Oscars Well Played: Jennifer Aniston

well-played

If I had told you Jennifer Aniston would be a welcome hit of color at the Academy Awards, you most likely would’ve patted me on the head and told me my crystal ball was actually just a baseball, or something.

And yet, here we are. Aniston is not a ball-gown kind of girl, either, and she’s certainly not an advocate of anything that isn’t black, white, beige, or metallic. So even though this Valentino is so simple it’s practically foolproof, the dress still manages to be a happy surprise. I wish she’d done something with her hair, but let’s just take this thing one step at a time, lest we pull a groin muscle.

She is so ridiculously boring to me, that even though this is color on what was a pretty colorless red carpet, it’s still in the “meh’ category. She didn’t even bother with her hair, just the same old “California beachy, blah, blah look”. Justin was probably her best accessory and helped to liven up what to me was just another forgettable attempt on Jennifer’s part.

She makes red look beige, somehow.

      WORD, july.
This is way too much dress for that same ol’, same ol’ hair. And it’s not even a great dress. The only thing it has going for it is a color; it looks like a hunk of bright coral red satin wedding dress from David’s.

She is the personification of the word beige, to me.

Loved this. Her hair was blown-out beautifully but would have been so elegant in an up-do. She can really pull that off and it’s a shame she doesn’t do it more often…. oh well. Baby Steps.

I was excited that it wasn’t a black Calvin Klein. I wanted to smack the idiots at E! who kept saying she should have worn black. She rarely wears color. It’s a nice change even if the dress is a safe choice in style.

Yes, why does she wear so much black? It doesn’t flatter her at all.

She looks her best in white, and in color, she looks absolutely terrific in this great big colorful wonder. It’s spectacular and simple all in one (love the silouette), and my only criticism is that she might have done something new with her hair. If she didn’t want to put it up, she could have put all or part of it back, something other than her usual look.

      • Lauren

I totally agree about her hair. She always wears her hair down, but I guess we will have to rejoice in the fact that she stepped away from black. Baby steps!

I love her California Cool Girl style unreservedly. Unfortunately, it does not always translate into formal, red carpet events. Still, I thought she looked very good overall.

I hate it; she’s like the world’s oldest surfer girl. How can she stand looking the SAME all the time? She’s the long-haired version of Dorothy Hamill.

Does she have some horrible scar on her neck or something? She NEVER wears her hair up.

She has her hair up so rarely that my Oscar party group decided she’s the new Goldie Hawn. I don’t think that totally cute ponytail would have worked for this event…but something else?

I think… for someone who seems to bristle at memories of The Rachel, she seems very committed to her hair being her Major Feature.

All right, well, as someone who also never puts her hair up for any occasion, I will step in and defend her. In my case, the ratio of flattering to unflattering photos takes a really bad turn when my hair’s up. I’m guessing that Jen (and the Duchess?) noticed similar trends and just feel more confident and beautiful that way. So good on them.

Also, that red dress was reeeally pretty up close on TV! It loses a little in photos, methinks.

Agree! And I think she a issues with her chin and her jaws so she must feel more confortable having her hair like that!

    • JillC
      +6

I don’t think she has the right features to wear her hair up. Her facial features are rather sharp and angular (nose, chin), definitely not classically beautiful. The hair and body are what she’s known for. She’ll probably stick with the bleached, flat-ironed, and tanned look as long as she can get away with it. For the most part it works for her, and at least she didn’t go out and get a new face like her best friend did.

      • Bianca
        +1

I think you need to look at her a little bit harder–she’s had PLENTY of work done, but with her bone structure, it’s not as obvious as Courtney’s (or she has a better surgeon). And she’s getting to the point where she won’t be able to get away with her beach girl look, unless she really does aspire to be the new Goldie Hawn for some odd reason.

    yeah…it’s a red…dress…the red colour is…bright? i guess?

i think she was going for simple and understated, but to me it comes off as boring and “can’t be bothered”.

  9. Kara

Points for color but meh otherwise (I generally find Aniston pretty meh). And I really wish she’d done something with her hair – it looks uncombed.

    • Nancy
      +2

Yes. Stringy hair. Wrinkled dress. The dress is out of her wheelhouse. She is. To sophisticated enough to,wear this. She looks like she is wearing her momma’s gown for dress up. I don’t like this at all on her.

  10. Sajorina
    +5

She looks FINE and unlike herself! The dress is beautiful and the color is great! I give her props for trying something different with the dress, but she should’ve taken it all the way and do something else with her hair and makeup! A chignon? A smokey eye? A colorful lipstick? Something!

  11. Helen

Eh. It’s all right, I guess. She just always looks the same no matter what she’s wearing.

I think the ballgown was too much. She isn’t an Oscar level actress and I’m not sure why she was asked to present. At the GGs this would have been fine.

How can anyone suggest that Octavia’s gown was over the top when she is a returning winner and presenter.

    • ringthing
      +9

I don’t get Aniston’s presence, either. Friends was what, 15 years ago? She’s made some forgettable movies, she was married to and dumped by Brad Pitt. The end. Still, she looks nice enough, even though her hair never changes.

      • Nancy

The best thing that ever happened to Jennifer Aniston was Angelina Jolie.

        Yes. I went there. :)

No kidding; she has ridden that horse for years now. I wonder what happens once she gets hitched, and she won’t be able to be the abandoned spinster anymore.

Jennifer looked fantastic aside from the overplayed hairstyle. When did GFY become a cockroach nest of Brangieloons? Note to self.

    • Heather

Over-the-top is one thing, but over-the-top to the point that it becomes unflattering is a problem, and that’s where Octavia fell for me.

