2012 Retrospective: The Year in Prince Harry

Merry Christmas! I got you a compendium of everything Prince Harry did this year. Okay, except for the nude photos. You can just imagine those yourself.

Is he the cutest or what? I can’t believe I was in college when he was born because I will forever be too old for him. Sigh.

Even Diana admitted it was Harry was the one to keep an eye on, not Wills. I hope he finds a really amazing woman with a lot of life in her, and a sense of both duty and great humor. I heard he fed the troops yesterday in Afghanistan. Pictures, please, of Harry in a Santa hat manning the buffet line!

I have a ridiculously large soft spot for Harry (and his brother and sister-in-law, as well). I’m now sporting a sappy smile and a warm heart, which is a good thing on this wet and dreary work day. Thank you for a such a nice post-Christmas present!

I nominate Kate and Harry for the British Syncronised Pointing Team.

Thanks the post-holiday pickmeup. Just when you think you’ve had all the sweet meats you can stand. . . along comes Harry.

Also, the last picture, why have we not seen more of that red dress????

I wonder if he’s totally relieved that he’s been bumped on the way to the throne by the Royal Bump? Because now he doesn’t have people saying “You can’t do that, you may be king some day!” Now they’re all “Eh. Whatevs. Just keep your trousers zipped at official events and we’re happy.”

Thank you, ladies, that was a lovely post-Christmas present. He is so adorable. Too bad I’m old enough to be his mother. And I do think he might be just a little bit in love with his sister-in-law.

Thank you for bringing me a prince on a BIG WHITE HORSE before the end of the year. This definitely makes up for EVERYTHING else.

You’ve posted too many photos that clearly show Harry’s unrequited love for Kate for me not to believe. It fills me with sadness. It makes me want to comfort him… preferably while he’s wearing the tux and shades…

I know, right? I’m sure he actually is just really fond of her, but maybe it’s just our own fault for trying to make up a story of unrequited love. So it’s never just a picture of him looking at her – it’s REALLY that’s he looking at her longingly and she’s wondering if she married the right brother.

Here is the picture that convinced me of his unrequited love:

It really surprises me to see members of the Royal Family pointing their fingers like that. I’m sure they’d never point at a person, but it’s pretty vulgar all the same. Royalty isn’t what it used to be…

But Harry and Kate’s chumminess is adorable. They’re like siblings!

And showing the Prince on a white horse was hilarious.

    • Kat
      0

They’re at sporting events. They’re probably just trying to follow play. I’m pretty sure there’s nothing vulgar about that.

    • Faye

Helen, maybe it’s the outcome of being raised by “old-world” European parents, but my instant reaction to seeing those pics was “Finger-pointing! Gasp! Really, Harry.” Then I thought, eh, compared to the whole Nazi uniform wearing thing and the naked Vegas pics thing, pointing is probably the least vulgar thing Harry’s done lately :) .

Also, can I just say that those adorable kids sticking their tongues out at Harry in pic 26 (?) are my new heroes.

    • andervue

I never thought of that. I used to work for a very fancy five star resort and we were told to NEVER point. Too gauche.

after looking at all these photos it is clear as a summer sunny day Harry and Kate are having an illicit affair. How scandalous! Sun glasses and cute coats are everywhere!
I love Harry, but not in a top hat. That is just wrong, no one should be subjected to wear such a tall hat.

Am I the only one that remembers that Harry calls people racist names like “paki” and “raghead”, or that he dresses up as a Nazi for giggles? Sorry, not cute.

    • Scully
      0

I wish I could take back a lot of the stupid things I said when I was his age. I’m not excusing his words, they were horrid, but he did apologie and it appears he’s growing into a gentleman.

      • Kris
        0

Sure he did. He apologized for smoking pot, then wore a Nazi uniform. He apologized for the outfit, then turned around and called people racist names. He apologized for that, he’s naked in a hotel room. He’s not actually sorry for anything, judging by the way he keeps behaving the same way. And that is definitely not hot. I wish the Fug Girls would quit drooling over this creep.

