Oscars Well Played: Naomi Watts

well-played

This might have been my favorite look of the night. You may not have won Best Actress, Naomi, but you are in a very tight race for Best Dressed:

It is unusual that you will find me calling something futuristic and weird and amazing, but here we are.

My favorite of the night. She looks amazing and the fit is perfection.

It was the best look of the night, hands down.

Just noted that about Zoe Saldana – also minimal accessories – watch, earrings, and Liev Schriber (can I borrow that last one?).

This dress deserves a look in the full-blown mode – the tailoring is SO amazing. And her face!

agreed. my runner-up for best. as one of my gays said, “the Impossible Naomi is Barbarella!”

This was awesome. In theory, there is no way I would have liked it. But the fit is perfect and it is interesting without being weird, and modern, but pretty. Love it.

Same here (well, except for the shiny sparkly bit). Plus, her make-up and hair were some of the best of the night. Loved it.

i thought i liked the hair when i saw it on TV, but in the picture it looks awful; like she took a nap then ran her fingers through it, climbed in her limo and said “Lets go to the Oscars!”

Yes, I’m pretty sure she won Red Carpet. The dress was badass, and sparkly, and gun metal, which is the badassest sparkliest of colors. High voltage Watts FTW.

  5. Lenn

Best dressed by far. Edgy, sophisticated, cool and beautiful.

Love someone who rocks a frock that stands out from the strapless crowd. The cut out gives her a bit of a Moon-Over-Miami look. Great hair and makeup, too.

Easily my favorite dress of the evening! Impeccable tailoring. Just the right amount of accessorizing and perfect makeup.

I guess I’m in the minority here but this dress does not do anything for me. I don’t like that weird cut-out and her hair is a mess.

Second the motion. Don’t understand the kerfluffle.

      • Sue
        +11

Agree. The fit is stellar, I will say that. And I love the sparkle and the overall cut. Just don’t like the futuristic vibe. Feels like something a really hot alien on Star Trek would wear to a party on the holodeck.

        • Maria L.
          +4

Absolutely gave me Star Trek vibes also. I kept thinking it would look great on Lt. Uhura at the Starship Enterprise Galactic Ball.

My reaction was that she’s about to participate in a formal archery competition.

Totally agree – very Deep Space Nine for me. Great fit though, slamming bod. Pity about the messy hair.

    • Caroline
      +4

I agree. The fit is impeccable and the fabric beautiful, but that cut-out ruins it for me. And her hair seems like a bit of an afterthought.

      • glee
        +8

Ii think if the hair was perfect, Naomi would have looked like a fembot. This appears to be a very deliberate decision on her (and her stylist’s) part.

      • erin
        0

I thought the shape of the cutout echoed the whole tsunami from the film…

but i adore this dress and think she looks amazing.

    • Maria L.
      +5

I think I would have liked it better if the dress could decide which half it wanted to be. But the fit is impeccable and she gets bonus points for wearing a color that actually contrasts with her skin tone….and more bonus points for being sparkly.

    • Esme
      +1

I’m with you–I don’t like this at all!

    • Mariela
      +1

In with the “not so much” crowd here. She looks damned good, but the dress itself is ridiculous. Which makes her looking good in it even more amazing, truthfully.

      • Sandra
        +1

Yeah, I’ve never liked liked the half-sleeve, half-strapless look either. Something about this particular incarnation of it makes it look like somebody has started to skin her. Other than that weird cut-out though, it’s pretty dang great.

    • Polly
      0

I get an optical illusion from this dress. All I can see from that cut out is a giant bird talon or something coming down that’s trying to rip off her right boob. I wince every time I see it.
      (Apologies for the imagery.)

  8. Helen

It’s very runway editorial, which doesn’t usually work in any other context, but she’s wearing the hell out of it. Wonderful!

    *applause*

This was one of the best fit dresses of the evening. Love the silvery blue color too. The drama of the top is soooo the point of this dress, and you can tell, and somehow, for me that distracted from a very well played dress. I can’t help but feel I am being nit-picky, yet it was a problem for me in that the negative space from the shoulder and pointing toward the torso made me think of a restyled Nike swoop emblem. I guess I didn’t like the swoop.

    • Rayna
      +2

Bizarre! So I’m not the only person who got a Nike swoosh vibe from this dress!!!

Typically, Naomi looks like $1M, so, whatevs, and you know I’m a sucker for the sparkly. And it DOES fit, thank goodness, and it’s an actual color.

But I’m just not feeling it.

Incredible! I don’t know how she’s pulling this off but she is (okay well it’s because she is beautiful and elegant and this just works so well for her but you know what I mean).

SO cool. She looked like a bad ass and I totally approve.

Except that if you squint, it looks like a nude flamingo (or Toucan Sam?) is getting friendly with her right breast.

I didn’t expect Sexy Tin Man to be a motif at this years Oscars and yet, between Naomi and Halle Berry, here we are.

Note that I didn’t say that was a bad thing – I loved both their dresses. It just felt very Variations On A Hilarious Theme to me.

Some of those dresses looked like they would need WD-40 halfway through the evening.

I don’t normally gush, but here goes. She is a stone cold fox, and that dress is to DIE.

  15. Ari

This grew on me. When I saw it first I didn’t like the cutout but the more I see it, the cooler it looks. And she is stunning.
My favourite of the night is Kerry Washington’s coral Miu Miu though.

