Oscars Well Played: Gwyneth Paltrow

well-played

I would just like to formally thank Gwyneth Paltrow for wearing a mother-f’ing cape to the Oscars, like a boss.

I like the cape, but to be honest, I’m more interested in looking at the woman in the beautiful pink Sari. Sorry Goop.

That sari is awesome. The cape is…very GOOP.

For serious, GFY needs to show more love for the amazing South Asian styles last night.

I was at first terrified by the sight of a woman’s stomach on the red carpet, and then I was all, “Oh, it’s a sari.” Then I was all, “man, that’s a gorgeous shade of pink!!! Why didn’t Goop where that shade???” Result? Saris 1, Goop 0. Next time, Goop (oh, and next time look into better hair)!

I’m saying! Sari Girl is totally stealing this photo. She looks positively amazing.

My thoughts, exactly! I couldn’t take my eyes off the sari and how naturally the lady wears something that beautiful!

It’s not just the cape – it’s a white cape – only the Goopster can keep that thing clean and unwrinkled. She is obviously a really chic robot.

  3. Suzanne

She rocked this look for Best Dressed, in my opinion. This was so cool it overshadowed her disappointing hair-don’t.

  4. Lisa

Yeah, she’s totes being upstaged by the lady in the sari in the first picture

    Sorry goop

I agree, but the outfit goes limp without the cape, the pony-tail is pathetic, and Sari-Lady beats the hell out of her,

Honestly, I think the Fug Girls have somehow turned me around on Gwyneth… I almost kind of love her again? This cape and dress I think sealed the deal for me.

      GOOP for the win!!!

  6. Miss Tee

Are you kidding me? She’s wearing a g.d. CAPE. A CAPE. Basically she was like, “Oh, I know what will get people to talk about me…I’ll wear a CAPE! YES, because I need all the attention focused on me! ME ME ME ME ME!!! I mean, I know I haven’t done anything good in YEARS, but people must pay attention to me anyway. ME! And my CAPE!” Gross. And do something with your hair, G. Pal.

      • Jen
        0

yes! but big! with feathers! and gold embroidery! and … yes, it’ll be a mix of Jessica’s Oscar dress and Gwyneth’s cape and…

      • Sandala

and that will most certainly not be a good thing.

    • Kristen from MA

Yes, exactly! I just can’t stand her and her constant need for attention.

Also, I hate the little shoulder-pads-as-sleeves. Those are just weird.

    • Miss Tee

Sorry for the rant. I just really hate her. And her stupid cape. :D

      • Kit

LOL I disagree with you but thank you heartily for your comments which made me laugh out loud. (My office mates are used to it, thankfully.) :D

      • Shannon
        0

No, I totes agree with everything you said, Miss Tee! I hate, hate, hate the cape! It is such an attention whore thing to wear, and that’s why I was not shocked to see it on the Goopster, since EVERYTHING has to be about her. I loathe everything about it. The dress itself (except for the sleeves) is nice, if bland, but the cape just totally puts it into WTF territory. And her hair looks like shit.

In other news, I also love the sari. I live in Houston, which has a large SE Asia population, and we have lots of sari stores. Some of the saris are so gorgeous they make me squee. If I weren’t a parchment white redhead who’d look like a complete dumbass, I’d love to try wearing one.

    • debra
      0

good for you Miss Tee…I CANNOT STAND HER AND WHY THE HELL IS SHE EVEN AT THE OSCARS…..she just cant stand not having the light shine on just her and her alone and come on…DO YOUR HAIR…jesus any 5th grader can pull that look off…too much money..not enough style…RANT ON MISS TEE!!!!!

As much as I absolutely CANNOT STAND Gwyneth Paltrow, I have to say that, except for the hair, she looked pretty great. I’ve seen her on a couple of worst dressed lists this morning because of the cape, but, for pete’s sake, it was apparently chilly (you know, for southern CA) and the cape was not a permanent part of the dress, so I can’t understand the hate for the cape.

    • eee
      0

Agreed on all counts (including not liking her). When I saw her doing a red carpet interview, she was all “It’s kind of COLD, people.” At least it works with the outfit. …Though did she KNOW it was going to be cold, and chose a dress with a cape just in case? Would she have still worn this had it been warm out?

