Oscars Fug Carpet: Melissa McCarthy

This hurts me so much.

I just want so much MORE for her than this. It looks like she styled her hair by poking her head out the limo sunroof, and the dress is a wretched mess with a peekaboo Hefty bag. Why? WHY GOD WHY? Her stylist, at MINIMUM, should have go sit in the corner and watch a 24-hour loop of the sink scene in Bridesmaids, intercut with that ad where the woman climbs a rock while somebody screeches, “SOMEBODY LEFT THE GATE OOOOOPEN.” It’s that bad.

This is so bad it hurts. Is it made from sweat pant material?? What’s going on at the arms and the shoulder?? What’s with the black? She’s so lovely but she’s so resoundingly 0 for every awards show.

    • Mongerel
      +3

It reminds me of that super soft T-shirt material they make sheets with – especially with that sad little train trailing along behind. I used to have a set in heather gray that looked just like this. Complete with snaggle made with cat claws :) .

Right? This disgrace looks like it’s made of fleece. At the Oscars. I just can’t even. Even if it were just a better color, that would improve it by 50%. She is a lovely girl and there is no excuse for wearing a sweatshirt to the Academy Awards.

        • Edith
          +9

This is a sweatshirt muumuu with a trashbag underlay. She could do so much better with some structure… but if you’re going to go muumuu, go full Rhoda – bright colors, flowy, and a killer undo.

But don’t go muumuu to the Oscars, even then.

I have to agree. This “look” does her no favors at all. She’s got lovely hair – so of course, the styling had to be a train wreck. Don’t even get me started on that “garment.” I refuse to call it a dress. You cannot tell me that this was the most flattering thing they could find because I refuse to believe it.

  3. Emily
    +1

Yeah, this is just unfortunate. I don’t get it. She’s a pretty person and there are flattering things out there she could wear. Something REMOTELY fitted would have been better than this… sack. Sad.

I keep thinking about how great she looked at the SAGs last year and wishing she had gotten closer to that: http://gofugyourself.com/sag-awards-well-played-melissa-mccarthy-01-2012/18th-annual-screen-actors-guild-awards-red-carpet-7

Ooo, yeah, that look was pure knock-out.

    • Nancy
      +1

And you can tell from her expressions that she liked that dress a whole lot more than this one. I agree – this makes me sad, too, how hard it a for an oversized woman to find something flattering in the Land of Plenty. Does anyone design for larger women??? Seems like there is $$ to be made in that market for a smart designer.

        +7

Tadashi Shoji could work miracles for her. He dresses Octavia Spencer and always manages to make dresses that fit her beautifully and show her curves off to perfection. I’m so sad for Melissa cause she deserves better.

        • Rachael
          +2

Agreed that Tadashi Shoji is a designer that McCarthy should look into, but there are others, too. This dress is just sad. There is no reason for this travesty.

      • Esme
        +5

Seriously, I think she could have gone to Lane Bryant and got something right off the rack that looks better than this!

    • Anne B
      +10

The difference between last year’s dress and this gray sack is a designer.

Someone made this for her, and that person doesn’t like her body. It’s obvious, cruel, and a breathtakingly bad case of lost opportunity. We look up to Melissa McCarthy; we love her. This is not how you treat one of our favorites, which is what she is.

Of course she deserves better. But on a night when we got reminded (in the first few minutes!) that women are pretty much just boob-havers in this industry, we all do.

I think we just have to stop looking to the Oscars for magic.

      • Katharine
        +4

Yes; when she first walked out in this (I missed the red carpet), I thought she was doing it deliberately, and was going to do a skit about how she was dressed up as a Fat Girl at the Oscars. Honestly, she looked like a caricature. It was tragic.

      • Annie E
        +3

Seriously. Who in God’s name would look at Melissa McCarthy and think, “I think I’ll make it tight at the hips and baggy at the waist”!?!

Yeah and her hair looks awesome in that one too!

I don’t know, the draping and draping and gathering and gathering of the volumes of Jersey fabric on both dresses is overwhelming.