  16. Nancy
    +2

It’s cool, and it fits great. But this is probably the first time I’ve disagreed with you guys to this degree. The cut is HORRIBLE. It’s so off-putting. Compare this dress to the Calvin Klein Jennifer Lawrence wore to the Vanity Fair party. That dress kicks this dress’s ass.

So fantastic. The fit is incredible, and she is workin’ it! Definitely my favorite of the night.

My trouble with this is that it reminds me of something we have seen before. Not from her, and I can’t place it – but hasn’t this one cap sleeve/neck sling strap been done? Perhaps not with the half-sweetheart neckline, and not in that great color…but I wish it was not reminding me of something else.

(.. Cate Blanchett, 2007 Oscars! yup. that may be what you remember– liquid-metal-shine, one-shoulde– astonishing. gorgeous. the way she always looks, to me-)

but I hafta say I thought Naomi Watts looked absolutely beautiful. the soft tendrils thing going with her hair. and the way the dress color made her eyes beam blue-silver. a total WOW!

Naomi nailed it for me, too. This was my absolute favorite dress of the whole night. I love the asymmetry, the color, the fit. PERFECTION.

It is a lovely dress and Naomi is a beautiful woman but somehow she doesn’t exude edgy which I would have liked with this dress. Romantic hair is also not helping things. I would have preferred it on someone like Zoe Saldana. That said, I think these two should have swapped dresses. Naomi would have rocked Zoe’s frilly yet interesting gown and Zoe would have looked fierce in this one.

I *almost* loved this dress. She looked great – but I was bit… I feel conflicted about the cut out. I don’t love it – but the dress would have been boring without it so… Maybe if her hair had looked less “I just rolled out of bed” and more “artfully dishevled” I would have whole heartedly loved this.

I wholed heartedly loved the other gun metal gray dresses last night- Halle Berry, MIchelle Obama and Jennifer Hudson. All looked fabulous (although not lovin’ JHud’s hair, either.)

It was my favorite too. And for such a tiny woman, I’m amazed by how well she pulled this off.

I think she was also looking beautiful in the face too. She’s aging really gracefully and has a great smile and glow.

I don’t have TV, but I was talking with my mother while she watched it.. She started talking about this dress, trying to describe it to me and I made a face sort of like the one I make when my husband jokes about making liver for dinner. But now that I see it, I LOVE it. It doesn’t hurt that she has Liev as arm candy. mmmmmmm

  28. Minda

I agree. Usually futuristic clothes are some rip off of a 40′s or 50′s style anyway, which is funny in it’s way. And I see a bit of that here. It’s like something Dale Arden (Flash Gordon’s girlfriend) would wear, isn’t it? I’m surprised to find that isn’t a bad thing. lol I really like it and she carries it off.

My husband’s response: “Goddamn Liev Schreiber is a lucky guy.” I thought she looked amazing, too. Love the gunmetal. Love the weirdness. Simon Doonan complains on Slate today that most of the dresses are too boring and I agree. They’re pretty, just not very interesting. This is interesting and arresting and I love it.

See? A little gunmetal silver/grey does a blonde some good. As does a wonderful fit, some fantastic hair and makeup, and a handsome man. Naomi has never looked better.

It looks like what Sleeping Beauty’s auntie fairies would have whipped up. One wanted cap sleeves, one wanted sleeveless. Like Aurora’s pink and/or blue gown, this one may change at any moment.

However- she looks great in it, and (except for Rebecca Miller) wins the accessories contest for the night.

Actuallly, it would be AWESOME if this dress all of a sudden changed into a totally different dress. And then changed back. And then back again…I’ve watched too many Disney movies, haven’t I.

Only Naomi Watts….. I love it…but I seriously think it’s because of how she wears it….and by that she wears it with the charm and ease she would any ol’ thing she pulled out of her closet.

  49. LouLou

One of my favourites. I love well-deployed glittery gunmetal, and the shape and fit are knockout. I’m not normally a fan of one-shoulder or otherwise asymmetrical dresses, but I think what sells me on this one is that it does sit across two shoulders, with the cutout then going down towards the boob. If it had been your run of the mill one-shoulder, with a diagonal line running from underarm to opposite shoulder, it wouldn’t have made nearly the same impression. So the line across the neck and the cutout design, which seems to have put off so many, is actually what seals it for me.

My favorite look of the night, by far. Dress was a simple/futuristic/stunning and her make-up and hair were on point.

  51. Val

Stylists & Stars: do you ever wonder just how tight a dress should be tailored? This dress is a perfect illustration of a garment that is figure hugging but not strangling. Extremely flattering.

I kinda like the neckline but I would have been okay with a completely bateau neckline too. I’d like to see what the back looked like . . . .

  52. Soapstef

This dress was my favorite out of the metallics..even though I think that arm cut makes her look somewhat like a cyborg. What put it above Stacy & Halle’s for me was the brightness. The others looked too dark once I saw this one. Liev as a hot accessory didn’t hurt either.

  53. luxsword

There’s glitter and originality and it fits, but that cut it kinda dreadful. Like her boob is being cut off and about to drop. Brrrrrrr.

i am completely obsessed with the dress. i love her, and liev, and what i really love the most is that they are comfortably holding hands and not trying to pose like the king and queen of the red carpet. she rarely steps off my best dressed list. i actually saw her at a restaurant in bondi and she was so casual cool with her beautiful, seemingly normal children who didn’t have a nanny and knew the meaning of the word no.
