Oscars Fug or Fab Carpet: Glenn Close

Okay, I know People Are Divided about this dress, but look at her expression! Irrepressible!

As far as the dress goes, I like it. I think it’s age appropriate and elegant on her. Classy. A good color. It fits. It’s well-constructed. I’m considering this one a win. The jacket is a bit unusual, but I think it works for her. I AM POWERLESS BEFORE YOUR CHARMS, GLENN.

What do you think?

I thought her jacket was a particularly inspired choice, since she was nominated for her role in Albert Nobb.

Not only is it fab, the tux jacket is a cheeky nod to the role she was nominated for – a woman who pretends to be a man. Well done!

From the thighs up, she’s a total win. But I don’t love the giant trainfluff thing. It nearly ruins an otherwise flawless look.

I actually didn’t see the giant trainfluff at first, and was mentally congratulating Zac Posen on making such a flattering, un-fussy dress.

Damn you, photographs from the side.

Twitter ruined this dress for me (but I still voted it Fab). As soon as I read someone calling it “business mermaid” that was all I could see. Glenn would make a beautiful CEO of Under the Sea Industries, however, so it’s still an overall win for me.

Same here! Business Mermaid-I agree completely!

Business Mermaid very nearly made me spit my afternoon pick-me-up all over my screen.

I saw that on Twitter as well. Before I’d seen the dress. It made me so excited to see it. It was pretty spot-on. And hilarious.

She looked like a million bucks. I loved it.

It takes a lot of confidence and sheer star power to make this work. Glenn obv. has both, in spades. I loved it.

I thought it was too much jacket – it’s a lot of dress as it is; a smaller jacket would have made the look less overwhelming.

Honestly, a cropped *black* tux-inspired jacket that hit her at the waist? Could have been really cute. But the green jacket with green dress is a lot.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! The dress is beautiful, a great color, interesting, age appropriate, dramatic and flattering! She looks STUNNING! Her hair & makeup are simple and natural, but it works! And, her attitude sells the hell out of it! FAB & BRAVO!

I think that business at the bottom (is is still a bustle when it sits that low?) is too way fussy, which gives the dress an over-designed feel. The rest of it is great though and her expression is so classic that I’m happy to let that go and just give this one to her.

    • Dru

Yes, fussy is a Zac Posen trademark, this is still pretty low-key for him.

I’m still giving this a thumbs-up, though, it’s great to see an older actress in something non-frumpy and actually a bit cool.

Love the dress/jacket combo but I do wish the jacket was either black or white. Although then it would look less deliberate. I don’t know, I don’t know. What I do know is that she looks amazing, she clearly thinks she looks amazing, that bodice is KILLER on her figure, and I love pretty much everything about this look. Except maybe the jacket colour. I don’t know.

She looks great. (But I am getting a Mother of the Bride vibe. But that would be a fab MOTB.)

Way too much fabric tripping her up at the feet.

Gee, let me think. Clever without being too on-the-nose? Check. Unusual but not wackadoo? Check. Beautifully-designed? Check. Fantastic color? Check. Great styling? Check. Worn with confidence? Double-check.

What do we even need to vote about?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. It’s an “of course it’s well played”. One of the best dressed and sexiest of the evening.

Well, the poll currently stands at 86% weighing in in favour of “Fab!”, so I think we mostly agree on that :)

I just wish the jacket were another color. Instead of looking structured and cool, the matchiness of it all looks really mother of the bride.

I concede that I don’t like the back bustle part. But otherwise it is fab and let’s be clear that this woman turns 65 next month!!!

I get what you mean about the mother of the bride, Claire, but if it were another colour, it would be too informal — “oh, I just grabbed this jacket out of my closet.”

A matching shrug/bolero would be better. Maybe in shiny satin? Anyway, she looks the best I have EVER seen her.

I just wish it looked like she could walk in it. And the jacket is so that she has pockets to keep her Meryl doll and pins in.

I’m totally in love with that color! The eruption below the knee is a little odd, but other than that it’s a totally win and she looks amazing.

as a fellow W&Mite, i fully support her wearing the green part of the green and gold. Get it, gurl, you look great and comfortable and fierce. And damnit, Academy, award her an Oscar already.

Give her an oscar already!!! I think she carries it off so well because she is tall and seems to be veyr fit.

When I first saw her in this dress I was astonished at the amazing body she’s been hiding underneath her other, hideous outfits. Would have prefered a different style of jacket though.

Did anyone else see the “Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me” (of NPR) liveblog of the Oscars? They called this “The bottom says PROM! The top says I JUST WON THE MASTERS!”

I guess it’s just me, but I thought she looked like she was in the middle of a hair and wardrobe check for “The Camilla Parker Bowles Story”.

And now I want all kinds of clothing in that deep blue spruce colour. Glenn looks great.

CeCe – my thoughts exactly, that it’s a less avant garde version of Tilda’s ice blue masterpiece (and maybe I bit fussier in the details) but, still – WOW. I have never seen Glenn look more relaxed, sexy and feminine all at the same time, while still being herself. (And it makes a kick-ass contrast to her Albert Nobbs role.) Why aren’t casting directors falling down at this woman’s feet?

I want to like it, but I can’t quite. I don’t like all the stitching on the bodice, I don’t like the bustle, and I never, EVER like shoulder pads. It is a nice color, though, and she herself looks good.

I LOVE this color. To an irrational degree.