  5. Helen
    +7

Well, her face looks great, and she appears genuinely happy here, so… there’s that?

No wait, I’ve got one other thing, it does at least look comfortable.

one dress is not enough for a big woman so she wore two – a black one beneath the grey

  7. burntcopper
    +29

I saw the pic. I screamed ‘She has a waist!’ That is a sack. A BADLY-PINNED SACK.

FIRE YOUR STYLIST. FIRE THEM NOW. Then go do shots with Adele and Olivia and steal theirs.

    • Edith
      +20

Exactly. She needs to talk to Octavia Spencer’s stylist, then offer her DOUBLE her usual rate. Haute Couture is not made for large women – but the right stylist will GET THEM TO MAKE YOU AN ELEGANT DRESS. I know it wasn’t GFY’s favorite, but Octavia’s dress last night showed off her waist, camouflaged her upper arms, and showed off her incredible beauty.

The thing that hurts MOST about this may be the hair – because that hair says, “I’m a big girl, so I can’t be pretty or elegant, so I’ll go with WACKY and then people will like me anyway.” She could look GORGEOUS and elegant and lovely, but it looks like she gave up, which makes me so sad.

      • Jane
        +7

Agreed ^. This makes me sad, because Melissa seems like a lovely person. Does she not watch Stacy and Clinton? Then she’d know that a shapeless rectangular bag only makes you look FATTER! Gotta hug those curves, honey – look in the dictionary under “Spencer, Octavia” to see what I mean.

      • BostonLawyaGal
        +6

I agree that Octavia killed it. She always looks like a curvy goddess and rocks what she’s wearing. Melissa really needs a lesson.

    • Jacquilynne
      +8

This is so the problem. And the weird thing is, that dress is clearly draped to create a waist. Except that the draping is below her waist. So instead of creating a waist, it hides her waist and emphasizes the widest part of her.

This wouldn’t be magically exciting even if it was properly fit to her body, but it would at least be okay.

    • BrownEyedBetty
      +8

yup. what you said, chasmosaur. plus I gotta say, the color here. really? just plain ol’ flat gray. with “peekaboo hefty bag” ?? so depressing for big girls everywhere.

The sad thing is, gray doesn’t have to be bad on a brunette, either. It can be really flattering. This looks like pajamas.

I see this material every morning at LA Fitness so this made me cringe. I also think that the person responsible for the entire can of Aqua Net in her hair needs a Julia Sugarbaker setdown right now! This is simply unacceptable.

  11. Sue
    +20

Psst. Melissa. You are funny, BUT YOU ARE ALSO PRETTY. Do people not tell you this enough? Because you are. You can rock a good dress! I’ve seen it! You deserve a tailor who celebrates you.

Your punishment for the stylist is perfect.

  14. Siouxi
    0

So wrong. She’s very pretty and this dress was the opposite of what she should be doing. The color is awful – and I love a good gunmetal grey – the cut is worse and her hair needs to go back to the 80′s. I’m a fan of her but she needs to fire her stylist. Right. Now.

  15. Nancy
    +4

Yes, this isn’t great. BUT, I really sort of like that she went with something that looked comfortable on her shape, that didn’t require corseting or 3 layers of Spanx, etc. That she tried to just say, “Yup, this is what I look like” impresses me.

    • lilacsigil
      +8

I’m about Melissa’s size and wear dresses that are comfortable on my shape and don’t require corseting or Spanx, but this dress is just awful. She could have worn most of the Igigi line, for example, and even wearing the entire line at once would have looked better than this.

    • Rachael
      +4

But it ISN’T “what she looks like,” Nancy. This doesn’t celebrate her shape, it makes her look significantly larger than she really is. Something that actually fit her and was tailored to her body — that would be showing what she looks like. Just because she’s larger than most women there doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve to look beautiful. This is not beautiful. It’s a grey sheet, awkwardly and lazily pinned around her, with a trash bag sticking out from underneath. She looked stunning at the SAGS last year in a dress that would not have required 2 corsets and 3 layers of spanx, and celebrated the body she has.