I covet that giant cuff bracelet.

  8. Faye

I am more excited that Penelope Cruz is totally channeling Sophia Loren with that hair!

    • Kit
      0

I thought it was very Grace Kelly actually. I loved her dress AND her hair, but loved her dress even more when she walked out on stage. When she moved – that thing was a dream.

      • Softwear
        0

I don’t know, the whole thing had kind of a quinceanera vibe to it. Which is great – if you happen to be 15. Penelope usually has killer style, this seemed too sweet for her. She’s a fierce, independent woman with a hot bod – not a 15-year-old at a birthday party (even a very fancy birthday party).

  9. amys
    0

She looks very sleek, but I loathe the padded cap sleeves.

  10. taylor
    0

I saw her first on stage, so I missed the cape deployment. I like it, but I don’t like the dress. I hate the “sleeves” and the way the fabric pulls over one breast to her shoulder. I also really don’t like her hair like that. Not for something as formal as the Oscars, anyway. BUT, the cape is pretty cool.

    • Eva
      0

Completely agree. Even though I see, like everybody else, that the cape is pretty much a “look at me, look at me” she pulls it off in style and it’s a very sophisticated and simple cape. I like the way it looks. Funnily enough, I don’t like the dress without the cape.

  11. Lynnette
    0

I haven’t seen it anywhere, but I’ll assume I’m not the first to dub her “SUPERGOOP” for the cape. I propose we refer to her in that fashion from now on. I can’t even decide if I liked it or not. I mean, it’s a cape! It’s like deciding whether you like the decorative feathered wings on someone’s luxury car. The hair was an awful mistake.

  12. Jenny
    0

I LOVE this. She’s just wearing the shit out of it, with her height and blondness, fit body, and minimal jewelry. It’s perfect on her but no one else could EVER where this and have it work.

  13. Kit
    0

It was so fun talking about this last night while you were live blogging:

That one poster who was just shrieking (I imagine) “Capppppppe! CAPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEE. CAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEeeeeeeee!” was hilarious – as was the poster who thought it was an infringment of her civil rights that she missed seeing Goopy in said cape. lol

Anyway – that aside – there was a whole of mixed reaction to this ensemble. I so heartily dislke the self-crowned princess of the people that I wanted her to miserably fail, have terrible zombie makeup or droopy boobs as in past Oscar outings; but sadly for me, it’s my favourite look of the night.

If it hadn’t been for her hair (which I hated) this would have been flawless. :(

  14. Jenny
    0

And I disagree about her hair. If she’d worn it up, she would’ve looked old fashioned. If she’s worn it loose or in a high ponytail, it would’ve distracted from the lines of the outfit, so it works but only in this instance.

    • Billie
      0

I agree, but I just wish it was a tighter ponytail. With the elastic part way down like that, it looked like she reached into the back of her bathroom drawer and the only thing she found was an old hair tie that had lost all of it’s elasticity.

  15. Allison
    0

Love the dress/cape, not keen on the hair… it looks like when I work out and my ponytail comes loose.

  16. Jen
    0

I actually liked how the dress appeared to be one-shouldered under the cape, and then — actually had sleeves. The cap sleeves don’t bother me … and her hair — anything more formal might’ve looked TryingTooHard. I thought she pulled off a great minimalist look, and one that most folks could never even attempt. She is The Gwyneth.

(Shailene’s white dress, for example, I liked, but I thought it aged her about 20 years in a Katherine Ross as Stepford Wife kind of way — I preferred Shailene in her after-party outfit)

  17. Sajorina
    0

YES!!! She is wearing a motherf’ing cape! AWESOME! I love this whole ensemble… The dress is beautiful and classy by itself (and perfectly lined, not see through at all) and the cape adds that somethin’ somethin’ that makes you say “Wow!” I like that her makeup is neutral & simple! I like that her hair was in a ponytail, but I would’ve preferred a high one like Sandra Bullock’s! And, those pieces of jewelry are to die for! COVET! But, I still would’ve liked for her to have worn earrings, like Penelope’s! FAB, Gwynnie!

