Oscars Well Played/Oscar Weekend Fug Carpet: Helen Mirren

Welcome to our annual Helen Mirren Is A Hot, Hot Dame:

Helen Mirren

This year’s post is brought to you by gunmetal, bling, and genetics. DNA: It’s what’s for dinner.

However:

Helen Mirren

Dear God. Either Helen forgot body-shapers go under your clothes, or she’s halfway through self-mummification. Somebody check her bag for viscera jars so we can know for sure.

The second outfit would be awesome too if it were just the dress and coat….what is that white gauzey business?

Also, why couldn’t Melissa Leo wear something awesome like Helen’s Oscar gown? I know she is younger than Helen, but still that cut would have looked great on Melissa

Somehow Helen Mirren can get away with almost literally anything, because she always carries her shitty outfits with that certain je ne sais quoi of KISS MY HOT HOT ASS HATERS. She knows when she looks goooooood, and she knows when she doesn’t look quite as gooooood (although, damn, still.), and just does not give a fuck, is all.

#1 what a splendid color, and haircut, and person, but i am undecided about the puffy sleeves. i think, i dont really like it that way but its exeptable with the rest

She looked great last night. As to the other, she still looks great. Love her hair!

She puts soooo many of the younger women to shame…

The background dudes in the first shot really merit their own dialogue.

She is who Cate Blanchett will be in 20 years!

Helen Mirren had the best red-carpet look of the night. She is all that and a packet of crisps (a nod to our good friends across the pond). Always has been. At every age.

I won’t comment on the second look because I don’t need to. She’s earned the right to dress down a bit. Please refer to her body of work. (Which is not what’s under that dress.)

I love the facial expression on the dude with the navy tie. He is totally thinking “DAYUM, I’d hit that!”

She’s amazing! She’s the queen of the red carpet and nobody can touch her.

Hellen Mirren looks lovely, as always, however that gray dress is a dead ringer for those worn by my bridesmaids in 1989. They were teal, of course, but otherwise the same.

I forget which red carpet show I was watching, but she and Helena Bonham Carter got into a kooky and utterly charming convo about how Helena is Helen’s mother. (“The King’s Speech,” “The Queen,” get it?) And then they cooed over each other’s dresses and I weirdly wanted to make out with both of them. Or at least have drinks.

I want to be Helen Mirren when I grow up. One of my absolute favorite looks of the evening.

Outfit #1 is Made of Win. But #2 would be improved without the white thing.

    Dame Helen, you’re the top! You’re a Botticelli. You’re a Shakespeare sonnet.

    Dress, styling, accessories, the lot.

If only we could take a teaspoonful of HM’s style and sprinkle it over Some Other People, the Oscars and every other award show would be so much more fun to watch.

    *smiles* Such a cute comment.

Do you think she walks down the red carpet thinking, “I’m Helen Mirren, Bitches! Envy me!” Cuz I would…

    Gorgeous as always!

I love that a woman over 60 can be cute, hot, sexy and confident. Makes getting older quite a bit less scary. La Mirren can do no wrong in my book. While that white gauzy thing isn’t quite right, it’s still not wrong. ;-)

It’s typical Helen: polarized between great and wretched, with no discernable pattern.

She always has great posture, though.

I hereby give that first dress the Dress I Would Most Like To Own award. I’m only 35, but damn I love me some iridescent gray/taupe/mushroom/slate, and fancy sleeves. Could that neckline be any more flattering?!

Bronze, no? In any case, the best of the night, by miles. She’d have done a better job hosting too!

I looked at her in that gown and the first word that popped into my head was ‘sophistication’, but it quickly slipped back out when I saw the 2nd photo, bit hard to believe it’s the same person!

She is my lady crush and my hope for the future (along with Ruby Dee and Jeanne Cooper) and I just love everything she wears. That 2nd outfit, eh, who cares? She’s HELEN MIRREN, B-WORDS!!!

I remember when she used to regularly bring stylistic crack to the red carpet, so the second look is more like the real Helen to me, even after years of mostly solid, even spectacular, fashion choices.

Mr. Crooked Blue Tie Guy is looking at her like she’s a filet mignon!! Fab!

Love the look. Have you seen this lady in a bikini? Seriously. She doesn’t bat .1000, however, see Exhibit B.

This first gown is lovely, and the second one would be great if she got rid of the weird white gauze, because the dress hidden underneath looks cool. Not really sure about the coat and shoes with the second look either, but getting rid of the bandages would be a huge step forward.