I love that she went with a different silhouette than her usual and I like that she chose a colour – but on the very, very rare occasion that some does wear colour, why is it always red? Seriously, that woman’s red carpet wardrobe is 80% black, 15% neutral, 5% red. And please, PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy, try something different with the hair!

  14. Kate

I thought it was fine on the red carpet but did odd things to her bust when she was presenting.

I sort of think this feels too young for her? It just doesn’t…fit. Not tailoring wise, just looks wise in general.

And yeah, the hair is much too casual.

    • mauxxo

My thoughts exactly. She looks pretty in the color, but the dress is just too young for her. This is a Hathaway/Seyfried/Lawrence gown.

I think the ballgown was too much (since this isn’t her usual silhouette). She isn’t an Oscar level actress and I’m not sure why she was asked to present. At the GGs this would have been fine.

I adore the color and the fact that she wore one. And she’s a pretty girl…but my husband was watching Babs sing and said, “Is it me, or could Aniston play her in a few years?” and now that’s all I can see.

This dress totally looked deep orange on my computer screen last night. But I guess it’s actually red? That’s kind of disappointing – I loved it because the color was (I thought) so unusual. While red was pretty unique on the blah carpet last night, it’s still a very safe color – too safe for so simple a cut. Either pick a riskier color or a riskier silhouette.

  20. Soapstef

I love her! She’s so…..me in her reluctance to change. I’ll take the full skirt for now and dare her to try a new do next year. We won’t get it, but it makes me feel better to think she might let go for a minute in a weak moment. LOL.

her hair is the same as shots of her getting coffee on a saturday…she should make some effort. it was also frizzy on top (very evident on stage)….yes, the dress is progress but she has a gazillion dollars to get a bit more creative from the neck up

When she does wear a color it’s always red. I’d love to see her in something emerald green or royal blue or purple or…yellow! Remember her yellow strapless dress in Friends? Loved that dress and it was really cute on her. She’s just so amazingly boring when it comes to style and with that hair, face and body she has no excuse!

  27. Cat

I am so happy she wore a color! The silhouette is pretty safe, though, and I’m kind of meh about it, but I’ll just be happy it’s not black. I wish she would do something with her hair. It’s been this way since Friends went off the air.

  28. Lucasta

I kind of feel like the beach hair and the black/white/neutral/red thing is just going to be her thing forever. I mean, we don’t expect Helena Bonham Carter to start showing up places looking sane or SWINTON to wear a twinset and pearls. Perhaps it is just as much of a stretch to expect Aniston to wear an updo or, like, teal.

  29. Lucasta

I meant to add that I think she generally looks great and looks really lovely here. I kind of appreciate her having a personal style and sticking to it, boring though it may be.

Full disclosure up front: I cannot stand Jennifer Aniston. I would walk 500 miles to avoid watching her in anything, and she single-handedly broke my habit of buying the weekly mags when I made a promise to stop buying anything that had her photo or name on the cover of it. (Actually, I probably owe her for that. I’ve saved thousands over the years.)
That being said, you can generally count on her to wear something that at least flatters her. Yeah, it’s usually the same black/beige sheath/mini, but 9 times out of 10 she looks pretty good.
This? This is not good. This does not flatter her. A ballgown does not belong on her body. And that color is okay, I guess, but not on that ballgown. Which we’ve already established does not look good on her body.
The thing that bugs the most is her hair. It’s the same hair she wears every. single. day. And with the heaviness of the dress, I think the hair would have been better up.

Heh, I sort of did the same thing … only it was any mag with ANY Jennifer on it after US Weekly went what felt like 6 straight months rotating between Aniston, Garner, and Lopez as their ONLY covers.

this awsome Necklaces would suit her https://fashion2electronics.com/Jewelry/Fashion-and-Retro-Style-Colorful-Faux-Jewels-Decorated-Necklace

I like that her hair is down, if it was up it would be too serious/dressy/trying too hard. But I do think it is too blond. For the first time I think she really looks great – breezy and fun.

  35. Franziska
    +3

I loved this dress on Jennifer and I didn’t mind her hair being down. Maybe she simply doesn’t like her hair being up because she thinks her ears are too big or it makes her chin stick out or any other kind of insecurity that good looking women always seem to have.

  36. APH

I’d like to know how many thousands she’s paid her stylist to make her hair look EXACTLY the same at every event. Blow it straight. That’s it. YAWN.

I thought she looked beautiful, and I liked this better than 90% of what was on the red carpet. Not risky, but classic, beautiful shape and color, and she looked happy and seemed to be having a good time. She’s not a “major” movie actress who takes herself so seriously, so no need for the formal updo if it doesn’t make her feel good. i haaaate wearing my hair up – you have to work with what you feel good in.

When I first saw the colour on her, I was startled into liking it — at last! but now, not as much. As others have said, like her or not, she always looks good, or good enough, in her black/white/grey/beige. Aside from the colour, which is okay but not great on her, this gown is sadly simple for a woman of her age.

Re.: her hair. She will never, ever, give this style up, and alter her “girl” next door image. Face it, that’s all she’s got.

Why was she even invited to the Oscars, nothing she does is Oscar worthy. Just a desperate attempt at publicity on her part. So sick of her. Used to like her on Friends, but unfortunatelyshe’s used up you 15 minutes of fame. Enjoy your life gracefully and disappear.

  45. Kerrina

She was indeed a hit of color, and she looked so great! She always looks great. People sound bored with her, but she’s been the picture of simplicity for well over a decade, and serving as a more natural inspiration for women I appreciate her style as well as her fabulous sense of humor. It disappoints me to read negative things about her when I believe she’s worthy of only kind words, but that’s what makes the world go ’round, I guess. I’m so happy for her, and hope nothing but goodness is in store for her and Justin.
