Predict The Cover: Vogue, 2013

Last year (I think?), we had an entire impromptu discussion predicting who would be on the cover of Vogue in the next year. It was fun. But I thought it would be MORE fun if we took a look back at last year’s covers (and this January’s), and then officially predicted who we thought would land them in 2013.  Then, at the end of 2013, we can take a look back and officially see how we did. Things to bear in mind as you make your predictions: who has a movie coming out, the fact that there’s going to be a terrible “Shape” issue (so that cover might be an outlier), and the people Anna can not resist. For example, I feel like Carey Mulligan is totally getting a cover tied into the Great Gatsby premiere in May. So, let’s take a look at Vogue‘s cover fugs and fabs of 2012, and then hit the comments to make your predictions.

My own predictions? In no particular order: GWEN STEFANI (a gimmee, since hers is out already); the aforementioned Mulligan;  Jennifer Lawrence; Chastain (she feels due for one);  either Michelle Williams or Rachel Weisz in PR for The Great and Powerful Oz; Amy Adams for Man of Steel; they’re going to toss one to Claire Danes when Homeland comes back and be all, “new baby! hit show!”; Beyonce (she has an album coming out, and is also Beyonce); Emma Watson; Naomi Watts (no way is Anna going to be able to resist talking about Diana); Kate Winslet, who also has a movie coming out (Labor Day, which sounds like the newest Gary Marshall 100-Celebs-in-a-Holiday-Movie disaster, but which is allegedly a drama); Gaga again (just because0; and, finally…..this is hard. I’m going to close out with Kiki Dunst, which is very unlikely, but I love her so….let’s just see what happens.

What do you think?

Yeah, those are all good and reasonable choices. I just find that Vogue focuses on the same kind of celebrity lady all the time and it kind of bores me. Wouldn’t it be fun if they put someone like Ke$ha on the cover?! OR SOLANGE?! I would actually quite like that.

I just hope Sienna Miller doesn’t end up there this year because I CAN’T.

    • A.J.
      0

Ke$ha on the cover would be AWESOME.

    • yeahandalso
      0

ugh, I’d kinda forgotten Sienna existed…but you know she probably had a bunch of pregnancy photos taken just so she could do the shape issue haha

Though I think there’s a chance we could see Christina Hendricks do the shape issue, it is timed for the Mad Men premiere

    • Elbyem
      +1

Yes, Solange would be wonderful, but a) she’s Beyonce’s sister, and b) there’s apparently only one sista cover allowed per annum, for VOGUE (and most major U.S. publications).

Maybe Sandra Bullock? That movie she’s in with Melissa McCarthy looks hilarious, and it’s been a while for Sandy. Plus, Louis is one of the cutest celeb-babies. I also vote for Angelina Jolie getting a cover if she has something coming out this year, and maybe Catherine Zeta Jones? Carey Mulligan, I agree, is a must.

    • Roz
      0

I agree. My first thought was Sandra Bullock. She is coming out big with “Gravity”.

  3. MC

So many actresses had their “role of a lifetime!” (or some slight variance on that theme) this past year. Their headline writers need new copy.

  4. Stefanie

My money is on Goop. She made through an entire year without being on the cover so it’s her turn Im sure. I think she has a cook book coming out this year. Oh and Ironman 353664.

    Carey for sure.

Cate Blanchett and Penelope Cruz both have movies coming out in 2013.

I’m going to throw Mila Kunis in as well for the Great and Powerful Oz.

And finally, just for shits (and hopes. Oh the hopes) Julianne Moore and Zack Galifianakis.

I’m hoping for a Zoe Saldana cover for her new movie about Nina Simone. A girl can dream.

Ohh yes Zoe Saldana, she is so pretty and she also has the next Star Trek movie coming out in may as well. :)

How cool would it have been if Keira had an actual (fake, obviously) bionic arm on that cover? C’mon, Vogue, let’s make cyborgs happen.

  6. Jerika Coleman

Definitely agree with Mulligan and Chastain. I don’t even know if Hathaway has any movies coming out in 2013, but they’ll probably give her one anyway, I feel like she’s always on Vogue. Also possibly Rose Byrne, Isla Fisher, and Evangeline Lilly (depending on how large her Hobbit role is). And now I’ve gotten to thinking, for the young fashionista crowd, Chloe Grace Moretz? Her Carrie remake is due out soon (though Julianne Moore could probably score it instead).