  16. Olivia
    +2

This just makes me so sad. When I saw it last night, I seriously almost cried, because I want more for her. She is so pretty, funny, so talented, and she is doing no favors to herself in cheap looking over sized sacks. Like I said before, on Octavia’s pic, she needs to call up her stylist and hire her on the spot. She needs dresses that give her shape (like, let’s find her waist, because I know it’s there!) and expose a little skin. There has got to be some lovely decolletage at the minimum hiding under that horrible mess.

I’ve been waiting all day for this post! Sad, indeed. Wasn’t she the one who made Heather and Jessica gasp last year when she said she had designed her own dress? Maybe she doesn’t have a stylist…

  18. KB

Yeah, this was a pretty much a trainwreck. But I do think it looked better when she was actually onstage versus in this candid shot.

(Plus, I think she’s so genuinely funny and pretty, that I refuse to ever think she looks super-duper-awful-horrible. It’s just the bias by which I operate.)

Jesus – make that semi-candid shot. It really is kind of posed, isn’t it? Not good …

Oh, she looks terrible. It’s so sad. I cannot believe she left the house like that. That hair! That is wind-tunnel hair that was shellacked in place. And that sad, shapeless sack of a dress … no, honey. She needs better people – stylists, hairdressers, friends who will have come-to-Jesus talks with her about the proper use of hairspray and the importance of proportions. By far the worst look of the night, in my opinion.

Her skin looks wonderful. Too bad about the dress. Octavia Spencer’s dress was beautiful, and maybe something like that would have worked better on Melissa.

  24. Cat

This is terrible. All of it. The dress, the hair– so so bad. It’s an ugly sack. She either needs a stylist or to fire the one she currently has. So you don’t have a model body– you can still wear flattering dresses! Please, talk to any one of the gorgeous women listed above and find something that fits you!

I got two of them for $19.95 + $7.95 shipping and handling.

    • Chris P

      Snarky bon mots aside:

      1) I saw the live blog. I didn’t have the red carpet on so I was all like, “I HAVE TO SEE HER HAIR.” It was…everything I was dreading.

      2) The dress, at first, I didn’t hate that much. But that was a quick glance. On further examination (that is, looking at it for more than two seconds): Oh JESUS CHRIST NO.

      3) Honestly, I don’t know if she could or WOULD want to do something like Octavia Spencer or Gabourey Sidibe or Amber Riley. I get the sense she’s insecure about her arms – mostly because she ALWAYS wears long-sleeved gowns.

3a) To which I say: Forget the haters. (Yes, I know, easier said than done, but seriously…like, look, no matter what anyone wears, some witty blogger on the Internet is going to eviscerate it. Hell, people were going after Quvenzhané Wallis. So you might as well take some risks.)

      4) SHE IS MELISSA F’IN MCCARTHY. I KNOW IT’S HOLLYWOOD (WHERE ANYONE OVER SIZE TWO IS AN ELEPHANT WHO WILL NEVER BE LOVED), BUT YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT NO ONE IN THAT TOWN WOULD EVEN DARE TO DRESS MELISSA F’IN MCCARTHY?

It’s not so much that she deserves better (which she does), it’s that…this was the only dress she could find? Is this the BEST designers could do? What the hell is the excuse for this? YOU DO NOT LET MELISSA F’IN MCCARTHY GO TO THE OSCARS LOOKING LIKE COPROLITE. THAT IS A FAILURE OF EVERY STYLIST (ESPECIALLY HERS).

      5) I am referring to her as MELISSA F’IN MCCARTHY from now on.

  26. SPJava

Please, Please, Please some one tell Melissa to have a consult with Octavia Spencer’s designers and the folks who dress Adele. I know that Melissa is larger than those women but at least those designers have a clue or two about how to beautifully dress a women that possesses a full figure. It can NOT get any worse than this. Simply put Adele and Octavia always look divine where as here Melissa looks like she went as Divine. >.<
Melissa you are going to be going to these award shows: Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG and Oscars for years to come as a presenter, a nominee and a winner, it is not to late to turn it around.