  18. Josephine
    0

This is very, very nice, and I don’t think it was any sort of gauche attention-grab at all. Formal-wear with its own beautifully-matched outerwear/cover-up used to be quite common, and this is very much in that mid-century vein. It simple, she’s not showing a lot of skin, it’s white, and it suits her body. Full disclosure: I’m neither Team GOOP nor Team anti-GOOP. I think she’s quite a good actor IF cast correctly, and I don’t give even half a hoot about her personally.

…That said, I really wish she’d done something else with her hair. This looks a bit forced-casual, whereas an old-fashioned up-do would have highlighted the retrofuturistic design sense of the dress. She would have had a little tiny bit of a Star Trek-or-Bewitched vibe, and that would have been super neat.

  19. Melly
    0

I don’t like the dress without the cape, but even with the cape the bodice reminds me of the wrapping she used to squish her breasts in Shakespeare in Love.

  20. CJ
    0

So grateful she didn’t wear a metallic Calvin Klein column dress!

She looks lovely here. Don’t love the cape, but I am impressed by its fit (that sounds asinine to talk about how a cape fits, but look at it! It truly drapes her shoulders and back PERFECTLY) and bowled over that she is pulling off A CAPE. Unabashedly loved it sans cape during the show.

  21. Halo
    0

She used to bug me, but now I’m finding her highly amusing. She was definitely the most interesting last night, which was a fashion snooze, but I will say the dress wasn’t as interesting once she removed the cape. The cape was amazing.

    • Molly
      0

I agree. The dress is not working without the cape to cover its flaws. The cape smooths over the goofy sleeves and makes the neck line less obvious. It’s sort of like icing covering all the errors in the cake.

  22. Tripta

Who IS the woman in a sari?

    • Kit
      0

Likely someone with the woman who won “Best Documentary” which came out of Pakistan.

  23. Emily
    0

I’m not generally her fan. However, she looks amazing and the cape is cool. And I kinda like that she said on the red carpet that she and Cameron Diaz are super buddies and got ready together before the show. That amuses me. They seem like a really unlikely pair. But I love BFFs like that, and Michelle Willams and Busy Philipps. It’s cute.

  24. Lauren

Is the tweeter in the background of the second photo one of the Tilly twins (Jennifer or Meg)?

    • Heironyms.
      0

I was thinking the same. Looks like Jennifer to me. (They’re not actually twins, but they do look a lot alike, don’t they?)

  25. Amanda

Why are people excited about a cape? I must not understand fashion, because I think she looks ridiculous.

  26. Kristan
    0

Are we ignoring the fact that she was almost Oompa Loompa orange, and her hair was almost white? If yes, then, okay, her dress looked great.

I will say I thought it was cute how she talked about being BFF with Cameron Diaz and getting ready together. :)

  27. Natalie
    0

Love the Goop here. Or, as Lynette stated “SUPERGOOP”.

Am I the only one that thinks it’s a little weird that Penelope is hugging her UNDER the CAPE? I mean, if I hug someone with an open coat on, my hands don’t go under the coat. Are there different rules for a cape? I NEED ANSWERS!

    • LisaP
      0

I just read every single comment to see if anyone else noticed the “under the cap” hug! That is my only takeaway from these photos too!

  28. Carla
    0

I am most impressed by the fact that she allowed Penelope Cruz – or anyone wearing Oscar-level makeup – to hug her when she’s wearing all that white!

  29. Bella

She looks good and had the brains to wear something to keep her warm on a chilly night.

  31. Annie

I FLOVE this. I wondered how Tom Ford managed to give the cape (CAPE!) structure in the shoulders until I noticed the heavy cap sleeves. So very Star-Trek chic. (Speaking of Star Trek, Zoe Saldana would probably be the only other woman who could pull off this look.)

  32. Mel Duff
    0

Did anyone else think this was the Claire Danes at first? I think it was the “flatiron mishap / last-minute ponytail” hair.

