Oscars Cute Weekend: Quvenzhané Wallis

well-played

This must have been a weird couple of months for Quvenzhané Wallis. It’s hard to say how much a nine-year old absorbs from an experience like this, if only because when you’re little, sometimes things that are mind-boggling for an adult seem normal, because you don’t have as much life experience to compare with. Young Oscar winners, like Anna Paquin, have said that they didn’t even realize exactly what was going on at the time — and in Quvenzhané’s case, when it comes to certain aspects of being in the public eye, that’s probably for the best. (For example, I were her mother, I damn well wouldn’t want to have to explain the details of The Onion’s deeply misguided joke, and the press reaction to that, to her. Because you have got to be kidding me. VERY POORLY.)

However, it’s pretty easy to grasp that people think she looks cute. Because she did. Let’s all take a moment to reflect on the fact that she doing to star in the Annie remake, and that therefore it might be awesome.

Not only is she cute but now she started a fashion trend, ’cause Dog Purses are selling like HOTCAKES!!! You knew Little Q (please don’t shoot me, I think the nickname is cute and suits her perfectly) would become a little fashionista because she liked a matching animal accessory?

Did you see that the Oscars puppy purse is wearing A TIARA?? I die. So adorable.

God, I love this girl! She’s wonderful and I only want great things for her forever because she’s such a joy! I love the dresses! My 8 y/o niece would die for the 2nd one! And I want to frame that 1st picture and put it on my bedroom wall because it’s AWESOME!

Whoever is dressing her is a GENIUS. She is so gorgeous and appropriate, and looks totally at ease.

Certain Other People who are older and presumed to Know Better could learn from this.

Photo #1, I know I’ve seen that expression of the face of Paddington Bear.

Quvenzhané Wallis is the most adorable movie kid since Abigail Breslin. I’m glad to see that her parents seem to be aware of the dangers that often befall youngsters of precocious talent and are safeguarding her childhood appropriately. Everyone at The Onion who had anything to do with that disgraceful episode should be fired. It would have been a wretched thing to say about any female, but a nine-year-old? CTFO, people! How could anyone think such hatefulness is funny?

From a fashion standpoint, I totally love what she’s been wearing, especially the puppy purses. Nine years old is a great time to be princessy and sparkly.

Re: Halle Berry as Hannigan – She would/could be awesome, but you just KNOW she’d insist on being Grace.

She’s looking great. I only wish she wore other shoes, with thicker soles.

I love this child. She is so cute I could die. I heard her on Public Radio saying that the dog purses were like a treat she got from the J.C. Penney’s by her house when all the awards stuff started. I just died. Her dresses are so age appropriate and adorable, and I hope she has a terrific career so we can see more of her.

I ended up going to Getty’s arrivals page on Oscar night, once ABC took over. I saw the first picture and thought it was just lovely.

Sometimes you forget in all the Halle Berry drama and gorgeous that she is, in fact, the mother to an almost-5-year old little girl. (Even though a lot of that drama is around her baby-daddy.) I thought you could really see that in her smile.

I wish nothing but good things for this little girl, including retention of her excellent sense of fashion :)

I wonder if that’s the same smile she had on her face when she was contemplating having her fiance beat the crap out of her child’s dad.

Not only is she the cutest moppet ever, but she was absolutely incredible in Beasts of the Southern Wild. I can’t wait to see what she does next — and if it’s Annie, I’ll even see that.

I read somewhere that this dog purse had been custom made to look like her dog, I do hope this is true. It would be so adorable.

I love her so much, and the dog purse is delightful and the fedora is righteous! I also love her blue Oscars dress – it was a good balance of ‘I’m only 9′ and ‘But I’m a princess tonight’ in a great color. More of her, please, movie industry! I can’t even comment on the horrible misogynist Seth MacFarlane/The Onion horror show last Sunday it all makes me so sad and angry. Sister Q, keep flexing those muscles and doing your thing!

Holy shit, you weren’t kidding about that tweet, I can’t find any angle where that’s remotely clever or funny. And I LIKE the Onion.

Anyway, this kid is the best. I love the blue dress too, getting to dress up like a princess for something like this would have been my DREAM at her age. She looked like she was having a blast.

So I admittedly didn’t see Beasts of the Southern Wild, but I have to say I find Quvenzhane supremely annoying. Not her fault that they’re re-making Annie, but can we please leave the classics alone! Also, can she even sing?

The whole puppy purses thing feels so contrived and the victory fist pumping when they announced her name at the Oscars bugged me too. I worry with kids like her that they get so built up by their handlers they turn into huge brats. It just reeks of child-star syndrome to me.

That all said . . . I’ll give her team props for dressing her age-appropriately. Aesthetically speaking, I particularly like the pink dress.

I can’t speak to you finding her annoying, since that is such a personal thing between people and celebrities they can’t stand, but the “fist-pumping” was actually a thing from the movie, so if you had seen it, it would have made sense to you.