I could do better for her with 10 minutes at Nordstroms or Igigi. A rich deep purple, maybe, some decolletage showing. frankly, if she’d worn a larger size in Emmanuelle Riva’s dress she’d have looked a thousand times better and Emmanuelle Riva is in her eighties.

Just to prove to myself that I was right, I put that photo in an image editor and moved the horizontal ruching up to just under her bust and erased it from over her hips. SO MUCH BETTER. A MILLION TIMES BETTER. AND I DID NOT MAKE HER SKINNIER IN MY EDITING. How could any designer with eyes not understand this?!?

  33. fritanga

At the Oscars, Octavia Spencer, Adele and Queen Latifah were all wearing dresses ranging from very nice to terrific, and as Tim Gunn says, none of them are a size 2. All were styled beautifully from head to toe as well.

There is no excuse for the curtains and sofa covers McCarthy insists upon wearing. A sensitive designer and/or terrific stylist could make her look great. Why doesn’t she seem to care about the way she looks? Makes me sad because I’ve loved her since Go.

  34. Romary

I’m going to blame the wearer of the Pat Solitano Collection dress. At some point beyond your 1st “time” you need to get a clue beyond what some paid help tells you. If you are only wearing this free dreck because free, spend some coin get something made for you by one of the no doubt hundreds of no name tailors/designers in SoCal and find a hair/makeup crew so haid in sync with body.

  35. KMG

WORD to pretty much everything everyone has said. Fire your stylist. Fire your stylist now. You can dress well, no matter your size – everyone has a different body type and you just have to figure out what works. She probably has someone on her payroll to do this very job (they are doing it so badly right now). The thing is, this dress just makes me sad b/c it’s like larger women can’t look well, on the biggest night of the year in the industry.

This makes me sad too. The color is depressing. It seems like they approached the design in a very defensive way. Dressing to down play your “flaws” is never as much fun as highlighting your best parts! Her face and skin are gorgeous. I think they could have made something that celebrates her a lot more. This looks like they didn’t even try.

    • ThaliaM
      0

Ooh, Tiffany, this sums it up perfectly! I think Melissa frequently looks like she’s “dressing to downplay her ‘flaws’.” Based on how covered-up (long sleeves, fairly high necklines) most of her red-carpet looks are, I feel like she is incredibly self-conscious in these situations. But seriously, with people of *any* size, dressing to highlight your assets is always the best way to go.

  44. Minda
    0

Agreed that she could have looked way better.

But I really want to commiserate with Heather about the commerical with the woman climbing a rock and the “somebody left the gate open” song. I HATED that commercial when it was airing originally last year and literally breathed a sigh of relief when it faded away. But I was in for the disappointment of the month when I heard that cat in heat caw-ing at me from my television speakers again recently!!! WHY IN THE WORLD would you subject people to that song/commercial AGAIN? Eww…

  45. una
    0

Yes I was very disappointing with this one! She is super cute and deserved to have a much cuter dress and hair. Just because she is a big girl doesnt mean she can look cute and sexy. Take Adele for instance. She rocked her looks at the Oscars. Melissa’s stylist needs to take notes from Adele’s stylist! No woman should have to wear a sack like this!

  46. Sue
    0

That gray is a horrible colour on her. Her light, warm complexion needs a warmer colour. I am a plus size woman. I don’t have the resources or a stylist that I assume Melissa has access to. And I always look fab! Why, why, why- she is actually very pretty and could look so much better. She needs Octavia Spencer’s stylist.

During the Oscars there was an ad for a movie with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock. She was doing that finger thing with her hair and finally that dreadful hairstyle she wore to the awards made sense.

Maybe she and Christina Hendricks can go to fashion camp together and learn how to look as awesome as they deserve. The dress is as awful as everyone says and the hair also; I’m also terribly disappointed with her makeup. She looks terribly washed out and not at all her vibrant self.
