Oscars Fug Carpet: Kristen Stewart

Apparently, Kristen Stewart suffered an “unspecified injury” requiring her to be on crutches last night. My totally made-up theory is that she went to the Razzies — which Twilight basically swept — and really whooped it up (the wisest people realize that you have to embrace your Razzies) and then accidentally tripped on a pile of shoes in her bedroom when she got home. Not that I have ever almost broken any limbs tripping over a pile of shoes myself or anything like that.

Dress is prettier than usual for her, but as you mentioned, it does not fit her properly. Not to be catty, but she was so high-school nervous during her presentation, I was uncomfortable watching her. Looks like she did not rehearse AT ALL.

Apparently she stepped on broken glass and cut her foot? But that doesn’t explain the bruises on her arms. (Or why she apparently hasn’t washed her hair all month.) I am really wondering what happened to that girl.

      +1

As for the foot, apparently she stepped on a glass two days ago with the ball of her foot.

I just noticed the bruises now that you mentioned them. I hope nothing happened to her, but I have always popped up with bruises with ridiculously light contact. Some people are like that. She could have fallen into something when she stepped on the glass and done that.

I get bruises if you so much as look at me the wrong way. But I’d put makeup on them if I were attending the Academy Awards!

          +3

I bruise easily too, and I share Stewart’s complexion (and, unfortunately, her bluish-tinged undereye bags as well…KStew and I should really lead a summit on this problematic issue)

However, I don’t understand how an injured foot would cause someone to stand onstage in that contorted manner where she had one arm wrapped behind behind her, clutching the opposite elbow, while she was presenting. It was painfully awkward to watch.

It’s weird – I saw this, and thought it was tremendously unflattering to her cute figure (and her hair and makeup looked sloppy). But many sites are gushing over how perfect this is.

Are you two the only ones paying attention?

HER HAIR! the first time i saw it on TV i thought that that was the worst awards hair i had ever seen. It’s like she forgot to shower, then said “Oh crap! I have to go to the Oscars!” then ran her fingers through her hair, got in the limo and forgot to look in a mirror.

Ugh her hair. Slide 4 is legitimately what my hair looks like when I get out of bed in the morning after a rough night’s sleep. I really hope she isn’t actually paying anyone to do it like that, and really hope she will one day pay someone to do it better.

I get it, but I DO have to say…it does strike me as kind of hilarious when a bunch of 30-somethings who lived through the grungy 90s give her a hard time for her style. She’s like the teeniest tiniest bit of cute grunge compared with what was going on then. Do you not remember Aniston’s DREADS?! She’s young, it’s her nonconformist thing…let’s just give it to her. I think it’s actually more about her extreme awkwardness/surliness at all times. Which I also do NOT enjoy.

        • Chasmosaur
          +4

Jenny – as a 40-something who lived through grunge in college and shortly thereafter? I had short, well-cut, well-styled hair (even though at the time, my hair was thicker than KStew’s and I could carry off a mane). If I was having a bad hair day, I had a collection of old hats with big funky pins on the bands. I would never have gone out with my hair looking like that.

It was our *clothes* that were ratty, not our grooming. And sometimes it wasn’t about the ratty – it was about the layers and tights and ankle boots. The only clothes I wore that were ratty were my geology field clothes – my cute clothes were cute (for the day ;) )

We still had good makeup and hair. Occasionally hats. The guys had ratty hair on top of their clothes – they had the dreads – and not all of them did even go ratty. A lot of them just had shaggy or long hair – Eddie Vedder probably had more product in his hair than I did. (But that was okay – it was Eddie Vedder ;) ) No 22 year old girl would go out with her hair and makeup like that to a party, let alone an 8 am class.

And Aniston’s dreads occurred in 1999 – grunge was on the decline then (and I seem to remember most people thought they were horrible). Her infamous shag haircut – that was during the grunge era. Go rent “Singles” and look at the hair and makeup.

When I saw the first shot of her I said “She couldn’t even brush her hair for the gd OSCARS?” She has the personality of a hairbrush, too. I’m ready for her to fade into oblivion now.

