will surprised me with the quality of their bums… Guess Harry shares a genetic pool with them after all. And Baby George is precious from any angle.

I share this trait so I don’t mean offense, but wow, what a collection of flat bottoms.

It’s been my experience, as a full-blooded WASP, that our bottoms go either completely flat or totally bubble-butted. Oh, how I wished for a flat bottom in my youth! But now, in light of the Kardashians, I am amazed how small my old ass is.

I got nine and I’m not even a huge royal watcher. It’s more about guessing who wears the clothes.

I LOVE Princess Josephine! She’s got sass. There are some gifs going around Tumblr of some engagement they were all at where the kids had to go down the line shaking dozens of adults hands, and Josie was half-assing it like she was already SO OVER IT and then at the end, gave a total hair flip and rolled her eyes. She’s THREE years old. Her and Estelle need to be BFFs.

Speaking of BFFs, Kate and Mary did meet a while back soon after the wedding, but from pictures I’ve seen, the meeting didn’t come off very well. There seemed to be tension and like they didn’t like each other. SCANDAL. I wish I knew why. Maybe Kate was nervous, it was soon after the wedding. I don’t know. It just totally looked like Mary was the senior being forced to socialize with a puny freshman girl by her parents or something.

It was quite a random meeting – William and Kate went to Unicef Denmark during the East African drought/food crisis in 2011. Both Mary and Fred are patrons of organizations that deal with such issues (Refugee Councils and the Danish Red Cross) and were very knowledgeable. William did quite well with the press but Kate bombed it – incorrect facts, incomplete sentences, etc. I know it seems insignificant but she also turned down a sample of nutritional supplements that are sent to the refugee camps and that was what the whole visit turned out to be about. Neither Kate or William have followed through with anything similar in the following three years, so it appears to have been a one-off. Not to project on Mary and Fred, but I’d be/am less than impressed.

      • Nancy
        +8

I don’t think Kate is anything approaching a rocket scientist, and I doubt she is at all intellectual, as her family doesn’t seem like big thinkers, but to be fair, even smart people might get tripped up in a situation like that. You really would have to be prepped on this, I think, before getting out there and talking about it.

(Now before anyone gets their panties in a bunch over how much I “hate” Kate, I don’t think she is stupid, I think she’s just not possessed of a burning curiousity about the world. She doesn’t come across like Princess Ann does, very smart and knowledgeable.)

Well, she did zero with her degree after leaving university, except to work for about two seconds as a buyer with Jigsaw, a clothing store in the UK. That was only because her mother is friends with the owners. She farted around for almost ten years waiting for William to marry her. Is it any wonder she is held in fairly low esteem over here in the UK.

Speaking of the royals, did you see this SNL sketch about the Royal Gynecologist? It’s pretty hilarious watching Bill Hader try not to crack up at the different names they have for Kate’s… ahem. http://dailypicksandflicks.com/2012/12/16/snl-royal-family-doctor-video/

I do hate to admit this, because yesterday I confessed to seeing sperm on Olga Kurylenko’s dress, but I read Slide 10 as having Harry say “I’m just gonna poop over here…” and then I laughed…and then got concerned about what might happen on Harry’s next drunken Vegas bender.

“Cute, but schluby” is perfect for CP Fredrik. He cleans up nice, but most days need Garanimals for Men.

    •  lacondesainvierno

That should be a thing, especially for casual wear. The label could just say GAM to preserve their dignity. But plenty of men these days are probably wore Garanimals as children and would welcome the brand.

The little prince even had a mini version. They look like they are on backwards. The rest of the Danish Royal family’s attire is wonderful, and the scenery is great.

    • kcc

Are they a Danish thing we don’t know about?

    • Nanna
      +2

They’re not ponchos, they’re anoraks – traditional outerwear from Greenland. Traditionally made of fur but now its made with modern, outdoor/winter wear fabrics. They remind me a bit of the 80′s (wore them as a kid, in bright colors as far as I can remember), but they’re mostly used for outdoor activities such ass hiking etc now. (I’m Danish)

  14.  Charlotte
    +31

I can help with the “Why is Fred wearing a hoodie” question.

Anoraks are universal menswear in Greenland – developed from the garment that they wore hunting.

The white version is considered formal wear – so at the big fancy dinner Mary was wearing a long dress (with what looked to be a wool lace shawl) and Fred had on the white anorak and black trousers, with his orders and medals. (Mary had on her order star as well, below her bust.)

Love the variants in Greenlandic dress that the family was wearing. But it looks like it was a very long event for the twins.

    • Jessica
      +2

Oh, interesting! I (obviously) had no idea, but I (also obviously) assumed one of you guys would be able to enlighten. That is fascinating.

    • Anna
      +15

Exactly! It’s not that he’s half-assing how he’s dressed – he’s actually dressing quite respectfully and diplomatically. None of the “she’s wearing beige which is close to white which is the color of peace” that was all over the news when Kate went to Belgium.

Frederik has a really great relationship with Greenland and there was a documentary made about their trip during which Mary talked about how touched she is when Greenland calls her their daughter-in-law. Fair play to those kids – they were seen and did public engagements for six days out of a week-long trip. I get the feeling that they’ll grow up to be some hardworking adult royals as well.