        • Faye
          0

Bingo to everything in this post, Kris. I can’t really speak to the whole Nazi unform incident because, as a granddaughter of an Auschwitz survivor, someone whose grandparents lost practically their entire famillies in the Holocaust, there’s no way for me to evaluate that objectively. But the “Paki” and “towelhead” comments? I can unequivocally say that was horrible. And he said those things when he was already an adult, not a teenager or something.

I’m really mystified by the number of people who are willing to give him a pass on that. I wonder if a random young non-royal American man of the same age (or even some American, non-royal celeb) had said those comments, would he be excused and fawned over in the same way Harry is? Doubtful.

        • Scully
          0

I am also a granddaughter of an Auschwitz survivor victim. Somehow a Nazi uniform as a Halloween costume just doesn’t upset me. Like I said, it is easy to do something stupid and regretful. Until I know Prince Harry personally (hey, it could happen! you never know!) I will reserve my judgment.

      • Trace
        0

Oh please, I know 13 year olds who know it’s wrong to use the words ‘raghead’ and ‘Paki’ and would also never dress up as a Nazi to go to a ‘Colonials and Natives’ (WTF does that even mean?) party. Harry was in his twenties when he did all this – more than old enough to know better.

        • Henry9
          0

No, he did not do these things as a grown up. The party was in his teens, and amazing how many people give the party giver a pass for having such a themed party because you can bet all the other party people were equally offensively dressed. FYI a ‘colonials and natives’ party is a them on dressing like a native or a colonialist of the countries that were colonised by Britain. Harry was wearing the uniform of the German African Korps.

As for the paki and raghead comments, stop pearl clutching and listen to the guy he called thus. The guy says entire regiment called him that. HE wasn’t offended and didn’t think it was offensive.

jeesh, it’s like people insisting people are racist towards me when they are not or i am not offended in the least.

And Harry is respected in the army. Not because he is a prince, but because he is a good soldier.

Do your research before vilifying someone who was stupid as a young man but has now made up for it with a good career, good charitable deed, with two awards from quite serious bodies and who has the support of the british public.

No, you’re not the only one. I am not immune to the allure of a handsome, ruddy cheeked, strapping ginger prince with a love of dogs and babies (and who also flies a helicopter and rides horses). I asked my boyfriend what his take was (he’s an excellent judge of character–it’s uncanny); he feels that Harry is likely not an actual racist, anti-semite, or Hitler worshipper, but just your run-of-the-mill douche-y rich kid who probably isn’t terribly brilliant. This, of course, shattered my fantasy about Harry being very deep and insightful, but it is better to believe he is kind of a fratty dimwit than a racist or neo-Nazi. Anyway, for me, the jury is out, but it will take a lot of good deeds, good behavior, and a showing of some brains before I can chalk those mistakes up to pure immaturity. I mean, we were all of us young at some point…but how many of us dressed up like a mass murderer?

      • pantsonfire
        0

Then again, maybe for him, Hitler encompassed everything that was evil and scary about the world, and he was compelled to dress up like him to conquer his fear…like making the bogeyman impotent. So maybe it really was just a product of thoughtless immaturity.

        • Trace
          0

Nope, he dressed up as Hitler because it was a ‘Colonials and Natives’ party – which is offensive in itself!

        • Trace
          0

Sorry, he dressed up as a Nazi, not Hitler in particular.

“he feels that Harry is likely not an actual racist, anti-semite, or Hitler worshipper, but just your run-of-the-mill douche-y rich kid who probably isn’t terribly brilliant”

This is pretty much how I feel about him. He’s as charming as hell, but he’s only slightly smarter than Ryan Lochte when you get down to it. I don’t think he’s a hateful person, but I think he also doesn’t have a good filter working between his brain and his mouth.

Picture 25: He is receiving an award from the Atlantic50 organisation for his charity work. It’s quite a serious organisation, based in Washington DC. Award was given by Colin Powell, no less. That has to merit something in your books, surely?

or does he need to turn into the Dalai Lama/Mother Theresa/Nelson Mandela/Aund Suu Kyi rolled into one to merit your favour???!!!

If you’re upset by Harry wearing a Nazi uniform at a fancy dress party, I hope for your sake you never see British sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo.