When the fit of your dress is so bad it causes pregnancy rumors….there’s a problem! She was shot from some very bad angles last night poor thing. Then there’s that “I’m soooo bored I could die” face…which was the center square of my bingo card last night.

    • Art Eclectic
      +12

Agreed. Every time the camera caught her unawares she looked like a bored teenager stuck at bingo night with Grandma. I haven’t seen any of her movies so I can’t comment on her acting talents, but the girl has a long way to go if she is ever to be considered a “star.”

    • Heather
      +4

@Jenny: Just because we lived through the grungy 90s doesn’t mean we signed onto the grunge ourselves. I think we’re entitled to think she looks less than great no matter how old we are or what era we lived through, you know? Kristen has done the Eau d’Rebel much better, if that’s what she was doing here. If it wasn’t, and she was just… off… then it’s too bad, because she’s much cuter than she made herself here, and I think she’s actually much brighter than she came off, too.

That’s what Adele’s hair looks like after she’s had a nap.

She needed the “long torso” version of the dress…it was even worse on stage, the way the sides looked…terrible.

And I said to my husband that she looked stoned. The bruises on her added to the post- frat party look. At school, we called them UPIs…unidentified party injuries. You know, you wake in the morning with a bruise, scrape, cut, etc…whoops, how did that happen? That’s what happened to her ankle too, I’ll bet.

Really with the hair? It looks greasy, the color is odd and I can’t believe none of her handlers advised her to run a brush through it quickly considering she was presenting an award.

The dress looks awful. And I’ll bet there is some unwritten rule of thumb that one shouldn’t wear a strapless dress when using crutches. A disaster waiting to happen.

    • Chasmosaur
      +4

I’m thinking the short time frame meant she was committed to the dress.

What I don’t understand is why she just didn’t get a fabulous cane. I spent nine months last year working down the progression of two crutches –> one crutch –> cane. If she had simply cut the ball of her foot on glass (I’ve done it, it can hurt amazingly), she could have bundled up her foot and used a cane. Would have been much easier.

I generally like her, but no. Her hair looks a million times better in these photos than it did onstage. It looked really greasy and in need of a comb on stage.

And as a Harry Potter fangirl, I certainly appreciated that they chose the HP score to play them onstage, rather than anything Twilight. One of these things is better than the other….

I haven’t seen the TV, but I think she looks cute and working those crutches. I hope she could go with a converse on her sane feet, but I’m afraid someone advised to go with heels. She’ll never be the standard star, I like her for being scruffy and grungish!! As for being stoned during the gala, If I had to listen to Les Mis songs, and spend four hours there, that’s a good way to resist. The Oscars are booooring.

I loved the dress, loved her necklace, loved Kristen’s makeup and hair. The dress sure looks like it fits to me. I thought she looked beautiful.

Actually, I thought everyone looked beautiful. It wasn’t a real colorful array of dresses but i liked them all.

  15. Heather
    +3

Aww…I thought she looked pretty! It’s like a swan dress or something – cracked eggshells with a tulle ‘swan’ emerging. Ok not the best description but that’s what it evoked for me…

  16. Siouxi

Awkward ankle injury aside, that dress is hideous, it’s partly see thru and does something weird to her boobs. There was no other choice? Something with straps? Crutches and strapless are a bad combination.

And the hair. And the makeup. Clean that up *before* photographers.

The only place I’m going to cut her some slack is her behavior. Seems she forgot she’s supposed to be an ACTRESS and could have acted the part of graceful presenter.

I fail to understand how, after being in Hollywood for years and years, she is still affecting this nervous, shy act whenever she is called upon to be an adult and say, give an interview or present an award. Why is she incapable of expressing herself like a normal, functioning adult? Is she stoned ALL of the time?

    • Elizabeth
      +6

Kim, I totally agree! I was getting irritated watching her on the red carpet and anytime they showed her during the telecast. She just seems so PETULANT most of the time.