    • Lilywise
      0

Yes, I first thought it was Claire Danes too. I’m not a GOOP fan, but I thought she looked amazing in both the dress and the cape. The hair didn’t bother me since it worked with the long, sleek lines. She and Penelope were my two nominees for best dressed — they both picked something that seemed to fit their personalities and style and wore the hell out of it.

  33. TaraMisu
    0

Kudos on the cape, but I’m not liking the dress underneath AT ALL. The bodice is wonky and the shoulder pads (??) are horrible. Her hair may be a touch too casual, but I bet she thought the cape would draw attention away from it….

    Also…. loving the sari lady!

  34. Mary

    SWINTON is proud.

  35. Erin

I think she look gorgeous and classic. That said, something seems to be going on with her roots in the third pic. Like she painted them white?

  36. Sarah

    She looks perfect!

  37. Elfrieda
    0

I love it because a) it’s a freakin’ cape at the Oscars b) she’s wearing it LIKE A BOSS as you say and c) it’s clearly a Celine Dion homage. But next time, lip color, please.

  38. Tara

I think this is the best I’ve ever seen Gwynnie look at an Oscars ceremony.

  39. lil d
    0

I feel like i should like this, because CAPE, but I just can’t get on board. The shoulders and the cuff and the overall severity combine to make it too much like something you wear in the Fortress of Solitude…

  40. ChaChaHeels
    0

That is the best thing Gwynnie’s ever worn to the Oscars. I loathe capes as a rule, but this is about the only time a cape looked not only appropriate, but stunning, too.

  41. Tracey
    0

I love capes and I am ambivalent about Gwyneth – I like pretty things at the Oscars… however, as soon as I saw this I felt she looked like an Ambassador from Alderaan who is about to get killed by Darth Vader. Sorry ladies, in theory this idea is great, in reality I have to disagree with the well-played.

  42. Sophia Loren
    0

I like the cape a lot. I like the name Supergoop even more. And I love the mix of Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren.

  43. Chasmosaur
    0

While I admit she’s wearing the hell out of it, I just don’t know that I like it. Clingy white jersey just feels so Casual Hamptons Wedding at “The Cottage” (which is actually a mansion) to me.

  44. corriner

    SUPERGOOP to the rescue!

  45. wordphreak
    0

I would like to thank Gwyneth Paltrow for finally covering up. If she actually went up a size (or just got it tailored, for god’s sake we all know she can afford it) and it weren’t so tight around the stomach, I (and she) would breathe easier. We all know you’re in your 40′s and still hot, Gwynnie. You can stop trying so hard to convince us.

  46. FT

I loved the dress on her. Very Old Hollywood. Didn’t love the hair so much, but it was fine.

  47. Regina

Way to go Gywnnie. A m’fing Cape.

But who is that woman in that amazing sari behind her and can we get a full length picture of that?

love the cape but LOVE the diamond cuff. that thing has enough power to broker a middle eastern peace treaty.

  49. Rachel

Works with the cape; awfully awkward without. Those shoulders just don’t look good on anyone.

  52. Katharine
    0

I really like the dress with the cape, although I also think that Rooney Mara would have done better to go to Tom Ford and get this rather than go wherever she did go and get the droopy thing she did wear.

Hate the dress without the cape though. Those sleeves with their shoulder-tumours are SO ugly.

  53. The Other Molly
    0

    Definite gauche attention-grab.
But then, that is the GOOP way.
Negative 100 points for the helmet hair.

  54. RD
    0

At first glance I thought she had cut her hair to a sleek bob, which combined with the MF cape made her a top contender for best dressed. I shouldn’t have looked at the other pictures.

  55. Bubba

Dress is beautiful on here, but not sold on the cape. Not loving the hair and make up though – she is too washed out on top.

More color on the lips, not too red but SOMETHING would have helped. Oh well, maybe she isn’t perfection after all but still pretty good!

Can’t post on your note about it here, but the Vulture story is a misnomer. Where is your “best” and “worst”?? It’s just a slideshow, with no comments from the Fug Girls. I feel cheated.

  59. Siouxi
    0

I’ve got to say, I actually like the dress but the cape is throwing me off. If it was chilly, couldn’t she wear a shawl or something. It’s just so weird.