Beyonce, for sure. Super Bowl, new Pepsi deal, new album (I think).

i just can’t get past the wonkiness of anne’s left eye in the december cover. it seriously looks like they used the rotate tool. weirds me out.

    • Kat

Yes! Wonk eye on the cover of Vogue is inexcusable.

      • bee
        0

How to avoid wonk eye: please make this part of photoshop 101… Also I wouldn’t mind if Anne Hathaway skipped a year of magazine covers.

Love the 70s Swift cover, very fresh. Maybe the same vibe with Mila Kunis in 2013?

Charlize will surely get one, too? For Mad Max maybe.

        • Desiree
          0

Mad Max? For real? If so, you’ve made me very happy. Who else in it? I’m so excited I’m using you as the internet. Sorry, bee.

We definitely need a Kiernan Shipka Vogue cover in 2013!!

    • ErinE
      +1

Kiernan is a great guess! Have they ever done someone young like her? She’s such a little fashionista.

      • Kat
        +1

I’m not sure if they’ve ever used anyone as young as her, but she has such innately great taste (and access to amazing clothes) that she really needs a Vogue cover. The youth of America need SOME kind of role model ;)

        • glee
          0

Isn’t there Teen Vogue? For the likes of Kiernan?

        • Kat
          +1

Yes, there is Teen Vogue, but hear me out. Teen Vogue, I feel, is for people who are fashion novices, not necessarily just young. Kiernan Shipka is very high fashion, and incredibly avant garde in some of her choices. I think her taste and the level of “fashion” that she brings is much more suited to Vogue.

  10. qwertygirl

I’m wondering how many times the actress in question will have “The Role of a Lifetime!” as part of the cover blurb about their feature. This year Kiera and Anne H both got that line (those were the two I noticed–perhaps there were more that didn’t catch my eye). Surely Carey Mulligan in Great Gatsby deserves as much.

In light of more recent events, I would like to congratulate Vogue on pairing Taylor Swift with the Fatal Attraction headline.

    • Al

That was the first thing I noticed about that cover as well! I’m sure it was a coincidence, but well-played Vogue!

  12. Pouncer
    0

It’s been a looooong time since I’ve perused Vogue covers on a regular basis, and what surprises me most is how much the blurbs sound like they should be on Cosmo. Isn’t Vogue supposed to be aspirational? “Faking your way to flawless skin”??? “SECRET LIVES: When He Isn’t the Man You Thought He Was”??? What happened to “Chanel is fabulous, bitches!” and “Marc Jacobs will change your life!”

    • Kate A
      0

I made a similar comment earlier, but there are media firms that advise magazines on which coverlines help newsstand sales. I just left a (smaller) magazine, and we were told that placing numbers prominently on the cover will draw the reader’s attention (like 56 ways to get your man! or 25 best restaurants! or some such line). I’m sure Vogue has similar consultants for each month. It sort of kills the creativity.

  13. Amy
    0

Chastain might be February. A Best Actress nominee for the past couple years has been on a cover: Meryl in 2012 and Portman in 2011, Hathaway in 2009.
March (the Power issue) is already Beyonce.
April is the Shape issue so maybe Gisele with her 2nd unrealistically great post baby body.
May is usually someone with a big box office movie so probably Goopy for Iron Man 3. She’s got a new cookbook coming out too.
June – Mulligan. No way Anna will be able to resist.
July – I don’t know maybe Naomi Watts? Or Penelope Cruz?
August – Jennifer Aniston for the last shitty comedy she has coming on
    September – I don’t know SJP? Charlize?
    October – Claire Danes
November – Jennifer Lawrence for Catching Fire
December – Julia Roberts for August Osage County

ME, too. I am tired of all those celeb covers even if I like the celeb. Gwen deserved better that that silly squat shot. All those fashion mavens are deluded , living in the looking glass world they live in. Did you see the HBO show on editors? Some were scarily emaciated and some were so into themselves…
I would like to see Ben Whishaw on the cover!

      • Eliza Bennett

Zoe Saldana, too. Then SWINTON, and it would be the best year ever.