      • Kate
        0

Great word – that’s how she often looks. Sure, sometimes she looks like she’s so nervous and uncomfortable she might vomit, but last night she looked “petulant.” When they were taking pictures of her, you could see on the ABC coverage she was non stop tapping her foot and jiggling her leg – I DON’T think it was anything to do with her injury either. She just looked tired, cranky, and/or nursing a hangover of some variety.

How hard is it to get a decent night’s sleep the night before you have to present at the Oscars? Just say you won’t present if you can’t be at least somewhat prepared (or bothered to give a crap.)

Oh, and for the record, I’m not actually a K.Stew hater by any means. I give her a pass when she truly seems uncomfortable and nervous. NOT when she shows up looking like she partied til 6am (and yes, I do know how that looks and feels, just like these pictures, haha.)

    • Annie E
      +7

I don’t think it’s an affectation – why would someone adopt that affectation? – and getting up on stage in front of thousands of people is different from acting on a film. What I don’t understand is why she would agree to present an award in the first place if the event was going to terrify her.

  18. Kim

Not to mention the fact that she always looks dirty and smelly. You’re presenting at the Oscars, ya know? Wash your freaking hair. Geez.

That or some sort of hangover – she looked almost a little bit more like she was coming down from something into hangover land. Sucky place to be at any time, even more so if you’re stuck in an auditorium in a tight dress, haha.

  20. Kementari
    0

If she could just get extensions that actually match the color of her natural hair (a la the color of her hairline around her face), then her hair wouldn’t look so weird and unkempt. And she needs to stop messing with it, because there are pictures of her earlier on the red carpet where it is smooth and pretty. By the time she presented, it was a nest again.

Lastly, she looks better in some color. Her makeup was good, it usually is, but the paste color of this dress is draining and doesn’t flatter her complexion.

I have never seen her in anything, so I was surprised when she came up to present and her hair looked uncombed and her speaking voice lacked emotion or volume. Presumably she actually has some personality on-screen? Didn’t know about the injury…maybe she was sonted on painkillers.

        >>Presumably she actually has some personality on-screen?<<

No. If there's such a thing as negative charisma, Stewart's got it. And her eyes are usually closed while delivering dialogue. How she got the Twilight jobs is a complete mystery.

What you saw at the Academy Awards was actually less awkward than she is in her films.

  31. MelissaW

Given that it was probably couture, you’d think the designer would have zipped over to KStew’s hotel to have a seamstress add a halter strap or something to help with the crutches. I don’t loathe this dress, I think it’s appropriately funky for her “style”, but the fit plus the ugly hair and the bad attitude during the telecast just said “high school stoner”. That dress needed a fabulous updo and some killer sneakers to accomodate her poor foot.

But I also spied a SMILE on the red carpet, something we didn’t really see on TV.

  32. Jeanie

I’m sorry, I can’t. Her hair is so dirty and greasy. It looks like it smells so bad. It completely negates whatever she is wearing.

I noticed on TV that the bodice of the dress was half an inch away from her body. You could see that there were molded boobs busily into the dress and her own chest was much flatter. At times her dress was off center making her brests look off center. Her hair looked like she had been laying on a couch seconds before she went out to present.
She didn’t look shy to me, more annoyed. She seemed like a to cool for school teenager, who was forced to participate in some dorky event by her mom. It’s fine if she doesn’t like these things, but then.she should just stay home.

  34. marym

Maybe it’s just me, but I have never been happier to see KStew’s bitchface than during that terrible, terrible awards show. The reaction shot to Jean Dujardin killed me (but then again I loathe Dujardin). I do wish her dress had sleeves, though.

  37. tracy
    +8

You guys are nicer than me. I saw she was still wearing heels, which just makes me think her injury was much ado about not much at all. I basically figure if you’re a non-nominee and you’re on crutches, just stay home. It’s obvious that’s where she’d have rather been anyway. Instead she made a huge production, made sure she was all over the headlines today for no reason, looked grouchy and greasy all night, and in general looked like she didn’t even care enough to get her dress fitted or wash her hair.

