Oscars Fug or Fab Carpet, Plus Independent Spirit WTF Carpet: Michelle Williams PLUS Well Played Busy Philipps (phew)

well-played

I do love that Michelle Williams and Busy Philipps are best friends. It makes sense to me that Michelle is taking Busy with her to all these events. If you’re not seriously dating someone, why not bring your best friend to the Oscars with you? You know you’ll be able to roll your eyes at her during appropo moments and if you start crying in the car on the way home, she’ll just pat you on the arm and turn up the Kelly Clarkson and never speak of it again. It’s also a relief to see that Busy has bounced back from that crackpot hippie dress she wore to the SAGs and looks fantastic. But what of Michelle?

What'd you think?

Hmm. I might have to take back my loved it because of the nude back. Ick! The front is to die for, though. I even love the twee pin. Her daughter probably said she needed some sparkles.

Totally agreed on the back, it ruins it! There was enough going on elsewhere

        0

I had the exact same thought! I loved it when I first saw her but then she started to turn…and that nude panel was so ugly! Nothing chic about it. I have no idea why it was there. It completely ruined the look.

The waist ruffle ruined it. Why not chop that shit off and just continue the skirt “pattern” the entire way up. At least it doesn’t look like something a third grader would wear, I guess.

Oh, and I HATE HATE HATE the back. Why do designers do that? Did they run out of fabric? Out of time? Did their little fingers turn to nubs and physically couldnt finish it? It makes me angry.

it looks realllly bad from the back: http://stylefrizz.com/201202/michelle-williams-in-louis-vuitton-red-dress-for-2012-oscars/
    busy looks amazing though

In that shot of the back it kind of looks like the pelpum is removable? There is a little gap where more beige is showing through. Also, too much zipper. Hide zippers! Sheesh!

Thanks for the link to the back…I was really curious and it’s worse than I anticipated! But otherwise I really like the dress on her. It’s pretty and colorful and different and not too twee. Over all lovely.

It was way better than I expected, and maybe if it had a real back, I’d like it wholeheartedly. It was a nice, adult woman look that flattered her, so that’s a nice departure from her customary twee Peter Pan collars. If I just liked the dress more, I’d say it was perfect. Her face and jewelry are lovely.

I love the dress, but with some reservations: I dislike the pin, and I think she either should have gone for the nude back or the peplum, both is a little too much. But she’s carrying it off so well that these are but minor gripes. Overall she’s stunning.

I actually liked the shorts suit at the Spirit Awards — thought it was very Jean Seberg & something that only Michelle could really pull off, and why not? the Spirit Awards had many far-more-absurd outfits.

Busy looked great last night, but when I saw her on the red carpet, every single time she pursed her mouth like she was sucking a lime, and it spoiled the look for me — glad to see you have these happier photos! and yes, I love that we are seeing celebs bringing friends, nanas, you name it…

    • Kit

I thought the same thing about Busy too! (Well, thought worse of it, actually, but “sucking limes” will do.)

I think this blog might have a strict no-shorts policy, but I too really like them on her. By the way, you wouldn’t be Annie, my well-dressed former colleague, would you?

I know the Fug Girls hate shorts suits, but I don’t get why, because I really think Michelle’s look here works beautifully – crisp, boyish and very chic.

That horrible mismatched pink purse is searing my retinas. And the dress is heinous. Hate the peplum, hate the corset back, hate the pin at the waist. FAIL.

I want to burn that peplum. Burn it with fire.

Also, ‘peplum’ does not sound like something you would want wrapped around your mid-section.

The awesome color is pretty much the only thing I like about this dress. Michelle’s face looks beautiful though.

    • Elissa
      0

100% agree. The color is great. She looks best in bold colors, like her Saffron Yellow oscar dress, AKA: the greatest oscar dress of all time, that she wore some years back when she went with Heath. But unfortunately, the color is the only thing right about this dress.

I don’t hate the bodice (until you get to the peplum) but it could have been so much better with just a few modifications.

Busy Philips, even well groomed, in a reasonable dress with interesting shoes, always looks like a hot mess. Why is this? If someone else had worn this outfit, we’d be all golf claps for them.

I think Busy Phillips is fug, with a stupid name (I HATE her name, she should date that Chord Overstreet guy, the only guy who has as stupid a name as hers), and her dresses are always awful. On top of that, I have no idea who she even is, and why she is always at the award shows.

      • xtine

she was on dawson’s creek with michelle williams, freaks and geeks and now cougar town, and michelle always takes her as her +1 because they’re bffs. also, she’s awesome.

I was disappointed with Michelle Williams (although I liked the little brooch at her waist); but I could not disagree more about Busy! I thought she looked like crap (although yes, better than the at the Globes.)

And what was with the bitch-face she was giving constantly during Michelle’s interviews? Holy crap! I kept saying “Why is she so bitter and angry? Don’t come if you’re so jealous!”

    • Jessica
      0

I think that just might be her “I’m listening” face. I have seen myself in pictures when I am just listening to Heather talk and I look like I want to stab her in arm. I DO NOT.