      • pantsonfire
        0

I don’t think it’s equivalent. What happens in the context of a comedic television show (a form of art/entertainment) is different than a member of the royal family parading about in a Nazi uniform. That doesn’t feel like commentary or cleverness or wit or what have you. I’m not a particularly sensitive person and indeed am known for being just the opposite and having a sense of humor that borders (and takes deep forays into) the offensive. I don’t think that those people who find Harry’s Nazi costume in poor taste lack a sense of humor or are being particularly sensitive or delicate.

        • Kirst
          0

Since when is going to a private party “parading around”? Anyone who thinks that Harry wearing that costume to a fancy dress party means that he’s a Nazi sympathiser or doesn’t appreciate the gravity of WWII is too stupid to use the internet. He’s British. We take the piss out of things, including Nazis.

        • pantsonfire
          0

@Kirst – I don’t think he’s a Nazi sympathizer. I do think that as a member of the monarchy he has to know he’s going to be in the public eye, even at a supposedly “private” party. While I’ll bow down to your superior intellect and your ability to take the piss out of things, I do think a member of the royal family choosing, of all his possible costume choices, to dress as a Nazi is in poor taste and insensitive to people who might not be ready to laugh at genocide. I understand his impulse to transgress something that is considered taboo (at least in America), but I do think his decision to act on that impulse likely reveals something less than sterling about his character (which he may or may not have grown out of).

Also, calling people stupid who do not agree with your opinion is a fairly lazy and unconvincing argument (and just plain rude).

        • Kirst
          0

I’m not calling people stupid for not agreeing with me. I’m calling people stupid IF they think that Harry’s a Nazi sympathiser for wearing a Nazi fancy dress costume. See the difference?

Wearing that costume isn’t laughing at genocide. ‘Allo ‘Allo isn’t laughing at genocide. Neither is Dad’s Army, or the episodes of Doctor Who set in the blitz.

Thank you for recognising my superior intellect though.

This is pointless to debate, as it really comes down to you not having a problem with him wearing a Nazi uniform versus me thinking it was in poor taste and the wrong thing for him to do. But to be clear, you said that anyone who thought that Harry was a Nazi sympathizer OR didn’t appreciate the gravity of WWII because of his decision to don a Nazi uniform at a party is “too stupid to use the internet.” That is essentially saying that those who didn’t agree with your opinion on this matter are stupid. Further, you have been mischaracterizing the stance of those you oppose: no one is saying he’s a Nazi sympathizer. We are saying that it was a bad decision and revealed something not great about his character. No one (including myself) said that art (including television programs) that deals with WWII and portrays Nazis is laughing at genocide. Art and comedy serve an important function in society, a way of exploring and working through difficult issues. That is NOT what Harry was doing by wearing a Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party. Perhaps an analogous situation would be if the child of an American president decided to dress like Osama bin Laden at a party of their wealthy peers, where they are in the public eye. It’s just a thoughtless, insensitive thing to do and honestly, someone in that position should know better.

I’m fine with you not sharing my view on this, but I take issue with your way of expressing it and deriding those who don’t agree. You mischaracterize their position so as to make it seem ridiculous and extreme, instead of just stating your opinion. You’re quick to characterize others as “stupid” for their views, when the position people have taken here is not unreasonable at all.

That’s a ludicrous comparison – Allo Allo was set in occupied France, so of course there would be Nazis around!

When the royal kids were born I was already old, well only “college old” and as Prince William grew up I was all like” wow, he’s so cute and looks just like his mother and he will be such a looker one day” and the other one, the spare, well, poor little ginger guy, at least he will benefit from being a royal. But wow, who’d have thunk it that Harry would become such and attractive guy, and a ginger at that, and so far he’s kept his hair!

All kidding aside, they both seem like fine young men despite what baggage must come from all of the publicity and being a royal and all. Still, Harry has to be the world’s foremost example of “hottest ginger”, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Remember the “McKayla Maroney is not amused” image making the rounds of famous places and events? Someone needs to take that first picture and make a series of “Prince Harry is delighted” snaps. Bonus points if it somehow features light (bulbs, or otherwise).

Let’s move on from the Nazi argument, please. (A sentence I hope not to have to type in 2013.) I appreciate everyone remaining as civil as possible. There’s no need for name-calling on anyone’s part.