    • Vanessa

I realize that she’s not a big enough name, but Aubrey Plaza. She’s quirky and cool and has a lot of poise. Maybe if Anna gets addicted to Parks and Rec.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think the Swift cover is the best one from last year. Mostly because the others are so awful. I don’t know how they can photgraph these gorgeous and interesting women and make them all look so bland and soulless.

    • Kristin

It’s a great picture of Taylor. For a second I thought she was Kate Moss.

Great choices – here’s hoping they use Rachel AND Michelle together. And I’d LOVE to see Rebel Wilson on the cover of some fashion mag. Any one will do (probably not Vogue since Anna seems to lack a sense of humor)

  21. Betsy
    0

Oh, that’s a HAT on Gwen’s head! Thank you for pointing that out. I was sitting here thinking, “What the hell is wrong with her hair? Why does her face look so much bigger than the rest of her body??”

  22. junior
    0

All great choices. I agree that Zoe Saldana has so much in 2013 that they should (but they won’t). Kerry Washington should also (but won’t). If they do an age issue, look out for either Hillary Clinton by herself, Madonna & kids, Diane Lane & whomever younger she may be costarring with, SJP by herself, or a “classic” supermodel like Kate Moss or Cindy Crawford with someone younger like Coco Rocha, or of course Goop (ugh) being 40. I think Scarlett toward end of year and Lana del Rey is bound to happen eventually. Alicia Keys also feels possible and Natalie Portman will repeat at some point. Other than that, probably same old.

    • Popcouver

Emma Watson I would love to see but all she has coming is The Bling Ring and I’m not sure that’s Wintour’s style? Maybe.

CHASTAIN! Hopefully her award season this year is a better run for her….

Definitely Jennifer Lawrence for Catching Fire and Zoe Saldana for Star Trek. And Carey Mulligan for Gatsby. Kind of wish they’d toss Tobey and Leo in there too?

@zaf Good idea on the Obamas. Love to see that.

    • zaf

Thanks, Pop. I think that in the second term (no re-election fervor), that the power that is Michelle Obama as mom and fashion icon could be irresistible.

  25. Sven

Ooh, fun! Here are my guesses:

Jessica Chastain (definitely for Oscar mode)
    Naomi Watts
    Carey Mulligan
    Nicki Minaj (possible “Shape” cover)
Hillary Clinton (outlier for possible “Shape” cover – a boy can dream!)
    Beyonce
    Kate Winslet
    Jennifer Lawrence
Claire Danes (Homeland helped me get over my irrational hatred of her)
    Michelle Williams
Anne Hathaway (they’ll pull her out again after all the Les Miz Oscar buzz)
Lena Dunham (this is a huge stretch admittedly but she’s very NYC zeitgeisty)
Zooey Daschanel (because she has “Chanel” in her last name)

    • Annie E

I bet you’re right about Minaj. Vogue has been giving her an (outsized, in my opinion) amount of attention lately.

  26. Elaine

Well, I don’t know who will be on Vogue’s cover, but I know who I WISH would be on the cover. A makeover edition with Mary-Kate and Ashley, with them fresh and unrecognizable. SWINTON in her own style (tho’ a dominatrix over subdued Anna is a twisted thought and perhaps something MAD magazine shoud do). Julianne Moore because I’d love to see her beautifully dressed (not necessarilya guarantee on a Vogue cover, now isn’t that ironic?). For the shape issue, Pink. Didn’t someone mention Emma Watson? Would love to see that, as long as she is recognizable. How about Sofia Vergara? And I love the idea of Zoe Saldana too, much more than yet another shot of over-exposed Goop lady.

    • zaf
      0

Pink, done in haute couture, would be outstanding for the shape issue. I would be all over that one.

  27. Vandalfan

I think models on the cover were more fun, but that was in the days before photoshop, and now every pimply actor can look perfect.

Me? I want a fellow. Maybe Adam whatshisnuts, the American Idol winner? Or that designer dude who wears skirts, along with Kanye? (Dear lord, whatever covers may be, let’s pray Anna does not take a shine to the Kardashians and their money.)

