First, I love that the current ads on your page are for the Kia with the floating astronaut baby and panda cub.

Second, I find this whole outing so charming – a trip to the subway with your husband’s Grandmother is a hoot even if she isn’t the queen. Glad to see her Majesty is feeling better after her bout with GI ickiness.

Oh my she looks so fantastic with that fuller face. I hope she never gets skinny minny again.

I just can’t get over how cute Kate and the Queen are together. Their coats even have coordinating sparkly trim!

not sure who is cuter, the Queen or the Duchess. Well played!

Of course she’s intrigued, the Queen usually just apparates wherever she needs to go…. I half expect her to go through the turnstyle backwards, a la Mr. Weasley…

The coordinated coats kill me. Love these two together.

Once again, I love Kate’s coat.

The Queen scares me. She reminds me a lot of my grandma…who scares me.

Nice to see QE2 out and about – though she shouldn’t look so surprised since HER grandmother’s lady-in-waiting took her and Princess Margaret on the ‘Tube when they were kids in the ’30s.

Kate looks so cute – love her hat, coat, and that pin is awesome (but I bet she and Wils have a drawer at home for all the kitchy stuff people are going to give her now that she’s preggers). Girlfriend should start investing in some good flat shoes/flat boots because those heels are going to be hellacious to wear once that bebe goes into a serious growth spurt.

Yeah, but she should wait on buying the flats until she needs to – she may well need a different shoe size by then.

I like it, but I am bored of winter Kate and ready for her to embrace Spring. Florals, bright colors, NO TIGHTS, etc – spring has sprung! (except in new england where it is still snowing and miz – although I’ve been wearing bright colors this week anyways!)

    • Edith

I suspect spring hasn’t even thought of springing yet in London.

There’s no spring here in the UK. It’s supposed to snow this weekend. I don’t blame Kate in the slightest for wrapping up warmly.

I really like how these two do appearances together. I read this was a sort of last-minute decision on Kate’s part, and for some reason I just love it that the Queen invited her.

I always wondered what it’s like when regular folk have to explain basic things to royalty. I think it’s like this: “This is an iron, see, and it gets hot and you can smooth out your clothes.” “Do go on and tell me more about this magical thing.”

As a Londoner who is using London public transport every day it slightly annoys me how far removed the Royals are from reality. Yup, the Tube is what the majority of Londoners deal with on a daily basis to be able to live in and get around London. Nice you are finally being introduced to it too Queen.

On a sidenote Kate’s coat is cute.

I have a feeling that this is much like George H.W. Bush and the infamous grocery scanner over here. I’m sure she knows plenty about the subway, but she’s required to be there and look polite and interested. What else are you supposed to do but smile and nod when someone’s telling you about a scanner or a turnstile?

The Queen looks extraordinarily good, even for her, and I usually think she looks good. That coat is to die for, and perfectly accessorized.

Kate looks nice, too, love that blue, but in this harsh light, I’m reminded how much I don’t like the hard-looking way she does her make-up and brows. It’s crude. Please, Kate, you’re married to the future King now, get a make-up artist. You can still do it yourself, and I love that you do that, just WATCH and LEARN with an expert first.

Totally agree Kate seems a bit wistful about the train. Well, she did know what she was getting into… still, it must be hard at times.

Wistful is the last thing that I would be if someone told me I never had to ride the tube again.

I agree with all points, Helen. I get that she probably uses more makeup than most because she knows she’ll be photographed, etc., but it’s just way too much, especially in closeups.

I can see how she’s wistful, too. OK, maybe it’s not so much “Oh, I can’t ride the Tube ever again,” but maybe “This is just one more thing I’ll never be able to do again.”

The Queen’s bemusement with the subway reminds of of Prince Charles trying to figure out what an iron is. Remember when he and Kate ironed together? That was priceless.

When I see photos of the queen carrying a purse, I get so curious! What do you think is in it? Tissues? Or would she carry a cloth hanky (remember those)? Lipstick? Photos of her grandchildren? I wonder if she even needs keys. Does the queen have an iPhone?

    • Helen
      0

Remember them? I carry one! Silk hankies are the best. Very soft and gentle if you need to wipe eyes or blow nose, and they leave no lint.

I’d guess the Queen has one, too. And a lipstick, maybe a comb. Mints. Face powder.

It’s weird to picture her with a smartphone, somehow, but why not? She might have one of those, too.

The Queen has taken the Tube before, it’s just been a while. :)

Also, I love that your caption is basically what Kate apparently said to one of the Tube officials giving them the tour — she basically said she used to take the Tube all the time, but now she couldn’t because of her “position.” I legitimately felt sad for her because, yeah, her comings and goings are pretty circumscribed now.

Looking forward to seeing the “Baby on Board” pin displayed with the Crown Jewels in 50 years from now.

Just picture it: 500 carat diamand tiara… novelty pin… 300 carat emerald encrusted staff…

Sounds like precisely the kind of thing that would really spruce up the Tower of London exhibit anyway. Regular crown jewel exhibit? Meh. Crown Jewel/Novelty Pin exhibit? Definitely.

Curious- is Kate pretty much required to wear a hat in public, as she is the royal line of succession? I often, but not always, see her in hats outside. Of course, maybe she just loves a good hat occasion, as we all do, of course.

They both look great! I imagine the Tube has changed a lot since the Queen last rode it.

Does the Tube have those pins in general for pregnant ladies? If so, that’s a great idea. I could have saved some passive-aggressive throat-clearing when I was pregnant if I had one of those babies on the CTA.

    • Kristina

So I don’t know if the UK does this, but in Switzerland they have those pins, and if a woman is wearing one (you can apply for it as soon as you know you’re pregnant – like you present your first sonogram…to someone) you HAVE to get up or you go to jail or something along those lines. Switzerland is genuinely awesome like that.

    • EmmaGH
      0

Yes! Every pregnant woman I know wears one. It’s especially handy for those who have to use the Tube every day but aren’t showing (but ARE feeling 100% for real preggers).

Her majesty was visiting the Underground. It would be unreasonable to expect someone of her age to walk through a pedestrian tunnel beneath a major thoroughfare (aka a subway.)

Please tell me those are not Kate’s ratty cuticles in the close up of the pin?!? One of the best perks of princessitude must be manicures-on-demand, right?!?

    • Joemama
      0

I’m thinking “no”. She’s wearing gloves in the rest of the pictures. However, if the London winter has been anywhere near as harsh as the winter here in Minnesota, no amount of manicures would completely un-rattify your cuticles.

Aw, the Queen reminds me of my grandma, whom I miss dearly! And Kate is just PERFECTION in this outfit, pin included!