  38. TonyG
    0

I can’t see the “bad fit” in this dress, at least not in these pictures, but I can’t remember how it looked on stage. It seems the right size for her, especially in the back. The tailoring in the midsection is off a tad, but it’s not outrageous. I think the fabric that’s part of the detail is much thicker than the underlying fabric that is shaping the dress to her skin, so there could be an awkwardness to how the dress looks when she moves. Maybe? I don’t know. But I don’t think it’s a horrible fit in these pics.

  39. Stefanie

When she was presenting my husband turns to me and says “She looks strung out. Like she’s stoned and hasnt had a shower in a while.” Out of the mouths of men.

  41. pinkcheese
    +4

If I’m being kind, I’ll presume that her looking completely wasted is a result of the painkillers she was prescribed for the foot injury (which must have been oh, so very horrible given that she’s stll wearing heels.) If that’s the case, though, shouldn’t your hair/makeup person take care to NOT make you look even more cracked out on top of that?

And I hope she got a tetanus shot, since she’s apparently suffering from lock-jaw (unless that’s how she normally speaks.)

She’s an enigma to me; I thought her acting was fabulous when she was younger (playing Jodie Foster’s daughter in “Panic Room” and a small role in “Into the Wild”). She really stood out for me. I think the scenario went something like this. Injured herself during self-medicating/partying after Razzie win. Partied night before ceremony. Late night. Rolled out of bed late, still wasted. Possibly showered. Bundled off to stylists. No time for last, best dress fitting. Makeup number one issue. Whatever time was left the hair stylist got. Was probably very upset about having to let her go out like that. Between then and going on stage, more medication or drinks or whatever. She appeared out of it, distracted, lacked the focus to be in the moment on stage. Should have stayed home.

I read that apparently some brilliant person on team thought it was a good idea to put her in one heel and one flat, which I think probably accounts for a lot of the limping. Why they didn’t just put both her feet in flats is beyond me. Maybe she just wanted a way to draw attention to herself.

Not trying to be a KStew defender, because I really don’t care one way or another – but if she’d cancelled and stayed home, everyone would be saying what an ungrateful brat she was for canceling due to a “cut foot” *wink nudge* as though she was faking the injury to get out it.

The dress is horrifying – the hair looks good in some shots and GOD AWFUL in others. Her attitude and demeanor just seems so off-putting. If it’s genuinely nerves and discomfort- then for goodness sake, DECLINE these types of invitations – you don’t have to be a show-pony to be an actress! If it’s resentment over being (somehow) manipulated into coming – you’re doing yourself no favors by showing up and appearing to pout your way through it – put on your actress pants and FAKE IT!

I really don’t think they would’ve. She wasn’t nominated. Going to the Oscars as a non-nominee isn’t seen as some kind of admirable act of charity. It’s self-promotion and can even look kind of sad for certain people. Had she pulled out, people would’ve just said her injury must be bad for her to pass up all that press attention. Instead, she seemed to want to draw as much attention to herself as possible on a night that wasn’t about her.

      • Heather
        +4

I will stick up for her on this point and say she was just trying to fulfill her obligation — I’m sure her team told her to, but I also think she probably knew it was bananas to pull out of presenting at the Oscars. So I don’t think her showing up had anything to do with trying to get attention, so much as… she was supposed to be there, so she was there. I was kind of impressed she didn’t milk the crutches more, actually. She didn’t even use them on-stage.

WHY was she invited again, exactly? It’s not like any of the Twilight movies have been an Oscar contender, and we all know KStew isn’t Oscar material either. And everybody knows by now that she’s no good in front of a live audience. With that said, this dress is blah, and her hair is horrible.

  63. moolahloolah
    +2

    my thoughts about KStew.

She is not beautiful. She got picked for that vampire franchise because teenage girls and loser-type adult females need a non-descript, blank canvas on which to project their romantic fantasies. She is a symbol of hope that it is ok to be an average brunette but all the guys will like you anyway. She has no right to be in that silly movie Snow White and the Huntsman because Charlize Theron beats her hands down anytime, even though Charlize is more than ten years older than her.

