Recent Fugs and Mostly Fabs: Reese Witherspoon

Let’s check in with Reese. SPOILER: She looks totally polished. I sort of wish she’d roll up to the valet in cut-offs and a coconut bra, just to shake us out of it.

I think that third dress looks shrunken on her. The waist seems too high, the skirt is too short. But I love that first look.

AGREED. That is a thing, though. I can’t tell you how many dresses I’ve tried on in the last year or so that were absolute winners, except for the waistline hitting me in the ribcage, and so sadly I had to put them back. I am on the short side and not even particularly long-waisted, so I can’t understand why these dresses even exist. NO ONE’S WAIST IS IMMEDIATELY UNDER HER BOOBS.

      • Kristabelle
        +7

Yes! It’s especially problematic if you have big boobs to begin with. Not a good look. It’s quite dismaying to try on dresses that fit like that!!

I thought that short women were the only ones who had any hope of looking okay in those short-skirted, short-waisted dresses. I’m tall, and they make me look like I wandered into the Petites department by mistake, or the girls’.

And I just want to say how much I love the first outfit, with the print skirt and white shirt. In the past I’ve criticized her for dressing too young, but this is perfect. It’s girly without being girlish, if that makes any sense.

            +2

Nope, I’m short and they make me look shorter and stumpier. Short waists are of the devil.

And I too love that first outfit. Love it. I wish I could wear those snug white button downs but my boobs always gape open the buttons.

        +1

i agree. i’m not even that tall and those dresses are too short on me. i can’t wait till they are out of style!

That blue and white dress is from some random Chinese website and is like $15 or something ridiculous. I’ve seen it featured on some fashion blogs I follow… I think Reese and I follow the same blogs from the looks of her outfits lately. That dress weirdly comes in One Size Fits All, which clearly it WOULD NOT.

        +7

I just came here to say that! I know someone who owns that dress, its $17 on SheInside.com – it looks all wonky fitted on her as well. The waist isn’t fitted enough and hits at a weird spot, and it’s too short. But hey, if anyone wants to be Reese Witherspoon for $17, that’s now an option, at least.

Shockingly there’s some cute stuff on there. Not so shockingly there is a whole lotta WTF happening as well.

          • Helena
            +2

Just a warning: proceed with caution if you decide to buy from Sheinside. I know some people have no problems, but I bought a two items from there earlier in the year and it was just the WORST. The top arrived quite quickly (and was pretty but terrible quality), but after five weeks, they still hadn’t even shipped the dress, and their customer service department is absolutely awful. Eventually had to open a Paypal dispute to get my money back. So, you know, buyer beware and all that.

            • Helena
              +7

Love that as soon as I write that, I immediately start getting bombarded with Sheinside ads on every page I visit. Oh no, Sheinside, don’t try to woo me back with your deceptively attractive, extreme static cling polyester clothing. I haven’t forgotten.

Having recently lived in Asia, I can attest that a lot of clothes come in one size, and that size is Tiny. Then again, so are the people buying them — I’m 5’1″ and wear a size S in the US, but I was on the taller side in Malaysia, and bought Ms and Ls (when available).

Oh Reese in #3, why be A Little Teapot when you’re not?

As for #1: Pretty much the suburban mom version of Taylor Swift (“not that there’s anything wrong with that!”).

And here’s to the great E-Z shots in the arm: Sunglasses and red lipstick (and red coats in season)

      • LT

I was going to see she looks like an overgrown baby in slide three, but “little teapot” is much better.

It looks like your new gallery format is cutting off the feet! Other than that, very nice! Reese also looks very nice!

    •  Robyn
      +3

Ah, I’m not the only one not seeing feet in the slide show.

I want it all! Although, I would add a few inches to the last dress.

Love all of the ‘fits. The first one could use a YELLOW bag and I’ve seen plenty of knock-offs of that last dress (http://www.sheinside.com/White-Sleeveless-Porcelain-Print-Flare-Dress-p-160163-cat-1727.html?ref=cj)

  4.  Trace

In like the first and last outfits, although the white dress needs to be a tad longer to carry off that volume without making the wearer look thick-waisted.

The pants look like something Letizia would steal for her working vacation. She should steal the red lip too!

Okay, this has nothing to do with Reese, but I had to warn Fug Nation of the horror that is about to befall us. Stella has designed a pair of tapered stirrup pants. I wish I was kidding. Someone will inflict them upon us. Any guesses?

If they came in gold stretch lame, I’d say Kim Kardashian. But if they’re only in basic black, well….. Lindasy? Whoops, no — they’re pants.

      Im seriously horrified.

    •  LoriK

I’m really starting to feel serious resentment toward Stella McCartney and her ugly ass clothes. Stirrup pants should not be making a come back. I lived through them once and I don’t deserve to go through that again.

As for who will wear them, does Kim K wear Stella? Tapered stirrup pants seem like her kind of tasteless. They’re on a similar level to those gawd awful flowered hell spawn pants she wore when she was pregnant.

      •  Miranda
        +3

I don’t think Stella is high brow enough for Kim. She wears/ruins Parisian designers almost exclusively.

        I bet Goopy wears them.

      Unsolicited Red Lipstick Advice:

High – Chanel Rouge Allure, $35 – so shiny and chic, #98 and #104 are great

Mid – Tarte LipSurgence stain in Fiery, $24 or gloss in “Natural Beauty”, $19 — the gloss has glitter FYI.