When a 7 year old dresses more stylishly than you (me), it’s time to rethink your sartorial choices…

  16. Henriette
    +20

As a dane I feel the need to come to the defence of our very hot crown prince and his style on this trip. The male version of the Greenlandic national garb is unfortunately not quite as colourful and awesome as the female version that CPM is wearing. It is, in fact, an anorak. That’s it for the guys. The different colours depend on the region.

  17. Anna
    +30

argh, I hate to be like this, but CPM is NOT wearing a sweater. It is the female anorak, and the multicolored pattern is a beaded collar. It weighs a ton. The anorak is trimmed with black sealskin and beads on the cuffs. This is sort of a sore subject to teenage me, who hated the weight of it when I had to wear one.
CPF( and Vincent) is wearing a anorak which is traditional clothing in Greenland, and blue anoraks were traditionally formal wear.
I like to add that the children are wearing different traditional clothes from every part of the country: CPM, CPF and Christian is in West Greenlandic dress, the twins in polar bear pants from the north and Josephine is in Eastern Greenlandic dress.

The trip to Greenland seems like the royal version of “They’re Just Like Us!” in that each child got to take a turn melting down. I hope Mary and Frederik were able to laugh about it.

Whilst I love the Cambridges and Prince Harry unreservedly, I do wonder why all their good pals seem to own high end bar or sell sex toys (one of Kate’s pre wedding pals) or plan parties… . Does anyone teach or doctor or farm? IT’s like Crome Yellow or a Waugh novel… no one ends up in a good place.

The stereotype is that aristos are dim and that they tend to become estate agents, restauranteurs, wedding/party planners and not doctors or lawyers. That is partially true and partially not true. There are posh people who are intelligent and have professional jobs (Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Dan Snow etc) but the really rich aristos don’t need to put in the hours to become doctors or lawyers.

Vacation Letizia has several pairs of harem pants. It’s not often that you get to see her in flat sandals since Felipe is like 6’5″ or something. If you can find it on the Internet, you really have to see these pictures of Albert, Charlene and Princess Caroline rocking out at some concert the year before the wedding, when everyone was happy. Princess Caroline looks seriously cracked out.

I got 8 bums right. I should be distressed that I missed dear Philip’s, but I can only do so much with a side view.

Letizia should always wear harem pants! I swear, they look fantastic on her and instantly make me wish I were as slender so I could look that good.

Harry’s self-butt-grab. I have theories. 1) he’s either worried he’s sat in something, 2) he’s worried he’s sweating so much it’s made his bottom damp, or 3) he’s very afraid his flatulence has presence.

In sort of royal news, has anyone seen the announcement that E is making a scripted show about a fake Royal British family, and that Joan Collins will be starring as a grand Duchess? Never thought I’d watch an “E” channel show but I am sorely tempted.

OMG the teeny-tiny yak fur pants. (I’m guessing that it’s yak.) Hah!

  26. Lesley

As Anna has said, the “sweater” is actually a beaded collar made from thousands of glass beads known in Greenland as “pearls”. National costume is worn for many occasions, particularly for important events such as the very first day children start school, and for confirmation. They are fabulous to see from a close distance.

I got way too many of the butts right. I missed Princess Michael’s and Lady Gabriella’s, but I made up for it by knowing Lady Helen’s. I think they kind of cheated by throwing Fergie in there, but I did get her. Her terrible taste in clothes always gives her away.

Nice to see Sadface looking…almost not sad. Sven must have told her a joke right before those pictures were taken.

The little Danish princes and princess are ADORABLE. You know Josephine is going to be hell-raiser when she’s older.

The Danish children are really cute. We need more of Prince George. Do William and Kate not take him out that much?

    • Jessica
      +6

I know he’s taken to the park a fair bit but there aren’t always pictures. (William apparently takes him out before the park is technically open, which is probably smart if they want to avoid curious eyeballs; there were photos of him and Kate at Kensington Gardens, and him and the nanny there as well, recently.) I know he goes swimming weekly at Buck House, too, but of course that’s not photographed. I imagine they’re trying really hard to avoid getting caught in a paps crush with him, esp. when he’s still small.

How embarrassing – I got Harry, William, Camilla, Fergie, the Queen, the daughter of Fergie, Princess Ann and the horse riding lady right, but only because she was wearing riding pants. And Baby George. I need a life, I think.

I hope the fur on that other baby is fake – I am sure it is, but if it wasn’t, yeech. I hate the fur of creatures that used to be alive, and to put it on kids is so wrong.

She looks like a well maintained mum, he looks like a tired dad. The kids look so adorable. I still remember when Prince Christian came to Australia as a toddler and he was just the cutest thing ever.

I don’t think they appear in public often but the Japanese prince Hisahito is freaking cute too.

What a silly comment on the clothes the Danish crownprince wears in Greenland. It’s a traditional ‘anorak’, worn by local men. His grandfather, king Frederik the Ninth wore the same gear, and his father, prince Henrik, too, out of courtesy to the people of Greenland.

    • Jessica