She has no charisma. I have never seen a picture of her that makes me feel that she has an attractive persona. She talks like an awkward teenager – not particular smart but got lucky and not particularly appreciative of her good fortune. She alienates people who hear her talk in interviews.

back to topic. the dress is not that bad. it is not cheap looking like some of you put it. the fluffy parts don’t bother me that much although i agree they look like irrelevant and off-tangential. the problem is that it looks a bit low slung on her.

the hair is also not as bad as some of you put it. i like that volume and the waves.

the make-up is not as haphazard as some of you describe. it is a dark look with the smoky eyes and all – boring as usual and predictable for her. the problem is with her undereye bags. she is in the same age group as taylor swift and rihanna. but she is already showing signs of haggardness way ahead of her years. doesn’t she take care of herself, i wonder?

overall, she looks average for an Oscar event. definitely not a “wow”, but not as disastrous as some of you made it out to be.

i think a lot of the negative comments here are inspired by a dislike for her personality. i share this sentiment too.

I think she’s quite lovely. I just think she is so uncomfortable with her level of fame that it gets in her way all the time. It’s like she pathologically HAS to undercut the glam facade just so she can feel like she’s being real — which is a totally 22-year old (or whatever) thing to do. The key is, you need to figure out a way to do it that doesn’t also look unwashed and surly. Sometimes Kristen nails it; this time, not so much.

Yikes, that might be just a smidge harsh for this particular site = )

Uh, I am in my late 20s and, as stated above, I have undereye baggage problems as well. KStew and I have the same complexion, with the pale skin with bluish undertones and dark auburn hair. Although I can certainly conduct myself in public with what I hope adds up to more poise and grace than this particular starlet, I have to take issue with the eyebags comment. I teach yoga, practice 5-7 times a week, drink copious amounts of water, eat healthfully and strive to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. There is really no amount of “taking care of oneself” that one can do to counteract genetics. My family on the Romanian side all have the bluish tint around their eyes and it’s simply something I have come to accept.

That said, her demeanor last night was heinous.

hi Cakes, seems like you are doing a lot of things right. perhaps KStew has similar genes as well. to confess, i too suffer from severe eyebags problem all my life too. true – it is genetic and little to do with lifestyle sometimes.

it is just that KStew is an actress and it is part of the profession to look superhuman good. to defy ageing in the way that mere mortals can’t. case in point – demi moore, jennifer aniston. it is part of a Hollywood’s actress job description to exceed normal standards because they belong to another realm.

it is somewhat unacceptable if they fall short and reveal their human shortfall. on the 4th photo with the facial close-up i can actually see other early signs of ageing such as an emerging nasolabial and marionette lines. she really does look tired instead of fresh here, even though she is barely 23.

Can’t she enjoy herself for once? Maybe she doesn’t like being a star.

I told her to lay off the Nyquil two hours before the performance. But seriously though….she looked, and sounded, like hell.

Watching her onstage, I just felt bad for her. She just seemed so uncomfortable, awkward, and high. I saw it more of a “this girl doesn’t seem to be in a good place” kind of thing instead of “petulant teenager”. I hope she grows out of it, whatever it is – I can’t really figure it out. Daniel Radcliffe did SUCH a good job pretending her weirdness wasn’t going on. Charmed me to him even more.

As for her whole presentation here, none of it’s working. Kristen Stewart’s tiny, yet here she looks really wide, and during the show something about the whole thing made me fear a wardrobe malfunction. Whoever mentioned Mexican Sweetbread – I can’t unsee it.

She reminded me of someone – then it hit me and I googled these pics for a side by side comparison!

She looks Les Miserable to me always. She just seems annoyed to be an actress. The dress didn’t fit and the hair terrible. Give it a rest KS you obviously don’t want to be there.

So I’m a known Kristen Stewart apologist, but as for looking stoned, perhaps she was on pain meds? And as for the bruises on her arms, perhaps they’re from people holding onto her to help her walk or to get in and out of cars? Just sayin’.

I agree the dress isn’t good, though. I don’t hate it, but it annoys me when beautiful people choose unflattering dresses. I’m sure she had better options than that.

She’s gorgeous. Doubt seriously that she was stoned – but if so, it’s understandable. A cool kid like K-Stew would need something to enable her to sit through a craptastic spectacular like the Oscars.