      • GingerLover
        0

Scarlet, I think. (Flame coloured.) And it’s so her. I think we just must accept, this is her. (aND YES, BACK PANEL IS HIDEOUS.)

I hate the bow. Hate it. I’m so done with her hair cut. I don’t mind the idea of having a pink clutch with this, but in her case it just didn’t seem deliberate – the colours were too close without actually matching. I don’t know. The formal shorts were the best look. Formal shorts – as a concept – are ridiculous. But that particular example was well-deployed and her hair was better. I’m really so done with this hair cut. So I voted for formal shorts. Because the back of them didn’t have any awful surprises. So far as I know.

That back is hideous, and takes me from “meh” to “dear gods, NO.” The color is lovely, but the dress design is just bad.

  18. Dru
    0

Am I the only one who loves it? It looked 1000xbetter in motion, and I love that she wore a colour at all, because it looks so damn good against her skin (god, it feels like forever since Oscars 2006).

    • Fawn
      0

You are not alone. I loved it too, and I usually hate everything she wears. I even really liked the bow pin; it was very ‘her’ without making the whole thing look like something a 14 year old would wear.

      • Fiona

I love the pattern on Busy’s dress and most of the elements of Michelle’s dress too. But these two were stoned when they picked out their accessories.

  20. Halo

I love it. All of it: lingerie back, peplum, brooch at the waist. The clutch is a little weird, and I thought it might actually be Busy’s at first, to match the shoes. Busy looked great, too.

    1) Where did the lovely strawberry blond color go?

    2) The dress did not NEED a peplum. I recognize it’s a thing this year, but between the vibrant color and the textured tiering, nothing more was needed. It doesn’t add to the architecture, like SWINTON’s Golden Globes jacket (which provided a pseudo-peplum).

    3) I’m okay with pins at the waistline as a concept. But for custom couture in this color and texture? She should have had something massive and cool, not a tiny little bow.

    4) I recognize this front-back color blocking thing seems to be a trend right now. I don’t understand why, but okay. But on this dress? No. No, no, no.

Lose the peplum, continue the fabric around the back, and either ditch the pin or wear something large and interesting. I am giving her credit for not going completely twee and recognizing that she looks awesome in good color. And for smiling more often.

I LOVE IT!!! The dress is BEAUTIFUL, the color is delicious and it fits her perfectly! I love the hair & makeup! I love the necklace & the bow pin… WANT! But, I don’t get the pink croc clutch; it was better suited for Busy to carry it! Still, FAB! One of my BEST! Busy’s dress, hair & makeup are GREAT, but she lost me with the pink shoes and the blue & green earrings! And, I love Michelle’s ode to Zoe Hart at the Indie Spirit Awards! LOVE!!!

Good Lord. The back is utterly hideous. And so is the haircut. And the tarnished looking necklace.

      • Chasmosaur
        0

No, the necklace is fab. It’s obviously an antique, as those are mine/cushion cut diamonds. Settings weren’t as “blingy” then, and it’s not the best cut to bring out the best brilliance in a diamond. I thought the choice was excellent – simple and understated. Let the dress do the talking. A matching brooch at her waist would have been awesome.

Nina Garcia kept saying that Michelle Williams’ was her fave look of the night. I could NOT believe it. It’s a nice dress overall – and she’s looked worse – but this was definitely not her best look, or the best of the evening!

  26. Lynniekae
    0

Really like the color onscreen and in photos. Not feeling the style of the dress. She must have known she wasn’t going to win bc at least now this dress won’t be remembered in posterity. Her dress from last year (yellow?) was so much prettier.

  27. Martha Raab
    0

I like the pink clutch, and I like Busy’s pink shoes, but I don’t like that it seems to me that they planned to have the accessories match each other.

Also, Busy has no neck, and something going on here (the earrings?) gave the impression that she does, so I was impressed by that.

  28. witjunkie

In general, with Michelle, I think she would be better served to avoid anything with a visible seam at the waist. It makes her appear trunky and short. All one piece swooping from top to bottom would make her look tall and sleek. In my ever-so-humble opinion.

  29. TaraMisu

Throw me in the NOOOOOOO category when I saw the back…. ugh. I really liked it full frontal though. I think its a really nice departure from her usual 10 year old girl dresses….

  30. Beth
    0

I think that the pin is really a divisive detail. People are either loving it or hating it. Me, personally? I covet that diamond pin. I thought it was the best detail on the dress.

The back of the dress is hideous though, and why couldn’t it have just matched the front, I must ask?

  31. mj

I cannot stand the “cat that ate the canary” look on her face. All the time. It’s the mom in me, but I just know she’s up to something.

  32. Liz_bee
    0

Can I just say that this dress is wrangling her boobs in a weird way? I think the ruffle in the chestal region is too high or ends too early. Her breasts sit lower…it’s like when large-breasted ladies wear small tube-top bathing suits at the beach.

Other than that, I think the color is amazing! Let’s ignore the back and the wonky pin and pretend she nailed it. I even like the peplum (also I just learned what a peplum is).

