Oscars Fug Carpet: Elizabeth Banks

I want to like this. I really do!

But it looks like someone was in the middle of plucking her, but got distracted and wandered off.  I guess when faced with the choice to go to the event half-plucked, or to go pluck herself, she chose the less labor-intensive option. Can’t say I blame her.

I also want to like this. However. The feathers start right at her crotchal area: not a good look. The dress also looks slightly sheer, though that could be the lighting. The idea was good but the execution failed.

Agreed. Awesome in theory (and/or with some tweaks), non-awesome in practice.

Yes the “plucking needed to go just a teeny bit further down, because all I can think now is – CENSORED!-

This is both insane AND awesome. She looks like she’s some sort of mutant superhero caught midway while transitioning from green-skinned lizard-lady to blue furry muppet. And I mean that in a good way!

I think I like it, oddly enough.

Me too. I know I shouldn’t. But I do. I guess it helps that she is stunning.

I just can’t get on board with this dress at all. She looks like she has another dress on underneath, then was wrapped in green cellophane to preserve freshness.

Her hair and makeup look great, though. It’s too bad she wore that dress.

Maybe this is just the latest style in The Capitol.

Can I get a Hunger Games high five?

It’s rather Seuss-ian. It miiiiight have worked with less bold colors (and normally I love a bold color!)… there’s just too much going on here.

This is the only one I actually gasped at out of love. I think it’s tremendous.

I totally agree. I LOVE THIS.

I’m a sucker for long sleeves. And polka dots. Seriously LOVE this.

Uh… I dunno, I’m getting lizard-like flashes from this. Like Lizard Lady emerging from the black swamp or something….

I’m going to have to give this a fug. Anything reptilian is fug.

We’re on the same wave length. My first thought was: “Bride of Swamp Thing”

I love it. Love the colors and the fit and the hair and make up and most especially love the dress.

Dang you, Jessica. I liked the dress when I saw it on another site. Then I read your justification for fugging it, and I have surrended to your opinions.

i would have LOVED it without the feathers.

I don’t know, this reminds me of the Riddler. Also, is anyone else having trouble getting on the Banks train? I feel like she’s always over-acting.

I used to think that about her too, but then I saw her on “Zach & Miri Make A Porno” and fell in love with her! Don’t know how, it just happened!

Then this is a movie I must see.

I’m typically not an Elizabeth Banks fan but I must agree, that movie is awesome. It combines raunchiness, pornography, and comedy. And Seth Rogen. So basically, it’s got everything you need.

I hate to admit this, but I actually like this dress. I love the colors together but I think it might be prettier if it maybe didn’t have the polka dots?

This is one of my favorites of the night! I LOVE IT! It is so weird and whimsical, yet elegant with a classic silhouette! I love the eclectic color combination and mix of big polka dots and feathers! This dress makes me smile and she makes me laugh, so it’s a WIN/WIN situation! Her body is seriously awesome and she looks fresh & pretty! FAB!!!

Did Project Runway fall into an industrial-strength blender? ‘Cause this looks like chopped up bits of several different ideas. Love the colors, but that is all.

Maybe I’m on Red Carpet YAWN overload, but for some reason I really like this dress — or, at least I find it refreshingly interesting.

i can just hear the person yelling.. “GO PLUCK YOURSELF” and the usual bleep for pluck if it were a show

She has better do The Hunger Games press tour as Effie Trinket. I will cry if she doesn’t.

All I can think when I look at this is that it’s a poor-man’s knock-off of Evan Rachel Wood’s amazing Globes dress.

Their feathers are similar, but they’re completely different birds!

It *might* be too much. Feathers and dots and two bright colours…but I think what bothers me the most is that it’s too much coverage on the top half. It needs to be short sleeved or a v-neck or backless or something. Wouldn’t 3/4 length sleeves be better here? I like the green, but there’s just a little too much of it.

It is making me think of “The Ruins”, which is a great and freaky book, but probably not the effect she was looking for.

She does look very fertile, though. (kicks self and leaves before anyone else has the chance) :)

The green on this is so mossy I legitimately read her name as “Elizabeth Moss” before realizing it was EBanks and correcting myself. So yeah, mossy plus polka dots plus feathers….too much.

Love the idea, the execution’s just a little bit off for me. Mostly, I’d like the feathers to be a little for lush, esp. where they begin. As is, they look a little bit weedy, and so near the crotch, that’s not the greatest juxtaposition. That said, it’s not killing the dress and I think if’s overall more of a nifty success than fail. And who is this Elizabeth Banks? I feel like I should know, but can’t place her.

I love it, half-plucked and all! I mean, she looks fabulous.

The plucking is also a convenient reference to all the plucking Katniss must undergo during her makeover for the 74th Hunger Games.

I love, love, love this. The only thing I’d change is to make her lipstick just a tiny bit brighter.

The more I look at this, the closer I come to outright loving it (which is the opposite of what usually happens when I stare at something for too long).

  32. Alice

I wonder if this didn’t look better in person. I like the colors a lot, and the shape, cut and fit are right – but the splotches and crotch feathers do the whole thing in.

Two things polka dots should never remind one of: sores or pores. Also they shouldn’t look like surplus nipples, but she’s not having that problem here, unless… let me look again… no. I’m not getting a concealed Wicked Witch of the West vibe. If I saw this on January Jones, now that would explain a LOT.

Sigh. I have met Elizabeth and she is lterally the nicest, funniest gal, and she is oh so pretty in real life, but I loathe this dress. Admittedly I am not a fan of polka dots in general– hello Natalie Portman, I don’t care if it IS vintage Dior– but at least Natalie’s was pretty if kinda meh. This one, sadly, is aggressively ugly. It’s like something vaguely vegetal that’s been left in a fridge for too long and sprouted black mold. Yuck.

You need to commit to polka dots. You can’t decide at the end that you wish they were flowers that would work with vines.

  36. Deborah

If you cut off the feathered bottom of the dress, and the sleeves, this would make an awesome 60′s mini dress, although that may not have been quite the right vibe for this event.

  37. CJ

This would be great… if she were surrounded by Muppets.

It starts out great–good fit, vibrant color…ends with half-plucked.

I actually kind of like it? I think the feathering at the bottom should have been done better (why so straggly at the top?), but otherwise it’s really interesting composition.

I think that this is EXACTLY what Effie Trinket would wear, if she were going to a casual garden party in the Capital.

I would totally LOVE this if it wasn’t so sheer. Lord know I love a defined waist and some bold colour.

Ew. This looks like Kermit got the chickenpox, and then – what’s that little hook-nosed purple muppet? – grabbed him around the knees and wouldn’t let go. Yuck.

What is with the sheer/polka dots thing? I didn’t like it on Claire Danes and I don’t like it here. And the color is Incredible Hulk-like.

Maybe it would be better without polka dots? I think that’s what is giving the “just-plucked” look.