Which is beside the point as my only real question is who is the stunner in the amazing sari??

    • Siouxi

I take it back, after another look I now fully hate the shoulderpads/sleeves wannabes. Nasty. Ruins the clean lines she was trying to achieve.

It’s the Oscars, an attention grabbing Lookitme event if ever there was one. I love her hair, I love her cape, but I’m not 100% on board with the capeless shoulder pad look.

  63. fritanga
    0

I still think she looks like this white thing emerging from a cocoon.

Her hair looks like dry fried straw, which is unconscionable considering her “perfect” diet and how long she probably took to achieve this look.

Best look Gwynnie has brought to the Oscars, ever. Well done, indeed.

Ugh, that cape was ridiculous. I would have liked to see the actual gown, not her outer wear.

    • Clementine
      0

Okay, just saw it without the cape. Is it just me or do her boobs look pushed to one side because of the gathers? I don’t get it. I think it looks terrible. Her “I just took my kids to the park” ponytail isn’t helping matters.

  67. maria
    0

This is just SO much better than anything she has worn before. She needs to thank Tom Ford for designing a neckline that doesn’t make her look like the hollow-chested creature she was in that horrible pink thing she wore when she won. I’m not a big fan of GP but she looked freaking great last night!

  68. Chrissy
    0

I don’t care much for this. The fact that she wore a cape is the only thing going for it. Her hair is dull, the color is blah, it washes her out, which is easy to do, and it’s just so plain. In another picture I saw of her in this it wasn’t flattering to her tummy area and gave her a little pot belly. Maybe I’m just not seeing the positive side of it because I’m not crazy about her in general. But I do have to say it’s better than alot of her choices.

  69. Shiitake

    Pink sari: goreous
Goop: boring with or without the cape

I don’t want to like her…. but then she does these things that make me think she’s a little bit awesome and then I don’t want to like her….and I think that she brings out the mean girl in me…and I totally don’t like that so then I go back to not liking her…and then. She. Wears.A. Cape…..and it looks good….. and then I read some quote of hers about how she works HARD to look like that and it isn’t easy….and then I like her again….damn you Paltrow

  71. DT

The cape is an unnecessary accessory. Might as just wear a “fashion snuggie”.

  73. Laura Del Toro

I don’t hate on the cape and I think it looks good on her. Besides, the only place you could wear a cape would be the Academy Awards…
…HOWEVER I thought she might then hand out some medals of bravery to the Rebel Alliance for destroying the Death Star.
    I’m just sayin’.

To department stores that make knock off versions of Oscar dresses:

You need to start with this dress/cape combo right now (and in a color please rather than white) I so want a cape! (I don’t care what Edna Mode would say)

I’m one of the last to have a kind word about Gwyneth. Though I’ll say my hatred is not irrational, but earned. And when I heard she was wearing a cape, I was coiled into an about-to-burst ball of glee as I assumed this was going to be wearing an All-Gwyneth Pure Ego Grab for Bold, imagining a short should blade length back panel of navy or red vinyl gathered at her throat by a gold rope. I really expected she was going to go full idiot and it would be a triumph of failure.

But alas, I was wrong and thought she look extraordinary last night. Exactly how someone of her stature should look. Tom Ford has worked a miracle here. I loved all of it the cape, the dress by itself, her hair, THE CUFF. Oh, the cuff. I give Tom Ford all credit here, but I do have to say, in the past year, Gwyneth has seriously upped her game and we’re all the better for it. Best look of the night.

As others have said, I don’t like the shoulders of the dress. I really like the cape, though.

  82. Janis

Just this side of mummy wrappings. Good mummy wrappings. The cape makes the outfit.

Oh, people, what’s with the “look at me!” hate? The whole point of women’s eveningwear is to get people to look at you (in a ladylike, non-skeezy way.)
If you can’t handle it, stay home and wear something environmentally friendly.

  83. Jenni

Love the dress, not the cape. It seems a little too Magneto.

I didn’t see her on the red carpet so when I saw her presenting I liked the dress. I think it was one of the best of the night. And then I saw the pictures of the cape. AWESOME. People can front all they want but that cape was badass and she owned it.