  33. Dara

Dear Michelle: You are a fantastic, mature actress and a mother. Your talents have taken you from the second love interest on a crappy WB show to multiple Oscar nominations. Please stop dressing like some strange schoolgirl fantasy/anime character. Thx!

Had to Google Busy b/c I don’t remember her from DC. Must’ve been after I stopped watching religiously. I cannot believe all this time, I thought she was related to the Mamas & Papas Phillips.

I really like this dress, make the back the same beautiful coral fabric and not that dumb nude that looks like a horrible old bra, lose the metal bow and we are in business. I really like the peplum on her – give her a bit of shape and curve.

  36. DW

    I don’t mind the twee.

You know, not everyone’s a vixen or super chic. Zooeey Deschanel rocks the adorable geek thing. Williams just is kinda…twee.

Better than trying to be something she isn’t and looking like every other Hollywood carbon copy.

I like the dress, good colour, I’m all about a peplum, find the brooch inoffensive and am only slightly horrified by the back. All in all – not bad.

    • Dru
      0

I agree. A lot of people seem to find her twee because they hate her haircut and her 60s-ish style, but come on, she isn’t that bad when she isn’t wearing cloud dresses and daisy dresses – she’s pretty ok as far as levels of twee go. Not half as bad as Natalie Portman used to be, either (now THAT one used to dress twee with annoying regularity – horrifyingly, even while pregnant).

  37. Lisa

This is a virtual cornucopia of froof. A dress that’s a bright color like that needed maybe only one detail. It’s like that old rule: to make sure you’re not overaccessorized, take off one thing before you leave the house. In this case, she needed to take off three things: the pin, the ugly nude corseted back, and the peplum or the tail.

  38. Evalyn

Agree with all those who hated the back. I didn’t watch the carpet coverage so I didn’t see the back until a photo today – wish I had never seen it. I didn’t love the peplum but was ready to give her a B+ even with it – apparently the peplum is a trend – argh. Color – love, pin, like. But the back! Is awful! Downgraded to C+.

  41. gryt

I really like the color, it’s so unusual and… specific. Also, the color is incredibly flattering on her.

  42. Megan

Loved the color! It was so refreshing to see, especially as she’s mostly worn black-and-white at just about every damn event.

I still don’t like her hair, but I also realize that short of getting a wig/extensions, there isn’t much she can do with it.

  43. Jen S 2.0

WTF with the purse? It ws all I could see last night. And I hadn’t seen the back until now. I was okay with the dress — okay with, not in love with, but tolerating — but now I am decidedly not on board.

I feel like I like her more because she’s bffs with Busy Phillips. I think Busy is hilarious, and a DELIGHT in the same way that what’s his nuts from The Good Wife is. And if Michelle is super close with Busy that gives me hope that I would like Michelle if I met her.

    • mepe

Me too!! I think it’s awesome that she brings Busy as her plus one. I bet Busy is just a hoot to hang out with…and I bet it’s fun to have somebody to gossip with at these events! I want Busy as my BFF!

  46. mepe

I think the peplum was a great way for her to add a cute defining waist line to her figure…her lack of waist had been a criticism of her past dresses. Plus I bet it’s a great place to hide a flask! I’m just so glad she wore a bright cheery color.

  47. KelseyA

Here is what I learned from last night’s Oscars: I hate peplums. I hate the way they look, I hate the word, I HATE THEM.

    Also, Busy for best-dressed!

  48. Claire L

I loved it till I saw the back ICK! I love the little jeweled bow …but then I do that with my cardigans so that I don’t look like a librarian ( Ok… maybe a little like a librarian, but more like a naughty 1950s librarian so it works)……..
I love the pink and tangerine together. I’ve been seeing it show up all over the place and it really works for me…..all of that said….. the back completely ruins the dress.

I think bringing Busy is a bit played out at this point. I mean, Busy was the third wheel for Michelle and Heath back during Brokeback Mountain time. Oh, and didn’t like the dress.

  52. Charlotte
    0

In the cover photo, it looks like the lady with the scarf in the background is holding a leash that attaches to the bow brooch on Michelle’s dress. The bow rather looks likes like a little dog, also; a little dog that saw the tummy ruff and went to attack it. The lady holding the leash is as blissfully unaware as Michelle. This should have meant the dog had time to rip it off before that picture was taken. Alas.

    • LibraryChick
      0

I cannot “unsee” the leash now, and it does look attached to the bow, even though I know it’s just one of those velvet ropes. The “bandeau” part of the bodice does not appear to provide adequate support, and I agree with the “backy hose” critics.

  53. Elspeth Too

I could do without the pin but overall I think MW rocked it .

What I like most about Busy’s gown is that it’s pretty AND subdued. Nothing says awesome girlfriend like being willing to play sartorial bridesmaid on your bff’s big night.

Oh goodness. I’ve suddenly got an incredibly strong Natalie Wood vibe from Michelle Williams. I think it’s the expression in the first pic – slight smile, lowered eyes…..TOTALLY different colouring, an’ all that, but……Yeah, I’ll be off now……

  56. LizC

I liked Michelle’s dress well enough, even though I’m never a fan of the extra ruffle thingy, until I saw the back. It’s like they ran out of red fabric.
