Paris Fugshion Week: Grab Bag part 1

In which we look at highlights from Chloe and Gaultier. The shows in our subscriptions vs. not seem like such random choices. No McQueen, Giambattista Valli, Roland Mouret, Andrew Gn, nor Givenchy… sigh. But at least we get some, so I can’t complain. I’m not interested in what this gift horse’s teeth look like.

In #3, at least she’s wearing panties…? And thank god for this show. I was running out of outfits for Casual Plushie Day.

    • witjunkie

See, I was thinking that was definitely more Executive Board Meeting Plushie.

      • qwertygirl

Sort of depends on how the Plushie bar is set in your particular workplace, I guess.

If and when that skirt makes its way into the world, the chosen starlet will totally change the top, is my prediction.

And the shoes, is my devout wish.

Also, the vinyl sweatpants in slide 16 may well be the worst pants ever featured on this site, and that is SAYING something.

    • JillSpill

I don’t know, I can picture The Sev wearing the entire outfit as is.

      • Helen

I fully expect to see Justin Bieber wearing those pants. Around his thighs, of course.

Why cant things just be pretty and not see thru? Who needs leather sweat pants? Why are the models wearing Joe Dirt wigs? So many questions.

    • LoriK

Joe Dirt—that it! Thank you. I could not figure out where I had seen those ridiculous things plopped on the heads of the Gaultier models.

And obviously when your styling echoes Joe Dirt your vision has gone off the rails.

      • LT1

It was hard to look at the clothes because I was so distracted by the mullet wigs. Who thought that was a good idea?

But since I was avoiding having to look at their heads I did pay more attention to their feet and I love those wrap boots, especially in the non-black colors.

About the models at the Gautier show–are they wearing fake eyebrows? The models have abnormally bushy eyebrows (check out #3 AKA the purple look-at-my-black-panties dress for example)–those can’t possibly be real.

  5. Edith

Serious question raised by all these comments, and by all of these shows: it seems the trend is not only to make all the models look uniform (identical wigs / makeup) but also to make them look UGLY (bad wigs / makeup / fake brows / aggressive fascinators / too-small-furry-blue-hats / hideous platform crocs). Is this simply a means of further showcasing the clothes by downplaying the wearer – i.e., the more uniform the models, the more they disappear and become truly human clothes hangers – or is it something else? Models as performance art, or an expresision of contempt that transcends hating women’s bodies to hating their faces / heads / beauty?

Or am I just procrastinating when I should be working?

    • Helen

It’s definitely a trend. I’m pondering why, too. And my first thought, seeing the (albeit temporary) murder of all this beauty, is – as with any murder – cui bono?

Which leads me to: Maybe the designers are just trying to avoid creating the Next Wave of Supermodels, so they won’t have to pay so much to get their clothes Seen. Prosaic, even crass, but I’m afraid I think it likely.

    • Bambi Anne Dear

I agree that it probably is the designers’ intention to showcase the clothes rather than have the audience gawking at super gorgeous models but somehow they go to the other extreme and we’re gawking at some pretty confrontational makeup and hair. Maybe Tyra could explain via a guest presentation.

Maybe this is why I didn’t enjoy my one year in art school but… I feel like there is a fine line between art, and intentionally making wackadoodle shit. These pieces are not respectful of that line. Not only are they crossing said line, they are flashing it with their sheer dresses.

  7. Pinga

The wigs on the models at the Gaultier show look very reminiscent of what happens when little kids give their Barbies haircuts. Unusual style inspiration, to say the least.

  8. Helen

Weirdly, I totally love the Gaultier crazy pants. And this might sound even crazier, but I think I’d pair them with the Chloe gilded fence shirt, with a black tank under it.

Y’know, if I weren’t twenty years too old and three cup sizes too big to wear the resulting outfit…

So yeah, let’s put it on Kristen Stewart!

  9. vandalfan

    Leather sweatpants…The mind simply boggles.

  10. Bambi Anne Dear

I love most of the JPG, in particular 4, 5 and 6. Some of the Chloe were great too.

  11. Sajorina

I have to admit that I love the gilded fence shirt! And COVET dress #19! The light blue dress (#13) is the same color as my sister’s HS graduation dress and she’s a redhead, so I can tell you that it looked great on her!

I thought the model in Slide #13 actually WAS Rooney Mara.

The clothes? Nothing to see here, folks. Just keep moving along.

  14. Ericajeanine

Ok, I’ll admit it. I like the leather sweatpants.