Low – Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in “Always Red”, $13 – it 100% does not move.

Carry on, Fug Nationals and/or chime in since I LOVE a red lip.

No clue why this is under the Stella comment… but NO STELLAAAAA.

My red lipstick recommendation is Bite’s Tannin (Poppy red). It is made in Toronto, pthalate and paraben- and gluten-free, super-moisturising, and stays on your lips forever. Love it. They carry it at Sephora as well as in their lip lab in New York (SOHO).

My personal favorite red lipstick: Marc Jacobs in Surrender Dorothy. The name ALONE grabbed me, and I was thrilled when the color looked much better on me than I expected it to.

Oh god, of course Stella. Of course. But I think Liv Tyler would fight Goop for them.

And I think everyone should know that the Kate Moss (friend of Stella! tying the thread together) for Rimmel red lipsticks are actually amazing. I might own four of them.

Reese reminds of every sorority girl I went to college with! It’s a very Southern lady look … and as a Southern lady, I approve.

My fave red lipstick– Mac Red. Long-lasting, satin finish, works on most skin tones and fades to a flattering shade of pink.

Also Tom Ford’s red are GORGEOUS but so $$$.

Also NARS Red Lizard is an awful name but a great shade.

The Ford colors are beautiful, but some users say the lipsticks are drying. That’s a word that gets an instant “no” from me when I’m reading reviews of a lip product I’m considering buying. Half the point of a good lipstick should be so you DON’T need lip balm!

I have a pair of black wedges I bought at Target that look exactly like hers.

    I love the skirt. Cute.

Exceedingly fond of her glasses in the first pic. They look great on her. And that outfit is marvy!

I wish that person behind her was not there. It looks like she has a third shorter leg. I can’t unsee it. :o

Love the first look. Fresh and kicky (I don’t know why “kicky” but that adjective jumped out at me so I went with it.) The second is “meh” and the third dress looks to me like she accidentally wore one of Ava’s dresses. Additionally, while I always appreciate a woman who wears a hat, I don’t think a fedora is the right shape for her.

I love the skirt in the first slide, but those pants in the second slide… Reese is a shorty like me. Those pants are not our friend. They are in fact our mortal enemy.

The first outfit is so flipping cute, I love it. The dress is in the last slide is cute, but too short and not fitted enough in the waist.

Yeah, yeah, she looks fine, but same question as with Taylor Swift and her fashion/purse parade. Do they ever work? I’m sure they do, but it just looks as if their main job is going in and out of places holding a purse.

In Reese’s defense, I know she’s producing like NINE things right now, so she probably DOES have a lot of meetings places.

I’ll take Reese and her nine projects with large bag any day, before I settle for Taylor leaving the Gym Salon (where we all get our hair/clothing/gym needs met under one roof).

All pretty much Fab, I think, except the blue-and-white looks to be cut for a child’s shape. Its fabric, however, is gorgeous.

I know the middle look is not everyone’s fave, but I am a sucker for a nice, relaxed t-shirt. that one is probably out of my price range, but I’d love to know where it’s from!

And speaking as someone who just flew from coast to coast in yoga pants with a paint stain on the side, she looks a hella lot better than I ever will in an airport.

  22.  Steph
    +1

First look is divine. As is the second look, but I have an irrational hatred of celebs wearing sunglasses in airports. In a nutshell: when I was a child, I saw a D-list celeb (married to an at the time A-list singer) at an airport, IN THE LOUNGE, wearing sunglasses. She then put them on the second she exited the plane, despite the fact she was in a terminal for about an hour.

    •  HelenBackAgain
      0

Well, that WAS obnoxious, so I get it! But when you’re as distinctive-looking as Reese Witherspoon, covering a lot of your face just makes it possible to get where you’re going.

      •  Steph
        +6

I think it almost draws more attention to you though. 99% of us are not wearing sunglasses inside the terminals, so when you see them, you’re drawn to finding out who it is (especially at LAX).

Also, D-list actress’ mother was with her. Wearing a full length fur coat. And had a martini. At 8am. Come to think of it, that was kind of awesome. (The martini, not the fur.)

        •  HelenBackAgain

Ha! I might kind of love her mother.

Lisa Hartman Black. She is married to country singer Clint Black. This was about 1989 or so. Lisa was popular in LIfetime Movies of the Week.

Small note: I think her lipstick in the second slide is most definitely pink. As are her toenails. Regardless, it’s fab.

  25.  Joanie

I really like all the looks. The casual airport look is comfy and style has style.

The last dress reminds me of the high-low dress Cat Deely wore to the Creative Arts Emmys.

i could never pull off the preppiness of that first outfit, but it is divine on her.

  28. Veronica
    +2

I actually like all three outfits a lot, though I think the third dress could be fitted a tad better. I’m also cheerleading for you to jump on the red lipstick bandwagon, Jessica. JOIN US. Smeared wine glasses for all! (A few recs from my personal collection and experience: Urban Decay F-Bomb, Guerlain Rouge G in Garconne [timeless luxury - the price tag is worth it!], Chanel Rouge Allure in Pirate, Lipstick Queen Red Sinner. If you want a few lower-end shades to toss in your bag without a care, try Maybelline’s Red Revolution or Revlon’s classic Fire and Ice.)

Disregarding my rational hate of her, she looks good in the first pic. The second picture doesn’t even look like her, and I hate that third dress on her. It’s like way too small, or something. And young.