I have a book at home of Vogue covers through the decades. Sorry, Ms. Wintour, but these photos just don’t hold a candle to the old Vogue covers. They were artful. They didn’t all look the same. They used models. In fact, they were so interesting, that someone made a beautiful coffee table book of them! I can’t imagine anyone making a book of these. I realize the choice of celebrity might be locked in long in advance, but I would love love love to see what Grace Coddington would do with those same people. I guarantee it would be something more thoughtful, more artful, and infinitely more stylish.

Oh Fug Girls, I love you but this has been driving me batty for a while: the full form of the contraction “can’t” – “cannot” – is always one word. “Can not” means that you actually are able to NOT do something. No matter how emphatically you can’t deal with someone or something, it’s always “cannot.”

  33. Jo

Zoey Deschanel, Mila Kunis, Christina Hendricks, (but styled properly), jennifer lawrence, Carey Mulligan, Goop, Amy Adams, Michelle Williams (if Kunis doesn’t get the Oz cover), Katie Holmes (possibly? My new life or some such guff), Naomi Watts (Oscar nod possible for Tsunami movie and her Diana film)…

  34. Roberta

I’d like to see one or both Fannings on the cover. They get both “well played” and “what is her stylist smoking”, which I think qualifies them for a Vogue cover.

  35. Lyric

… am I the only one who thinks Gwen’s head looks mighty weird at the top? It looks… shrunk. Cut-off. Half-size. She looks like Lucy Lui after she met Uma Thurman’s katana in Kill Bill. Beyonce is a lock as is Carey Mulligan. I think February is Rooney Mara and march IS Beyonce.

For the rest of the year my predictions are:
April : The OZ girls together with James Franco or another Michelle Williams cover or maybe a first cover for Mila Kunis?
May: Goop for Iron man 3
    June: Carey Mulligan for Gatsby
July: A no-talent girl that Wintour likes, so either Blake Lively or Sienna Miller or Katie Holmes
    August: Jessica Chastain first cover
    September: Claire Danes
October: Natalie Porman for Thor 2 and her big return after having a baby
November: Jennifer Lawrence for Catching Fire
December: Naomi Watts for the Diana biopic

I think Kate Upton may get her first US Vogue Cover, Mila Kunis may also get her first US Vogue Cover. Everyone knows Beyonce is on the cover for the March 2013 issue, I also think Jennifer Lawrence is due for a cover in 2013…This is my opinion. I personally would love to see Zoe Saldana on a US Vogue Cover but I don’t think that is going to happen.

I tried to predict exact months but that got muddy, so here goes: Beyonce, Rachel Weisz for Oz, Jessica Chastain, Jessica Biel I think for the Shape one (mostly because everyone keeps trying to make her happen. Did anyone else read that Elle mag shoot where fashion designer legends were shoving her down our throats. As if they really wanna talk about how AWESOME she is? ZZZ), Carey Mulligan, Nicole Kidman, Mariah Carey for American Idol, Claire Danes, Naomi Watts, Jennifer Lawrence, and Lily Collins for that Mortal Instruments coming out. So glad I renewed my Vogue subscription now! haha

MARCH: Beyonce (rumor has it, makes sense blah blah…)
APRIL: Katy Perry ( it’s the shape issue and instead of body shape it could be like one of her crazy shaply dresses…Plus she’s already been on Teen Vogue Cover)
MAY: Carey Mulligan (excited for The Great Gatsby, not so excited about this Predictable Wintour choice)
JUNE: Mila Kunis ( june and july are kind of toss aways, hence supermodel covers and athletes)
    JULY: Karlie Kloss/Joan Smalls (???)
AUGUST: Julianne Morre (Its been forever since she’s had a cover and she is beautiful and a little LITTLE older)
SEPT: two choice either Naomi Watts AS princess Di or Katie Holmes (common people! I’m not a fan of Katie but Anna loves her, she’s NY and is September, maybe even Victoria Beckem???? One reason they might not do the Lady Di cover is back in 2006 the September cover was the uber fancy Marie Antoinette, so TECHnically they’ve done the Royal September issue)

…..the rest of the year is too far away to predict……

Also Taylor Swift, especially if she surprises everyone and wins a golden globe for best song (Safe and Sound) and ends up nominated for an Oscar. Vogue will totally get all over that and be like “HER BEST YEAR EVER” or some crap like that….