I have been cuted out by this kid myself. Any director will tell you that a child’s performance is not comparable to an adult’s as far as technical ability, and I think they should have a minimum age limit to keep the Oscars from becoming more of a popularity contest than they already are. Besides which, we’ll either forget who she is in a few years or be talking about how annoyingly ubiquitous she is.

      • George
        +2

Agreed. I find the kid somewhat annoying as well. Not that that is in any way her fault – as has been rightly pointed out she is 9, and seems like a pretty normal 9yo. Children are wont to be annoying at times, and can hardly be expected to display the same self-awareness as an adult. No, my objection is to the adults who feel the need to include a child i what should be an adult sphere. And agreed, nominating a 9 year-old in the same category as Emmanuelle Riva and Naomi Watts is dumb and insulting

It’s a ‘tad’ early to start talking about her reeking of child-star syndrome, non? And the puppy purses being “contrived”? Dude. She’s 9. Take a chill pill.

    • Edith
      +11

Aubrey O’Day’s dyed dog is contrived. Q’s puppy purses are the preteen bliss that Claire’s is made of – when you have no thought at all of looking sexy or sophisticated – you just want to be cute. She’s adorable – and if you HAD seen BotSW, you’d be blown away by how talented she is. And if you’d further heard that Annie was originally going to be WILLOW SMITH, you’d be over the MOON at this news….

(As a mother of two daughters, there are many days when I find myself singing, “Some women are drippin’ with diamonds, some women are drippin’ with pearls – Look at me, lucky me, look at what I’M drippin’ with: LITTLE GIRLS!” Hee!)

I loooove her, she’s is adorable but I’m not a fan of the dress and especially the wrap/shawl. She’s 9 year old why wrap her with so much cloth. The other dresses are much lighter and princessy. Maybe she chose that one but a sparkling tutu princess dress would’ve been great, she’s 9 she can getaway with looking a princess

    • Cassandra

I agree. I think she looks mostly great, but the shawl is a little much.

Every outfit is spot-on, and she herself is so cute I teared up a little.

In addition to looking fabulous, apparently she’s quite a delightful personality – and very much nine years old, not trying to be a miniature adult:

“It’s kind of weird, because you see a bigger you,” she told AwardsLine about watching herself onscreen. “And then you look at yourself, and you think, ‘Why am I so much smaller than the real one up there?’ And then you look at yourself and go, ‘Wait, I’m the real one!’”

    Aaaaawwwww…

She looks awesome. The shawl maybe slightly much, but since you never know what the inside of an auditorium’s going to be like, it works. Also, I can’t even deal with how angry I am about all the insults she got.

I nearly fell off my chair when I saw the tweet from The Onion (I wont even go into what I think of Seth McFarlane). All I could think of was ‘ I hope that that precious little poppet NEVER hears a word of what they said”

How could anyone who is a parent say that about a 9 yo girl, regardless of who or what she was doing. I would have eviscerated anyone who said that about my daughters, at ANY age.

  25. Marg

Puppy purses and fist raises are totally normal for nine year olds. Its how that age celebrates. And the gesture was from the movie. I thought she did a great job sitting like a happy well mannered lady for what must have felt like a looooong night for a nine year old. I thought the dark color of the dress combined with the shawl has a heavy effect, but the dress alone was adorable, especially in the picture with Halle Berry. I absolutely love the peach dress she wore to the Independent Spirit awards. The color was perfect for her, young, sweet, and pretty and the design age appropriate yet properly formal.

I don’t know how anyone who has ever cared about a child could stomach the jokes made at her expense. I don’t know which was worse the attack on an innocent kid or the attempt to ruin something that should have been respected — being the youngest nominee.

I really hope that in her puppy purse is a Hershey bar, a $5 bill, a Lip Smackers lip balm and a little notebook in case she meets someone whose autograph she wants.

I think she is adorable and have loved all of her outfits this awards season. ESPECIALLY the matching dog purses. However…and this is the weirdest critique I think I’ve ever made on this site…does anyone wish the tutu on the dog purse she wore to the Oscars was a shiny dark blue, like her dress? I mean, I think the tiara is an awesome touch, I just want…. you know what? This is crazy. I am critiquing a dog purse. Because it’s not sparkly/bright enough. I think I need to go home now.

“Young Oscar winners, like Anna Paquin, have said that they didn’t even realize exactly what was going on at the time”. Anna Paquin also said in an interview at the time she was hoping for a nomination, but that story’s better so she’s revised it over the years.

I really want a puppy purse, and I am old, old, old. Maybe I can be old and eccentric.

Somewhere Suri Cruise (not the real one, the pretend Suri of Suri’s Burn Book) is weeping, because this child is adorable beyond compare.

My favorite pictures from the Oscars were from Ms. Wallis’ interactions with the hosts and the other celebs. She’s so charming and is a real sweetheart. And her puppy purses are adorable. She’s such a happy, cheery nine year old.

The only thing I didn’t like was the fedora at the she wore at the cocktail party. Just a bit too “funky”. But otherwise, a complete win.
