Oscars Fug Carpet: Berenice Bejo

Oh, madame:

You are so much prettier than this. Is this punishment because we keep yapping about how much we love a redhead in green? It is, isn’t it? I’m so sorry. I never meant to do this to you.

Oh, man, I saw The Artist the other night and she’s so drop-dead freaking stunning it was pretty much all I could see on the screen. This dress is such a wasted opportunity; she does not look 1/10 as beautiful as she so obviously should.

I know, she’s like the Jessica Chastain of this particular night (i.e. stuck in a dress that does not do justice to her beauty), is this the price we pay for having Jessica look fabulous at last?

Either way, I love Bérénice, she lights up that screen, and at the very least I hope the reason she picked this fug is because she liked it. (it would make me tremendously sad if it turned out she ended up in this because no one would send her anything nice :( ).

I wanted so much more for this understated beauty! Despite the hair color and the drab dress, she’s still lovely and stands out among the self-aware beauties around her, but this outfit is forgettable.

This collection had SO MANY gorgeous options. Including the one Katy Perry wore to the Grammys. This was one of the least sexy ones. Although I love the color, I wish she picked one that had less sleeve or was a little more form fitting through the hip. I mean, she’s TINY

J’adore Bérénice! Here, let’s just say she’s lucky she’s so pretty and adorable and seems really nice.

My only problem with this is the color. If this dress had been more the color of Viola Davis’ dress, I would give it a Well Played.

I agree. I actually thought it was silvery/platinum until I watched Seacrest with her today. And I kind of loved it as silver. Although I think she needs to jack up the girls a little.

I also really don’t like the red hair….maybe it’s for a role? Otherwise, please go back to the dark brown. This lady is seriously gorgeous.

i hate this hair color on her… or anyone else! this shade of red always look like it is faded, therefore unkempt. it should be couple of shades darker to be a nice deep red or lighter to be strawberry blonde, although i prefer her in dark brown. and what the hell was wrong with her and violas eyebrows?! peoples eyebrows should be visible :(

dress is not one of my favorites but situation above the neck is worse. shame for a gorgeous woman

I feel the same about her hair…and on the red carpet I did not love this dress. I LIKED it b/c it is sparkly and pretty, but I did not LOVE it. However, at the end of the evening when she was on the stage it looked fantastic. It definitely lacked on the carpet, but under those lights it was brilliant.

It’s a pretty dress, but the detail gets lost on that minty green color! I don’t like her hair & makeup! But, I love her jewelry & her clutch and the fact that she’s Argentinian and grew up in Paris because I love Argentina & France and speak both Spanish & French! I want to have lattes & croissants with her at a patisserie… *sigh*

She’s just so beautiful I think she could of done better! It’s a bit droppy through the mid section & not that flattering to the boobs. The change of hair colour was also not needed (unless it’s for a movie) she’s a beautiful brunette!

The hair rendered her unrecognizable for a moment, and that sort of took away from the whole overall appearance thing for me.

The dress is pretty, but it just does not work on her – she has such a nice figure, and maybe if this had been a smidge more fitted I might feel differently, although the color is really not doing her any favors, and those sleeves are sort of wonk, with the lace top and what appears to be a fabric bottom… I am doing a fug/fab in my own comment, dangit.

On TV I LOVED this, but on TV it did not look mint green. Nor did her hair look that red. Maybe my TV’s colors are screwy. All I can say is that last night I was stunned by her beauty, and in this photo I’m quite disappointed. Alas.

Same here. It looks silvery on my tv, and I thought it looked pretty fab when she was up on stage. I like it much less when it’s minty green, and she looks so much better as a brunette.

The dress is pretty if not extraordinary, but the hair and makeup are incredibly meh. Definitely a disappointment. I still love her, though!

Dress seems to frowsy for such a gorgeous woman and the hair just is horrible. Can’t tell if it’s just the color or the style or both. Maybe she colored it for a role or something?

If you haven’t seen The Artist, you should. She is just so talented, and her co-star–that is a good looking French Man! At first I didn’t like the dress, but now that I see pictures, I do like it.

I think if she had just worn her hair down, it would have upped it by about 70 per cent.

Shame. She looks amazing at the Globes (?) in that stunning purple pleated dress.

    From cbsnews.com:
Felix Mercado: “Her seafoam green, vintage-inspired dress was underwhelming. This dress would have looked so much better on Tilda Swinton… and that isn’t a compliment!”

    Oh dear!

