Reese Witherspoon and Tina Fey Both Pick Purple for Oscars

I’m quite delighted we got two deep purple gowns, because it’s one of my favorite colors, but I wish they had not been quite SO of-a-piece. Reese Witherspoon’s version is from Oscar de la Renta, and I’ll say it up front: It’s not my favorite of the two.

I don’t think I would be that hot on it anyway, even if I hadn’t already seen Tina’s and judged to be lovelier. The cups somehow just come off like someone glued on recycled old shoulder pads. It’s not a plot twist I particularly needed.

Tina’s is Versace, and it’s a rare instance when Mr. de la Renta’s storied house loses that particular fight, but here we are:

She looks flawless and regal. The necklace in particular gives it that extravagantly royal feeling; I actually WISH the Duchess of Cambridge would turn up in something that unimpeachably dishy. Lord knows she’s got the shoulders for it, although I have to say, Tina’s divine hourglass would be a nigh on impossible act to follow.

I can’t entirely sort out why Tina changed for the post-party, although at least she picked another lovely color:

I generally thought the idea of swapping your outfit was to spare a train from being trampled, but this one is just as endangered. So that leaves me with: She was JUST Spanxed enough at the telecast that she preferred to breathe for the post-party. I can get behind that.
