Pretty Well Played, Jessica Chastain

well-played

Can we examine again how fantastic her head is?

Great makeup — particularly the lip — and her hair looks amazing, and this whole thing is basically making me re-examine my life to see if I can turn into this without resorting to surgery.

In this close-up the dress is making her look a tad slumpy, but in the wide shot, I really like it:

Fabulous color, and the poncho-to is cut nicely — it gives the dress a funky shape while also showing off how tiny she is. If the shoes had been more imaginative, this would’ve been an unreserved WHEEEEEEEE because I am trying to save up my words for Sunday and beyond; then again, if she’d gotten creative with them, she might’ve swung and missed even more dramatically, because that’s what she does with her feet (remember the stripper heels she wore to the Globes?). So actually, I’ll take the nude blahmobiles right now and call this a win.

Oohhh, pretty! And I mean that nicely; she looks great. Here’s hoping she looks great on Sunday evening too. Jewel tones are your friend, JChas. Wear them in good health. Which, judging by your beautiful hair, is what you’re doing here.

I like this. It’s interesting and the color looks insanely good on her. I don’t LOVE the shoes but I’m happy that they’re just nude shoes and not nude platform hooves.

I realize that I don’t know Jessica and have no legitimate reason to feel this way, but I REALLY want to see her nail it on Sunday.

I still have a quibble about the brows – they’re brushed downward. That looks good on no one in the world. Even when they’re this beautiful. And, yeah, the shoes.

But overall a win. Love the dress, and she’s so glowing in deep, jewel-hued blue!

I never noticed that, but I did notice that i always have a feeling of a heavy forehead thing coming from her. That must be it! Why would they do that, who brushes brows down?

She really does need help with her brows. I don’t know that she brushes them down, I think they just grow that way naturally (mine do), but with a brow pencil he could lift them up a bit and create a higher arch.

Brow gel will straighten them or even brush them upward if they grow downward. Before this was readily available, I used to put a little hair gel on a clean mascara brush. Same thing really – worked great. Specifically made brow gels that we have now are even better.

There’s just no reason to close up her eye area and expand her forehead like this. It’s unflattering and very easy to change.

A redhead in sapphire blue is a beautiful thing, indeed. Best wishes for Sunday, Jessica!!

Love the blue but not sure about the capey effect.

This is a win. The color is great, her face looks great, the dress is interesting without being weird, and personally I am completely fine with nude shoes. Something “jazzy” would have been stealing thunder from the dress, which would have been sad and bad. Two thumbs up.

Cape too full in front, and not quite right with the eyebrows, but at least they are visible for once. She does look a bit bemused and somewhat sad when they are brushed downward, however..

Not a fan of the cape or the shoes. Make that cape a bolero and I’d go for it. But her face/hair are beautiful.

I actually think the nude shoes work here. Well done!

She looks so pretty in bold colors! The pastels wash her out. This color looks amazing on her, and that lip color is perfect.

Would somebody please explain the eyebrow business to me? Unless they meet in the middle of someone’s forehead or have taken on an independent life, ala Dr. Rowan Williams during the Kate’n’Wills wedding festivities, I tend not to notice eyebrows much at all. Certainly not to the extent that I would say that Jessica looks bemused and sad in this picture. Of course, my eyebrows have been hidden behind the rims of my glasses for the vast majority of my life, so maybe they just don’t register with me.

You can tell if someone is smiling in genuine pleasure by looking at the outer corners of their eyes. If the corners are crinkled, the smile is real. If not, it isn’t, regardless of what the cheek muscles are doing. See Dr. Richard J. Davidson’s The Emotional Life of Your Brain for a full explanation

I’m not an eyebrow expert by any means, but the eyebrow powder/filler is slightly too dark toward the inner part of her brows, which gives the slight effect of them “Millhousing” (aka going slightly up on the inner corners). This is obviously preferable to how her previously invisible eyebrows, still not quite right. Even so, she looks gorgeous.

Wow, that was nonsensical. I guess I deleted some words on accident. Anyway, you get the gist. Eyebrows look quizzical, but better than how they used to be (invisible).

I think someone else also made a point about them being brushed down, instead of up and out. Low hanging brows can make a person look tired and/or older (which is why people get brow lifts, high brows are a sign of youth). She is super gorgeous, but you can tell from the arch on her left (picture’s right), that they are brushed down…and it is probably not as flattering as it would be if they were angled up and out. The down brush makes them seem like they are closer to her eye than they could be.

Some people notice eyebrows and some don’t. I never did until I admired a friend’s (immaculately groomed) brows and realized the reason I thought my forehead was big was because my eyebrows are not very wide and one of them is white blonde while the other is brown.

Goodness gracious, she is a breathtaking beauty.

In the first picture, though, she reminds me of the Barbie Deluxe Styling Head I had as a child. Head, neck, shoulders, nothing else. However, she’s WAY prettier than my Barbie Head was (especially after I took the scissors to Barbie’s wayward hair).

Gee, when did she join the priesthood? Alas, the jury is still out for me.

I was thinking this is very Sr. Bertrille, myself. Lovely color, but the cape renders it nun-adjacent.

Ahhhh yes she is very, very lovely but the top part of the dress makes me think she is wearing a very fancy one of those capes that you have to wear when you go to the beauty salon. Of course the only ones I have ever had to wear is the black plastic ones in the cheep salons.

Gosh she’s so pretty. I hope she hasn’t splashed out too early! I really want good clothes to happen to her, especially on Oscar night.

The jury’s not out for me. That godawful cape thingy ruins what could have been a dynamite dress. I can’t even give her a pass on the blah shoes. She’s lovely, but the clothes? No.

Give her a red tie and a giant yellow hat (and a brown dog too) and isn’t this Madeline?

I don’t like this at all. I think the cape looks ridiculous. She looks like a mushroom.

I like this a lot. She misses a lot with her risks, but this one is a hit!

I use Just for Men on my eyebrows to darken them up (they are lighter than my hair and I hate that). The effect lasts for a couple of weeks and it’s easy to mix just a teeny bit (there are two small tubes, color base and developer, in the box) with a Q-tip and apply so one box lasts a long, long time.

The color looks amazing on her, but I’m not a fan of capes, let alone stiff, bulky ones like hers.

I really want celebs to stop wearing their hair like this.

Other than that though, she looks fabulous.

I don’t care for shapeless tops, but I quite like the color. You’re right that the shoes are boring as nuts, though.

This reminds me of Tilda Swinton’s uniform in Moonrise Kingdom. This is a compliment.