    • Jessica
      0

      SWINTON would never wear this!

      • GingerLover
        0

Correct, but she might wear this colour, which is not green, but mint (not even dreaded Seafoam).
Those horrible pastel coloured mints that are chalky and stale even if “fresh” (I actually believe they made about 5 billion of them in like 1950, and none since.)
Swinton would wear a Silk Duster made in this colour and look fab, B will just eat stale mints until she is as old as Miss Haversham unless she gets some style gonads – this is milquetoast! Gah!

Mais non! Bérénice gets a pass on this one from me, just cause she’s so damn delightful.

Wellll I think it fits her really well, plus it looks like she has sprinkles all over her dress. She looks like a delicious St. Patrick’s day cupcake. Any dress that reminds me of food is a winner in my mind.

I was reminded of sprinkles too, but that wasn’t enough to totally win me over.

Is she auditioning for Ariel? All she needs is a set of clam shell bra.

Why did she wear her pegnoir and nightie to the Oscars? Surely she owns actual clothes!

  26. Ann

Agree with the comments about the hair – give her a nice 40′s siren wave and she’d be drop dead gorgeous.

I’d be interested in seeing more angles of this.

In this photo, I’ll agree with the comments about the dress and hair looking meh, but while watching this on the red carpet and throughout the show, I only thought she looked gorgeous.

  28. Deborah

I thought the dress was quite lovely, but the hair needed to be different.

  29. Beth

The biggest problem here is her hair. She needs a bit more by her face.

Dress is fine, beautiful even, although she could use a better bra. But that wretched hair! It looks stiff and badly dyed and frankly, not so clean.

Nothing to do with the dress but some might be happy to know she won the Cesar (French award) for best actress in a leading role on Friday.

I don’t know what everyone’s whining about – I absolutely LOVED this dress. She looked elegant & timeless with a hint of sex appeal, and I thought the minty color was really refreshing. I probably would’ve done something more exciting with the hair, but otherwise, I thought she was one of the best dressed of the night.

  33. Loramir

I agree, I loved her dress! The color is gorgeous and the design is elegant! Her hair is for a role – she commented on it here:

I think it looked gorgeous styled as it was in the photo on that link, from the SAG awards, but I didn’t hate it last night.

I think this would be soooooooooooo much better without the sleeves. Although the colour is a tad iffy also.

    Scratchy Insulation Dress.

She is gorgeous though and I can’t wait to see the movie.

  37. Lilibet

I think she must have worn a wig in The Artist.

  38. Tessie Bee

This would have been lovely as a sleeveless number with a less severe updo and a hoik-em up bra. But then I hate see-through sleeves (why? have sleeves or don’t ! NO HALF MEASURES)

Berenice literally lights up the screen in The Artist — you cannot take your eyes off her. And that is why this was my biggest disappointment of the evening. Were there worse dresses? Absolutely. but they were not being worn by my current girl crush. Berenice, you are much, much better than this.

  40. Charlotte

I love the cut of the dress (yes, even the sleeves – some of us ladies prefer a bit of coverage) but the color is a non-starter. For me, though, it was the styling. The hair is awful, of course – whither the brunette, Berenice? – but the make-up is incredibly dull as well. I would have really liked to have seen either a strong lip color or more dramatic eyes. As it is she’s completely washed out by all that mint green.

  41. Jen

Add me to the list of people who can’t understand how she fugged this when she was so beautiful in the film that you couldn’t take your eyes off of her. Both hair color and dress color seem wrong (or maybe just don’t play well together.) Hair styling seems too severe, and dress is oddly bland.

  42. MelissaW

I like this but I would have LOVED it in a more saturated green. She’s got such lovely pale skin that the pale minty color washes out.

  43. denise

I thought she looked like staph in petri dish and I still do. the detailing and color are just not good together or on her. also, when you look at the whole dress it creates an illusion that her boobs are sagging, but then when you look at her boobs you realize they’re fine. that is bad dressmaking and her stylist should have noticed and fixed it. fire anyone so inattentive.

I think the dress is beautiful, it’s the hair I don’t like. Half of her eyebrow is missing. Someone said Mother of the bride dress and I suppose that is true. But you can always ruin a dress that way – call it a prom dress or M.O.B. dress, hooker or showgirl.

Those ‘sprinkles’ look itchy. I think the dress would have been okay without the sleeves, though.

she looks so much like haley from one tree hill to me that every time i see her i get confused as to why she is speaking with an accent. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm954842624/nm0502342
